Donating blooD is safe, easy, and saves lives. Your five- to 10-minute donation to the Blood Donor Center supports Murray Hospital patients, so you will be helping people in your own community.

“Only 5 percent of people who can give blood actually do, which means 95 percent of the population who could donate choose not to,” says Linda Cavitt, Director of Laboratory Services at Murray Hospital. “We want to encourage people to donate because there’s no synthetic replacement for blood, and it truly can save a life.”

Knowing your numbers—from cholesterol to blood pressure—can give you concrete health information to help you stay on track. For example, keeping your blood pressure numbers at or below 120 systolic and 80 diastolic can reduce your risk of stroke and heart disease.

Murray-Calloway County Hospital is pleased to offer free screenings through the Health Express mobile unit, an extension of the Center for Health & Wellness. The Health Express visits various locations throughout the community to ensure residents of Western Kentucky and Northwest Tennessee can stay up to date on preventive screenings without having to pay, travel far, or make appointments.

Different screenings are rotated every month and include:• blood pressure• blood sugar• cholesterol

a tEam EFFortFor local businesses and organizations, the Health

Express also offers additional screenings, including:• body composition• body mass index• prostate-specific antigen

Help promote wellness in your workplace by including screenings as part of your next health fair.

murray hospital’s Diagnostic capabilities incluDe:• 64- and 16-slice computed tomography (ct) scanners—Both

machines are equipped with dose modulators that adjust radiation based on thickness of the body to obtain quality images and reduce radiation exposure by up to 80 percent.

• Digital mammography—Murray Hospital’s dedicated reporting system for mammography allows tests to be performed every 10 minutes.

• intensity modulated radiation Therapy (imrt)—IMRT delivers intense and accurate pinpoint radiation in three dimensions to effectively treat cancerous lesions while sparing surrounding tissue.

• positron emission tomography/ct (pet/ct)—PET/CT is a mobile imaging technology used for all types of cancer diagnoses and treatment planning.

• siemens wide bore espree magnetic resonance imaging (mri)—With the bore ceiling extended from about 2 inches on a standard MRI to more than 15 inches, this upgraded technology limits claustrophobia and has a table capacity to accept patients weighing up to 550 pounds.

• ultrasound—Our ultrasound machines utilize the new volume navigation system that, when used in conjunction with CT or MRI, can confirm the presence and correct location of suspect cancerous lesions.“The high level of state-of-the-art technology available in our

department is comparable to that found in much larger facilities,” says John Rebuck, Director of Radiology at Murray Hospital. “Our Internet-based picture archiving and communication software system gives physicians access to patient tests anywhere in the world.”

The success of our Minimally Invasive Surgery Center starts with the expertise of our surgeons who focus on securing the best possible outcomes for patients while

staying abreast of innovative technologies and techniques. Nurses and other staff members play an equally important role during and after surgery to ensure patients have safe, positive experiences.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques can be used to remove organs such as the gallbladder, colon, and appendix, as well as to repair abdominal wall hernias.

“Almost all general surgery procedures have been replaced by minimally invasive techniques,” says David Koelsch, MD, FACS, Chief of Surgery at Murray Hospital. “An operation that was performed through a large abdominal incision can be performed through one or a few small incisions about the size of a pencil eraser.”

Although these are more technically challenging operations for the surgeon, the advantages for the patient are great. The most obvious benefit is a faster recovery time. A patient who undergoes a traditional colon resection typically spends one week in the hospital and six weeks recovering at home, but a patient who

A Surgical Solution for Obesity

For certain people, nonsurgical weight loss measures aren’t enough to overcome obesity. western Kentucky and northwest tennessee residents who are unable to shed excess weight through conventional means can turn to murray-Calloway County hospital, where Brian swain, md, FaCs, board-certified general surgeon, offers two types of bariatric surgery.

“individuals with a body mass index [Bmi] of 40 or higher, or those with a Bmi of 30 or higher who possess at least one comorbid condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, qualify for bariatric surgery,” says dr. swain. “patients receive intensive preoperative education with a registered dietitian for six months prior to surgery, and they also meet with me twice before the operation to discuss the pros and cons of bariatric surgery.”

dr. swain performs two types of bariatric surgery: lap-Band® adjustable gastric Banding system surgery and gastric sleeve surgery. Both procedures restrict the amount of food patients can eat, although they achieve that result in different ways. during lap-Band surgery, a band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach, creating a smaller space for food to accumulate, thereby making patients feel fuller faster. after surgery, the band can be adjusted as the patient reaches his or her optimal weight loss.

gastric sleeve surgery is a laparoscopic procedure in which a surgeon removes 70 to 80 percent of a person’s stomach, with the remainder taking the shape of a banana-like sleeve. according to dr. swain, patients experience an approximate 5 to 10 percent difference in total loss of excess body weight at the three-year mark after surgery versus lap-Band. gastric sleeve surgery also doesn’t require the implantation of a foreign device inside the patient’s body. the results with gastric sleeve are very similar to those achieved with gastric bypass.

“all bariatric operations are tools for weight loss; they don’t ensure weight loss by themselves,” dr. swain says. “we let all our patients know the importance of the lifestyle choices they make following surgery. we follow up with patients several times postoperatively to ensure they are compliant with diet and exercise guidelines, which is essential to securing a good long-term outcome.”

otherwise miss, improve patient outcomes, and achieve a lower recurrence rate.

Surgeons at Murray Hospital also utilize the SILS™ technique—a method of performing surgery through a single incision hidden in the patient’s belly button—to remove the gallbladder, colon, or uterus. Murray Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the region to offer these operations.

a nEw option For rotator CuFF rEpair

Minimally invasive surgery at Murray Hospital isn’t confined to the abdomen. For athletes or weekend warriors who have torn their rotator cuffs—a common cause of shoulder pain—arthroscopic rotator cuff repair can help them return to the activities they love with only small arthroscopic incision scars to show for it.

Tearing of the rotator cuff—the muscles and tendons clustered atop the upper arm

bone—frequently occurs among people who make repetitive overhead motions, whether at work or play. If the injury can’t be healed with conservative treatment such as physical therapy, surgery is an option.

“The traditional method of rotator cuff repair required a 4-inch incision, but we make small arthroscopic incisions—less than the width of a finger—that allow us to insert surgical instruments and a scope to visualize the surgical site,” says Derek Morgan, MD, orthopedic surgeon at Murray Hospital. “After cleaning the area where the tendon tore off, we place anchors with sutures into the bone and reattach the tendon. Patients are able to return home the same day.”

If you think you might be a candidate for minimally invasive surgery, don’t hesitate to ask your physician about this option. It could help you get back to living your life faster and with less postoperative pain.

“We believe in afamily-centered approach to childbirth, as well

as pampering moms during their stay in our Maternity Center,” says Dana Bazzell, RN, BSN, Director of Perinatal Services at Murray Hospital. “The Maternity Center combines the expertise of a larger hospital with our unique style of personalized care.”

Before babies arrive, moms can take advantage of breastfeeding consultations with our lactation nurse, childbirth preparation classes, and a 50 percent discount for membership to the Center for Health & Wellness.

at your sErviCEMaking mom and her family comfortable

during their hospital stay is a priority for the Maternity Center. Every mom is encouraged to communicate with her obstetrician and take a tour of the Maternity Center before delivery, so the staff can accommodate as many of her and her family’s wishes as possible. Specialty birthing beds in all five labor and delivery rooms

help facilitate a safe birth, and a nurse assigned to each mom is available throughout the delivery to ensure that mom’s and baby’s needs are met.

The serenely decorated private patient rooms offer the perfect postpartum space to bond with your child. After delivery, new moms welcome their little miracles with the push of a button that plays the First Tune—a classical guitar lullaby that announces the arrival of each new baby. If desired, the rooming-in option allows parents to keep their child with them and have periodic checkups rather than send the baby to the nursery.

Postnatal services include lactation counseling, a follow-up call by a Murray Hospital staff member, and a 15 percent discount for massage therapy at the Center for Health & Wellness.

BaBy 101In keeping with our family-centered approach

to preparing for the new addition, the Maternity Center offers the following classes:

• grandparents—The one-session grandparents class serves as a babysitting refresher course.

• siblings—The siblings class helps older brothers and sisters express their feelings about the changes in their family unit, teaches them the proper way to hold a baby, and introduces them to the Maternity Center.

• prepared childbirth—The three-session childbirth class walks expecting parents through labor and delivery and the first four months of their baby’s emotional, intellectual, and physical development.“Expecting couples should have an

opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance during the process of becoming parents,” says Elizabeth Khadem, RN, BSN, IBCLC, Lactation Consultant and Childbirth Educator at Murray Hospital. “We help empower them as mothers and fathers.”

“i thinK as a result of our fast-paced societal culture, we’ve lost sight of what a true emergency is,” says Jeanne Mathis, RN, Director of the ED at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. “People are used to getting what they want immediately, so if a physician’s office can’t see a patient for several hours, sometimes individuals decide to see if the ED is quicker.”

However, as Mathis explains, the ED does not deliver care on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Patients are treated in the order of significance and/or urgency of their illness or condition,” says Mathis. “Wait time is never discriminated by who has health insurance and who doesn’t.”
