Dowdens Pumping began with Trevor Dowden as a one-man operation out of the back of a trusty ute in 1973. In later years, Trevor’s sons Steven, David, and Paul joined the team with differing company roles to help build the company along with specialised staff.

Dowdens Pumping has moved premises several times to accommodate its growth and is now situated at 9-15 Industrial Street in Mackay. Dowdens Pumping employs over 130 staff, with specialised areas of expertise including Agriculture, Mining/Industrial, Home Irrigation, Pool Care Services, domestic and industrial workshop, and an impressive retail outlet.

Dowdens Pumping also has a branch in Mansfield Brisbane, specialising in Water Treatment Solutions and Industrial Pumping. The elliptical cone sump minimizes solid build up and it is also fitted with flushing points. DisC FiLTRATionThese elements are constructed from plastic discs that are stacked onto a telescopic core. The discs are grooved on both sides. These grooves intersect to form the filtration element when compressed on the core. The disc element provides especially effective retention of organic matter.

The effective filtration area is comprised of both the outside surface and the channels formed by the intersected grooves. Suspended organic particulate adheres to the grooved surface. Cleaning the disc element is made simple by the unique design of the telescopic core, which allows the discs to separate during the cleaning process. Two O-rings allow perfect sealing inside the filter housing.

sCReen FiLTRATionRaw water flows into the filter through the cylindrical filter element from the inside-out, causing particles to accumulate on the inside screen surface which causes the development of “filter cake”. The accumulation of the filter cake causes pressure differential to develop between the filter inlet and outlet.

A pressure switch senses the pressure differential across the screen and when it reaches a preset value the cleaning process is operated automatically.

meDiA FiLTRATionFiltering with media filters is also recognised as depth filtration. The media filters perform the filtration of water through a thick layer of graded particles. These particles can be sand, gravel or other granular materials. The filtration rate depends on the effective size of the bedding and velocity through the filter.

Water enters through the filter inlet and percolates through the filter bed. When suspended matter comes in contact with media particles, it absorbs it. Clean water then goes via the filtration nozzles through the filter outlet.

Cleaning is performed by backwashing. Water enters in reverse direction – from the nozzles upwards, causing suspension of the filter bed, thus releasing the suspended matter from the bedding and it is flushed through a backwash valve.

Backwashing may be done automatically according to pressure differential and / or according to time. Automatic operation, for single or multi units manifolded for complete filtration solutions.

uLTRA FiLTRATionUltrafiltration is using many small tubular hollow fibre membrane made from material with a very fine porous nature. The membranes can be as small as 0.9 mm in diameter. The membrane is made of material like PVC or PVDF. The liquid blisters through the membrane leaving the unwanted partials behind. The partials left behind are then flushed away from the system. Systems can be designed to suit your application. Containerized plants are available and can be easily relocated if required.

Ultra Filtration is designed to replace conventional multi-media filter in city water treatment to produce crystal clear safe water for both commercial and industrial applications. It is a chemical free filtration process that is both user and environmental friendly. These units take up less room then the conventional clarifying system which in turn is a saving on building space.

The system incorporates UF membrane modules filled with Polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) hollow-fibres. The housing has a thick robust reinforced ribbed body that can withstand up to 1.6MPa burst pressure. The individual fibre is manufactured to remove suspended particulates, colloidal material, bacteria and high molecular weight material down to 0.01 micron.

Ion Exchange Systems (IX)waterSoftenersandDeionisers: IX systems can remove metals and elements including alkalinity, arsenic, chromate’s, organics and total dissolved solids from water. Softening systems remove calcium and magnesium hardness minerals. Deionisers remove all ionic species with subsequent high purity water used for commercial, industrial and laboratory applications.

High Purity Water SystemHigh Purity water is used in industries such as medical, laboratory, pharmaceutical, electronics and powder coating operations. Generally these systems require a number of treatment steps before attaining the high level of purity desired. The pre-treatment may include sediment and carbon filtration, micro-filtration, softening, reverse osmosis and/or deionisation and ultraviolet disenfection.

DisinfectionUltraviolet:Ultraviolet disinfection units are used to protect against bacterial contamination in the water supply. UV units consist of a stainless steel chamber, quartz sleeve, high quality lamp and control box. Options include automatic lamp wipers and UV intensity monitors.Ozone: Ozone disinfection is effective against bacteria,viruses and spores. Ozone does not produce toxic by-products such as trihalomethanes that can occur with chlorine. It also oxides and precipitates iron and manganese and acts to remove colour and organics.ChemicalDosing:Treatment plants require some form of chemical dosing system to inject chemicals such as flocculants, coagulants, acid, soda ash, lime and chlorine to assist the treatment process adjust pH and to disinfect the treated water.

QuALiTY AssuRAnCe exeCuTiVe summARYThis is to certify Dowdens Pumping Sales and Services (Mackay) Pty Ltd (Dowdens) status and policy on Quality Assurance.

Dowdens Pumping moved down the path of QA in 1996 employing an external consultant and formulating and documenting a Quality Assurance system as per the required Australian Standard.

The basis for Dowdens Pumping undertaking this exercise was two fold:

a. Ever increasing need for monitoring and provision of quality service and products.

b. Demand from our customers, particularly Government departments of this accreditation.

In April 1996, documentation of our QA system was complete and installed. All documentation and paperwork was forwarded to the Queensland Government Quality Assessment Unit (QAU) for evaluation and arrangements for an audit to be conducted for accreditation to proceed.

The QAU advised that Dowdens Pumping QA system and documentation were in order, but they would not be providing an audit or accreditation because they had changed their policy and Dowdens Pumping now fell outside their supply guidelines for accredited suppliers i.e. our business, because of our volume of sales to the Government, was not rated as “High Risk” and therefore did not need to be accredited to supply the Queensland Government.

Dowdens Pumping were officially advised that its documentation and procedures was correct and that it would be included in the Queensland Government’s register of Quality Assured Suppliers as “Self Attested”.

At that stage Dowdens Pumping looked at its options and the demands its customers were making, the costs involved with gaining and maintaining QA accreditation, and the relevant benefits that accreditation would bring to the Company and its customers.

Dowdens Pumping took the decision to maintain the QA system that it had put in place and follow its documented procedures without seeking accreditation. The system has operated successfully since 1996, and we have had no problems with this. All new employees are taken through this system when they are inducted, and all other procedures are followed as per our system, with the exception of some of this QA administrative procedures that relate to the system itself, which we deem unnecessary.

Pump and associated equipment are stripped and assessed in accordance with our strict procedures. A detailed quotation is prepared and submitted for approval. All observations, wear, faults etc. are recorded onto a strip sheet, and a report can be submitted with our quotation if required.

When repairing equipment we endeavour, where possible and practical, to use genuine components. Where this is not possible, we will reproduce or procure components in accordance with manufacturers specifications and tolerances.

NOTE: Non genuine components will only be used after consultation and confirmation from client.

ASSEMBLYANDTESTINGAssembly is conducted in accordance with a procedure and “quality” check sheets, which are completed by the Tradesperson concerned to ensure all manufacturers specifications and client requests, have been adhered to.

Completed units are then painted and tagged with a stainless steel label recording date of work and job number, which then is also logged onto the data base.

NOTE: Customers may request specific colours for equipment.

Submersible pumps are test run for 3 - 4 hours and submerged for 24 hours prior to dispatch to ensure no moisture intrusion has occurred. During test running of unit a comprehensive test sheet is used, on which all performance results are recorded.

Where possible all equipment is tested prior to dispatch from our workshop. We can wet test, performance test pump units from 45KW. Bigger units can be tested on request.
