At the Eden Killer Whale Museum there's a great exhibition about a man truly dedicated to his town and his country - J.R. Logan. He established Eden's first electricity plant a century ago, as well as making many other important contributions to the township. Details are on page 6.

If you need a good laugh then Spectrum Theatre Group has just the thing - the darkly devious It's My Party (And I'll Die If I Want To). Written by Elizabeth Coleman of Secret Bridesmaids Business fame, the production looks at the funny side of death. For more information, head over to page 11.

Anyone feeling the need to stretch the legs should sign up for the Merimbula Fun Run. With a 5km or 10km, you don't have to be a super-athlete to participate. You can get your friends and family to sponsor you and raise funds for the Cancer Council NSW. Find out more on page 13.

Finally, local potter Daniel Lafferty has brought together ceramic artists from around Australia and overseas for the inaugural On The Edge Of The Shelf Festival. Focussing on woodfired ceramics, there will be kilns specially constructed on site at Mystery Bay. The Festival is an amazing opportunity to hear talks, see demonstrations and exhibitions plus hear fabulous local performers like Heath Cullen. See pages 18 and 19 for details.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

J R Logan: Community & Nation exhibition at Killer Whale MuseumWhen you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer

whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away in his family home at East Boyd in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

It can be employed both as a therapeutic and diagnostic tool, and it differs from traditional art-making in that the emphasis is on making meaning and on the process rather than on the end-product.Art therapy is practiced with individuals

as well as groups, with children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. Its use has been documented with an enormous variety of issues including addiction, serious illness, trauma, prisoners, war veterans, people with disabilities, families experiencing difficulties, and individuals experiencing a wide spectrum of emotional disorders. Dragon play at Club SapphireUnlike many bands, there are three distinct ages that define the evolution of iconic rock band Dragon. The eras represent the rites of passage that have made the band and its music what it is today, carving out a special place in the popular music history of Australia and New Zealand. The three key eras in Dragon’s four decade history have been dubbed the Young Years (1973 – 1979), the Glory Years (1982 – 1998) and the Phoenix Years (from 2006 on). The line-up of the band for the current Dragon Trilogy Tour features Todd Hunter, Mark Williams, Pete Drummond and Bruce Reid.Founder and bass player Todd Hunter says the band will revisit some obscure older songs they have an affection for and play the hits from each of the eras. “We’ll also have a mystery song slot where we will play a different song every night,” he says. “We’ll take requests for the slot on our Facebook page. The hits speak for themselves. Our task with those is to play them and let the crowd sing along. The Dragon Trilogy Tour is a way of honoring these eras through the songs and a way of making sense of everything that has happened in the last 40 years.”The band celebrated their 500th show of the Phoenix Years in 2013 and have no plans to stop.

Merimbula Fun Run raising funds for a great causeMerimbula's annual Fun Run is on again on May 25th, and this year participants can choose to fundraise for the Cancer Council NSW.Cancer Council NSW Community Relations Coordinator, Sarah Flynn, said "We’re so excited that we’ll be able to direct funds raised by Merimbula Fun Run participants not only into research but also into our local programs such as Sun Smart, and to developing new services in the area”.“We’re hoping to implement a General and Practical Support service in which volunteers provide patient transport, carer respite and companionship,

among other services. Funds raised from the Fun Run participants will support the development of this wonderful program in the Bega Valley.”With both a 5km run starting at 8.45am and a 10km run at 9.30am, you don't have to be a super athlete to take part. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.

Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about

attractions throughout the region.

Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

1 - 18 May 2014Mystery Bay NSW22 artists from Asia, USA, Europe, UK, South America, New Zealand and AustraliaThis Ceramics woodfire festival will bring together lovers of woodfire providing an exciting exchange of ideas and techniques in May 2014. The invited artists will produce a body of work, build a kiln then complete a long woodfiring.The idyllic location is a 40 acre private property, Corunna Farm, situated near Mystery Bay NSW, surrounded by National Park where Corunna Inlet enters the sea. Invited artists will also give side talks on their practices and techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to mingle, view, talk and interact with the invited potters. Entertainment in the evenings will also be provided.There will be a series of exhibitions at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery, as well as Narek Galleries, Ivy Hill Gallery and Spiral Gallery.The festival is for everyone - ceramics enthusiasts, woodfirers, potters, students, teachers and anyone else with an interest in pottery and cermaics. With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the

only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.

The Tathra MTB Enduro is a series of mountain bike races (10km - 100km) through the beautiful bush surrounding Tathra; this year it's on April 12 - 13.

On the Edge of the Shelf brings international artists to Mystery BayMystery Bay is the venue for an exciting international ceramics festival ”On the Edge of the Shelf" to be held this May.Local potter Daniel Lafferty is the organizer of the event which sees exhibitions, demonstrations and firings involving local, national and international potters and ceramicists.The artists will make and fire a range

of ceramics including functional and sculptural works in a number of kilns, built on site especially for the event.This is a unique opportunity for visitors and locals to experience the making and firing processes involved in the ancient art of wood fired ceramics. Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.

Head south and visit Bodalla's historic All Saints Church

Hyde Park.

The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966.

World War 11 must have seemed a long way from Moruya to begin with, but as the war progressed, it had a direct impact on the town. The Moruya aerodrome became an advanced operational base, and in 1942 a trawler was attacked by the Japanese offshore between Moruya and Batemans Bay. On 25 December 1944 the US liberty ship SS Robert J. Walker was torpedoed off Moruya by the German submarine U-862. It sank the next day between Moruya and Bega, with 2 people dying and 67 survivors.

These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden

poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.

Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town.

European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851.

Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete.

Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

March - 22nd Feb 2015 - JR Logan - Community & Nation, Eden Killer Whale MuseumA fascinating exhibition that delves into the life of J R Logan, one of Eden's great champions. He established the town's first electricity plant a century ago, and is considered by some as the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme. He also ensured that the skeleton of Old Tom, a popular feature at the Eden Killer Whale Museum today, was preserved, and secured a permanent home for it.
