English & Urdu Text : Khalid IqbalPresentation : Shoaib Sobani

He was living in anonymity in the Batch of ‘79, though well recognized in his loop offriends. Mumtaz Cheema, Khalid Manzur, Islahuddin, Atiq Nazimabadi, MasoodJeelani, Ghyasuddin, Anas Masood and Saifullah Jogezai were pals with whom hespent time in the class and hostel. He was a freethinking person with no politicalleaning. Meticulously clean shave with a stylish goggle, he looked like a mysterymovie character. Abbasi loved to play table tennis and his play was admired by all andsundry, like Thapa and Gauhar. Graduation followed unfruitful attempts to do a post-graduation in Surgery while in England. From skyscrapers he came down topyramids. He moved to Nigeria.

Today Nigeria is acknowledged as the most corrupt country in the universe.Nigerians cannot officiate as a referee in any international competition because ifthey are allowed, for sure they can sell the match. Contrary to the beliefs Saeed hadmaximum enjoyment, fun and frolic while staying in that country. Recalling the NewYear night in the Lebanon Club, he still “waterbrashes” at the magnificent bellydances display and the seductive aroma of alcohol and kebabs in the air. Life inNigeria had much much more to offer but the morbidity due to tropical diseases wasvery dangerous to irk any sensible person. On facing the devil, Abbasi called it a dayand moved back to the land of the pure.

The flames of jollity and laughter, which originated in West Africa, snuffed out like anevil smothered in the bud. Abbasi got married on return to Pakistan to a pediatricianand joined Al-Khidmat Hospital in Nazimabad. He has been serving this philanthropicorganization since sixteen years and now as the Chief Medical Officer. He has alsoopened up his private practice as a family physician. Is there any change in the beliefsand values while working here? Abbasi now keeps a beard and seems to be morebonded with religious practices. Of the two sons he has, the elder is studyingaccountancy in England and the younger one is interested in fine arts. He is a student ofthe Indus Valley School of Art, in Karachi. Saeed Ahmed Abbasi is a smiling man. Assomebody has wisely said ‘a smiling person looks dazzling, irrespective of the class, colour and credo’. He always pays tribute to one class fellow, Rafique Khanani who hasbeen his mentor, a devoted comrade and guru in all respects.
