ABSTRACT In the present energy scenario the fossil fuel sources are fast depleting and their combustion products are causing global environmental problems. So it is inevitable to shift towards the use of renewable energy resources which in turn will reduce pollution and saves fossil fuels. Air Powered Engine is an alternative technology which uses compressed air to run the engine and thus eliminates the use of fossil fuels. Exhaust temperature of it will be slightly less than atmospheric temperature (i.e. 20-25°C) and thus helps in controlling global warming and reducing temperature rise caused due to other means. As we are going to convert the already existing conventional engine into an air powered one, this new technology is easy to adapt. Another benefit is that it uses air as fuel which is available abundantly in atmosphere. Today fossil fuels are widely used as a source of energy in various different fields like power plants, internal & external combustion engines, as heat source in manufacturing industries, etc. But its stock is very limited and due to this tremendous use, fossil fuels are depleting at faster rate. So, in this world of energy crisis, it is inevitable to develop alternative technologies to use renewable energy sources, so that fossil fuels can be conserved. One of the major fields in which fossil fuels are used is Internal Combustion Engine. An alternative of IC Engine is “AIR POWERED ENGINE”. It is an engine which will use compressed air to run the engine. It is cheap as it uses air as fuel, which is available abundantly in atmosphere. For this project we required some basic information related to our project for this purpose we make this project report. So we are going to make AIR POWERED ENGINE. reducing temperature rise caused due to other means. As we are going to convert the already

PROPERTIES OF COMPRESSED AIR

Compressed air is efficient, clean as well as safe in terms of inflammable property. It is not

combustible and non-polluting. As per thermodynamic laws, air of atmospheric pressure can

be mechanically compressed by compressor the transformation of pressure of air is at 1 bar

up to 414 bar. According to boil’s law, volume decrease during compression then pressure

increase. As per Charles’s law volume is directly proportion to temperature. As conclusion of

these laws; pressure, temperature and volume are in proportionality relation, changes of one,

and makes other change.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Prof. B. S. Patel have been tried to develop a compressed air powered engine by modifying

single cylinder four stroke engine by replacing spark plug with the pulsed pressure control

valve which can create required pressure. Now valve is controlled by supply of electrical

signal to it, for this purpose they suggested an electronic timing circuit and hence speed of

engine can also controlled by input electrical signal. Compressed air is normally used in

pressure ranges from 1 bar to 414 bar (14 to 6004 PSI) at various flow rates from as little as

0.1 m (3.5 CFM - cubic feet per minute) and up. The laws of physics dictate that uncontained

gases will fill any given space. The easiest way to see this in action is to inflate a balloon.

The elastic skin of the balloon holds the air tightly inside, but the moment you use a pin to

create a hole in the balloon's surface, the air expands outward with so much energy that the

balloon explodes. Compressing a gas into a small space is a way to store energy. When the

gas expands again, that energy is released to do work. That's the basic principle behind what

makes an air cargo. The first air cars will have air compressors built into them. After a brisk

drive, you'll be able to take the car home, put it into the garage and plug in the compressor.

The compressor will use air from around the car to refill the compressed air tank.

Unfortunately, this is a rather slow method of refueling and will probably take up to two

hours for a complete refill.

WORKING

The principle of compressed-air propulsion is to pressurize the storage tank and then connect

it to something very like a reciprocating steam engine of the vehicle. Instead of mixing fuel

with air and burning it in the engine to drive pistons with hot expanding gases, compressed

air vehicles (CAV) use the expansion of compressed air to drive their pistons. Manufacturers

claim to have designed engine that is 90 percent efficient. The air is compressed at pressure

about 150 times the rate the air is pressurized into car tires or bicycle.

The tanks must be designed to safety standards appropriate for a pressure vessel. The storage

tank may be made of steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, Kevlar or other materials, or

combinations of the above. The fiber materials are considerably lighter than metals but

generally more expensive. Metal tanks can withstand a large number of pressure cycles, but

must be checked for corrosion periodically. In the project we used store tank in which air is

stored as some pressure. Which run on the pneumatic cylinder is connected with the crank

shaft runs the engine.

As we all know the present source of transporting vehicle powered like petrol and diesel are

limited stoke and it’s nearly to finish & no more source which take place this source. So we

must require other source of energy which can take place of present energy source. We are

going to design a mechanism which can utilize efficiency of air engine. In present petrol

powered vehicle available in the market but the efficiency of this type of vehicle is less.

We design air powered vehicle and put such arrangement that can utilize air in vehicle. In

that we make such change put air compressor tank. This air stored in compressed air in air

tank. We can utilize it to run the vehicle. By this we can run vehicle by compressed air. So

we can improve the efficiency of vehicle. We called in air powered vehicle. This save the

petrol and also save the harmful effect to the environment.

The air powered car can be possible future scope when petrol and diesel is not available, so

overcome the weakness and problems of the air powered bike solve by developing better

technology. Our eco friendly project gives better comfort for the normal person without the

use of fuel cost. In this we use the oxygen gas to increase the work efficiency of our project.

We also use gear mechanism to take the load maximum. In general it cannot be start only by

air pressure but us reducing the speed ration by gear mechanism so it can be load maximum

load by air and increases torque. It helps in starting motion of cycle and we not required to

give human effort for starting of car. We can start the vehicle by the air pressure.

OBJECTIVES

Another source of energy. Eco-friendly.

Production cost is low compare to today’s conventional engine.

Low maintenance cost, manufacturing cost as well as low operating cost.

Longer life span; Compressed air powered vehicle gives higher efficiency than electric

Vehicles, which is another technology which fulfils the shortage of fuel and environment

friendly.

Very less wear& tear of parts, so smooth working is possible. Air is economical,

inflammable, abundant, easily transportable, storable, and non-polluting. Manufacturing

cost of this engine or vehicle is low.
