Arshad Saeed recalls memories about Saadiya who was a group mate at Dow. They hadAmirul Haq Khan, Quresh Kothari, Khalid Rasheed, Shaista Khanum and Zohra Aswat.This was one of the lively and energetic groups of the class of „79. Saadiya wasyouthful, bright, and scholarly and had a gifted memory. She was counted among thefirst ten meritorious students in the professional exams.

Saadiya‟s mother was Prof. Zubaida Aziz, the seasoned Gynaecologist, teacher andPrincipal of Dow at one time. Madam Aziz was a very devoted professional forwhom communal and conventional eastern values were the affirmative features oflife. Saadiya believes that her mother‟s influence on her life had been enormous.While as a student she was seen to assist her in the private clinic.

Graduation was followed by house job and Saadiya had brief stints ofdemonstratorship in Pathology, residency in the Gynaecology Dept of Civil HospitalKarachi. She went to England and served in various positions in the UK. She returnedto Pakistan with an MRCOG in the minimum possible time. She joined the Almamatter as Assistant Professor in 1986. The venue of work shifted to Aga KhanUniversity when she resigned from Sindh Government in 1987.

This stay continued for about a decade when Saadiya joined Karachi Medical andDental College in 1997 as Chairperson, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, at KarachiMedical Dental College affiliated with Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. She served asPrincipal & and Chairperson Academic Council, Karachi Medical & Dental Collegefrom 2002-2005. FRCOG was conferred on her in 1999 and an honorary FCPS in2005. As principal of a public sector medical college she introduced C.O.M.E(Community Oriented Medical Education) the only college of Pakistan where thisprogram was successful.

A unique feat for Saadiya was her appointment as Dean Faculty of Medicine,University of Karachi for a 3 years tenure. Besides looking at the conduct of affiliatedmedical colleges, she supervised the M.S, M.D and PhD programs of the University ofKarachi. She also served on the Board of studies of Research and Board ofInternational Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi. Shehad the privilege of serving as a member of Pakistan Medical and Dental Councilas representative of Karachi University.

In 2006 Saadiya was awarded Overseas Scholarship by the British Society forColposcopy and Cervical Pathology. She visited Cambridge in July 2006 and receivedtraining in Colposcopy with the intention of setting up a Colposcopy and CervicalPathology centre at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi. Her appointment as “AdjunctProfessor” at the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and DrugResearch (PCMD) was a significant milestone.

To date Saadiya has produced 32 publications to her credit which has appeared inJournals of repute. She has been an invited speaker on various academic occasionsfor both National and International Conferences. She was the recipient of theBenazir Bhutto Shaheed Award for “Contribution To Betterment Of Women InSociety” in 2009 in Karachi. She is the Patron of journal, Annals of ASH & KMDC, arecognized academic magazine indexed with WHO Regional Index Medicus.

Saadiya is married and has three children. Her husband is a Masters inTelecommunication Engineering from the University of London, an MBA from IBA.She has always maintained a balance in life by doing a bare minimum privatepractice. Upbringing of children has been a top priority with Saadia. Physically shehas not changed. The signs of age perhaps have never surfaced.
