Open to change and new ideas to increase efficiency and effectiveness (Direct Delivery, AAP, upgraded technology, staff changes)

5

FOOD BANK OF WNY

WEAKNESSES Lack of space, condition of facility; inefficient storage and location;

restricts growth and distribution

Heavy reliance on “Check Out Hunger” program, state/federal funding and events for revenue grow

Lack of outreach efforts to businesses

Inability to efficiently and accurately track and cultivate donor base

Lack of proper analysis of Direct Mail efforts, therefore inhibiting growth of the program

Inability to reach/serve all in need (unable to reach all in need in Cattaraugus County because there are many outlying areas; outgrowth of facility/truck in Chautauqua County)

No central agency database to ensure no duplication of services

Risk of losing strong leadership and no succession planning

Need to better procure and distribute fresh food products

Aging volunteers and lack of coordinated volunteers to help with day to day operation

Need to better educate general public on the Food Bank (who we are, what we do) and how inadequate nutrition and hunger affect our community 6

FOOD BANK OF WNY OPPORTUNITIES

Identify eligibility for and solicit grants and other funding sources

Expansion of Direct Mail and donor cultivation/acquisition programs

Continued development of Endowment Program and focus on a few major events that drive revenue growth

Expand relationships with local farmers and retail partners to procure more food (e.g. gleaning)

Enhance relationships with healthcare industry, local nonprofits, and other agencies (City Mission, Red Cross) to investigate distribution opportunities and continue to build on the message of providing nutritious food

Consistent branding of Food Bank WNY image regarding hunger and expand nutrition awareness

Enhance community awareness of hunger and related issues (possibly through social media)

Expand current programs (Direct Delivery, mobile pantry, Check Out Hunger, Food Drive)

Investigate school-based pantries and other non-traditional distribution methods

Assist agencies with referring clients to other social services and develop client tracking system

Implement and communicate formal succession planning and cross-training program

Reallocation of resources (staff, monies) where needed within the organization

FOOD BANK OF WNY

THREATS

Short or long term cuts in funding at the state or federal level

Increased cost of food and demand continues to exceed food supply

Decreased food donations from retailers and manufacturers (potential closings or consolidations of manufacturers)

Loss or retirement of key staff, attrition of board members without adequate replacement

Loss of any key partnerships, especially Check Out Hunger donations raised by Wegmans, and WGRZ media exposure
