Thanks for coming to spend time on the beautiful Far South Coast - it's a special place to be no matter what time of the year you're here.

It might be cool by the sea but there are plenty of places where it's colder still, like Canberra. Chilly days and nights are sometimes a reason to stay at home, but Canberra has a new festival that celebrates all that's good about winter. The Fireside Festival, held from August 1st - 31st, has 21 venues throughout the Canberra region that will be celebrating things like curling up by a crackling fire with some hearty winter cuisine, while enjoying a glass of fine local red with that loved one or friends. See page 2 opposite for more details.

Another great get-together this August is the South Coast Nationals, Moruya's very own Car, Bike and Truck Spectacular. This is a an alcohol-free family event with events and activities featuring some of Australia's best hot

rods, street machines, customs, classics, vintage, authentic, drag cars, bikes and big rigs, including vehicles not shown before. Details on page 31.

If you'd like to step back in time, head to the Kameruka Bush Dance on Saturday August 4th at the Kameruka Hall. It's a great night out for the family, with wonderful music provided by the Kameruka Bush Orchestra. Bush dancing is also a fantastically fun way to burn off extra winter calories!

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

Eden’s Simply Succulents


Part I of the exhibition reproduces images associated with working and school life of the district and include images associated with the workings of the bustling port of Eden. Part II (on show from 8 October) captures life in the main street of Eden - a time where cars and horses use the same untarred roads. Without television, celebrations and sports were a way to pass time, and Hall captured many of them, from dignitary receptions at the Hotel Australasia to sporting matches and milestones associated with sports such as tennis and football. The large and heavy dresses and hats that ladies once wore to play sport are a stark contrast to the tight body hugging uniforms of today.Hall’s passion for photography has provided a lasting and important legacy for Eden and the district, and because of the generosity of his family, today’s viewers are able to be a part of the life that was during the early to mid 20th century.

William Hall's passion for photography has produced one of the best pictorial legacies of the region. Reflections takes a selective look at the working and recreational life of the region in the early part of the 20th century. William Thomas Hall was born in Bega in 1880. He grew up in Tanja, then moved to Rocky Hall with his new wife, finally settling in Eden, where his seven children were born.Hall’s occupations included farmer, newspaper correspondent, auctioneer and agent, and at one time conducted a coach mail and passenger service between Eden and Towamba and the

Secretary of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows and the Eden Exhibition Society, he and his family were regularly involved in community activities and celebrations – more often than not he was also master of ceremonies. His favourite pastime however was photography. From shipwrecks and whale chases to local school events, Hall’s collection of photographs document the lives of the district’s residents of the first half of the 20th century.For this exhibition, analogue and digital technologies merge. Digital technology has enabled Hall’s photographs to be reproduced larger than actual size, allowing viewers to wonder at the minute details that analogue photography captured close to a century ago. Costume, facial expressions, tools and all other such details of life caught at the time in a single photograph are now larger than life and more easily examined. Viewers have the chance to be drawn into the image as if they were standing alongside the photographer.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, experiencing family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Up close and personal at Potoroo PalacePotoroo Palace's baby Koala, Sapphire, has graduated to an adult. But, say the keepers at the wildlife park, she's very "un-koala". She doesn't sleep as much as Koalas normally do - about 20 hours a day. lnstead she waits for visitors and puts on her unique "leaping" show. "She's more like a monkey," says Head Keeper Vicki McPaul. "A very cheeky monkey."Both she and Evo, a smaller northern koala, enjoy cuddles from the keepers while meeting anyone who comes to visit. Koala pats for everyone are usually the order of the day. Priscilla the short-beaked echidna, and Luna, the albino echidna, are also very fond of meeting people and squinting at them. Just remember there's only one direction to stroke an echidna!Potoroo Palace is just 9km north of Merimbula on the Princes Hwy, and includes walk-through aviaries (where you can try and out-stare, up close, Tawny the tawny frogmouth), dingos, kangaroos who love being fed and scratched, the new flying foxes, young emus, potoroos, pythons, and train rides."We enjoy making things special for our visitors," says Keeper Alexandra Seddon.

Club Sapphire is bringing Christine Anu's new show "Rewind – The Aretha Franklin Songbook" to Merimbula this August. Coinciding with Aretha's 70th birthday this year, Christine is touring Australia with a fantastic tribute show.For 42-year-old Anu, the 70-year-old Grammy Award-winning Franklin has long been a musical hero.“Nobody says it or sings it better than Ms Aretha Franklin,” Anu says.“She is one of my greatest influences and an inspiration to black pride and feminine empowerment. “I truly believe she is the greatest soul singer of our time.”In this glittering stage production, Anu conjures soulful interpretations of Franklin’s most memorable releases including her signature song Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman as well as Chain of Fools, Rock Steady, Today I Sing The Blues and many other classic melodies.As for meeting Aretha, who suffers from poor health, Christine hopes her dream will come true. “It’s on my to-do list.” Christine performs at Club Sapphire on Friday 24th August. Towamba School turns 150 years oldHistoric Towamba School lies nestled in the heart of the beautiful Towamba Valley, 30 km inland from the coastal town of Eden. On August 4th it celebrates its 150th anniversary, making it one of NSW's oldest schools.The school opened its doors in 1862 with 43 enrolments, a number which has fluctuated over the years in conjunction with external factors. Droughts, floods and the rise and decline of local industry affected student attendance in the early years of the school. Today 29 students attend the school and it continues to provide an invaluable service to the local community.The school has retained many of its original features and these can be viewed on the day along with historical and present day educational displays (from chalk boards to interactive white boards!), old-fashioned memorabilia, and school photos, which will appeal to old and young alike. The official opening will commence at 11.00 with a 'Welcome to Country' ceremony accompanied by local Aboriginal dancers, followed by the Towamba School Choir. Entertainment throughout the day will include bush-craft displays, merry musicians, dancers, children's games, and market stalls selling locally- produced goods.Hearty, home-cooked fare will also be available to further guarantee visitors a memorable experience. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.

A safe swimming beach patrolled by Tathra Surf Life Saving Club may also provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are

frequently seen from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for

swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants.

Ello's Cafe has something that possibly no other business on the Far South Coast has - a train carriage. The carriage, C3151, as the plate on its side states, has been a feature of the building since 1998, when the business was known as Wattleton Junction.C3151 began life in 1926 and was one of the first steel electric carriages put into service on the Sydney electric train circuit. Manufactured under licence from the Leeds Forge Company in Great Britain, the carriage was one of 150 used in Sydney.

These single decker railway carriages were affectionately known as 'red rattlers' because of their distinctive Indian red colour and the sash windows which became very noisy over time.Things haven't always gone well for C3151. In 1952 it was involved in a serious accident when the carriage was rear-ended whilst stationary at Berala Station. Being the last carriage on the train, C3151 took the brunt of the impact, telescoping into the carriage in front of it. 10 people were killed and more than 80 people were injured.It took two years for the carriage to be rebuilt, and it continued on active duty until it retired in 1992 to the south coast.Life since then has been very sedate, with C3151 playing host to Ello's customers, who enjoy all day breakfasts, light meals and great coffee in a very unusual setting.There's also an outdoor eating area for those who prefer to avoid potentially haunted train carriages.Ello's Cafe is open 7 days a week from 7am to 5pm

Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of

mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop.

Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just two kilometers down the road from Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, (Pam's Store) and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

New kids on the blockHaving a look around your local nursery will no doubt alert you to an amazing amount of new plants that have been developed in recent times to cater to the needs of just about every form of gardening that is out there.One new trend is to graft Australian native plants to give them the ability to grow outside their natural geographic location. Two fabulous examples of this production method are with Grevillea and Eucalyptus (or Corymbia).Many beautiful Grevillea and Corymbia occur only in Western Australia where the weather and soil types are totally different to the east coast of Australia. To enable these plants to grow on the east coast, grafting onto an east coast species enables the plant to grow and survive with our heavier rainfall and humidity and heavier clay type soils. In the case of Corymbia, nursery growers depending on their location, will use a particular species more suited to their general area than a species that might not necessarily

work somewhere else. An example of this would be on the South Coast of NSW where Eucalyptus maculata (Spotted Gum) might be used as the understock. This particular species is well suited to more coastal regions whereas a grower in another area will use another species more suited to that location.Similarly with Grevillea, although they are a bit more accepting of a single rootstock, that being Grevillea robusta (Silky Oak).It is very important that you, as a buyer, indicate to the nursery person where you are making your purchase, where you actually live so you can be given the correct plant for your location.As well as grafting, an amazing amount of work is being done in hybridising native plants to again come up with “new” varieties that have the attributes of two particular species of plants. In developing these “new” varieties growers are again giving gardeners the opportunity to grow plants that suit a

particular garden theme that might not have been available previously. Examples like using the grey foliage of one plant with the pink flowers of another, allow a different dimension to be incorporated into a garden. Also, many of the strengths of one plant, like the ability to handle a greater range of soil conditions, make the newer variety more available to a wider range of gardeners than was previously there.Although many new varieties are developed this way, many new species have been developed naturally in the bush and are found by chance by an enthusiast wandering through the bush.On your next day off, go for a wander though your local piece of beautiful bushland and have a look at what nature is providing for our senses. You've got to love it.

Mogo Orchid & Fern Nursery

Specialising in cold climate Australian native orchids, the Mogo Orchid & Fern Nursery has everything for the orchid lover and more.

Housed in a large greenhouse are plants of varying ages, from 1 year old plants in 50mm tube pots to a display plant which is between 35 and 40 years old.

There is also has a large range of orchids mounted on tree-fern backs and cork, and different varieties of locally grown ferns. Always popular, Mogo Orchid & Fern Nursery has orchids that flower throughout the year, and new stock arrives on a weekly basis.

Orchids make a fantastic gift as they beat cut flowers hands down; an orchid flower can last for several months, not several days!

The Nursery stocks potting mixture and accessories for the orchid lover, locally made outdoor furniture, native animals houses, designer pots and wall décor.

The undercover display area has wheelchair access and there’s plenty of car parking available. Open 7 days.

The township of Moruya has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore.

It’s famous for supplying the granite for the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

These days however, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.
