Shamima belonged to an upright family from Surat, Gujarat. She had herschooling in Karachi. After her Inter-Science from St. Joseph’s College, Karachi shejoined Dow where Humera, Ghaida, Rasheeda, Ghazala Farooqui, Astad, Vakani,Yousuf, Colin and Mahmood were her clinical batch mates.

Shamima was tall and lean built which made her distinguished in the class. Like herother batch mates, Shamima was also very studious and absolutely committed tostudies. Following graduation, Shamima did her house job with Madam Razia Ansariand Prof. Malik Ali Shaikh revealing her challenge-loving outlook in life. She thenjoined the Sindh Government and served in the hospital at New Karachi

A strong liking for anesthesia compelled her for a U- turn to Civil to become adisciple of Teepu Sahib. Wajahat and Mirza Ji were her fellow trainees who vouchfor her excellent learning curve and the great dedication shown by Shamima inthose days. She was pursuing a carrier in anesthesia when the family immigratedto States in1988.

Shamima got married to Abbas, an outstanding engineer from NED. Abbas wasone of those who made it possible for the country to enter the age of SatelliteCommunications. He was a part of the team of engineers who established thecountry’s maiden satellite station at Deh Mandro in Sindh. Later Abbas was sentto USA on an exchange program. Abbas, Shamima and their two daughters landedin Maryland to start anew. Shamima did ECFMG and looked for residency in herfavorite discipline.

Fortunately or unfortunately she could not find any opening in anesthesia. Sheopted for internal medicine, did her boards and is serving in the healthmaintenance program in Maryland till date. Abbas and Shamima have threeextremely accomplished daughters that do them proud. Rameez the eldestwho has done her PhD in Political Science from the Johns Hopkins University inBaltimore now teaches at the School of Security Studies of Johns Hopkins.

Asma graduated in Medicine from the University of Maryland and is now doingher residency in Chicago attached to the Lyola University, Stritch School ofMedicine, while the youngest Batul did her undergrad in Maryland and is nowdoing her Graduation in Urban, Socio-economic Planning and Creative writing atNYU.

Thanks Shoaib for your meticulous weekend chore. Like many on this forum, I am amazed how you find the time and means to present these beautiful and flawless profiles, week after week. I became friends with Shamima when I joined the domain of Anaesthesia. It was Shamimawho enlightened me with ins and outs of the ‘surgical mafia’ and teaching me the art of putting- up with the obnoxious behaviour of some of the most ‘’UTM’’surgeons. We had some great on call nights and amusing time together. Like my other lovely Karachiite friends, Shamima too invited me to the luscious home cooked meals; scrumptious Guajarati Thalis.Shamima congratulations for being POTW and many thanks for being my friend all these years. Love,Parveen

Congratulations Shamima. It was such a pleasure to read about your sojourn from Dow to the USA. It was so nostalgic to see our photograph as a group. We had many interesting times and rotations. You were really a leader of the group "the womens section ". One could not but notice your st. Joseph's College trait of being thoughtful, generous, humble and modern thinking. It was such a pleasure meeting you when you were in Toronto. Congratulations to you and Abbas on raising such a wonderful and successful family.Congratulations and best wishes.Colin Saldanha
