Thanks for coming to spend time on the beautiful Far South Coast - it's a special place to be no matter what time of the year you're here.

It might be cold but there are plenty of things going on this July.

The Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award is still on at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery and it's worth taking the time to visit this exhibition. I went last week and was amazed. This celebration of realistic portraiture attracts many of Australia’s most significant portrait painters, and it's a real treat for locals to be able to appreciate such wonderful artworks without having to travel to a capital city.

On July 15th, the Bay Theatre Players are presenting Season's Greetings, a play about your average family Christmas with an extramarital relationship, turkey dinners and a couple of stray gunshots in the hall. Season's Greetings, written by

contemporary comedy playwright Alan Ayckbourn is sure to put a smile on your face! Details are on page 31.

If you'd like to step back in time, head to the Kameruka Bush Dance on Saturday July 7th at the Kameruka Hall. It's a great night out for the family, with wonderful music provided by the Kameruka Bush Orchestra. Bush dancing is also a fantastically fun way to burn off extra winter calories!

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

Eden’s Simply Succulents


Part I of the exhibition reproduces images associated with working and school life of the district and include images associated with the workings of the bustling port of Eden. Part II (on show from 8 October) captures life in the main street of Eden - a time where cars and horses use the same untarred roads. Without television, celebrations and sports were a way to pass time, and Hall captured many of them, from dignitary receptions at the Hotel Australasia to sporting matches and milestones associated with sports such as tennis and football. The large and heavy dresses and hats that ladies once wore to play sport are a stark contrast to the tight body hugging uniforms of today.Hall’s passion for photography has provided a lasting and important legacy for Eden and the district, and because of the generosity of his family, today’s viewers are able to be a part of the life that was during the early to mid 20th century.

William Hall's passion for photography has produced one of the best pictorial legacies of the region. Reflections takes a selective look at the working and recreational life of the region in the early part of the 20th century. William Thomas Hall was born in Bega in 1880. He grew up in Tanja, then moved to Rocky Hall with his new wife, finally settling in Eden, where his seven children were born.Hall’s occupations included farmer, newspaper correspondent, auctioneer and agent, and at one time conducted a coach mail and passenger service between Eden and Towamba and the

His favourite pastime however was photography. From shipwrecks and whale chases to local school events, Hall’s collection of photographs document the lives of the district’s residents of the first half of the 20th century.For this exhibition, analogue and digital technologies merge. Digital technology has enabled Hall’s photographs to be reproduced larger than actual size, allowing viewers to wonder at the minute details that analogue photography captured close to a century ago. Costume, facial expressions, tools and all other such details of life caught at the time in a single photograph are now larger than life and more easily examined. Viewers have the chance to be drawn into the image as if they were standing alongside the photographer.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Bushwalking in National ParksSpend an hour, a day or more walking in the National Parks and reserves of the Region. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. Ask at a NPWS office or local tourist information centre about others.Please note that for all these walks, strong footwear should be worn, carry food and water, and take clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

1. The Big Hole/Marble Arch Deua National Park 4km return Approx. 1.5 hours Big Hole 13km return Approx. 5.5 hours Marble ArchThe north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon.Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

2. Cascades Walk Wadbilliga National Park 3km return Approx. 2 hours

This easy walk begins from the Cascades Camping Area off Badja Forest Road near Countegany, east of Cooma. Follow the track through granite outcrops and forest rich with arboreal mammals to a viewing platform overlooking Tuross Falls and the spectacular gorge.

3. Kangarutha Walking Track Bournda National Park 9km one way Approx. 5 hoursStart this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, Allocasuarina paludosa, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

4. Light to Light Walk Ben Boyd National Park 31km one way Approx. 3 days

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Camping is available along the way or stay in comfort in the renovated Green Cape Lightkeepers Cottages. Park use fees apply.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, experiencing family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.

For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; with everything from local performers to international acts.

Towamba School turns 150 years oldHistoric Towamba School lies nestled in the heart of the beautiful Towamba Valley, 30 km inland from the coastal town of Eden. On August 4th it celebrates its 150th anniversary, making it one of NSW's oldest schools.The school opened its doors in 1862 with 43 enrolments, a number which has fluctuated over the years in conjunction with external factors. Droughts, floods and the rise and decline of local industry affected student attendance in the early years of the school. Today 29 students attend the school and it continues to provide an invaluable service to the local community.The school has retained many of its original features and these can be viewed on the day along with historical and present day educational displays (from chalk boards to interactive white boards!), old-fashioned memorabilia, and school photos, which will appeal to old and young alike. The official opening will commence at 11.00 with a 'Welcome to Country' ceremony accompanied by local Aboriginal dancers, followed by the Towamba School Choir. Entertainment throughout the day will include bush-craft displays, merry musicians, dancers, children's games, and market stalls selling locally- produced goods.Hearty, home-cooked fare will also be available to further guarantee visitors a memorable experience. Australia has voted; Club Sapphire Merimbula has been deemed the best registered club in the nation at an industry gala night held in Sydney and attended by Premier Barry O’Farrell.The local club was crowned The People’s Choice Award winner at the annual ClubsNSW 2012 Awards for Excellence at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.Club Sapphire Merimbula received the most votes in the competition run by ClubsNSW where members of the public voted for the best club throughout April.More than 14,000 votes were lodged by mail and online. Approximately 37 per cent (5,240) came via online and the remaining 63 percent (9,247) came via printed entry.Club Sapphire Merimbula will receive a $10,000 cash prize, with the club and a charity of their choice sharing the prize money. Speaking to the Merimbula News Weekly, Club CEO Damien Foley said "It is an honour for the Club to win this award and we thank all those members and patrons who voted for Club Sapphire Merimbula. To win this award is particularly pleasing because it gives due recognition to the great team of staff who really are the heart and soul of Club Sapphire."

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.

A safe swimming beach patrolled by Tathra Surf Life Saving Club may also provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are

frequently seen from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for

swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants.

In 1880 Canadian Henry Williams discovered alluvial gold in shingle on the beach seven kilometres north of Bermagui. The Montreal Gold Rush was on, and within 3 weeks, 2000 miners were on the field. Today the Montreal Goldfield is a virtually intact remnant of this gold rush of the early 1880s, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea.A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of

mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop.

Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just two kilometers down the road from Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, (Pam's Store) and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

Fresh fruit - what other choice is thereHere we are, well and truly into Winter and there is so much to do during this time of the year, it's hard to decide where to start.Winter is the perfect time to select and plant open or bare rooted plants that are generally only available at this time of the year. Most nurseries will have a good selection of fruit or ornamental trees or vegetable garden plants like Asparagus, Strawberries, Jerusalem Artichokes and Rhubarb to name a few.Many of these plants are also available throughout other times of the year in pots or containers, but will probably cost more, due to potting and transport costs (potted plants take up more space in trucks than open rooted ones).When making your selection of plant it's most important to take particular notice of the bark of the plant, the condition of the roots (not dry) or the firmness of the bulb or corm. If the stem or roots appear to be dry or shrivelled then the plant has been allowed to dry out, which could spell disaster for the plant's ability to recover after planting. Plants that have been stored in larger indoor shops generally have been starved of light and moisture for some time, and it is advisable to check the roots for drying out before making your purchase.It is very important to keep the roots covered by some means on your trip

home so they cannot dry out. If your planting hole is not ready at home then temporarily “heal” the plants in with some soil to cover the roots. The planting process involves a number of important factors to ensure optimum growing conditions for your selected plant. Probably the most important factor is sunlight. Unless the plant you have selected has a requirement for shade, then you must select a site that has plenty of light to enable the plant to successfully function. Fruiting plants need good sunlight to produce good sweet fruit; if they suffer from too much shade, then they will produce smaller, less-tasty fruit and a smaller crop.Another important factor is soil preparation. Dig wide holes sufficient to allow the roots to be spaced evenly

across the hole and slightly deeper than the depth of the “stain” on the trunk (where the plant has been buried to prior to being dug up for sale). Mix some manure into your soil to improve the texture and structure of the soil that surrounds the roots. Place this around the roots of the new plant and slightly tamper down. Stake for a short time if necessary and water in. Fertiliser should not be applied now but early in spring, when the plant starts to shoot.Talk to your local nurseryman to expand on these details, as space here doesn't permit me elaborate further.

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.
