SAPS 16-Daycampaign pays off>> Self-defence training course held at air force base
TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]
ISIPINGO SAPS launched asuccessful 16 Days of Activismcampaign, interacting with the
community on several platformsaccumulating into a self-defenceworkshop, hosted by CombatCoachingforSAPSIsipingodetectiveand the South African Air Force atthe South African Air Force Base onMonday.
“At the Isipingo charge office andvictim-friendly centre, women whoreport physical abuseareoftenbad-ly injured and have no form of de-fence.
“Theworkshop is seen as a basicself-defence training course whichthese women can teach victims ofdomestic violence,” says CaptainDavid Ragavan.
The physical abuse and traumavictims go through often leads tofacts being misconstrued.
SAPS Isipingo therefore worksclosely with Bobbi Bear.
“All cases are referred to BobbiBear first. It assists victims withmedical attentionand traumacoun-selling first, then we get the facts. This is working very well,” Ragavansays.

Resist road rage
TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]
STRESSandangermanagementcon-sultant Alan Symons says there is adefinite increase in road rage in gen-eral over the festive season.
“One of themany triggers are thatwe are intolerant of GP [Gauteng]drivers, we perceive them to be baddriversandgetupsetwith them‘clog-gingourroads’ inholidayperiods, yetAmanzimtoti is dependent ontourism.”
Symons says this perception of“ourworld”versus“the realworld” iswhat leads toangerand/orroadrage.For instance in our world we believeeverybodyshouldobey the law,but inthe real world it doesn’t happen.
He says road rage can be danger-ousasyou losecontrol of yourself andyour emotions behind the steeringwheel. “Clearly being a road rager isunacceptable.Whatifyouhavesome-one else in the car like your wife orchildren? Their lives could be put atrisk. You also do not know who youmight be starting with. What if they
low the rules and it was found thatbreaking road rules was consideredthemostdangerousbehaviouradultsengaged in which created high levelsof anxiety and fear in children.”
Hesayswedon’tmanageouremo-tions, stress and behaviour well.
“When you get into an emotionalstate, you stop thinking cleverly, clearly and rationally. Additionallyadrenalin floods your body puttingyou into ‘fight’ mode. You perceiveyou are being disrespected andthreatened and you need to get ‘re-venge’.
“You can land up doing things youregret and could land up in court orjail.”
Beforeasituationgetsoutofhand, drivers should calm down, breathedeeply, letoutasigh, turntheradioupand don’t take things personally as itis usually not about you.

VALUED teacher Felicity Grenfell is retir-ing after 40 years, the majority of whichshe spent at Athlone Park PrimarySchool (APPS) with her husband thecurrent principal, Geoff Grenfell.
“I started teaching at Kloof SeniorPrimary and when we relocated to Pine-town at Pinetown Senior Primary I tooka break while my children were growingup.
“However, when they started schoolIwantedtogobacktoteachingandthatwas when I took on a department postat APPS,” Felicity says.
“My fondest memories are when I
to see how they mature and grow andto be able to make a difference in theirlives.”
She says the hardest thing aboutteaching is when you see a child who isstruggling and you try to help them, butyou cannot “break through”.
“Unfortunately, I don’t ‘switch off’ I
do tend to take my problems with meand I have had sleepless nights overmany pupils,” she says.
Themostrewardingpartofteachingis when past pupils come to thank you, hugging you.
“It makes it all worth the effort, es-pecially when you find that some ofthose pupils who struggled have be-come successful students or adults,”she adds.
“The same rewards apply to teach-ing at the same school for a long time— it enables one to see pupils grow fromsmall into young adults.
“It is lovely to be involved in theAmanzimtoti community. Geoff and Ilove walking and we always see the chil-dren taking part in activities other thanschool and you get to know more aboutthem.”

Community watch: LSD, living hell
LSD is one of the most potent, mood-changing chem-icals around. It is manufactured from lysergic acid, which is found in the ergot fungus that grows on ryeand other grains.
Known as “acid”, among many other names, LSDis sold in small tablets called “microdots”, capsulesor gelatin squares called “window panes”. It is some-times added to absorbent paper, which is then divid-ed into small squares decorated with designs or car-
toon characters. LSD leads the user to the same place— a serious disconnection from reality.
The physical effects of LSD are dilated pupils, higher or lower body temperature, sweating or chillslike “goose bumps”, loss of appetite, sleeplessnessand a dry mouth. The mental effects are delusions,an artificial sense of euphoria or certainty, distortionof one’s sense of time and identity, impaired depthperception, impaired time perception, distorted per-
ception of the size andshape of objects, movements, colour, sounds, touch and theuser’s own body image.
LSD users call anLSD experience a “trip”— typically lasting 12hours or so.
When things gowrong, which oftenhappens, it is called a“bad trip” — anothername for a living hell.

Communityparticipation is vitalWITH many functions and festivi-ties taking place in the run-up toyear’s-end and the new year, theSAPS, municipalities and law-en-forcements teams remind com-munitiestobeextravigilant atthistime.
In addition to it being afavourite and “ripe-for-the-pick-ing” time for criminals, load shed-ding is adding to criminals’ “to do”list. Be vigilant and report any-thing or any person who looks sus-picious, no matter how insignifi-cant you may think it is.
Be vigilant on the beach and inthe busy malls and always haveyour children in your vision — don’t
take your eyes off them even forone second, because that’s all ittakes, a second.
That aside, don’t forget to en-joy this time for it is family time,a time to catch up and enjoy quali-ty time with friends and relationsand a time to eat, drink (not drive)and be merry, so go forth.
And, don’t forget to spare athought for those who will beworking throughout this festiveseason, for they too have familieswho they might not be able tospend time with because they willbe keeping you safe, and they toohave a vital role to play in your life.
Till the next issue, be safe.

Load-sheddingincentiveFOR the moment load shedding is here to stay, sosays Eskom, although on the news this week I heardthat load shedding has played a small part in assist-ing with the power situation.
The way I understand it that there are blocks —a, b, c, d, and so on — and they are on a certain gridand every grid has its “day and/or night in the dark”(I do stand corrected, but that’s not my point).
Why doesn’t Eskom give each grid’s residents’ in-centive to switch off non-essential or items thataren’t in use during the day, or night for that matter— geysers, swimming pool pumps, and so on — bysaying that if residents adhere to this, the load shed-ding in their area (their grid) will get some light (ex-cuse the pun) relief, in other words, everyone comesto the “electrifying party”.
I’msurethiswillgivemanyresidentstheincentiveto assist, but the way things are now, people are real-ly angry and feel that Eskom should have put planB in place long ago to prevent this situation, whichI call an “early criminal Christmas”.
I’m not sure if this is possible, but it is food forthought, Eskom.
