Sobani Road in Bombay speaks volumes about the Sobani family, well known inthe elite circles of the city and famous for their community services, business andphilanthropic activities. Sobanis are basically Memons. Besides, this family waspopular for their educational accomplishments. One well-known figure was Dr.Zubaida Sobani, a pupil of the veteran Gynecologist Dr. Shirodkar in Bombay wholater facilitated her higher education in England. She returned to Pakistan andbecame a famous Gynacologist in the civil and military circles of Karachi. Sheenjoyed great respect in society and was aunt / mentor of our today’s personality. The one and only, Mr. Shoaib Sobani. Most of the elders of Sobani migrated toKarachi and lived in their house in Guru Mandir, a elebrated aristocratic locality ofthe olden Karachi.

Shoaib Sobani was born here, got his education at Karachi Grammar School andIntermediate at Adamjee College. A catastrophic event changed everything forShoaib when his father left for his eternal abode. He attempted all ten papers inthe second year and made a successful entry into Dow. The predicament thenwas to sustain the dual burden of medical education and to run the Carpet andJewellery business left by his deceased father. He worked around the clock tocome to terms with the circumstances successfully. While at Dow he wassurrounded by a bunch of like-minded friends, Javed, Najam, Kosar, Zubaida,Swaroj, Jane and Salma Qureshi were all celebs in their own right.

After graduation he joined the Thoracic Surgery Unit at CHK which was a goodplayground to learn general surgical skills along with another Dr. Shoaib who hadmarried the famous singer Munni Begum. Shoaib then proceeded to USA in anattempt to specialize. He was on the brink of settling down when a call from Karachidisrupted everything. Business demand coerced Shoaib to abandon the plans andhe returned to Karachi but only after attaining a Commercial Pilot’s License.

Shoaib’s business suffered a setback when the Karachi Airport Transit Loungecaught fire and three of his stores were reduced to ashes. He then set up aJewellery & Pearl Factory in Hong Kong designing Jewellery for the Saudi Arabianmarket and participated in Exhibitions & Shows being the only Pakistani exhibitoramongst a multitude of Indians. Another call informing him of his mother’s heartattack made him wind up the factory and return to Karachi.

Back here in Karachi it dawned on Shoaib that a whole generation of elderlySobanis has entered the advanced age of dependency and infirmity. Uncles,Paternal aunts, mother needed full time attention. Shoaib took upon himself thistask of looking after the physical ailments and the psychological sustenance. Timepassed slowly and the seven superior Sobanis left for Heaven one after another.

The last of that generation who departed a couple of years ago was Dr. ZulaikhaSobani a physiotherapist who had qualified from USA and had started the FirstSchool of Physiotherapy at JPMC in 1953. To serve them in the hour of need was aunique feat for Shoaib as many of them breathed their last in his affectionate lap.Following the departures there was an absolute void in Shoaib’s life. During thislong period many natural demands of life went into oblivion.

Having resettled back in Karachi Shoaib designed & built several constructionprojects in Defense. However at that point he felt the urge to get re-associated tothe long lost medical profession and thus established Medical Informatics, providing medical transcription and coding services to physicians in the West andhas been in the business now for over ten years.

Shoaib has an enthralling personality, absolutely unruffled and bubbling withreadiness. He is gifted with the faculty to read the psyche of the other person withperfection. He is full of hospitality, never nurtures grudges or misgivings, anadvocate who bonds people. He can be rightly called an ambassador at-large of thebatch of ‘79. When one visits his house the ambience is very different. Thefragrances of continental cuisines, archaic classic furniture, historical pictures andtraditions are seen to radiate from the walls and pillars of the building.

Shoaib is a frequent traveler. Apart from a recession of hairline and a little weightgain he has not changed. He has now chipped in many projects of public welfare. The biggest complement for Shoaib is the blind faith and respect that he enjoys inthe hearts of the batch mates of ‘79. The glorious Quran says in Aal-Imran chapterno.3 verse no.134 “those who spend in ease and adversity, those who control theirwrath and are forgiving towards mankind; Allah loved the good.” Shoaib is a veryfortunate man that he has been endowed with all these attributes.۔

PERSONALITY OF SHOAIB SOBANI

A person is born either at home or in hospital but this young man was unique fromthe very beginning. He was born in the dark executive room of PMA House. Yes PMAHouse and it is not a joke. Current PMA House use to be a maternity Hospital in 50’s.

By all standards hebelonged to a very affluentand educated family. Hestudied at Karachi GrammarSchool and was involved inall kinds of extracurricularactivities at the time ofstarting his Intermediateeducation at AdamjeeScience College. His heartwas not into medicine atthat stage however, likemany other he succumbedto his parents wishes.

DEC 3, 1979. CIGARETTE ASHTRAYS WERE THE STYLE.

Believe it or not, at that time he could rattle off portions of the Diwan-e-Ghalibextempore. He had achieved the top honors in scouting, being a Quaid-E-Azam Airscout and still was attending to the scout movement, dreaming of one day flying inthe air or alternatively pursuing his other passion, architecture.

At the same time he suffered the greatest loss, the untimely death of his father. Littledid he know that this would mean his assuming a role that no one but him, in thefamily, could fulfill; that of being a leader for employees of the family businessenterprise as well as becoming the central leading man for the devastated family andif it was not for the fact that exams where delayed due to turmoil in Karachi heprobably would not have joined our class of 79.

AS THE SUN GOES DOWN THE BOYS GO TO TOWN. Shoaib with thebest car in town – Waist size 29?? -- Najum in the passenger seat inShalwar Kameez. The rear window probably sports a Playboy Logo.

SHOAIB -- STYLE EVOLUTION

His mind was always set to be a businessman and entrepreneur. During his medicaldays he had a family carpet outlet at Pearl Continental hotel and three shops atthe Karachi Airport. He got attracted to jewellery business hence one of the shopat the Airport was jewellery outlet. As his empire expanded an office in Hong Kongand a factory to develop Pearls was stablished. He had qualified from Dow withgood marks in every annual examination still managed to concentrate in familybusiness.

His talent knew nobounds. He becameinterested in constructionas a consequence learntarchitectural andstructural drawing. Hebuilt two large houses inDefence housing society. He called them whitehouses and frontage hadcolumns and pillars similarto Greek parthenon.

SWARAJ, SALMA, SHOAIB, ALI, KOSAR

Before MBBS finals drew, Shoaib had already travelled a lot and at the same timestabilized the family’s fortune and emotional health. Shoaib had set foot inIstanbul long before anyone in Dow79 could even dream of visiting Istanbul. Heundertook a road car trip, driving from Karachi, via Iran, Turkey and throughEurope, ending his journey in London, way back before the rest of us had evenstarted our dissection hall socialization. The early 1980’s saw him earning a deepsea diving certificate and he also learnt to fly, fulfilling a yearning from youth; heearned himself a small airplane pilot’s license from USA. It was for passion andnot for any other motives. Thankfully, he returned to Pakistan and eventuallysetup a medical transcription business.

ALWAYS AWAY FROM THE LIMELIGHT. HE DOESNOT MIND BEING IN SHADOW OF HIS FRIENDS

He is an incredibly loyal person. So much so that he remained loyal to love of hislife and never married. His closest friends were Kosar, Najam, Javed, Jane, Caroland co. He was a heart throb, very immaculately dressed and always more thanpresentable.

If you only had one meeting with thisman in your life and he told you theinitials to his name were SS, youwould come to the conclusion thatSS stood for SUAVE andSOPHISTICATED. But then you wouldhave been guilty of digging only theepidermis of this eternally charmingman, and would have ignored thedepth of his character. If you methim a few more times, you could nothelp yourself but notice his humilityand simplicity, his Milansari and aman who would go the extra mile foryou. His mannerism exudedpoliteness. So much so that he is anenvy of his friends.. HEREGULARLYENTERTAINEDINHISHOUSE

While he kept travelling and gaining life experiences, helping numerous familyand friends achieve their life’s goals, he found himself getting more and morelonely. His close associates, took off for faraway lands, be it be the Middle East,England. USA or Canada, he remained grounded in Karachi. Little did he knowthat 25 years later he would end up dead smack in the center of Dow79. In camethe Silver Jubilee celebration of 2004; Shoaib found himself amongst theorganizers and the central hub for information exchange. He grabbed this role byits helm and to this day remains crucial to this social club; publishing the POWreports being just one of the activities besides morally and physically assistingShershah and Ifti in their projects and taking long walks in the park with Idrees.

He is a devout Muslim. He prays and fasts regularly. He is a rare breed like hisfriends in PMA i.e. Najam and Idrees whereby religious belief is translated intotolerance, accommodation and humanism. His charity work is phenomenal but itis done so quietly that even he does not know at times that it has been done.

He has actively contributed to all the projects undertaken by classmates andPMA. His contribution to flood relief was tireless. Friends witnessed his tirelesswork first hand in Sukkhar, Khairpur and Shikarpur.

BESIDE EVERY THING ELSE HE REMAINS A NO NON SENSE PERSON.

Wow, Shoaib, not one but 2 write ups. Knowing how humble Shoaib is, he is probably trying to hide his embarrassment. Shoaib, dow79 is indebted to having a man of such talents stationed in Karachi. I can't even begin to tell you how much of an influence you have been to my own approach to life, besides we have had riotous times while evolving. You were considered a fifth son by my parents (beside the 4 biological ones they had). Who knows how many other parents have considerred you their son as well, some may have actually wanted you as a son in law, but that is a different subject. The Sobani family history is more interesting than that. I cannot do justice to it and would ask Shoaib to relate it. It is neatly interwoven in the Indo Pak history. Just to whet your curiosity . Shoaib's uncle referred by Aly was involved in the famous Indian Navymutiny officianados of history would recollect. I was completely taken aback by the photographs in Shoaib's family collection eg, one had. Rehman Khan's father with Jinnah in a group photo. It would be wonderful to see them all . I have deliberately desisted from adding my comments to POW 100 as Shoaib might be getting big headed from avalanche of adulations he has recieved , all rightly deserved I might add.Asif

Hi Folks,I am indeed greatly overwhelmed by what you all have written and it seems so ironic that you are writing about a guy who for nearly twenty five years after graduation remained in a shell under an extreme complex not having practiced medicine despite having had the opportunity of sitting in the same class as the Great Personalities of the Batch of ’79 and the Crème of the medical field today. If you have read the profile you will have noticed that throughout my life I have made every effort to give you all a living example of ‘Jack’. You know who I’m talking about? ‘The Jack Of All Trades And Master Of None’, and Arshad has confirmed that as a CT by putting a photograph in the profile of himself and me in front of ‘The House That Jack Built’. I do however have to thank friends like Shershah, Naheed, Idrees, Najum, Javaid, Ifti, Arshad and countless other class fellows for pulling me back into the fold and making me feel that they would accept me the way I was, irrespective of how unaccomplished and thus I re-entered the Batch of ’79 and all of its activities.

In 1974 a little before our first Professional exams were scheduled my neighbour who was from the UK and in charge of the British Council Libraries in Pakistan decide to drive to England and his wife refused to undertake this 7000 mile drive with him, so he coaxed me to come along. This was one of the most interesting and educational trips I could ever have undertaken. We drove through the then beautiful Afghanistan, Shah’s progressive Iran, extremely Pakistan friendly Turkey, Yugoslavia that doesn’t even exist any more and through the rest of Europe and through the Alps right up to Edinburgh crossing over to Dover from Ostend in Belgium. I returned in time for the exams that were delayed due to Urdu Riots. With my mind still on the road I cleared only the Physiology and had to sit a few months later for the Anatomy Supplementary.

Even though becoming the ‘Jack’ that I am; was more a result of circumstance rather than of choice, I am not sure if it sprang from what I had learnt from Swaraj of Hindu Mythology, that one has a second ‘Janum’ and maybe a Seventh one too. However, being a Musalman I have no such luck and had to do whatever I wanted to this time around and therefore kept jumping from profession to profession. It was funny when the fellow from GEO TV called me to a career counselling program called ‘Career On Line’. They were having an episode for Medical Transcription which went very well. He called me a couple of months later again. Surprised, I asked why they wanted to repeat this profession; Is it so popular and the fellow said that this time they are doing an episode on ‘Career Switching’ and said “you are the biggest ‘Switch’ we have come across” and that went off even better, probably because I had done Transcription for 10 years but profession switching all my life. All I do know is that the way human nature is the ‘Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence’ and I kept saying this to myself so that I don’t grumble irrespective of what I was doing. One thing though is certain that if I happen to come back in another ‘Janum’ I would like to do it exactly the same way again

I thank all you wonderful people for having written so warmly about this ‘Also Ran’ who is way behind in the race and never got a glimpse of the ribbon at the finish line of the track. However, as mentioned in the profile and from what Aly Haider and Asif have written, I am very fortunate to have had elders of my family that I have always looked up to and I am attaching a few photographs which Asif has asked me to share.Gratefully Indebted,‘Also Ran’

Dear ShoaibThankyou for posting the photographs. I wondered what happened to Ishaq Sobani, he cuts a dashing figure in the photograph. I first read about the Indian naval mutiny in Bolitho's book about Jinnah and often wondered about the personalities behind the saga. Would be interesting to know a little bit more detail if you can enlighten.Asif

Hi Shoaib,Good to read about you. You're being extremely humble, as all really great people are.Dontworry about not practising medicine. I know many who didnt (including myself) but who contributed in so many ways to the fields they had chosen. You contribution to this forum is immense.Carry on buddy!Iqbal

During the current week the list serve is inundated with very well deserved sentiments for Shoaib Sobani. The historical issues and the snaps in the rejoinder have bamboozled everybody. In this 'Sobanised" atmosphere I just want to share a piece of information.MrUmar Sobani, uncle of Shoaib was corporally present in the marriage cermony of Quaid-e-Azam to Ruttie. It is said that he was a witness to the nikah on behalf of the bride. Can Shoaib or any of the surviving senior member in the Sobani clan testify. Best regards .Khalid Iqbal

I m surprised to know all you friends have written about our most smart friend and batch mate. I knew Shoaib as a decent class fellow with a soft smile always on his face , didn't have the knowledge about this relationship. As I am heading NICVD for the last many years this relationship was not in my knowledge.Any how Shoaib your humble and soft spoken personality deserve all these compliments.Wishing you very happy and healthy life.Shah Zaman

Dear AlyYou are absolutely correct. Dr Kassim and Jooma were "Hum Zulf". They were married to Khadija bai and HalimaBai (Bai for urdu daans means Begum)- two sisters who were both daughters of Sulaiman(?) Mitha, a very renowed busineeman and philanthropist. I believe he selected them because he saw the future in them, and saw them becoming the top neurologist and cardiologists of the city. ( Did he not own REX cinema also)Dr Kassim, as you have also said was the founder of NICVD. He worked very hard to achieve his dream. He used to be a regular visitor to our house and talked about it. He obtained the huge sum of Rs 25 lacs - 5 lacs each from the 5 prominent Bombay business family, to start of.Rehman

Thank you Shoaib for sharing the pictures and the PDF links, I am slowly going through them. In one of the links you posted has a passage that perhaps reveal the mindset and philosophy that most Indians at that time lived by. If we can inculcate the "Dictate of Indian Philosophy" amongst the masses, the battle will be over." The only Infinite Reality that exists in you and in me and in all, is the self, is soul. The infinite oneness of the soul is the eternal sanction of all morality that you and I are not only brother, that you and I are really one."Thanks for this picture too, I had not seen this one of Mohammad Ali and Shaukat nana at Belgaun, 1924.Bashir

Hello Arshad, What a pleasant surprise ! Thanks Arshad for the wonderful write-up and thanks Ifti for a deserving supplementary for Shoaib. What can I add to that hasn’t already been said about this heartthrob?Shoaib’s gentleness, humbleness and sincerity make him the envy of ’79-boys’ and sweetheart of ’79-girls’. I must stress, that it’s not his magnificent, exquisite pearls that attracts (as, was suggested by someone); in fact, its Shoaib’s charismatic personality that does the trick. Shoaib, it’s beyond the power of my composition to express my love and admiration; I am lucky to have a true and honourable friend like you.Congratulations! I wish you all the best in the world. Parveen
