In the eighties and nineties of the last century Mehdi Manji Lab Services were a household name in Karachi and so were the popular figure of Dr.Tajuddin Manji as cardiologist. Nazli of Dow Batch of ‘79 belonged to the same kin. She was a St. Josephian and came with Seema, Shabnam, Shadab, and Khalida carrying the identical traits. Lively, spontaneous, unassuming and a staunch believer in enjoying every moment to the optimum.

Beside studies one of the ideas of coming to Dow was to enjoy “cholay chat “ junk food that was sold at the back yard of Civil Hospital in Open Street. Café De Bacteria’s hot tea and “Maska bun” was a delight during night postings in Obstetrics. Those thoroughly enjoyable times were meant for unending tittle-tattle discussing the nitty-gritty of life. Nazli’s expression of opening wide eyes to show her feelings was only peculiar to her.

She was also fond of staying away from the lectures. Kazmi taught microbiology. Kazmi Sahib often repeated the words “that’s mean”. The moment he uttered these words the comprehension of the sentence broke oddly and very gradually the students begin to drift outside. Nazli and the group were interested in signing the attendance sheet only. With the end of this task there were all justifications to leave the hall. One salutes the nobility of Kazmi Sahib who never minded this regular activity and his minimum requirement to continue the class to the end was corporal presence of just one student.

Time changed for Nazli. Early marriage and arrival of descendants changed priorities in life. She did her house job in medicine and surgery. Nazli’s husband Mr. Aziz Merchant was very devoted that it became his leading resposabity to collect her personally and ensure an early release from duties. One silhouette who shined academically was the younger brother of Nazli called Nasru (Nasrullah Manji of the Dow Batch of 1980). He was brilliant from day one and ultimately rose to the position of Gastroenterologist in the United States.

Close friends enjoyed exceptional status for Nazli that parties continued at her house for many many years. Khousays made by her mother was amazing and a culinary delight for friends to visit her house. About two decades ago the family decided to immigrate to Canada. The sole intention was to educate three daughters. Today the results are well known. Elder daughter is a chartered Accountant and Business Graduate. The middle one is a qualified Hospital Administrator and the youngest is a Medical Graduate in Pediatrics. All three are married, have raised their families and enjoying the true rewards of their toil. Nazli is a Hospital Manager in Toronto and the dreams of Mr. and Mrs. Aziz Merchant have finally come true. Links with the country of origin have weakened as almost everybody from the family has immigrated.

Nazli has been a true friend to everybody. Her strong bond with Seema and Shadab is time tested even today on a moment to moment basis. People of integrity like Nazli do the right thing even when no one else does. Not because they think it will change the world but for the sole reason that they do not want to change themselves.

Munir

Thank you team Shoaib for re-introducing Nazli.

On day one in Dow, myself and Shuja welcomed her to Dow. Her dad came to drop her off, hearing his

daughter being addressed as 'doc sahib' made him smile and visibly proud. I still remember the

expression on his face.

Well done Nazli. Some of our classmates are getting together in Toronto, it would be nice to see you

there. Best regards to you and your nice looking family. Have fun!

Bashir

PERSONALITY UPLOADED ON 05TH FEB 2011

Thank you so much Shoaib, Seema and Khalid for Nazli:

Nazli Masha'Allah is a truly remarkable friend; just as she is a truly remarkable person. Friend of

friends, lively and full of energy, Masha'Allah.

One thing you have missed is that Nazli is extremely intelligent. Not far behind Nasru. If he was

interested in studies, she was interested in life itself. How can that be anything less. We studied for

many exams together and at the end of a session Nazli will always remember, effortlessly, the most

points. There are some who work hard and do well, there are others like Nazli who are gifted. She is a

pleasure to be with, and we have had a remarkable group with many laughs together. Grateful, that

Nazli was with me through all phases of life.

Nazli, has worked hard on her children, even while she was still studying. The results are apparent.

Her youngest is in for Peds. Gastroentrology fellowship. I remember her parents, and especially her

mother a lot. She used to come to our school to pick up Nazli. May she always rest in peace.

With all my duas Nazli and

many, many best wishes,

Shadab
