STRATEGIC PLANThe Higher Education Strategic Plan builds on and incorporates the College’s Strategic Ambitions Plan, communicating the College’s vision ”Inspiring you to achieve your potential”, through its Core Values: we respect all individuals, we work together, we act with integrity and we are committed to supporting our students and to working in partnership with employers.

HE ENVIRONMENTThe College has developed a separate HE environment in terms of buildings and learning environments (including virtual learning environments). A high proportion of HE is delivered in the University Centre enabling students on Education, Early Years, Business, Engineering, Forensic Science and Computing courses to interact naturally. A newly established laboratory/test rig area for engineering and construction students has been completed in the Bakewell Centre and the School of Arts, Design & Media is moving to the Vernon Centre. The HE Common Rooms combine social areas and a working space, providing useful areas for HE students. Bespoke HE Study areas adjacent to the College’s Library and within the University Centre allow HE students to work individually or in groups.

A major part of the College’s property strategy is to continue to develop the University Centre, possibly in another location on the Town Centre

Campus. The designated Centre will be for the delivery of a higher proportion of HE, with specialist HE areas requiring specific resources shared with other provision located elsewhere. This strategy is designed to ensure that students who may have progressed from FE in the College enjoy a different experience when they progress to HE.

HE EXPERIENCEOur teaching staff are highly qualified and have many years’ experience of supporting students through their courses. We are a close knit community, where you will not feel lost or just one of the crowd. All our degree courses are validated by highly respected local universities and are complemented by a wide range of BTEC Higher National Certificates and Diplomas and professional qualifications. You can begin at the level that suits you and work up to a full university level qualification in a range of subjects, all within one institution.

The aim of the University Centre is to provide students with an HE experience different to that found in a university setting. Typically, group sizes are smaller, enabling tutors to build relationships

Studying Higher Education at the University Centre Stockport College

with students and to offer more support or to direct learners to the various support systems available in the College. Courses start earlier in the year than typical university programmes and students generally receive more hours teaching per week. While this provides a very supportive environment, the University Centre is aware of the need to progressively reduce the dependence on tutors that many learners have in their first year. Therefore programmes are designed to build independent learning skills and increase progressively student autonomy over your time at the University Centre.

The teaching staff are highly qualified, very professional and here to help you to succeed. Some courses are available either full- time or part-time allowing you to build your study into a busy life.

With more than 50 years’ experience delivering higher education, the University Centre continues to offer a unique student experience with exceptional support from highly qualified professionals who are dedicated to helping you reach your full potential.

QUALITY ASSURANCE AGENCY FEEDBACKStockport College has been recognised as a model of good practice for the quality and standards of higher education and teaching it offers by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

In its report published May 2012 the QAA awarded the College top marks all round in its integrated and Quality Enhancement Review (IQER). The IQER is a rigorous examination of the standards achieved in the provision of higher education in further education colleges throughout England, and assists the QAA in encouraging continual improvement in the management of the quality of higher education.

The report awarded the College the highest rating in the core themes of academic standards and learning opportunities. Areas of good practice, the team stated that, “the clear structures and effective processes with which the College manages its higher education empower higher education staff to maintain good academic standards.”

Its report continued: “Effective management by the College of its staff development strategies supports the achievement of good academic standards and enhances learning opportunities” and “the adoption and development of the ‘Feed Forward’ approach to formative feedback enhances student learning.”

capturing the ‘learner voice’.

l Students commented positively about the timely return of work.

l One-to-one tutorials are a regular feature of the students experience, are highly valued and apply equally to full and part-time students.

l Students stated that tutor feedback to them was timely, constructive and helpful for improving their performance and grades.

l Students particularly value the advice received from course staff, which often draws upon the career insights available through extensive and close industrial links that the University Centre enjoys.

We think this speaks volumes about the experience you will get from studying here. Why not judge for yourself?

STUDENT FEEDBACKThe National Student Survey (NSS) is an annual census of students in the final year of a course leading to undergraduate credits or qualifications.

Conducted by top market research company ipsos MORi, it gives students the chance to give their opinions on what they liked about their time at their institution, as well as things they feel could have been improved. The results provide colleges and universities with an important benchmark on their comparative performance, and give them an indication of areas in which management need to fine-tune their own work.

The College’s students have delivered a robust assessment of its performance in the 2013-14 academic year, and have confirmed that the College has registered improved performance. The headline outcome of this is that overall satisfaction rates with our provision have risen by a substantial nine percentage points, and we now return a score of 81%. Our scores for assessment and feedback, academic support, and personal development are all in excess of the national average for All Higher Education Institutions; and in the case of assessment and feedback in particular, we have scored five percentage points more than the average for all Universities and Colleges in the UK. Students stated that tutor feedback to them was timely, constructive and helpful for improving their performance and grades.

All successful students are invited to the University Centre Stockport College Awards evening, where there is an opportunity to celebrate their achievements with family members, friends and tutors.

Awards Celebration

THE EVENTThis event is usually held in October at the Town Hall and is the biggest education ceremony in the Stockport events calendar. Students have told us they appreciate their hard work being recognised, particularly if their course does not have a university graduation ceremony attached to it.

Students are able to dress formally in a gown or more informally in their own clothing, whichever is their preference. Photographs can be organised with the professional company and/or taken by friends or college staff. Some students like to have a picture of their group with their tutor as a lasting souvenir of the course.

SMALLER CLASS SIZESAs we are smaller than most universities you never feel lost or just one of the crowd.

The University Centre’s groups are suitably sized, and tutors are easily available and supportive. We are able to spend just that little bit more time with you in the classroom, workshop or on placement as you gain knowledge, skills and independence.

GAIN A DEGREE FROM A PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITYStockport College’s degree programmes are awarded by one of our partner universities; Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Central Lancashire, the University of Chester and Liverpool John Moores University.

The degree programmes are complemented by a wide range of Edexcel BTEC Higher National qualifications.

EXCELLENT PROGRESSION ROUTESStockport College’s links with local industry and other organisations are excellent, so you know your course will prepare you for that new career or promotion at work.

Many of the University Centre’s graduates have gone on to achieve success in their chosen field.

ACADEMIC SUPPORTAt the University Centre Stockport College we place emphasis on academic support for students. We take account of the learning experiences that you have had before you come to us and may sometimes accredit these (through APL - the Accreditation of Prior Learning) so that you do not have to cover the same ground again.

WIDENING HORIZONSThe annual HE student conference launched in 2009, the seventh conference took place on May 22nd 2014. With over 100 delegates in attendance Widening Horizons is an opportunity for students across a range of professional backgrounds to get together and share experiences.

Students present their work in a variety of ways: some produce posters explaining research that they have completed; others lead workshops or provide more informal table-top displays; some students offer a formal, illustrated lecture-style account of their work. Typically the conference shows the relevance of learning at the University Centre Stockport College to practice in the outside world and the connections that students make with local communities, charities and businesses. It is a celebration of achievement for those graduating but also an inspiration for students following in their footsteps.

24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOANS

What are they?24+ Advanced Learning Loans are student loans similar to higher education loans, but for the further education students. The loan will cover the cost of your course fees.

People with higher level qualifications tend to earn more. Taking out the loan can enable you to invest in education and training which will improve your knowledge, skills and employment prospects.

Are you eligible? To qualify for the loan you must be: aged 24 and over at the start of your course; a resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the course and studying for the Access to HE Diploma.

Loans will not be means tested or subject to credit checks and if you meet the criteria above you will be able to apply for a loan irrespective of your current employment status or benefits you receive.

How to applyWhen you have applied for a course and been offered a place, we will send you a Learning and Funding Information Letter (Offer Letter). You will need this before you can apply for the loan.

You will be able to apply for the loan through the Student Finance England website. The loan amount will be paid directly to the college on your behalf to meet the costs of the course fees.

RepaymentYou will not have to pay anything back until you are earning over £21,000, and the loan will be written off after 30 years. Interest on the loan will be at the rate set by Student Finance England which will be lower than anything available from the high street.

If the loan is for an Access to Higher Education diploma and you subsequently go on to complete a higher education course such as a HND, foundation degree or full honours degree, you will not have to pay back your Advanced Learning Loan.

OKAY, SO WHERE CAN I APPLY FOR A LOAN?You can do this by visiting www gov.uk/studentfinance and click on apply. The site will work out exactly what you are entitled to.

By inputting various course and financial information you can access a personalised online quote showing you how much support you could receive and how much it will cost to study at each of your university choices. (You can also transfer the information from the calculator to your online application, saving time and effort.) See www.gov.uk/studentfinancecalculator

What happens to an application once submitted?Providing the deadline for submitting has been met and the correct evidence provided, the application will be assessed within 30 working days.

You will then receive a financial notification in the post explaining your entitlement for the year. This letter will be needed when you register at your chosen university. You will also receive a declaration which you must sign and return to SFE as soon as possible.

A payment schedule will be issued so you know exactly when your loans and grants will be paid into your bank account.

The first instalment of financial support will only be paid once you have enrolled at university or college and you submit a copy of your Financial Notification to the Enrolment Department. If a tuition fee loan has been requested, this will be paid directly to the university.

HOW WILL YOU BE ASSESSED?The course is continually assessed through assignment work. The modes of assessment are specific to particular subjects. They are designed to allow students to meet all the relevant assessment criteria in a manner that is stimulating, relates to the type of assessment undertaken at HE Level and where possible, addresses topical or vocational issues.

Assessment strategies include essays, practical reports, case studies, open or closed-book examinations and verbal, visual or IT-based presentations. All modules will include an element of time-constrained assessment which will contribute towards the final module grade.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?Higher Education – Degrees, Foundation Degrees or Higher National Diplomas. The college offers a number of Higher Education courses in subjects such as Health and Social Care, Education, Forensic Science, Engineering and Childhood Studies.

The Access to HE Diploma allows progression to these courses and also to a wider range of Degrees at local Universities such as the University of Manchester, University of Salford and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Most university admissions tutors will accept the Access to HE Diploma as an entry qualification for Higher Education, but there may be some degrees for which this certificate alone may not be acceptable. The suitability of the course for your ultimate career aim will be discussed at interview.

Please note that whilst your subject tutors and Personal Tutor will make every effort to support your application for a university place, progression onto a specific higher education course cannot be guaranteed. It can be a highly competitive process, and your tutors, together with the college Careers Advisers, will try to give you realistic advice as to your chances of progression.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GET ON THE COURSE?You must have GCSE English

and Maths at grade C or above to enrol on the course. All applicants for the Access course will be invited to attend a workshop where they will meet members of the Access Team.

BA (Hons) IllustrationAwarded by Manchester Metropolitan University

In a supportive and encouraging atmosphere the BA (Hons) Illustration programme aims to equip students with a broad range of practical, theory-based and business skills, which are current and appropriate to contemporary illustrative practice. The course aims to challenge what illustration can be rather than what it is.

We are a small, dedicated, enthusiastic team who between us have a wide range of recent and relevant industrial experience. Staff involvement in both, their own practice and research, directly informs the curriculum. The course embraces a wide range of working methods, including 2-D and 3-D, analogue and digital; collage, printmaking, drawing, model-making, photomontage and animation. There are also opportunities to work collaboratively throughout the course.

Prospective students should have a strong desire to make pictures (through whatever means) interpret and re-interpret text, tell stories visually and have a point of view. We encourage a playful approach and welcome applications from resourceful individuals with personality and strong interests, who are prepared to think and question things. Practical design skills are augmented by presentation skills,

industry practice knowledge, entrepreneurial and business skills, which are embedded throughout the course and enable graduates, to successfully convert the educational experience they receive on the course into design-based careers. Students have also gone on to teach at primary, secondary, further and higher education levels.

The course is regularly supported through the help of strong links with industry and visiting practitioners of both national and international acclaim. This input ensures currency and an awareness of current debates and future opportunities within the industry. The knowledge and skills gained through the three year programme of study will encourage you to identify an area of the industry that you wish you to pursue, and help you make the industry contacts that you will need to do so.

A group of students from Level 5 BA (Hons) Illustration met with Parkinson’s Equip, a new charity aimed at raising awareness of the everyday problems that a Parkinson’s sufferer deals with.

Parkinson’s Equip

The founder Ray Wegrzyn, and artist Ghislaine Howard, came to college with a book of poetry written by people suffering with Parkinson’s.

They discussed with the students about making some visual work that explored these poems. The project was very much directed by the students involved, each taking an individual role and responsibility to produce images on aspects of Parkinson’s and then make the final publication come together.

This included fund-raising (lots of cake baking), liaising with paper suppliers and printers and seeking guidance from Ray about the sensitive subject matter. The project culminated in an auction of the original artworks, poetry readings and the sale of the publication at Joshua Brookes, Manchester in March 2015.

BA (Hons) Motion DesignAwarded by Manchester Metropolitan University

The BA (Hons) Motion Design programme focuses on animation and motion graphics as a design discipline. Developing ideas is at the heart of the programme with an emphasis on client driven projects. Students explore two-dimensional and three-dimensional animation, through drawing, stop-motion, visual effects, compositing, and audio & video manipulation. The programme is supported by expert staff and resources that are kept current and are openly available.

The changing appetite for the way we consume information will continue to shape the design industry for the foreseeable future. This programme seeks to exploit this emerging skills gap by developing confident, adaptive individuals that are keen to embrace this evolution. Time based design allows students to investigate narrative and bring their work to life.

The course is designed with employability at the forefront. Our close contact with the design industry ensures the knowledge and skills the students develop are current and relevant. Professional Practice is a core element of all levels of the course.

Students are encouraged to investigate the industry through independent research, studio visits, external talks and visiting practitioners.

We set up external live collaborative briefs providing the opportunity for students to develop their confidence in liaising with clients and presenting their work and receiving valuable feedback. The course is structured to develop independent, critical, hardworking thinkers and ‘doers’ that are equipped with the confidence to continue learning after they graduate, whether they seek work in the design industry or pursue postgraduate study.

BA (Hons) Contemporary PhotographyAwarded by Manchester Metropolitan University

The BA (Hons) Contemporary Photography course provides a series of academic and practical modules which build as the students progress through the course. As well as providing an important level of professional experience in practical photographic practice, the course offers the opportunity to develop the attributes necessary to function successfully in the professional environment. Graduates understand the responsibilities, actions and behaviour required to achieve their goals and are therefore well prepared to make the required steps towards their professional career.

FIRST YEARIn Year One of the course the students are introduced to essential practical photographic skills. Course content concentrates on how to understand photographs and enhance creative photographic skills as well as find and develop a personal approach and photographic style. This is done through a series of practical workshops and projects culminating in a portfolio of photographic work. The students are also introduced to photography as a visual language and have an opportunity to discover its historical routes as well as its powerful position in a contemporary culture.

SECOND YEARIn Year Two the students have the chance to build on what has been learned and discovered in the first year by following a number of practical, technical and academic modules. The students are introduced to the critical contexts of photography as well as the professional and vocational skills necessary for employability. There is the opportunity in this year to work directly with a client on a variety of live projects.

Clients could include public sector organisations, museums and galleries. There is a clear requirement for students to engage with the professional environment in order to achieve two clear goals; firstly, establish a future direction, secondly, learn the value of collaboration through direct experience. The students are also encouraged to develop presentational skills and critique and discuss the work of their peers. This year also builds on the technical skills gained in the first year.

THIRD YEAR In Year Three students are expected to concentrate on their own photographic work, with an informed set of goals, which builds towards the post-graduate environment. Via self-directed contact with professional practitioners and organisations, students will experience the full range of skills required to make the successful transition from student to professional. This entails all the attributes; practical, verbal and written. The course completes with an exhibition at a professional gallery, which is organised, funded and promoted by the students.

HOW WILL YOU BE ASSESSED?A wide range of assessment methods are used throughout the course. Students are encouraged to assess themselves and others as part of their studies; the course values self-evaluation and the ability to reflect on learning. Students receive regular verbal and written formative feedback throughout the year and there are key assessment points when summative feedback is provided.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?Students progress into a variety of careers in photography, arts and creative industries. Graduates have found employment in teaching, curation, book production, art therapy, engagement programmes, assisting photographers, editorial & PR photography, magazine work, arts based commissions, self-employment, forensic and medical photography and commercial photography both in the UK and abroad. Foundation Degree TV ProductionAwarded by Liverpool John Moores University

The Foundation Degree Television Production course provides two years of dynamic, hands-on practice in the techniques that underlie modern television broadcasting. Our aim is simple: to develop students in the skills and experience which make them “employable” within the broadcast media industries.

LEVEL FOUR (FIRST YEAR)Great emphasis is placed on building both technical and teamwork skills during the first year of the course across an extremely wide range of on-going ‘live’ broadcast opportunities which gradually build in both scale and complexity. Students are encouraged to engage with both traditional and emerging digital technologies and see how they interface with traditional TV Studio techniques.

LEVEL FIVE (SECOND YEAR)The second year of the course is much more self-directed, developing opportunities to create professional standard material for showreel and an “experience portfolio” which aims to demonstrate a genuine ‘engagement’ with the real world of professional broadcasting.

INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTSApplicants are encouraged to bring evidence to interview which demonstrates their interest and commitment to a future within the broadcast industries. This could include a showreel or other edited moving image material; evidence of involvement in media-related projects (creative or organisational aspects); portfolios of graphic/photographic/written work; material can have been generated through personal ‘hobbies’ or within an educational context. We’re as interested in you and

what you have to say – critically – about your work as in the work itself.

We place a high emphasis on success at the interview stage and although the interview process remains informal it is still a crucial part of the recruitment process. It also provides an opportunity for the applicant to see the range and complexity of our facilities, meet current students and examine prior work.

Recent highlights include many series of live webcast television programmes, a large-scale drama shot on location with the participation of the local Emergency Services and the opportunity to work to live “client” briefs! Each year we work alongside the world-renowned Halle Orchestra to televise four of their concerts at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester before a capacity audience.

Our work has been recognised by a number of inde-pendent programme makers with whom we enjoy useful working links. A number of students have been recruited by them directly after graduation; oth-ers choose to extend their studies to Honours Degree Level (we have a one year “top-up” option available on site at Stockport College). We have found that our unique practice-led experience has proved popular with employers and universities alike.

You can check out some of our work on our YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/user/TVStockport/feed or see photos of us at work on Flickr at: www.flickr.com/photos/eskayproductions/sets or keep up with all our latest news by following us on Twitter: @EskayProduction

Much of the tuition on the course takes place in and around the College’s fully equipped television studios and post-production complex using a wide variety of industry standard equipment. There are also opportunities for outside broadcast work on ‘live’ events both within the College and at events off campus.

TV Production students from Stockport College have been working with the world-renowned Hallé Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester to record live symphony concerts.

TV Production Students Work with the Hallé Orchestra

Every year, the Hallé Orchestra performs a series of concerts aimed at school children as part of the project called “Hallé for Youth”. In 2014, in line with the First World War commemorations, the theme was “Keep the Hallé Fires Burning.”

Students from the College operated five cameras and a Directing Team ensured the images of the players were then put on the big screen behind the Hallé in The Bridgewater Hall.

Hallé Education Officer, Laura McPheely has been instrumental with helping the degree students to plan their camera angles for the upcoming Hallé for Youth schools’ concerts.

For the majority of the audience, it is their first experience watching an orchestra. The aim of these concerts is to help them discover the instruments

and the sound each of them makes. For the last few years, the TV Production course at Stockport College has collaborated with the Halle, providing live visuals for the large screen in the hall. The content is there to help the kids identify the instruments.

Andrew Percival, Foundation Degree in TV Production Programme Leader, said: “For students keen to make their way in the world of professional TV production, these concerts represent the ultimate challenge: as well as planning and directing a multi-camera live-mix, there is the added complication of having to deal with music rather than speech - and symphonic classical music at that! For many of the students, unfamiliarity with the layout and sound of a symphony orchestra is their starting point - within a month they’re directing the equivalent of the BBC Proms.”

BA (Hons) TV Production

Subject to validation by Liverpool John Moores University this one year ‘top-up’ to the Foundation Degree qualification enables progression to BA (Hons) and is delivered entirely at Stockport College. It provides an additional year of dynamic, hands-on practice in the techniques that underlie modern television broadcasting and aims to strengthen the skills and practice developed on the two-year Foundation Degree consolidating and equipping students with the skills and experience which make them ‘employable’ within the broadcast media industries.

LEVEL 6 (THIRD YEAR)The third year encourages students to assume much greater responsibility for determining the shape and scope of their own work; it also seeks to further develop the vital critical and evaluative skills which will enable successful graduates to operate effectively within the increasingly-complex media workplace. We encourage the fostering of links with both local independent production companies and with clients through modules that encourage negotiated content development and collaborative talent nurturing. There is also the opportunity to engage in a substantial TV research project and present the findings in an innovative and appropriate manner.

The third year remains an optional ‘top-up’ to Honours Degree level but we anticipate that many successful Foundation Degree graduates will want to invest an additional year in developing their skills and portfolio of experience

INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTSThe one year ‘top-up’ is an articulated progression route (APR) for the Foundation Degree in TV Production at Stockport College. Applicants with

alternative Level 5 experience are expected to bring evidence to interview which demonstrates the depth of their interest and commitment to a future within the broadcast industries. This should include a showreel or other edited moving image material; evidence of involvement in media-related projects (creative and/or organisational aspects); portfolios of graphic/photographic/written work; material can have been generated through personal ‘hobbies’ or within an educational context.

Our work has been recognised by a number of independent programme makers with whom we enjoy useful working links. A number of our graduates have been recruited by them directly on or before completion of their studies. We have found that our unique practice-led experience has proved highly popular with employers seeking multi-skilled employees and crew members.Much of the tuition on the course takes place in and around the College’s fully equipped television studios and post-production complex using a wide variety of industry standard equipment. There are also opportunities for outside broadcast work on ‘live’ events both within the College and at events off campus.

“My main gain from the Foundation Degree in early years course is a greater level of self-belief which gave me the courage to pursue advancement in my career by applying for a position which I would previously have assumed was beyond me.”

Sharon Skade Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice graduate in 2014

“The insight gained into perspectives, roles and responsibilities of other professionals involved in Family Services gained from the Foundation Degree course proved invaluable in my application and successfully gaining the position.

Within my new role I have drawn on the knowledge gained in all units within the course, it has provided me with a solid framework for my practice and continued professional development.

My advice for those thinking about starting the Degree would be to bite the bullet and enrol. For

current students, stick at it, work as a team, read what the tutors provide you and speak to them about any concerns or worries, they really do care and are more than willing to help. I am not going to lie and say it is easy, at times I really questioned why I was doing it, as did others on my course. But with the fantastic support and belief from the tutors at the University Centre I stuck at it and I am now reaping the rewards, professionally, academically and personally.”

Emma BlakeOn the Job

Working in forensics was probably in Emma Blake’s DNA – but Stockport College helped her to focus on the microscopic details of getting there.

She first attended the College straight from school to study for a BTEC in Health Studies.

Emma progressed to Staffordshire University, where she gained a degree in Forensic Science and Psychology, before securing a job in industry as a DNA chemist.

“My work involved synthesising DNA samples for research; I knew that it was going to be lab or field-based, but once I actually started doing it, I found it to be very repetitive and boring,” said Emma.

“I left the company when I became pregnant with my son, Beau, with the intention of being a ‘stay-at-home’ mum, but decided that I really needed a change of direction.”

While she had been at university, Emma had considered doing a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and going into teaching, but felt she lacked the confidence at the time.

Now, with the benefit of a few years’ working behind her, she decided to pursue her ambition, and enrolled at Stockport College again, this time to do a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

“It was one morning a week in College – three hours a week – then working from home and getting in teaching hours,” she said.

Stockport College was always my first choice – and it’s been vital for my career...”

“I had to get in 150 hours’ experience over the two-year course, which I did at Stockport College on the forensics course. It was terrifying at first, covering for a teacher on sick leave, but looking back it was probably the best thing for me!”

When Emma qualified she had already landed a place at Warrington Collegiate the previous August, to teach forensic science.

“It was difficult studying, particularly during the second year of my diploma, which was when I had my second child, Skye, who’s now 17 months old. When she was born, I was also doing voluntary work at Stockport College, and took literally just two weeks off to have her!

“I’m now teaching full-time at Warrington Collegiate and I love it – it’s brilliant! It’s everything I thought it was going to be; there’s never a dull day, and I’m working with a great team of people”.

“I can’t thank Joanne Smithies, my tutor at Stockport, enough; she’s always been very understanding, and I still have regular contact with her. I’ve just got a Grade 1 observation result at work, which I’m delighted about and again, I’m really thankful to Joanna for that – she totally prepared me for going out into the world of work...”

Stephen FieldOn the Job

Stephen received the reward at the PQ awards ceremony at Café du Paris in London on Tuesday evening. He had been shortlisted with four other teachers who represent further and higher education institutions from across the UK.

IMG_0108Stephen, from Nantwich, started his teaching career at Stockport College six years ago and ‘hasn’t looked back’ as he has helped countless students achieve their ambition of a career in accountancy.

Following a successful 22 year retail and commercial banking career Stephen pursued his interest in training and development when he worked as an AAT assessor with a training provider. He continued to update his skills and qualifications by embarking on the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) which he has studied ‘on and off’ for ten years.

His appointment at Stockport College has proved to be beneficial to both the students and the tutor himself.

A Stockport College tutor has been recognised as the best teacher at a national awards ceremony for the accountancy sector. Stephen Field, who teaches Association of Accountancy Technician (AAT) programmes at the Wellington Road campus, won ‘Public Sector Lecturer of the Year’ for the quality of his teaching by accountancy sector publication PQ magazine.

Stephen said: “Stockport College helped me with my own personal development by sponsoring me to complete the last two units of the ACCA qualifications. I am now a chartered accountant which has helped me deliver lessons to the highest standard. Knowing your stuff and being able to answer a wide range of questions contributes to the motivation and success of the students.”

The award of public sector lecturer of the year from PQ magazine reflects both the investment Stephen and his students have made in their learning.

Stephen said: “It’s a great feeling helping other people achieve their goals. I am in touch with many former Stockport College students and it gives me great pleasure to follow their careers and progression to chartered status.’

HOW WILL YOU BE ASSESSED?6 of the units will be internally assessed by continuous assessment. There is a research element in the second year. You will also create a Placement Portfolio of evidenced practice that will be sent to ABC for external assessment.

Assessment will include formal, informal and continuous feedback from tutors and peers. You will be expected to produce a portfolio to evidence the learning outcomes.

Please note: this is a Level 4 course that requires students to work to an equivalent standard of that undertaken on a 1st year undergraduate programme.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?Candidates who successfully complete this course are considered to be qualified counsellors. They may also progress onto postgraduate and post-qualifying courses in counselling studies that are designed to enhance the practice, skills and knowledge of a practicing counsellor. Many candidates progress towards national accreditation status with lead bodies such as The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Each applicant needs to display a commitment to personal development and be prepared

to commit a significant amount of extra time outside the course hours. Each student will need to have a satisfactory CRB (DBS) check completed at the commencement of the course (facilitated by Stockport College), and complete student membership with the BACP, at their own cost. All students must undertake a minimum of 100 hours supervised practice during the time of the course. The student is responsible for finding a placement themselves, although they will be supported and guided in this process.

Placement work must not be started until the course tutors are satisfied that the all conditions have been met. Once a placement starts students need to undertake independent supervision, in addition to the 20 hours personal therapy which is a requirement of the course. The team at the College will provide information, support and guidance on this.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GET ON THE COURSE?lSuccessful completion of the

Certificate in Counselling Skills Level 3.

lEvidence of ability to study at Level 4.

lA commitment to an ethical framework of one of the governing bodies for counsellors e.g. BACP, UKCP.

lTwo satisfactory references, one from a previous counselling tutor.

lA successful interview.

HOW LONG IS THE COURSE?This is a part time course running over 2 academic years.

WHEN WILL YOU BE ATTENDING?Please note that throughout the course attendance is monitored and an 80% minimum attendance figure is required to complete the awarding bodies’ criteria. NB: although students are only in college for one day per week, the reality is that this training requires you to commit around two and a half days per week to fulfil all the elements, e.g. placement practice hours, attendance at supervision, personal therapy, study and assignment work etc.

ABC Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic CounsellingAwarded by ABC Awards

This course represents the final stage in counsellor training and focuses on the personal and professional development of the individual to work as a fully functioning practitioner. The course is aimed at those who want to work as counsellors primarily, but we recognise that some people want to experience the process and gain an extra string to their bow in their chosen field e.g. teaching, nursing, medicine, etc.

This course is on the QCF national framework and is mapped to the National Occupational Standards. It is an integrative course drawing on a number of approaches to counselling, not just a person-centred one. These skills will be more effectively developed through a process which encourages candidates to assume an active responsibility for their own learning. It also enables them to establish principles and good practice from a shared analysis, with fellow candidates and staff, of experiences on the course and related experiences.

By the end of the course, candidates will have completed all the learning outcomes for the following units:

lProfessional Organisational Issues in CounsellinglCounselling in a Diverse SocietylCounselling TheorylAdvanced Counselling SkillslSelf-awareness for CounsellorslResearch Methodologies in CounsellinglCounselling Placement (minimum 100 hours

“The teaching is great, and the College has always given me the exact qualifications for me to get where I want to go”

Charlie CoxOn the job

For bright sparks like Charlie Cox, Stockport College has been there for him at every stage of his further and higher education.

He originally trained as an electrician after securing a place on the College’s three-year Electrical Installation NVQ Level 3 course.

“I’d had a year at another college straight from school, doing ‘A’ levels – that’s what everyone did, but it wasn’t for me, so I decided to get a trade, because a trade is for life,” said Charlie.

“I applied to Stockport for the Electrical Installation course – it was part-time in conjunction with an apprenticeship at a local firm, which the College helped me to find.”

After qualifying, Charlie worked for over a year on site projects, until the day his bosses – in his words – “hauled me into the office and told me they thought I had the potential to go beyond solely site work.”

The company asked Charlie to do an HNC (Higher National Certificate) Building Services Engineering, to learn more about the design and management sides of the business.

“This was a two-year course, at Stockport College, on day release; I was now working on basic designs/layouts and starting to get into managing people on site. It was completely different, a bit of a jump to start with but still enjoyed it.”

Charlie completed the HNC and then went to work for another company, in more of a quantity surveying role, but didn’t really enjoy the work, so moved to another firm and spent the next four years designing electrical systems on large projects, including schools, prisons and universities.

With that experience behind him, he successfully applied for his present role as an electrical design engineer with Mott MacDonald, a worldwide company which specialises in building services, management, engineering and development consultancy.

Mott MacDonald supported Charlie to continue his education – not that he needed any encouragement! – and he enrolled for an FdSc (Foundation Degree) Building Services Engineering at Stockport College.

The Foundation Degree is a one year course, one day/week, leading to a qualification from the College in conjunction with Liverpool John Moores University.

“It’s hard when you’re working a full day, and then all you want to do is get home, watch TV and get to bed, knowing you’re going to be up at 6.30 the next morning. But it’s going to get me to where I want to be, so that’s the motivation!

“Stockport College is in a great location for me – I live in Stockport – the tuition has always been great, and there’s always full support from teachers who are always willing to be pestered beyond the classroom...”

The course uses forensic science to teach science and laboratory based skills in a vocational setting and aims to develop your communication skills, and practical and analytical skills.

The course is made up of modules but essentially there are three main themes that run through the course - forensic biology, forensic chemistry and forensic practice; forensic case work is embedded into these themes. In Year 1 you will be introduced to basic practical skills involved in laboratory work including safety issues, data manipulation, biological and chemical techniques and forensic practice. This emphasises the diversity of the subject matter and how all three areas (biology, chemistry and forensic practice) link together. In Year 2 you will continue to build on forensic chemistry and biology, observing how it is applied to forensic case work. The written work will be less structured and involve more independent study and you will move to look at forensic cases rather that the examination of single items. One module is taught by the School of Forensic and Investigative Sciences at the University of Central Lancashire Preston Campus, so further strengthening links with the School.

“When I got my ‘A’ level results, I was pretty downhearted – but the course at Stockport College has been a brilliant alternative route to where I want to go.”

Ben HallOn the job

Choosing to study biology, chemistry, physics and drama after school, Ben Hall might have seemed destined for a future role in ‘Waking The Dead’!As it was, things didn’t quite turn out the way he had anticipated...

“My GCSE exam results were amazing – then somehow, everything went downhill at ‘A’ level,” said Ben.

“To cut a long story short, my results just weren’t good enough to get me into the university I’d hoped for, and I found myself in a bit of a panic...”

Stockport College provided the solution for Ben. His combination of ‘A’ and ‘AS’ levels were sufficient to secure him a place on the FdSc (Foundation Degree) Forensic Science course and re-focus on his academic career.

“I found the course at Stockport completely by chance and it needed lower entry requirements, which was ideal for me.”

The course uses Forensic Science to teach science and laboratory-based skills in a vocational setting and aims to develop students’ communication, practical and analytical skills.

“Because I already had a fairly wide experience of the sciences, I particularly enjoyed the logical thinking aspect of things that was encouraged on the course – how to analyse data, fingerprinting and so on,” said Ben.

“Plus, the forensics course is a very open science degree, which can lead on to a wide range of options in the broader science field – it really helped me to keep an open mind in more ways than one.”After successfully completing the Foundation Degree and the associated bridging modules – run over a three-week period during the summer – students are eligible to progress to the third year of the BSc (Hons) Forensic Science degree. The Foundation degree can also lead to direct employment in the science sector.

Continued Ben: “I don’t have a career in mind at the moment; my aim is to complete a basic science degree, and because the forensics course is a very ‘open’ science degree it can lead on to a wide range of options in the broader science field later on, so I can keep my choices open.

“I’d recommend a foundation degree to anyone. The way to think of it is just a different way of getting to where you want to be.”

l AVCE/GNVQ in an appropriate subject area; giving 90/120 UCAS points (not NVQ – see below)

l Students from overseas will have to provide visa entitlement and original paper qualifications, which will be subject to NARIC equivalence assessment to 90/120 UCAS points. (NARIC: the National Agency responsible for providing information, advice and expert opinion on vocational, academic and professional skills and qualifications from over 180 countries worldwide).

All students are required to complete an unseen, no calculator allowed entry test which should last approximately 15 minutes and they will be interviewed regarding their suitability for their chosen programme and their reasons for choosing engineering as a career.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?Applications can be made through UCAS or, for an application form, please contact Course Enquiries on 0300 300 0090 or 0161 296 5544 or email: [email protected]

You are strongly advised to discuss your application first with the staff in HE Engineering at the college using the contact details below for specific information and to avoid confusion regarding any aspect of the course or your application. Applications can be processed before the UCAS application or in parallel with the application if necessary. If you are applying for financial support then you are advised to make the UCAS application as soon as possible regardless of any application to Stockport College.

You are also advised to discuss any financial matters relating to student loans etc. with the staff in the Student advice Centre at the College.

Note that UCAS often issue a progress status for your applications which can be ignored as they do this on a ‘timed’ basis but we operate on an ‘as interviewed’ basis and the two systems rarely match; all offers etc. are subject to interview and pre-course testing and will be communicated by us directly to the applicant.
