ContentsWelcome to 2015 from Paul, Melinda and Amber at the Far South Coast Monthly iMag. We hope your run to the end of 2014 wasn't too crazy; December often feels like a bit of a marathon!

If you want to slow down, you've come to the right place. The Far South Coast is the perfect place to chill out, whether it's spending time on the beach with a book, contemplating art or hanging out doing fun stuff with the family.

Once you've re-charged the batteries, there's a ton of stuff to do this January.

To experience a great country show, get to Pambula for its Annual Show on January 10th. Horses, wood-chopping, chooks, rides, crafts, produce, FMX stunt riding, demonstrations and old-fashioned country hospitality are all on the menu. Check page 11 for details.

The fantastic Wharf to Waves weekend

is perfect for those who like a bit of a physical challenge, with ocean swims, bike races, beach fun runs and the Flipper Thrash. Funds raised from the weekend are donated back to local community services - see page 25.

Head to the Sapphire Coast Turf Club at Kalaru for a day at the races - there's a great family-friendly atmosphere as well as the best racing on the Coast. See page 13 for more information.

NPWS are running their wonderful Discovery Program throughout January

- there's a wide range of kid-friendly activities to choose from - see page 19.

For some child-free time, adults will love the Kids Club at the Merimbula Aquarium Wharf Restaurant, and so will the kids! Details on page 14.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

J R Logan: Community & Nation exhibition at Killer Whale MuseumWhen you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. Logan built the beautiful Edrom Lodge as his family's home on the shores of Twofold Bay, now a heritage listed property located near the multi-purpose wharf. Taking three years to build and employing many locals, the construction of 'Edrom' as it was then known, was a boon to the Eden economy.Another local landmark that remains a symbol of Logan’s community spirit is the Log Cabin located in Bass Street. When he became aware that his daughter's girl guide brigade were desperate for a meeting place, Logan bought land and sourced information

from overseas on designs of Canadian log cabins. He created a scale model of the cabin, secured building permission from the Girl Guide movement and oversaw the building of the cabin which was opened in 1936.When John Ronaldson Logan passed away at Edrom Lodge in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects on his determination and fervour to build the community’s infrastructure, and expand the town’s opportunities through utilising its natural wealth. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage

of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs.

At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the

ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has with an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth.There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms.

Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters..

Panboola - a great place to walk, ride, enjoy a picnic or watch the birdsOver the last 15 years Panboola has been transformed from a cleared farm and racecourse into a stunning wetland conservation area of international significance.Extensive walking tracks and cycle paths allow visitors to explore the entire 82 hectares. Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.

For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.

Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Kids Club at Merimbula Aquarium Wharf RestaurantLooking for something different for the kids to do this January that's fun, safe and definitely educational and gives the grown ups a bit of a break?During the first three weeks of January, the Merimbula Aquarium and Wharf Restaurant is running a Kids Club on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Each child who is booked into the restaurant for dinner at 6pm receives free entry to the Kids Club, located downstairs in the Aquarium. The Kids Club kicks off at 6.45pm, after dinner has finished, and runs until 7.30pm.Suitable for children 4 – 10 years old, activities include a treasure hunt,

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

Centre is a must...housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. It provides a fascinating insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region.

Bega has survived the downturn in retail relatively well, and has shops stocking everything from antiques, unusual clothing, books, whole foods, cafes, nursery and major retail outlets.

Bega has a thriving arts community, with its own Regional Gallery that hosts major exhibitions throughout the year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located

near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.

On the 18th and 19th January, Tathra becomes the base for the Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. Running since 2002, this event encompasses a fun run, 30km bike ride and a series of ocean swims from the Wharf to the Surf Lifesaving Club.

istoryCentral Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga Mountain, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.

After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.

Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years.

The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit.

The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia.

Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.

Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town.

The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.
