Lots of celebrations are happening this September as Tathra Wharf has a party for its 150th birthday. Held on September 30th, there's a fantastic day planned at the site of Australia's only National Trust classified coastal steamer wharf. You'll find details of the party on page 19.

Spiral Gallery is also celebrating Tathra Wharf's 150th birthday with the Wharf Tales Open Art Prize. Entries will be displayed at Spiral from 14th September until 6th October, with the winner announced at the exhibition opening on 24th September. More details are on page 15.

Another gallery is celebrating a milestone - Australian Pottery at Bemboka is launching its fourth season with a new exhibition and a River Music Fair. Information about the day can be found on page 19.

Spectrum Theatre Company is performing a new piece by local theatre legend Paul Dion. 'Daredevils' is about the trials and tribulations of a teenager trying to complete his bucket list before his heart gives out. See page 13 for dates and prices.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

Part I of the exhibition reproduces images associated with working and school life of the district and include images associated with the workings of the bustling port of Eden. Part II (on show from 8 October) captures life in the main street of Eden - a time where cars and horses use the same untarred roads. Without television, celebrations and sports were a way to pass time, and Hall captured many of them, from dignitary receptions at the Hotel Australasia to sporting matches and milestones associated with sports such as tennis and football. The large and heavy dresses and hats that ladies once wore to play sport are a stark contrast to the tight body hugging uniforms of today.Hall’s passion for photography has provided a lasting and important legacy for Eden and the district, and because of the generosity of his family, today’s viewers are able to be a part of the life that was during the early to mid 20th century.

William Hall's passion for photography has produced one of the best pictorial legacies of the region. Reflections takes a selective look at the working and recreational life of the region in the early part of the 20th century. William Thomas Hall was born in Bega in 1880. He grew up in Tanja, then moved to Rocky Hall with his new wife, finally settling in Eden, where his seven children were born.Hall’s occupations included farmer, newspaper correspondent, auctioneer and agent, and at one time conducted a coach mail and passenger service between Eden and Towamba and the

Secretary of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows and the Eden Exhibition Society, he and his family were regularly involved in community activities and celebrations – more often than not he was also master of ceremonies. His favourite pastime however was photography. From shipwrecks and whale chases to local school events, Hall’s collection of photographs document the lives of the district’s residents of the first half of the 20th century.For this exhibition, analogue and digital technologies merge. Digital technology has enabled Hall’s photographs to be reproduced larger than actual size, allowing viewers to wonder at the minute details that analogue photography captured close to a century ago. Costume, facial expressions, tools and all other such details of life caught at the time in a single photograph are now larger than life and more easily examined. Viewers have the chance to be drawn into the image as if they were standing alongside the photographer.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.

For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.

Whales migrate past Merimbula from September - November, pausing to feed and frolic in the Bay, making Merimbula a great place for whale watching.

based on a book by Bill Condon. Teenager ‘Thorns’, (Anthony Thorne) reveals to his new friend, Jack, that he has a heart problem, but he’s “cool with it” because he has a list – a bucket list. It’s a list of crazy things to do before he ‘carks’ it. And he wants Jack’s help.There are very funny moments when Thorns reveals what he has already achieved. Parents, teachers, friends and

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale migrating south from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-

biking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at

Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants.

From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve.

This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy black-

cockatoos, listed as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees.

The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds,

frogs and water dragons.

Continue through the Reserve until you reach Dilkerra Rd; follow this until you reach the famous Tathra beach, winner of the 2008 NSW Clean Beach Award.

The walk takes about 45 minutes one way, and is graded as easy - medium.

Tathra Wharf Celebrates 150 YearsTathra Wharf sits like a pink gem in Tathra Bay on the Far South Coast. Classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, the Wharf was built in 1862. Tathra is planning a big celebration for the long weekend in October to commemorate its 150 years and look back on the role it played in the growth and development of the Bega Valley.Everyone is invited to the party as Tathra winds back the clock 150 years.Held on Sunday September 30th, there will be stories and games from the early days, street theatre, stall holders,

local produce, buskers, hay stacking, children's games, rowing boats and vintage cars and drays.The fabulous Pig and Whistle Wharf Museum will once again be open to the public and is full of information about Tathra's unique wharf – the Grand Old Dame of the Sea. You can also enjoy the delicious local produce that the Wharf Locavore has to offer. There's are fantastic panoramic views from the Wharf, and depending on the time of day, you can see the mist lifting off the sea, the birds diving for a meal, the sun rising or setting – it's a

On Saturday the 22nd September, the Cobargo Farm is having an Open Garden Day & Spring Equinox Celebration, running from dawn till dusk. Montreal Goldfield at Bermagui

Montreal Goldfield is once again holding a Heritage Day this year on Saturday October 6th, and with demonstrations of old-world crafts, displays, music and activities, it will be a wonderful day out for all the family.Entry is $5 per person and includes Billy Tea and Damper as well as a tour of the Goldfield. Tours start at 9.30am and continue all day until 3pm. This weekend is also the 132nd anniversary of the Bermagui Mystery at the Montreal Goldfield, when in 1880 the complete disappearance of Government Surveyor Lamont Young, his assistant, and three men from Batemans Bay made headline news around the country.After arriving from Sydney on the steamer Truganini, Young and his assistant Max Schneider called on Warden Keightley at the goldfield.Lamont left some of his surveying equipment there and returned to camp on the Bermagui River. They camped beside three men, Towers, Casey and Lloyd, who'd sailed from Batemans Bay.

The boat with five men in it was seen travelling north the next day, but it was later discovered on rocks at Corunna Point with spectacles, books, clothing etc still on board but no sign of the men. Police were dispatched from Sydney to search for the missing men but did not find any trace of them. The fate of these men is still unknown and their bodies never found.Corunna Point is now known as Mystery Bay. Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of

mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop.

Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just two kilometers down the road from Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, (Pam's Store) and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

Many gardeners at some stage require a plant to provide a screen to a neighbouring property, or a part of their property that might be a bit unsightly, like the compost yard or the utilities area where the bins and other items might be stored.Due to a lack of space, large screening plants might not be the answer, and we are often left wondering how we can approach the situation without outlaying a lot of dollars to overcome the problem.The answer is to use a climbing plant. The appealing thing in using a climber is that there is a different climber that will flower just about every month of the year. To add some interest to the screen, the use of a spring flowering form and maybe another to flower in autumn will extend the visual impact for a much longer period throughout the year. It is also advisable that two plants with similar growing habits are be used. By using a massively vigorous plant with a

slower growing plant, at some stage the slower grower plant will be swamped and will fail.Prior to selecting a climber, the most important consideration to be made is to what material the support should be made of. Considering that the feature is going to be long term, the most appropriate material to be used would be metal. Metal uprights with a concrete mesh or heavy gauge chicken mesh is the easiest form of construction, and although it might look a bit unsightly in the initial stages, the climber will soon cover the mesh and all will be concealed.In selecting the plant material to be used, thought should be given to the location of the screen, whether sun or shade, frost or no frost, height of screen, evergreen or deciduous.Plants suitable for shade include Chinese star Jasmine, Creeping fig and Pandorea . Those for a sunny location include Carolina Jasmine, Clematis,

Sollya, Hardenbergia and Lonicera.Deciduous climbers, although not providing a total screen, work really well in the non-dormant months and include Wisteria, Boston Ivy and Ornamental Grape.These are but a very small selection of climbers out there that are suited to this particular form of landscaping, and a visit to your local nurseryman will give you many more ideas as to what can be used.Many sites that require screening are adjacent to hard stand areas like concrete, and it can be difficult to actually plant your climber. Most climbers do very well in a large pot, and as long as a premium potting mix is used and regular fertilising takes place, there is no reason for not adopting this form of screening in any area.

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.

After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.

Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.Mogo Zoo also won their category at the 2011 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards; they won the award for the best Tourist Attraction.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past two hundred years.

The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia.

Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.

Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is

deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations.

Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.

There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance.

Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance.

The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering

local seafood on the menu.

Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee.
