PUBLISHER’SLETTER COVERSTORYWritten By Ffjorren Zolfaghar

Congratulations Reno! Welcome Tesla! Tesla’s move to our community brings a much needed positive outlook for a brighter financial future for small business owners and those seeking a rewarding career. Where we live and how we earn a living does affect our emotional and physical wellbeing. When

the economy crashed in the Reno area, many small businesses were negatively impacted. Some went out of business, while others internalized the drag of a sluggish economy (which made matters worse). I guess the old adage applies, what goes down must go up, and vice versa. Thankfully, we are moving in a positive direction, and for those businesses that hung in during the tough times: great times are ahead!

October has always been a pivotal month for me. Fall starts to really show her colors. The nights are cooler and the days are sunny and crisp, just like a sweet firm apple. Mother Nature in her autumn bloom tickles our nose with fresh breezes of fallen leaves. It’s a great time for long walks and hikes in the mountains, before we bundle up for winter and less time is spent out of doors.

Please enjoy our October issue. It is our hope you are able to visit an apple orchard, pumpkin patch or a nearby vineyard. Our bodies are designed to move and we are blessed to live in such a beautiful area. Get out there and explore. Just last month, Christina climbed Mt. Whitney and Ffjorren ran in the Napa Ragnar race. Congratulations to you both!

Best in Health and Happiness,

Dawn Gowery

October boasts a time of pumpkins, fall harvest, costumes and scary décor…along with pumpkin spiced lattes, Oktoberfest brews and much, much more. Healthy Beginnings like to think of this month as spirit-filled! That is, a time when we look at our beliefs, our faith and our heart’s calling. No matter what you believe (or choose not to believe), it’s a matter of finding truth amidst the chaotic world in which we reside.

Our cover simplifies the theme this month, although its roots find its way deep within Christianity. The apple: a forbidden fruit. Although it nourished the physical being, its robust flavor, sweet taste and crisp flesh seasoned our souls with sin.

My spirited thoughts on the infamous apple…

• Apple Orchards. Fall was my favorite season during my childhood in Minnesota, which meant apple picking, hay riding and hot cider drinking! The best part: being out in nature and enjoying time with my family.

The apple, according to Christina, Design and Layout…

• “The word “apple” was one of the first words I learned in my native Danish language: æble. It continues to be a basic word that I like to have in my vocabulary with each language I attempt to learn. Manzana, mela, pomme, elma...they all sound like the round, red fruit.”

And, a little apple wisdom from Dawn, Publisher…

• “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

We hope you have a lovely month…filled with whatever it is you do to lift your spirit!

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

There’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

With the seasons changing and our sun exposure decreasing, it’s a great time to remember an old Indian tradition that has been used by yogis for over 10,000 years. It fills us with light and keeps our moods strong. It is called Antar Tratakum, or “Tratak” for short. It involves candle gazing, stimulating our sixth chakra, or brow chakra.

Chakras are energy areas in the body, identified by yogis millennia ago. In our modern translation of these energy areas, the sixth chakra would correspond to the pineal gland in the middle of the head. The pineal gland, the so-called “third eye,” is sensitive to light and it regulates all of our hormones by releasing melatonin at night (which turns down our hormones to let us sleep). It also gives us serotonin, the feel-good brain chemical, when exposed to light.

Beeswax candles

Beeswax candles have a similar light spectrum to sunlight, making them ideal for Tratak. Most commercial candles are made from paraffin, a petroleum by-product, whose light spectrum is red shifted and not to gaze at. The yogis use a ghee, clarified butter, and make wicks out of cotton balls. They pour

the ghee in a small cup around the wick. The smell of the ghee is enchanting, and this meditation experience is more authentic, but the beeswax candle is more practical.

Sitting for Tratak involves several steps and is particularly helpful for the beginning meditator who should find this visual focusing point helpful. Any time is a good time for Tratak, and early morning is a very good time--although lore says when done at night for 40 days, any problem can be resolved. It is good to do your morning cleansing and wear some loose clothing. The candle should be placed one outstretched hand-breadth level with your eyes. Smiling is good, allowing you to image the light and inspiration to fill your heart. Gazing at the candle with little or no blinking for five minutes or so, until you tear, and then closing the eyes and meditating on the afterimage of the flame for another five minutes is a good way to practice. Look at something green, like a plant or grass, afterwards to fill in the hole in your vision. When the eyes are open, serotonin is stimulated; when the eyes are closed, melatonin is secreted, creating calm. Imagining inspirational images and thoughts, saying prayers or mantras can also enhance the experience.

Many Benefits

Tratak makes you very one-pointed, focused and enhances creativity. Frequently, you experience the Aha! moment when clarity and insight is achieved. It helps erase negative thoughts, which you can visualize disappearing and dissolving into the candle flame. Tratak is also thought to make you more fearless. People with difficulty looking others in the eyes feel strengthened by the practice.

By stimulating the pineal gland with light we also activate a lesser-known pathway in the brain, the Habenular commissure, which connects the left and right hemispheres of our brains. This promotes a more balanced personality, and some would say genius.

Our grateful thanks go to Harish Johari from India who taught us this meditation, and also married Inge and me 40 years ago.

Fact or Fiction?LEaky Gut SyndRomE

Written By Robert a. eslinger, d.o., h.M.d.

For a long time, the conventional medical establishment maintained that leaky gut syndrome is a myth, or a “trendy” diagnosis. New testing techniques prove the true fiction is the belief it does not exist!

The gut lining is composed of a one-cell, thick protective barrier. The cells in this layer must decide on a moment by moment basis whether a molecule trying to gain entrance is a “friend or foe.” This task is largely performed by cells from the immune system. The problems arise when the “tight junctions” between these cells become damaged (by drugs, toxins, parasites, viruses, pathological bacteria or even food nutrients if the person is sensitive) and abnormal components “leak” into the blood. The immune response to these invaders can appear in the form of things such as digestive “issues,” allergies, asthma, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis or coeliac disease, acne, eczema and candida (yeast) infection, just to name a few.

One of the biggest offending drugs seems to be antibiotics. All microbes, when they reach a certain critical mass, can secrete toxic substances to protect themselves from other microbes. That is how our bowels normal population of helpful organisms protect us from the harmful ones. The problem begins when the “good guys” are wiped out by an antibiotic and the “bad guys” get a foothold. Once this happens, it can persist for years unless steps are taken to reverse or prevent it. The resulting overgrowth of the pathological organisms is what does the damage.

Current testing can measure intestinal permeability, identify the abnormal organisms, and even measure the degree of the

immune system response to them. This can give indication as to how long the offending situation has been a problem, and it can also tell if the immune system is starting to wear down due to being constantly under attack.

The approach to healing this condition is called the 4R program. Remove the bad. Replace the good. Reinoculate the beneficial organisms. Repair the lining of the gut.

Fortunately, there are natural, non-toxic therapies to accomplish this goal. They must be performed by a physician who knows what they are doing, as to not make the situation worse.

I have seen patients heal from serious “auto-immune” diseases by “cleaning up and repairing the gut.”

We’re told time and time again the importance of exercising the brain. The brain thinks and grows by interacting with the world. Most age-related losses, such as memory and motor skills, are a result from inactivity and a lack of mental exercise and stimulation. In psychology, especially Jungian psychology, the word consciousness has a different meaning from what it has in the field of medicine. To a medical doctor, to say that someone is conscious is to say that they are awake. They are capable of thought and some form of communication.

In Jungian psychology, consciousness refers to your awareness of the deeper attitudes and motivations that underlie your thoughts and behaviors. To be conscious is to have insight into your unconscious, to understand why you do or feel the things you do. Consciousness can also refer to an awareness of what is important in life. As illusions about ourselves and reality are pulled away, a larger understanding of life’s complexity and our role in it begins to develop.

Here are some examples to help you better understand the meaning and value of consciousness:

A young woman realizes she gets a headache whenever she suppresses her true feelings or tries to deny something that is important to her. She is becoming conscious of how her body and her mind interact with each other. The dynamic nature of the psyche is becoming real to her. Through this deepened awareness, she will be able to work therapeutically with

her headaches and allow her body to serve as an ally of her personal growth.

An adolescent boy discovers that life isn’t so bad when he obeys his parents rather than fights with them. Working with a therapist, he recognizes that his rebelliousness caused unnecessary conflict between himself and his parents and other authority figures. He is helped to see how being oppositional flowed compulsively from his egocentric attitudes. This awareness, and his newfound willingness to accept instruction, will not only decrease the amount of conflict in his life, it will help him become a more faithful servant of his own soul as an adult.

A woman discovers a pattern in her poor choices of men. She has unconsciously been selecting men that are just like her father. She reflects on this and comes to the conclusion—a very important step in her own growth--that she is still trying to win the love and approval she never got from her dad. Armed with this insight, she may in time be able to choose a mate in a more deliberate and self-aware way.

An old man in the last weeks of his life experiences a very healing development of his own consciousness. Reflecting on

Psychological consciousness

a disappointing relationship with his estranged son, he comes to recognize that forgiveness and love are more important than being “right.” The realization allows him to initiate some very healing discussions with his son. The end of his life can now pass with a sense of peace as lingering resentments and regrets fall away.

There are many reasons why it is important to seek a greater level of consciousness in your life. First, consciousness helps you to outgrow your problems. Most of our struggles are actually issues of perspective and attitude, rather than logic and logistics. Paradoxically, the assumption that problems are best solved via the mind rather than the heart and intuition often interferes with their resolution. Consciousness offers the opportunity of new psychological and spiritual growth by removing illusions and helping you see the bigger picture regarding yourself and the world. When this happens, the answer to your “insoluble” problem often becomes clear.

Second, growth of consciousness can help you help others. Issues we have wrestled with and learned from allow us to offer guidance to individuals dealing with similar issues. As Bill Withers sings in his song Lean on Me, “I just might have a problem that you’ll understand.” Our own trials and transformations provide us with insight that may be of service to others.

Third, greater consciousness enables us to choose more freely because we see distinctions and differences we formerly missed. For example, the rebellious teenager rebels compulsively. You say white and he says black. A more conscious teenager, on the other hand, is able to make decisions without the compulsive need to be oppositional. He is able to agree or disagree with things based upon his own values and self-reflection.

Perhaps the most important reason to become more conscious of your inner attitudes and attachments is that what you are unconscious of directs your behavior without your knowledge. For example, if you are unconscious of your fear of commitment you may continually date the wrong people or unconsciously sabotage relationships with the right people. When you become conscious of this fear you are able to explore, examine and do something about it. Alternatively, unconsciousness of your deeper attitudes and desires also leads to your projecting them upon others. Projecting means that your inner psychological drama or unconscious attitudes are placed on the outer world much like the images of a movie are projected onto a screen in a theatre. In other words, your perception of outer reality is affected by your inner reality. So, for example, if you are not conscious of your selfish tendencies, you will tend to see them in other people instead. You may become abnormally irritated with them when this issue is also a stumbling block for you. Projection of your negative attributes distorts your perceptions of other people and their intentions often leading to unnecessary conflict, breakdowns in communication, and misguided decisions.

Concussions involve compressive, tensile and shear forces to the brain due to head trauma. Fancy words that may be confusing, but we’ve all probably had one. Ever have a car accident? Or fall and hit your head? Maybe you hit your head on a beam or even knocked heads with someone else? Most people have hit their heads at some point, felt a little “dingy” and then dismissed it. If that’s you, keep reading.

Head injuries can vary in severity, from skull fractures (which can result in bleeds within the brain that can also result in death) to concussion, in which an individual may be disoriented, have issues with memory and balance but not have a bleed in the brain or a skull fracture.

ConCussion

Most who suffer a concussion “recover,” in terms of their symptoms.

Patients with repeated concussions can develop what is termed “post-concussion syndrome.” Post-concussion syndrome is when symptoms of concussion persist, and these symptoms can include brain fog, dizziness, light sensitivity, memory loss and headaches, to name a few. Some individuals develop post-concussion syndrome even after one concussion, and it has been found that those with pre-injury depression, anxiety and/or migraines, have an increased chance of developing post-concussion syndrome.

The new diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) has gained significant attention. In essence, a neuropathologist did brain dissections on sports athletes who had several head injuries, and it was found that these athletes had similar findings under a microscope when looking at the brain cells, similar to someone with Alzheimer’s.

Though CTE is a relatively new entity, and as a result of the recently publicized accounts of former NFL football players suffering with severe depression and other post-concussion syndrome symptoms, it has brought great attention to the issue of long term effects of concussion in everyone.

Because of these findings, and the NFL’s campaign to bring awareness to concussion, screening tools on the sidelines of high impact sports are now more readily used by coaches and athletic trainers. However, for most of us, it is our opinion that all who have probably suffered an acute concussion (see symptoms above) be seen by a licensed health care professional (LHP), due to the fact that some head injuries that seem like concussion may in fact have components of skull fractures or brain bleeds, and a LHP is required to make that diagnosis and perform necessary imaging if indicated. Those who have had concussions weeks, months or years before, and experienced the above symptoms without resolution with any standard medical interventions, should also be checked and treated.

Having said that, there is no universally accepted treatment for post-concussion syndrome in the medical model. Hyperbaric oxygen has been used as well as antioxidants, but both of these have produced limited to minimal success. Medical management includes symptomatic management for vertigo, dizziness, migraines and headaches. This means lifetime medication.

In the functional neurology paradigm, post-concussion syndrome is thought to be due to mitochondrial injury or pre-injury problems that then become worse with the head injury.

Functional neurologic treatments center on reprogramming the cerebellum and the frontal lobes, where many of the post-concussion syndrome symptoms are located. Dr. Ted Carrick, D.C., D.A.C.N.B., developer of functional neurology treatment methodologies, pioneered these brain-based rehab treatments. They center on correcting postural responses and eye movements, both neurologic parameters controlled by the cerebellum and frontal lobes. These clinically therapeutic modalities prove to be consistently successful in improving or resolving and controlling post-concussion syndromes and should become the new treatment paradigm for concussion syndromes of all categories. Currently this is the concussion sufferers best bet for partial or full recovery.

As humans, we are made up of mind, body, emotions and Spirit. It only makes sense that in attempting to heal physically or emotionally, we use all four. In the study of shamans, whether in Australia, South America, Australia, Africa or our own Native America, we learn that Spirit has an integral part in any healing practice. How we (both healer and patient) look at Spirit in relation to ourselves seems to be vital to healing success. All native traditions, no matter on which continent, see Spirit as a partner, a consciousness, an infinite intelligence. These traditions see us as an extension or part of that consciousness, not separate from it.

Science is now understanding we are not just a collection of body parts that do different things. We are an integrated whole, with cells talking to each other and working together in a complicated system of cooperation. It took decades for us to understand that attitudes of mind had a great deal to do with our physical health. Then, we began to understand emotions have a huge role to play in our health. Dr. Candace Pert’s book Molecules of Emotion was one of the first glimpses many of us had into the huge impact emotion has on our bodies, and therefore our health. Now, we are finally understanding active Spirit, working in a manner that is being described by physics, is not to be seen as separate from our ability to heal. The list of currently available books written by scientists and doctors on this subject is too long to include in this short article. Now that we have moved into an era where we can observe some of the smallest particles in the Universe, we’re learning that they are behaving very differently from what we had believed. The research is showing that everything is connected, beyond time and space…explanations of either science or Spirit are often describing the same thing. Research also shows our thoughts, expectations and beliefs play a huge role in how we heal.

We have free will and the ability to believe what we wish, and sometimes those programmed beliefs are the problem. Shamans from all continents saw the connectedness of everything and understood we are not separate from Spirit, but simply an extension of Source Energy, Spirit, God (or whatever you want to call it). They had not been exposed to or programmed by the controlling ideas of sin or guilt; they saw everything as part of the natural world, and developed their ideas about life accordingly. As a result, they were able to achieve amazing feats of healing. In every shamanic culture, even today, there are stories of instantaneous healing. Max Freedom Long, who spent many years in the Hawaiian Islands attempting to learn the secrets of the Kahunas, wrote a book in 1948 entitled The Secret Science Behind Miracles. In this book, he explains the Hawaiian understanding of psychology and Spirit is very connected, all one system. Mind, body, emotions and Spirit; there can be no separation as they all work together.

The experience of the Hawaiians regarding the influence of Western ideas is typical. Explorers assuming they are superior in every way invade a native culture and immediately impose their ideas on the inhabitants, often outlawing the native traditions. So over the years, the knowledge of those traditions, which was passed down from elders to the next generation, was lost. In Hawaii, the authorities who took over the rule of the Hawaiian Islands in the 1820s discouraged Lomilomi, a practice of native healing. Missionaries at that time perceived Hawaiian spiritual/healing practices as the work of the devil, and legislation in 1893 outlawed all those practices, as well as use of the Hawaiian language and even hula dancing. Healing elders and Kahunas (keepers of the secrets) went into hiding and became known as Aunties, Uncles and Papas to keep their true identities secret. As a result, much of this knowledge was lost over the years. However, one brave woman known as Auntie Margaret Machado began to share the practice of Lomilomi in 1973.

Lomilomi is a combination of prayer, breath and energy work, combined with a variety of long massage strokes, forming a unique, spiritually-based form of massage. Max Freedom Long, together with a group of bystanders, actually observed this woman instantly heal a man’s broken leg. He had stepped out of a vehicle into the sand and fallen. His friends heard the bones snap and wouldn’t let him try to stand up. Their destination was a party, and someone went inside to get Auntie Machado. She knelt beside the man, focused intently then touched the place where the broken bone was creating a “tent” of skin. The bone went back into place, the man stood up and the amazed partygoers went on with their evening, never to forget that experience. The first chapter of Long’s book says, “This book deals with the discovery of an ancient and secret system of workable magic, which, if we can learn to use it as did the native magicians of Polynesia and North Africa, bids fair to change the world.”

SuccessWhat is success to you? Whenever I’ve been asked that question, I often respond by saying, “Success is being able to do whatever I want, whenever I want.” That worked for me for many years, but now that I am older, I have come to know that success is measured on so many layers. Such a simple answer just doesn’t ring true for me anymore. Let me share a personal experience, and I think you will understand what I mean.

I was recently asked to champion a huge project that would culminate with me facilitating a prestigious retreat with several of the most innovative Physicians throughout the state of California. I was tasked with guiding them through many of the multiple changes happening within the healthcare industry. Success first looked like being invited to participate. That felt good. Then, they told me what they were going to pay me--and that felt really good. I succeeded in reaching one of the goals that had been on my vision board for quite some time. When it was time to do the prep work, I heard myself say, “I have plenty of time, let me bask in this place, in the satisfaction of reaching my goal.” Ah success felt good, for about two weeks.

I had a firm talk with myself about allowing resistance to show up as procrastination. I decided to implement one of the principles I honor; the principle being “Persistence is the antidote for Resistance.” I got busy and set up meetings and conference calls and made appointments to meet with all the doctors I would be interviewing to gather data I would need to facilitate the retreat. Piece a cake--I’ve done it a hundred times. However, resistance showed up in a new way. ”They” didn’t want to meet with me. They questioned my authority to facilitate their gathering. I learned this would be the first time a non-physician would facilitate their retreat. After that, I had a new goal. Success now looked like winning them over to accept me.

One by one, I eventually won them over. I literally had to pray before each call that I would have the right words to say at the right time to gain their confidence, and then I just trusted. After a few weeks had passed, I was on a conference call with many of the physicians, giving them a synopsis of the work I had done to date. As I was talking, my boss sent me a text. “They really love you!” Once again, I experience Success.

As the Retreat grew near, my old nemesis (resistance) showed up. It was my ability to self-sabotage my success by not presenting my best work to my employer. I had convinced myself the documents I was presenting were only a working draft, therefore, they didn’t need to be proofread. Spirit was whispering to me all along, “Have your assistant read this first.” “Remember to an executive, there is no such thing as a draft!” But, I went into an executive meeting with my un-proofed documents. As I made my verbal points, I could see the CEO red-lining my document, as if she were a third grade teacher grading an English exam. At the end of the meeting, she turned the document over and slid it back across the table to me. I was too embarrassed to look at it in front of her. When I did look at it, she had written, “You must have printed out an earlier version of this document by error. I am sure you didn’t realize that you brought this copy of your draft to the meeting. Glad no one else saw this.”

In that moment I realized all the feelings of success I had experienced were now evaporated. Now, all I felt was embarrassment, disappointment and aggravation at myself for not listening to Spirit when I was guided to do the right thing.

Now success could only look like overcoming these emotions and doing my very best from that point forward. I forgave myself and moved forward. I made the commitment to be as persistent as humanly possible with each new deliverable. I knew that I was fully capable of delivering, but I also knew I would have to “stretch for success.” I learned to push past fear, resistance, ego and even fatigue. I approached every deliverable with an “I can do this” attitude. When I began this project, I had no idea the demands that would be placed upon me. I just knew if I took them one at a time, and handled them to my fullest potential, then all would be fine.

The retreat was an awesome event. The feedback regarding my presentation and facilitation skills were very good. However, as I drove home, I realized those platitudes didn’t mean as much to me as my own satisfaction in being willing to stretch beyond my comfort zone--to stretch for success. Success this time manifested as contentment. Upon that realization, I heard Spirit whisper “well done!” Now, my answer would be, “Success is feeling content knowing that you have done your very best.”

Napoleon Hill is the author of Think and Grow Rich, a well-known book published in 1937. This is probably one of the best sellers of all time. During the last 77 years, over 60 million copies have been sold. Hill talks about the Law of Attraction in that book and explains that your thoughts create your reality; he tells you exactly what to do, exactly what steps to take, in order to achieve what you want. That book is the ultimate guide to the principles of success and has spawned hundreds of books that elaborate on those principles.

This Golden Rules book consists of a collection of magazine articles written by Hill between 1919 and 1923 for Success Magazine, of which he eventually became an editor. The nucleus of those articles is what this book is made of, with each chapter coming from a different article. He emphasizes auto-suggestion, which we would call Affirmations. He explains that, “The first step you must take in every accomplishment is the creation, in the mind, of an exact outline or picture of that which you intend to build in reality.” Today, we would call that Visualization. Hill also explains how important our environment is. He explains that our daily “associates” constitute the most important and influential part of our environment for

either progress or stagnation. He emphasizes the benefits of selecting people who are in sympathy with our aims and ideals, and whose mental attitude inspires us with enthusiasm, determination and ambition.

Napoleon Hill was born in a one room cabin in the Appalachians. His mother died when he was a child, but when his stepmother became aware of his superior intelligence and drive to succeed she fostered these qualities as much as possible. In later years, he was to state that he owed everything to “that dear woman.” Hill’s drive to become successful led him to the study of rags-to-riches tycoons, as he wanted to understand how they succeeded so fabulously when many people gave up and just accepted what life doled out. His main mentor was Andrew Carnegie, who set him on a mission to find out what qualities and characteristics were common among highly successful people. Drawing on the thoughts and experiences of these wealthy and influential people, most of whom had succeeded against great adversity, he shows the reader how they achieved their status. These principles were the key to success then, as they are today, in any endeavor, if they are studied and put into action.

This is an excellent self-help book that is useful for any situation. These processes and practices will supply you with the personal power and feelings of confidence, which are so vital in order to make the necessary decisions in your life. You can easily find a process here that applies to anything that is happening in your life right now. The author is not averse to telling personal stories, which emphasize qualities that some of us might be less anxious to share; he tells the story, never drawing back from self-criticism, even laughing at himself, when it is warranted and will make a point.

Many authors are not really appreciated until they’ve been dead for many years. Napoleon Hill enjoyed fame for what he had discovered when he was alive. He received congratulatory letters from presidents as well as from some of the most well-known captains of industry. He set up the Napoleon Hill Foundation as a non-profit educational institution whose mission is to perpetuate his philosophy of leadership, self-motivation and individual achievement. His books, CDs, videotapes and other motivational products are made available as a service of the Foundation to help others build a library of personal achievement materials.

If you have not read anything by Napoleon Hill, you are missing some important information that can help you succeed at any endeavor. You can purchase these materials from local bookstores or online, as well as from the Napoleon Hill Foundation at naphill.org.

Asafoetida has many colorful and sometimes contradictory nicknames. For example, it is known alternately as “the food of the gods” and “Devil’s dung.” It is also called “giant fennel,” “jowani badian” “stinking gum” and “asant.” Asafoetida is a dried gum exuded from the tap root of several species of Ferula, a perennial herb native to Iran and Afghanistan. Today, it is mainly cultivated in India.

Asafoetida is cultivated by notching the living root-stalk of the plant at soil level, and extracting the gum. The gum has a very strong, unpleasant, somewhat fetid and fishy smell. In the west, it is mostly commonly found in Worcestershire sauce. It is also used sparingly in Indian cuisine to flavor pickles, fish and vegetable dishes. The spice is used as a digestive aid and flavor enhancer. It is commonly found in Indian lentil curries such as dal. It is especially popular in Southern Indian and Maharashtrian cuisine, which is mainly vegetarian. It is used especially by the merchant caste of the Hindus and by adherents of Jainism and Vaishnavism, particularly in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra, where they do not eat onions or garlic because they are thought to cause too much excitability. The unique flavor of asafoetida is used to harmonize the sweet, sour, salty and spicy components in a dish.

In its pure form, the odor of asafoetida is so strong that if it is not stored in an airtight container, it will contaminate the flavor of other spices stored nearby. The odor and flavor of asafoetida become much milder and more pleasant upon heating in oil or ghee, acquiring a taste and aroma reminiscent of sautéed onion and garlic.

Asafoetida is a powerful digestive aid, reducing flatulence and indigestion. In Thailand and India, it is smeared on the abdomen in an alcohol or water tincture known as “mahahing.” Asafoetida was used in 1918 to fight the Spanish influenza pandemic. In 2009, researchers reported the roots of Asafoetida produce natural antiviral drug compounds that demonstrated potency against the H1N1 virus. It is also said to be helpful in cases of asthma and bronchitis. A folk tradition remedy for children’s colds: it is mixed into a pungent-smelling paste and hung in a bag around the afflicted child’s neck.

The resin-like gum comes from the dried sap extracted from the stem and roots and is used as a spice. The resin is greyish-white when fresh but dries to a dark amber color. The asafoetida resin is difficult to grate and is traditionally crushed between stones or with a hammer. Today, the most commonly available form is compounded asafoetida, a fine powder containing 30 percent asafoetida resin, along with rice flour and gum arabic.

TTourmaline has long been revered by many ancient cultures. Egyptian legend speaks of how Tourmaline made its journey from the center of the Earth and passed over a rainbow, taking with it all of the colors as its own. Ancient magicians relied upon Black Tourmaline, known as “Schorl,” to protect them from earth demons as they cast their spells. Today, this stone is still revered as a premier talisman of protection, a psychic shield deflecting and dispelling negative energies, entities or destructive forces. It guards against radiation and environmental pollutants, and is highly useful in purifying and neutralizing one’s own negative thoughts and internal conflicts, and turning them into positive, usable energy.

Black Tourmaline is also a powerful grounding stone, electrical in nature, providing a connection between Earth and the human spirit. Its supportive energy aligns the energy centers of the body and channels healing light throughout the system. It promotes a sense of power and self-confidence, allowing for a clearer, more objective view of the world. It is empowering to those who must live or work in challenging environments, or when facing difficult circumstances.

Tourmaline belongs to a complex family of aluminum borosilicates mixed with iron, magnesium, or other various metals that, depending on the proportions of its components may form as red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue or violet. Its prismatic, vertically striated crystals may be long and slender, or thick and columnar, and are uniquely triangular in

Black Tourmaline

cross-section. The name Tourmaline comes from an ancient Sinhalese word turmali, meaning “a mixed color precious stone,” or turamali, meaning “something small from the earth.” The most common species of Tourmaline is Schorl, which accounts for ninety-five percent of all Tourmaline in nature. It is black, or sometimes a blue so deep it appears to be black. The term Schorl was in use before the 1400s, named for a town in Saxony, Germany, where Black Tourmaline was found in nearby tin mines.

Needles of Black Tourmaline, or Schorl, can also be found embedded in clear Quartz, called Tourmalinated or Tourmalated Quartz. The combination of clear white and radiant black are believed to create a perfect polarity of energies, a manifestation of light and dark forces united together for a common goal. It is regarded as a symbol of great fortune.

One of Tourmaline’s most distinguishing properties is its ability to become electrically charged simply by heating or rubbing it. When charged, one end becomes positive and the other negative, allowing it to attract, or repel, particles of dust or bits of paper. This property of pyroelectricity (from heat) or piezoelectricity (from pressure or rubbing) was well-known to the Dutch traders of the 1700s who used Tourmaline to pull ash from their Meerschaum pipes, calling the stone Aschentrekker, or “ash puller.”

Black Tourmaline is an excellent grounding crystal for meditation and healing. It is said to be soothing for panic attacks, especially those caused by dark or confined spaces. It also helps control fears of doctors or dentists. In the workplace, Black Tourmaline is helpful for boosting concentration. Holding the stone for a few moments can refresh the mind when it is feeling over taxed. It provides an excellent shield against environmental pollutants, electromagnetic smog, and radiation associated with cell phones, computers, and other electronic equipment.

Black Tourmaline is a stone of purification, cleansing the emotional body of negative thoughts, anxieties, anger or feelings of unworthiness. It helps in overcoming substance abuse, and releases any suicidal thoughts or self-harming tendencies. It may be beneficial in treating obsessive or compulsive behaviors, and in relinquishing chronic worry. (It is important to note that crystal therapies are not intended as a substitute for other forms of health care, but may be used to compliment or enhance treatment).

Black Tourmaline increases physical vitality, replacing tension and stress with the ability to view the world objectively with clear, rational thought and neutrality. It inspires a positive attitude, no matter the circumstances, and stimulates a practical creativity. Black Tourmaline is devoted to grounding spiritual energies. It furthers the ability to remain radiant in the darkest of circumstances, and to maintain a spiritual consciousness, and helps one to understand the love of the universe.

INGREDIENTWATCH

A glow stick is a self-contained, short-term light-source. It consists of a translucent plastic tube containing isolated substances that, when combined, make light through chemiluminescence, so it does not require an external energy source. The light cannot be turned off, and can be used only once.

Basically it works like this: A plastic casing covers the inner fluid (which is hydrogen peroxide), while a glass capsule covers the outer substance, a phenol oxalate and fluorescent dye solution. After the glass capsule is broken and the solutions mix, the glow stick glows.

By adjusting the concentrations of the two chemicals, manufacturers can produce glow sticks that either glow brightly for a short amount of time or more dimly for an extended length of time. At maximum concentration (typically only found in laboratory settings), mixing the chemicals results in a furious reaction, producing large amounts of light for only a few seconds.

Heating a glow stick also causes the reaction to proceed faster and the glow stick to glow more brightly for a brief period. Cooling a glow stick slows the reaction a small amount and causes it to last longer, but the light is dimmer. This can be demonstrated by refrigerating or freezing an active glow stick; when it warms up again, it will resume glowing. The dyes used in glow sticks usually exhibit fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet radiation--even a spent glow stick may therefore shine under a black light.

Glow sticks are often used for recreation, but may also be relied upon for light during military, police, fire or other emergency operations. They do have some advantages. They are waterproof, do not use batteries, generate negligible heat, and are inexpensive. They can tolerate high pressures, such as those found underwater. They are used as light sources and light markers by military forces, campers and recreational divers. Glow sticks are considered the only light source that is safe for use immediately following any catastrophic emergency.

In glow sticks, phenol is produced as a byproduct. It is advisable to keep the mixture away from skin and to prevent accidental ingestion if the glow stick case splits or breaks. If spilled on skin, the chemicals could cause slight skin irritation, swelling, or, in extreme circumstances, vomiting and nausea. Children of all ages could bite into them or get the liquid into their eyes. The substance inside these glowing items is dibutyl phthalate--a clear, oily, colorless liquid. It is low in toxicity but can irritate the eyes, skin and mucous membranes.

In the event that a glow stick breaks, the National Poison Control center advises:

• For ingestion: Don’t be alarmed if your child’s lips and tongue glow for a few minutes. Wipe the mouth with a clean wet washcloth; go over the tongue and around the gum line. Give the child a glass of water.

• For eye exposure: Irrigate exposed eye(s) with a generous amount of room temperature water for at least 10 minutes. Call the Poison Center for persistent irritation, swelling, pain or sensitivity to light.

• For skin exposure: Remove any clothing that is wet with the liquid. Wash the exposed skin areas thoroughly with soap and water.

If you are looking for a way to light up your child’s Halloween costume, LED and EL wire are safer, non-toxic and re-usable alternatives to glow sticks.

Each country has its specialties. In Belgium it is chocolate, beer and…bread. With its scrumptious textures, seducing scents and exquisite surprises with each bite, bread surely knows how you tempt you. It isn’t that easy to cut it out of your diet, although it is the best decision for your health. Since the industry discovered what it could do to the daily bread to “enrich” it, more and more people get sick eating it. But a raw, living cuisine is always creative, and it offers a tasty, healthy, delicious alternative so you can break and truly indulge your daily bread…

Preparation a few days before

Soak and sprout a few cups of buckwheat

Dry them until crisp at 108°F (You can do this a week before. They keep well for months, so make enough for your pantry)

Soak 1/2 C of sunflower seeds overnight

Soak 2 C of almonds overnight

Make almond milk of the almonds, store cold

Keep the pulp

dry ingredients

1 C gluten free oat flour (grind up rolled oats in a blender or coffee mill)

1/2 C buckwheat flour (grind up your dried buck Wheaties)

3 TBSP coconut flour (optional)

1/4 C flax flour (grind dry flax seeds)

1/2 C psyllium husk

1/8 C pumpkin seeds

1/4 C hempseeds

1/4 Chia seeds

1 tsp sea salt or Himalayan salt (adjust to your own taste

Wet ingredients

2 C almond pulp

3 TBSP date paste (blend some dates with a bit of water into a smooth syrup)

1/2 C of soaked sunflower seeds

1+ 3/4 C almond milk (or just water)

If necessary, add water spoon by spoon

For the Finishing touch

1 TSBP almond oil

A few chopped almonds or a sprinkle of rolled oats

1 TBSP chia seeds

Some pumpkin seeds

instructions

First mix all the dry ingredients well by hand in a big bowl

Add the wet ingredients

Roll up your sleeves and mix well again by hand

Knead the bread for five minutes until you have a firm dough

Shape it by hand or by using a bread mold

Brush the top with some almond oil

Sprinkle the seeds and chopped almonds on top

Push gently so they stick to the dough

If you like, you can carve the top gently to make it look ‘real’

Place the bread on the mesh sheet in the middle of your dehydrator

During the first hour set the temperature at 140°F so the warmth reaches the heart of the bread and you get a nice crust. Don’t worry, your bread will still be alive and raw.

After one hour, lower the heat to 108°F

Depending on the weather and the moist in your bread, dry for 14 hours

Turn the bread now and then

Check with a long needle or a fork if the bread is still moist inside

When dough sticks on the needle or fork, give it more time

At the end, you can slice up the bread (thick slices) and dry them for another hour

tips

• This bread has a slight sour dough taste because of the fermentation of the milk

• If you don’t like the sour dough taste, simply replace the milk by using water

• To satisfy savory cravings, serve thick slices with pesto and cherry tomatoes on top

• Lovely with a raw strawberry or fig jam as breakfast

• It keeps for three days in the refrigerator

• To keep the bread longer, don’t use almond milk, only water

• Experiment with dried fruits or tomatoes, olives, and other kind of nuts...
