ON THE HOSPITAL staff for 26 years, she credits both her patients and fellow team members for enriching her life.

“I feel privileged to help patients in what is often the most difficult times of their lives,” Page says. “I hope I make a positive difference in their lives—just like they do for me. But I am only as good as the people I work with. From imaging technicians to dietary services, pharmacists to maintenance crew, quality care takes every one of us giving our all.” Page received recognition last October as the Employee of the Month.

Recognizing SUSAN PAGE, RN, UNIT

COORDINATOR OF THE MURRAY-

CALLOWAY COUNTY HOSPITAL

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, IS THE

2014 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR.

Welcome to the Spring/Summer issue of Healthy You! It’s that time of year to plan vacations and outdoor adventures. We want to remind

you that Murray-Calloway County Hospital is here to serve you, as we welcome four physicians to the area. Dr. Brady Harris is a general surgeon; Dr. Stephanie Hutchison and Dr. Karla Turley provide OB/GYN services; and Dr. Frederick Lorenz is an otolaryngologist.

Murray Hospital is always striving to provide top-quality care so you don’t have to drive far from home for treatment. We are so proud of being one of only two, 4-star rated hospitals in the area and we are working hard every day to get better.

We’re delighted to take you inside our new hybrid operating room in this issue. The hybrid OR combines any type of surgical procedure with high-resolution X-ray imaging. As you will read, Dr. James Craig Dowdy says it allows surgeons to be more precise by seeing the images more clearly.

Also in this issue, you can read about the Golden Anniversary of Spring Creek Health Care on page 7. We’re thrilled to support the well-being of elderly adults in our community, and look forward to another 50 years of service.

Thank you for reading, and we hope you’ll take time to get outdoors and enjoy the spring and summer weather.

Sincerely,Jerry Penner III, MHA, FACHECEO, MURRAY-CALLOWAY COUNTY HOSPITAL

MURRAY HOSPITAL IS dedicated to providing top quality care to the patients of our region. In keeping with our first priority, the hospital recently upgraded its heart catheterization and vascular surgery capability all wrapped in one of the largest Hybrid OR’s in Western Kentucky. In turn, vascular and heart catheterization technology came up-to-date, just as important, more room for physicians to work.

“Our Hybrid OR is very spacious. This allows us to be able to fully utilize the sophisticated radiology equipment to its fullest potential,” says Jill Asher, RN, CNOR, RNFA, Director of Perioperative Services at Murray Hospital. “Having advanced imaging technology is beneficial. It means less radiation emission for our patients and for our staff. It’s much safer.”

PRECISION PERFORMANCE“Our new hybrid operating room is used for all types of peripheral

arterial procedures, as well as other procedures that need high-resolution imaging,” says Dr. James Craig Dowdy, vascular surgeon at Murray Hospital. “This could include anything from the placement of

pacemakers to the repair of aneurysms in the abdomen to a variety of other minimally invasive surgeries.”

The key difference between procedures that are performed in a hybrid OR and those in a standard OR is the ability to conduct high-resolution imaging during the actual surgery. Murray Hospital’s hybrid OR utilizes the C-arm imaging system, an X-ray that provides images in real time. This allows surgeons to immediately view the desired area in great detail.

“Higher-quality images mean shorter procedures,” says Dr. Nathaniel Dittoe, cardiologist. “Our patients are able to return to their daily lives and activities more quickly than with a traditional procedure.”

Because procedures can be performed with greater precision, patients experience shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times. If more procedures are needed, they are typically performed on an outpatient basis.

“Being able to convert from a diagnostic to an interventional procedure is advantageous for our patients,” Asher says. “It can prevent a second trip to the Operating Room. Our surgeons can inject dye into the cardiac or vascular system, assess the problem, and fix it right then. All of this can be safely done in the Hybrid OR.”

The hybrid OR is an entirely different concept than the standard OR. It combines any type of surgical procedure with high-resolution X-ray imaging. The entire suite was designed from the

ground up with the aim of surgery and imaging working seamlessly together, allowing the surgeon to be more precise and efficient.”

QUALITY CARE IN THE COMMUNITY“Our surgeons are very talented and we are happy to have this

amazing equipment to facilitate their procedures,” Asher says. “We are thankful to be able to offer this state-of-the-art, big city technology right here in our small town.”

When patients are able to stay close to home for their medical care, the stress of travel and being away from their families is eliminated so they can focus on healing.

“The hybrid OR setup really facilitates a team approach, which in turn enables us to provide better and more thorough care,” Dr. Dowdy says. “In this difficult economic time for small, community hospitals, we want patients to know that the Murray Hospital staff, administration, and physicians are doing everything in our power to bring the highest-quality facilities and care to our hometown patients.”

The Silent RiskDo you suffer from heart disease, or have one or more heart disease or heart attack risk factors? You could be at risk for a silent heart attack—one without any of the obvious, commonly known or discussed symptoms, such as sharp chest pain or shortness of breath. A silent heart attack’s impact on your body is no different than a typical heart attack. Blood flow to the heart is temporarily blocked, and damage to the heart muscle ensues. The difference, of course, is that you may not realize a silent heart attack has occurred.

Often, the condition will mimic indigestion, nausea, or strained muscles. This strained feeling can occur anywhere from the upper back and arms to the jaw. Excessive fatigue is also a common indicator.

While warning signs may not be readily apparent, you know your body better than anyone else. If you notice that something feels strange, particularly if it falls into the category of any of these symptoms, seek emergency care immediately.

Dr. Turley is a 2003 graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where she was also recently a gratis faculty member in the school’s Trover Off-Campus Teaching Center. She holds bachelor of science degrees in biology and chemistry from Western Kentucky University.

“I love working in obstetrics, as that is usually a happy time, but just the overall idea of taking care of a woman throughout her life is fantastic,” Dr. Turley says. “My ultimate goal for my patients is ‘a happy and healthy you’. There may be different ways to get there, but we’ll get there together.”

Along with prenatal care and traditional delivery, she provides services such as gynecologic cancer screenings, hysterectomies, and Cesarean sections, as well as vaginal births after cesareans.

“I’m excited to be in Murray,” Dr. Turley says. “Everyone has been very welcoming, and I’m looking forward to getting to know and taking care of the women and families in the area.”

ONE OF THE newest faces in Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s operating rooms has seen his professional journey come full circle.

Dr. Brady Harris, a general surgeon, returned to his hometown of Murray in 2014 and began offering procedures at Murray Hospital last October. Dr. Harris developed his interest in medicine locally as a student at both Calloway County High School and Murray State University. He received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2009, and then remained at the university to complete a general surgery residency.

“I know of no other profession where one can diagnose, cure, and palliate the way a surgeon can,” Dr. Harris says. “The trust that patients put in me to care for them is an awesome responsibility that amazes me each day, and I don’t take this trust lightly. I see myself as a broad-based surgeon whose capabilities range from removing minor skin lesions to performing complex open and laparoscopic procedures.”

WHERE THE HEART ISReturning home was an easy decision for Dr. Harris and his wife,

Whitney, who is also from Murray. The couple has two children.

“Our families are here, and Murray is a wonderful place to raise children,” Dr. Harris says. “Plus, the location near the lakes is great because we enjoy spending time outdoors.”

When Dr. Harris isn’t caring for patients, you might spot him as he's biking, running, or swimming around Murray in training for an endurance competition.

SPRING CREEK HEALTH CARE opened its doors in 1964. It was then known as West View Nursing Home—a 32-bed facility designed to cater to the needs of aging adults. At the same time, Murray-Calloway County Hospital opened a long-term care unit.

Over the years, these separate programs flourished, and in 1991, they merged, creating what the community now knows as Spring Creek Health Care.

“Caring for people involves much more than giving someone medicine—it’s about engaging their minds, giving them a community to be part of, and honoring the lives they live,” says Sandra Dick, BSW, LHNA, Vice President of Long Term Care Services at Murray Hospital. “Our team supports the medical, mental and emotional needs of our patients through community enrichment, interactive programming, and advanced healthcare services.”

ONE NAME, TWO DISTINCT PURPOSESThough the original purpose of Spring Creek

Health Care was to support the well-being of elderly adults, that mission has grown to include meeting the needs of adults who require specialized short-term support, as well.

“We provide hands-on care and a permanent home for those who need continuous skilled nursing support,” Dick says. “But over the years, we’ve extended our program. Now, we work with patients’ physicians to help bridge the gap between hospital care and going home.”

Short-term skilled nursing care is sometimes appropriate for individuals recovering from surgery, taking intravenous antibiotics, or participating in daily occupational or physical therapy—services that are available on-site at Spring Creek Health Care.
