A Bear-Hug Testimonial STAMPS of APPROVAL

Each year, over 500 children and families attend screenings because of fundraising events like Grin and

Bear It Run and community donations. Whether families and community runners decided to walk or

run the one mile family fun run, jog the 5K or tested their endurance with our 10K route –

participation made a huge impact on the lives of Central Oregon children and families.

On March 7th, Healthy Beginnings hosted its 13th Annual Grin & Bear It Run and

Family Fun Run at the Les Schwab Amphitheater. Over 300 runners showed up for

both a 5k & 10k run/walk. Families enjoyed a ‘fun run’ as well. Individual

competitive runners came out in droves. We also had corporate teams organized

by companies including Mosaic Medical and Bluefish who got into a friendly

competition spirit. There were several community teams that came together to share their

enthusiasm for healthy lifestyles. The weather cooperated with a welcomed dry but cool day, which the runners really appreciated.

Healthy Beginnings raised over $30,000 to go directly towards our mission of screening children throughout Central Oregon. A

HUGE thank you to our sponsors of this year’s Grin and Bear It Run:

Just ‘Bearing’ it all the way to the finish line…... Grin and Bear it Run … fun for the whole family. A WIN for Healthy Beginnings!

Healthy Beginnings 4 b4 5 program has been going strong this year, screening over 194 children in the convenience

of their preschool. Healthy Beginnings’ team of experts coordinates a visit with the preschool owners and, with

permission of the parents, screen children 0-5 years old in the areas of vision, hearing, behavior and development.

Healthy Beginnings objective of visiting the preschools is to find and identify potential concerns in these areas of

health and development as well as introduce our 12-point screenings to parents of our communities. If you are a child

care provider, a preschool or your child attends one...be sure to contact Healthy Beginnings to schedule your 4 b4 5

healthy and develop screening for your children by calling (541) 383-6357 today.

We provided a Preschool Screening in Bend in response to a request from the head preschool teacher. She felt that there were

several children who needed attention, but whose parents had not yet brought them to a community screening clinic, one of the

“12 Point Kid Inspection” we provide multiple times throughout the year and the region.

Vicki had demonstrated some extremely disruptive and destructive behavior in class. We administered an ASQ and an

ASQSE and also a vision screening. The assessments indicated that Vickie truly had no developmental concerns – but had a

significant vision concern. She was referred to an optometrist for a complete vision exam and diagnosis. We know from

experience and research that once she receives vision care her behavior will improve. Her classmates and teachers can now

relate to her in a different light and her outlook is great thanks to early detection of her vision concern.
