Mr. Gathercole has been a con-sultant and instructor for decades. Mr. Gathercole has been following the evolution of eennvviirroonnmmeennttaall tteerrrroorriissmm for over a quartercentury. His involvement in environ-mental issues reached a fevered pitch in the 1990s, when he orchestrated, with oth-

ers, legal action against unethical and excessive municipal regulations restricting theuse of pest control products. ( i.e. the Town of Hudson. ) Although he can be accusedof being aannttiieennvviirroonnmmeennttmmoovveemmeenntt, he is, in fact, simply a strong advocate forthe GGrreeeenn SSppaaccee IInndduussttrryy . However, this position has not precluded him fromcriticizing the industry itself. Nonetheless, his vast and unending knowledge of ourlong journey with environmental issues is uunnddeenniiaabbllee. I applaud the Ontario government for leading the ban with the best legislationwhen it comes to cosmetic pesticide use. This law is the most health protectivein North America. The list of banned pesticides trumps the old model of Que-

bec's 20 banned pesticides with one almost five times that number. Even 2,4D makes the list.

Knowing that scientific research has shown that pesticides are linked to can-

cer, neurological illnesses and birth defects, with children especially vulner-able, I applaud this more stringent piece of legislation.

This spring, we will not have to worry about ourchildren stepping outdoors toplay and being blasted by toxins for the sake of a green lawn. In truth, ourlawns will be greener with the absence of these toxic chemicals.

The Cosmetic Pesticide Ban Act is a good step in the ongoing cancer preven-tion battle.

Most people know diet and exercise alone will not prevent cancer. We must rid

our planet of toxins that are known carcinogens. Hopefully, we will be readingabout more stringent guidelines when it comes to things such as asbestos and

bisphenyol A, etc. Until then, at leastOntarians can go outside this springand breathe a little easier when it comes to pesticide use.

trol products in addii lluuttee form. Parents who apply these same products them-selves must store them in the home in a ccoonncceennttrraatteedd form. DDiilluutteedd pprroodd--uuccttss aarree tteennss ooff tthhoouussaannddss ooff ttiimmeess lleessss ttooxxiicc tthhaann ccoonncceennttrraatteedd pprroodd--uuccttss.

Time for a commentary from an independent perspective. Ofcourse, the ffeeaarrmmoonnggeerriinnggEEXXPPEERRTTSS wish to give the impression that chil-dren and adults are being exposed to cancercausing agents whenever a pro-fessional lawn care company applies their products. The same tactics wereused by Rachel Carson and her SSTTEEPPCCHHIILLDDRREENN in trying to rid the world of

DDDDTT . Allegedly, large numbers of birds were killed after applications of DDDDTT. Unfortunately, there are no valid reports, or even photos for that mat-ter, that support this bird allegation. And, there are no valid reports that con-firm problems with children. Or anybody else for that matter. IItt iiss aallll ssppeeccuu--llaattiioonn.

Personally, we find that it is rreepprreehheennssiibbllee to use children as WWEEAAPP--OONNSS OOFF MMAASSSS DDEESSTTRRUUCCTTIIOONN in order to further the interests of the EENNVVII--RROONNMMEENNTTAALL MMOOVVEEMMEENNTT and its political allies.
