A Calgary Alderman is disappointed city council did not approve anoutright ban recommendation on cosmetic pesticide use in the city.

Ward 11 Alderman BRIAN PINCOTT said he was surprised about theturn of events in council yesterday since aldermen previously sup-ported the ban. But council will move ahead with a bylaw to reducethe use of pesticides.

Its good for the environment, its good for the health and safety of citizens, and its proven to be good for business,

so why are we not moving forward with it ? PINCOTT said.

I am honorary Canadian observer on the U.S. Pesticide Working Group. The factthat there is no timeline for stopping the cosmetic pesticide use in Calgary makes

the proposed bylaw an exercise in futility. To suggest, as some Councillors did,that there is as yet insufficient evidence of pesticide harm is proof that altogether

too many Councillors have succumbed to industry propaganda. Shame on Cal-gary's City Council for rejecting a decent pesticide bylaw in favour of one that is

What are these ? City council appears to be covering the sensiblemiddle ground when it comes to drafting a bylaw to reduce the useof pesticides in Calgary.

Although it will drive the antipesticide lobby buggy, council issteering clear of an outright ban.

Instead, regulations designed to reduce the use of pesticides, whichinclude insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides, will be beefed up.

Commercial applicators will face tougher licensing standards andwill be required to notify neighbours before treating a lawn.

While the bylaw will accommodate some spotspraying, it will re-duce or ban herbicides designed to be used over large areas.

The province has already announced it is banning herbicidefertilizer combination products on Jan. 1 [ 2010 ].

These weed and feed type products accounted for more than one

third of all pesticides sold in Calgary in 2005.

It's been estimated that application of this product can use 10 timesthe amount of herbicide actually needed. [ WRONG ! ]

It only makes sense that we reduce the number of chemicals in ourenvironment that eventually wind up leaching into our limitedwater supply. [ IT IS A MYTH TO BELIEVE THAT PROFESSIONAL LAWNCARE APPLICATIONS CONTAMINATE THE CITY WATER SUPPLY ! ]

Reducing our reliance on pesticides is a nobrainer, but introducinga difficulttoenforce bylaw isn't the way to do it.

Africans died because of the ban on DDT ? DDT saved millions of children

situation with the following excerpt from his wonderful book entitled State ofFear

Paul K. Driessen wrote the book EcoImperialism Green Power, BlackDeath in 2003. He claimed that malaria deaths are TWO MILLION PER

who survive the disease are too sick to work or take care of their families.

They become more vulnerable to subsequent diseases, such as AIDS, dysentery,

and tuberculosis. The survivors are obviously not able to adequately contribute

to the economy. Its no wonder that SubSaharan Africa is one of the most

destitute regions on Earth.

It has been observed that the removal of DDT showed that the West has a lack ofcompassion for those suffering in Third World countries. Just like Miss Kazim-

iera. (or Miss Jean Cottam, or K. Jean Cottam, or whatever name this 80yearold widow with no recognized credentials decides to use when it suits her ).
