Totally drug-resistant TB emerges in India… Discovery
of a deadly form of TB highlights crisis of
'mismanagement'. Physicians in India have identified a
form of incurable tuberculosis there, raising further
concerns over increasing drug resistance to the disease1.
Although reports call this latest form a “new entity”,
researchers suggest that it is instead another
development in a long-standing problem. The discovery
makes India the third country in which a completely
drug-resistant form of the disease has emerged,
following cases documented in Italy in 2007 and Iran in
2009.

NPPA UNDER HEALTH MINISTRY… For making
available quality drugs at reasonable prices, there is a
centrally administered by National Pharmaceutical Pricing
Authority (NPPA) of the Union chemicals ministry. NPPA
has so far failed to achieve this objective on account of
various reasons. The Centre has been exploring the
possibilities of bringing about a mechanism by which
quality essential drugs are made available at low prices.
Currently, the NPPA under the chemicals ministry is the
regulatory agency to control the prices while the CDSCO
under the health department is looking after the drug
approvals. This has prompted Cabinet secretariat to think
in terms of bringing an effective coordination between
different departments. Of late, Planning Commission has
recommended that National Pharmaceuticals Pricing

may develop kidney failure. Voraxaze is an enzyme that
rapidly reduces methotrexate levels by breaking the
chemotherapy drug down to a form that can be
eliminated from the body. Voraxaze is administered
