Winter may be here, but the cooler weather is no reason to stay indoors or miss out on enjoying the South Coast.

The whale migration season is underway, with plenty of easily accessible vantage points available on the South Coast to catch a glimpse of these impressive creatures.

There are also plenty of opportunities for winter camping and other outdoor activities in Booderee National Park and beyond. Read about them on pages 14 and 27.

When it comes to keeping the kids occupied these school holidays, the South Coast offers plenty of options. Page 11 has a host of school holiday activity suggestions. Two events not to be missed are the 57th Annual Family Fishing Carnival in Sussex Inlet from 6-11 July and Erth @ the Fly from 5-7 July. See pages 3 and 4 for the details.

As the plot runs, a divorced slob invites a group of the boys over for cards. One of the guests, who happens to be very meticulous and tense, has just been separated from his wife. The slob and the neat-freak decide to share one apartment; but patterns of their own disastrous marriages begin to reappear with hilarious results.

Gerroa Gerroa is the closest town to Seven Mile Beach National Park, a grand and inspiring sweep of sand with an extensive dune system and a wealth of bird and mammal life.

Gerroa developed as a holiday town, although Seven Mile Beach had been used for horse racing as early as the 1860s. In 1933, aviator Charles Kingsford-Smith used this beach as the runway for his pioneering flight across the Tasman to New Zealand.

This month the South Coast iMag caught up with the newly appointed Head Chef at Berry’s Pavilion Restaurant, Chef Ran Kimelfeld.

Since taking over the restaurant, Israeli-born Chef Ran has been revolutionising the menu and wine list to focus on fresh local ingredients and local wines.

Who taught you to cook? The first chefs I worked for in Israel in a professional kitchen, but I learned from my mother the logic behind cooking.

What inspired you to become a chef? I’ve always loved cooking and had a passion for food. I can’t imagine doing anything else. We always had healthy fresh food around at home and made most things from scratch.

Do you have a philosophy on food? I love doing food that makes people happy. I believe in simplicity and keeping it fresh with high quality ingredients.

What are three things in your kitchen you can’t live without? 1. Good quality knives. 2. Pasta machine. I do lots of fresh pasta dishes, such as our Tortellini stuffed with mushrooms from Gerringong. 3. Really good olive oil. I use lots of Extra Virgin Olive Oil from

Kangaroo Valley.

What was your most memorable meal? I will always remember the food I ate while diving in Thailand. It was a simple Thai mango salad that tasted so good and a pork noodle soup that was just done so well.

What is your typical breakfast? I usually don’t get time for breakfast – I’m too busy doing breakfast for other people. When I do have time it’s a Meditteraean breakfast with bread, fetta cheese, olives, lots of fresh veggies and olive oil.

What are you most proud of about the Pavilion Restaurant? The environment that the restaurant creates. People feel very at home. I think this is influenced by the space, friendly service, and the food. It reminds me of a small French bistro.

What is your favourite dish from your current menu? Lamb rump served with mint salsa verde and crispy zucchini flowers. It’s a really simple dish, based on a very high quality meat and a salsa made fresh before each service. This dish embodies my philosophy about food.

For the past twenty five years contemporary Australian artist Anna Glynn has been living in the Shoalhaven and quietly observing and gathering stories - both her own and those from the community. In her Shoalhaven Stories exhibition she expresses this rich collection of unusual and everyday events through painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, writing, music, sound, installation, film and animation.

The exhibition includes her archetypal painting the ‘Brave Hunter’ which was chosen as the iconic Australian image for the cover of the ‘Concise History Australia’ by Cambridge University Press.

The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”.From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills.Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities.In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust.An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across

the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago.Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks criss-cross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Kangaroo Valley Pottery located in the main street is a great place to pick up some local pottery and landscape artworks.

Art and Soul of Kangaroo Valley Art and Soul of Kangaroo Valley, a stunning showpiece publication covering the myriad of activities in Australia’s most beautiful valley, is to be launched on June 30 in the Valley Hall by Peter Thompson of ABC’s Talking Heads.

The idea for this book had been bubbling around for a couple of years, when Carl Leddy and partner Larraine Hahlos were spurred into action by the release of a similar book about food producers in the Shoalhaven, which covered only four Kangaroo Valley providores. They knew the Valley was a more productive and virile community than that.

So this project has created a book that includes all of the elements that make Kangaroo Valley so special. Art and Soul covers the farmers, growers and processors as well as those brightening the lives of others through the arts, music and other creative pursuits, including the Valley’s events and festivals.

The regional centre of Nowra, situated on the beautiful Shoalhaven River, is a bustling town which contrasts the pleasant laid back lifestyle enjoyed by locals. The broad Shoalhaven River offers many recreational possibilities such as fishing, boating and river cruises. Nowra is also a base for local adventure tour operators and options include canoe trips and skydiving.

Nowra has a number of historic buildings and houses dating from the Victorian era. Heritage walks and other information can be picked up from the local Visitors Centre.

One of the cultural delights of Nowra is nearby Bundanon, the rural property of the late Arthur Boyd which he gave to the nation to be used as a retreat for artists. Along with the district's many wonderful natural attractions, Nowra itself provides an extensive selection of

The Fleet Air Arm Museum celebrates links with the aviation industry with a display of military - it is well worth a visit. You can also explore Meroogal a historic timber gothic-style house with one of the most authentic 19th century interiors in NSW.

Terara Original historic town with buildings dating back to 1850’s. The area is a prime agricultural region with great fresh local produce available from some farms. Use Millbank Road for a pituresque drive to Pyree and destinations closer to the beach.

Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson,

where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Vincentia and Hyams Beach.

The bay’s beaches are impressive - a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state.

At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a pristine coastal wilderness.

Huskisson is home to the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops.

Sussex Inlet & WandandianSussex InletSituated 35km south of Nowra and 13km off the Princes' Highway, Sussex Inlet is a popular spot for water sports, being on the small river which connects St Georges Basin with the ocean. There is a population of some 4,000 permanent residents in Sussex Inlet and adjoining areas of Berrara, Cudmirrah and Swanhaven. A feature of the town is the housing develop-ment situated on a tidal canal system. The canal system has in fact caused the business area of Sussex Inlet to now be located on an island - It is known as the "Island Township". Activities include lawn bowling, fishing, sailing, golf, bingo, water skiing and swimming in sheltered waters. There are several boat hire businesses with small motor boats for hire.There are a large variety of wild birds in the area and kangaroos can be seen

Lemon Yoghurt Syrup CakeLemon Yoghurt Syrup CakeCitrus season is upon us so what better way to use up lemons than with this delicious afternoon tea cake. Two limes can be substituted for the lemon.

125g Softened Butter 200g Caster Sugar 3 Eggs Zest of 1 Lemon 200g SR Flour 200g Plain Yogurt (preferable thick Greek style)Syrup 1/3 cup water 150g sugar Juice of 1 Lemon

Heat oven to 180 degrees

Cream Butter and sugar, beat in eggs one at a time, fold in lemon zest, flour and yogurt.

Pour into a loose bottomed cake pan lined with baking paper. Bake for 30-40 mins until cooked.

Heat water, sugar and lemon juice and boil for 2 -3 mins until thickened.

Remove cake from oven and make holes all over the cake with a skewer – brush on lemon syrup.

Leave to cool in the pan. Decorate with lemon slices.

Lake Tabourie - CullendullaBawley Point - East Lynne - Termeil - Durras - Kioloa

Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men.

Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife.

Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and

picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest.While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.

Murramarang National ParkMurramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.

This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.

Cullendulla Creek Nature ReserveThe reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.
