DRESS CODE

Designers treated us to a palette-

cleansing array of clean lines for fall.

But there’s nothing vanilla about the

floor-grazing frocks at Costume

National or the crisp silhouettes at 3.1 Phillip Lim

and Céline, which steered clear of

the banal and embraced graphic

detailing. So, this season, order up your taste

of minimalism like you would a martini: classic

with a twist.

We admit that we don’t often advocate the less-is-more mantra (maxi is back, then gone, then back again!), but sometimes a classic sweep of jet-black liquid liner is all it takes to shift a messy-haired summer look from Oh, non! to impossibly French. Yes, the Gaulois are still the ultimate masters of never-try-too-hard simplicity. Try Benefit Magic Ink Jet-Black Liquid Eyeliner ($24, at Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart) to channel a Brigitte

Bardot look that is as mod today as it was in And God Created Woman.

THE PARTY’S OVER...Scale back with this

season’s mod minimalism. For Red Bull and Rockstar. As the summer heat hits a fever pitch, we’re no longer craving an energy buzz. Gone are the days of trying to stay wired—not to men-tion staying up all night dancing to strung-out electro jams—we just want to chill out.

THE PARTY’S JUST GETTING STARTED...For “relaxation” drinks. The latest mood to be bottled and sold is mel-low, man. With names like iChill and Be Happy—and the key slowdown ingredi-ent, melatonin—this new wave of beverages is the cool way to unwind on a hot day. Just add Bob Marley tunes.

Sip a relaxing bevvy poolside.

What better way to while away a hot summer afternoon than a rousing game of dom inoes? Okay, so maybe “rousing” is over stating the matter, but this South Beach-ready lacquer set ($138, jonathanadler.com) from cheeky designer Jonathan Adler is reason enough to learn the game.
