UNDERSTANDING NCEA QUALIFICATIONS
Credits will be gained by external examinations and/or internal assessments in either achievement or unit standards.
Results will show credits and grades for separate skills and knowledge. The National Certificate in Educational Achievement is awarded at three levels:
Level 1 Requires 80 credits, including ten (10 each in literacy and numeracy). English and Mathematics courses allow this requirement to be met in most cases. These credits are also available through other subjects. Each student needs to check where they expect their numeracy and literacy credits to come from.
Level 2 Requires 80 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 2 or above on the qualifications framework. Students cannot be awarded NCEA Level 2 without fulfilling the Level 1 requirements for numeracy and literacy (10 credits in each).
Level 3 Requires 80 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 3 or above on the qualifications framework (the other 20 must be at Level 2 or above). Students cannot be awarded NCEA Level 3 without fulfilling the Level 1 requirements for numeracy and literacy (10 credits in each).
Recognising High Achievement Certificates can be ‘endorsed’ to reflect high achievement in a significant number of standards. Course endorsements will show that students have performed well in an individual course. Certificate Endorsement If a student gains 50 credits at Excellence, their NCEA will be endorsed with Excellence. Likewise, if a student gains 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence), their NCEA will be endorsed with Merit. The Record of Achievement shows endorsement awards. Credits earned can count towards an endorsement over more than one year and more than one level. However, they must be gained at the level of the certificate or above. For example, Level 2 credits will count towards endorsement of a Level 1 NCEA, but Level 1 credits will not count towards endorsement of a Level 2 NCEA. Only one certificate endorsement can be awarded for each student in a calendar year. Course Endorsement Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course. Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve: 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and at least 3 of these credits are from externally assessed standards and at least 3 credits are from internally assessed standards. Note, the external requirement does not apply to Physical Education – this subject is fully internal. A course endorsement is not a qualification. Course endorsements are only available in courses that have achievement standards. A course endorsement can be gained independently of a qualification. For example, a student may achieve a Merit endorsement for their Level 2 Mathematics course regardless of whether they achieve NCEA Level 2.
UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE University Entrance (UE) will be the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand university. To be awarded UE you will need:
NCEA Level 3 plus
Three subjects – at Level 3 or above, made up of 14 credits each, in three approved subjects plus
Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, 5 credits in reading AND 5 credits in writing from specific standards plus
Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above from specific achievement standards, or three specific numeracy unit standards.
Page 4
Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance it will appear on your Record of Achievement. This does not guarantee entry to the degree or subjects of your choice – in many cases, a higher level of achievement will be required. Many degrees at polytechnics, institutes of technology and private training enterprises also require this entry standard. Approved subjects for university

New Zealand Scholarship Scholarship provides recognition and monetary reward to top students in their last year of schooling. Scholarship exams enable candidates to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able candidates in each subject. Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations. See http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/awards/scholarship/ for more information.

Step 3: Highlight or mark all possible subject choices as you read about them. Make sure you satisfy any pre-requisites.
Step 4: Discuss these pre-selections with your parents/guardians.
Step 5: Seek advice if necessary from:
Careers co-ordinator Deans
Academic Dean Subject teachers
Heads of Department
Step 6: After careful thought and discussion, complete your subject selection sheet.
ABILITY INTERESTS PATHWAYS DIRECTION
SUBJECT CHOICE
How good are you at this subject?
Add to your ability your interests – what do you enjoy doing?
You may not know what work you would like to do – don’t worry.
Go through the possible subjects listed on your handout.
How easily do you understand it?
Reasons for enjoyment might be because of the work, the teacher, or because you seem good at it.
If you do know, or if you have ideas about what you might do, you can find out what subjects might be needed.
Highlight or mark alongside each possibility, and investigate those subjects thoroughly.
Your test marks and your work will help you estimate your ability.
+ You gain more satisfaction and probably reach a higher standard in your work if you are interested in it.
+ Staff are most willing to help you think this through.
=
Be careful not to under-rate your ability.
Tick your choices on the 8 line timetable sheet and return it to the office.
Page 6

SUBJECT: Year 11 Food Technology (TTEF101) Gluten Free Cookie PURPOSE: In doing this course, the students take on the role of a Technologist. They follow the Technology Process to research a particular context (coeliac disease) and develop solutions to meet the brief and specifications. This course focuses on product design and development. PATHWAY: Creative Industries, Social and Community Services, Manufacturing and Technology. RECOMMENDED ENTRY: Completion of a Year 10 Technology option (preferably Food Technology). This is a demanding course and the assessment is done in the form of a written portfolio. There is a significant amount of work involved and students must be committed to completing classwork and also independent homework tasks, as and when they are required. COURSE OUTLINE: Coeliac disease is one of the most common chronic health disorders in western countries. People with untreated coeliac disease suffer intestinal damage when they eat products containing wheat, rye, or barley. Coeliac disease presents a broad range of symptoms, from mild weakness and bone pain, to chronic diarrhoea, abdominal bloating, and progressive weight loss. In most cases, treatment with a gluten-free diet leads to a full recovery from coeliac disease. It is therefore imperative that the disease is quickly and properly diagnosed so it can be treated as soon as possible. Because coeliac disease is becoming more common today, shops and suppliers need to sell products to meet this need. It is now becoming the trend to sell gluten free options and some shops are entirely stocked with these products. Through this course the students will be researching these options and design their own gluten free cookie. This will involve them taste-testing, doing practical experiments, and researching cookie types and target markets. The students will determine their own target market and work to create a cookie that will appeal to them. COURSE FEES AND RELATED COSTS: $100 for ingredients and the purchase of a suitable food safe container to take home practical work. ASSESSMENT INFORMATION:
