May
and
ContentsWelcome to May on the Far South Coast - autumn is well and truly here, and thank heavens we've had some rain and things are beautiful and green again.
At the Eden Killer Whale Museum there's a great exhibition about a man truly dedicated to his town and his country - J.R. Logan. He established Eden's first electricity plant a century ago, as well as making many other important contributions to the township. Details are on page 6.
If you need a good laugh then Spectrum Theatre Group has just the thing - the darkly devious It's My Party (And I'll Die If I Want To). Written by Elizabeth Coleman of Secret Bridesmaids Business fame, the production looks at the funny side of death. For more information, head over to page 11.
Anyone feeling the need to stretch the legs should sign up for the Merimbula Fun Run. With a 5km or 10km, you don't have to be a super-athlete to participate. You can get your friends and family to sponsor you and raise funds for the Cancer Council NSW. Find out more on page 13.
Finally, local potter Daniel Lafferty has brought together ceramic artists from around Australia and overseas for the inaugural On The Edge Of The Shelf Festival. Focussing on woodfired ceramics, there will be kilns specially constructed on site at Mystery Bay. The Festival is an amazing opportunity to hear talks, see demonstrations and exhibitions plus hear fabulous local performers like Heath Cullen. See pages 18 and 19 for details.
That's it for May - enjoy!

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.
Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.
A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.
You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.
Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.
The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

J R Logan: Community & Nation exhibition at Killer Whale MuseumWhen you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer
whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away in his family home at East Boyd in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects
Top: J R Logan’s wife and daughters on the steps of their family home, Edrom. Gandon Collection, Eden Killer Whale Museum
Above: Portrait of John R Logan Courtesy of Mr T Bell
on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The exhibition is on show until 22nd February 2015. More information is available at www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

Pambula Village

Take a walk around Panboola

Relax with a coffee or lunch at Settlers Cottage
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.
Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.
Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Art Therapy is now available with Suzi Alesandra at the Beach Street Dental Centre in Merimbula.Suzi is a highly qualified, registered Art Therapist and has practiced in Melbourne privately and in Mental Health. Suzi also has extensive experience in healing with Reiki, Flower Essences and Yoga, and offers Flower Essence remedies as an adjunct to Art Therapy.
Art therapy - what is it? Art therapy is the marriage of two disciplines: art and psychology. It is based on the understanding that the creative process of art-making is healing and life-enhancing and that using the non-verbal language of art-making (colours, lines and symbols) is a potent form of communication. The non-verbal language of art can communicate that which is beyond words, or speak for us when words fail – and talent is not a pre-requisite. The therapist and client/s develop a dynamic interpersonal relationship, with clear boundaries and goals. Understanding art therapy requires first-hand experience since it’s a dynamic
therapy in which one participates in one’s own treatment – with art-making.The profession has been recognised and regulated around the world by organisations such as ANZATA (Australian and New Zealand Art Therapy Association). Art psychotherapy is based on psychodynamic principles, and most art therapists utilise varied evidence-based theoretical frameworks. It can be employed both as a therapeutic and diagnostic tool, and it differs from traditional art-making in that the emphasis is on making meaning and on the process rather than on the end-product.Art therapy is practiced with individuals
as well as groups, with children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. Its use has been documented with an enormous variety of issues including addiction, serious illness, trauma, prisoners, war veterans, people with disabilities, families experiencing difficulties, and individuals experiencing a wide spectrum of emotional disorders. Local Suzi Alesandra is a registered art therapist working in Merimbula. She has practiced both privately and in mental health. Suzi also has extensive experience with Flower Essences and offers the option of combining them with Art Therapy for an enhanced outcome.

Laugh your way through It's My Party (And I'll Die If I Want To) This deviously dark comedy, written by Elizabeth Coleman and directed by Spectrum Theatre Group's Bill Deveril, promises to be a very funny exposé of a typically dysfunctional Australian family, who are suddenly faced with the spectre of death.Set in Australian suburbia, it focuses on an over-bearing, emotionally absent father who gathers his family together to let them know he has only 108 minutes to LIVE. He has deigned to give each of his adult children fifteen minutes of his undivided attention before the clock strikes 10.43pm.The writer of Secret Bridesmaids
Business, Elizabeth Coleman, serves up yet again a highly entertaining night out. Her dialogue is sharp and funny and never fails to make us laugh at ourselves. Please note - This production is aimed for an adult audience.Spectrum Theatre Group is performing It's My Party.(And I'll Die If I Want To) at Twyford Hall, Merimbula on May 17th, 23rd, 24th, 30th and 31st at 8pm (Cabaret Style -Tickets $26.00) and Sunday, May 18th and 25th at 2pm (Theatre Style - Tickets $23.00).Tickets are available from April 19 via Spectrum Theatre Group's new online

Dragon play at Club SapphireUnlike many bands, there are three distinct ages that define the evolution of iconic rock band Dragon. The eras represent the rites of passage that have made the band and its music what it is today, carving out a special place in the popular music history of Australia and New Zealand. The three key eras in Dragon’s four decade history have been dubbed the Young Years (1973 – 1979), the Glory Years (1982 – 1998) and the Phoenix Years (from 2006 on). The line-up of the band for the current Dragon Trilogy Tour features Todd Hunter, Mark Williams, Pete Drummond and Bruce Reid.Founder and bass player Todd Hunter says the band will revisit some obscure older songs they have an affection for and play the hits from each of the eras. “We’ll also have a mystery song slot where we will play a different song every night,” he says. “We’ll take requests for the slot on our Facebook page. The hits speak for themselves. Our task with those is to play them and let the crowd sing along. The Dragon Trilogy Tour is a way of honoring these eras through the songs and a way of making sense of everything that has happened in the last 40 years.”The band celebrated their 500th show of the Phoenix Years in 2013 and have no plans to stop.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.
Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.
In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.
The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.
A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.
Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the
only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.
Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November.
There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.
An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.
Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.
Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.
The Tathra MTB Enduro is a series of mountain bike races (10km - 100km) through the beautiful bush surrounding Tathra; this year it's on April 12 - 13.

The series of 26 postures (asanas) & 2 breathing exercises (pranayamas) are physically & mentally challenging yet suitable for all ages, abilities & levels of experience.
The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is far more than a working village. It is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in.Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker. Many of the town's early buildings have been preserved, so it's easy to imagine what the village must have looked like one hundred years ago.Situated on the Princes Highway between Bega and Narooma, Cobargo is a great spot for a pit stop when travelling.Every February Cobargo comes alive with its Show and Folk Festival, which features performers from around Australia and the world.
Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go.Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and canoeing. Throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River, or head out on one of the local charter boats.Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue Pool, set on the edge of the ocean at the base of the cliffs off Scenic Drive.Go bush walking in nearby National Parks and State Forests, or bird watching in the Bermagui Wetlands Flora and Fauna Reserve. There's great mountain bike trails to check out, or just enjoy a leisurely cycle around town.Enjoy a round of golf at the Bermagui Country Club's beautiful 18-hole golf course.; try not to get too distracted by the views! Each year in March Bermagui holds its Seaside Fair where the Bermagui community comes together to celebrate. Also in March is Sculpture On The Edgefeaturing amazing sculptures in
beautiful locations like the headlands around Horseshoe Bay. Similar to Bondi's Sculpture By The Sea, Sculpture On The Edge brings art to the community, with public forums, exhibitions of smaller works as well as the sometimes controversial large outdoor pieces.Close to Bermagui, Wallaga Lake is one of the largest coastal lakes in New South Wales. On the Wallaga Lake Road is the Montreal Goldfield where you can take a guided tour and learn about the discovery of gold in the 1880s at Australia's only seaside gold mine.

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.
Tilba LeatherTilba Leather was established in 1982, and proprietors Phil and Debbie Elton are very proud to have supplied their customers with quality leathergoods for the past 30 years. It’s no surprise though that the business is still going strong after 30 years when you discover the quality of the beautiful leather goods at Tilba Leather.Phil is a self-taught leather craftsman, and Tilba Leather is one of the reasons why Central Tilba is considered the Arts and Craft Centre of the South Coast. From belts, bridles, whips, saddle repairs and all manner of things leather, Tilba Leather stocks both new and exciting merchandise, as well as Phil’s creations, but the focus is definitely on Australian leatherwork. Tilba Leather also has a fantastic range of footware, with beautiful Naot and other brands of leather shoes, and quality ugg boots to keep you toasty warm in winter. If you're looking for some ideas for
birthday presents, you can't go past one of Phil's beautiful hand-made belts, or have a look at the colourful and functional Mywalit range of purses and bags that Tilba Leather stock.Debbie and staff are on hand to provide advice and help seven days a week, so step into Tilba Leather and be transported back to your childhood as the aroma of real leather touches your

What to See & Do Take a trip to Montague Island
Nature Reserve to watch wildlife
Explore Wagonga Inlet by boat or kayak
Follow the Mill Bay boardwalk and look out for the magnificent stingrays
Stroll around town and check out the cafes
Enjoy a round of golf at the spectacular Narooma Golf Club
Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.
Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday.
The town manages to retain a 1950s fishing village vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in.
With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean.
Narooma has some easy cycling tracks, as well as being a great base for serious riders who are happy tackling rides 50km or longer.
Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages.
The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea.
There are several charter boats to take you out to Montague Island, as well as fishing charter operators if you're into game fishing.
If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966.
World War 11 must have seemed a long way from Moruya to begin with, but as the war progressed, it had a direct impact on the town. The Moruya aerodrome became an advanced operational base, and in 1942 a trawler was attacked by the Japanese offshore between Moruya and Batemans Bay. On 25 December 1944 the US liberty ship SS Robert J. Walker was torpedoed off Moruya by the German submarine U-862. It sank the next day between Moruya and Bega, with 2 people dying and 67 survivors.
These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden
poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.
Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town.
European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851.
Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete.
Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in

Old buildings, Mogo
www.monthlyimag.com.au
The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.
To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.
Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.
After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.
Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.
There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards.
Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.

Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.
