they came with some packets, their place was then raided as well where more packets are found containing leaves, stems and seeds weighing 3.62 gram, 1.76 gram, 5.61 gram and 12.76 gram. Black pants were also confiscated from the place.

Denpasar (Bali Post) –Bali Province Transportation Agency have promised

to evaluate routinely including the Trans Sarbagita bus stops being ineffective and hardly used by passengers. For that the bus stops will be taken down and will be moved to a more strategic place according to Head of the Agency, I Made Santha, SE, MSi, stated to Bali Post

Until now around 24 bus stops have been built and ap-proached by 15 Trans Sarbagita busses. There are around 10 permanent bus stops which is marked to be strategic while the other 14 is portable and ineffective meaning can be moved to a more strategic place. “these portable bus stops were done to know how many people would likely

to get the bus from here,” Santha explained.During the socialisation, this operation of route

Batubulan-Nusa Dua will always be evaluated which focussed on the passengers being on the bus stops pro-vided now. Besides that there has been suggestions from the public which could be a consideration in moving the portable bus stops. For example, SMPN 9 Sanur junior high school asked the bus stop to be placed nearby it so the 50 pupils that has been using the service don’t have to walk extra 200 meters to go to their school. “We will quickly coordinate on the technicality in responding the public’s want. Evaluation is completely important for the future of the public transportation in Bali,” Santha added.

Mangupura (Bali Post)—Statement of the Badung Regent, AA Gde Agung, ‘selling out’ the

permit for the provision of central parking lot in Kuta poses a highlystrategic solution in resolving the congestion problem and making theKuta area more comfortable. However, a number of parties still ques-tion about the willingness of capital owners to invest for the purpose. As known, the development of central parking lot would be faced withland constraints and future business prospects.

A legislator of Badung House from Legian, I Wayan Puspa Negara, said on Sunday (Sep 11) that in principle he agreed with the idea asexpressed by the Badung Regent. However, building a central parking

in Kuta was very limited and expensive. For example, Jalan Legianand Jalan Pantai Kuta had been very crowded with commercial build-ings.

Expensive land price would become a special consideration.Anotherreason was that building parking facilities was less attractive to inves-

There were other alternatives to break the deadlock of investors, namely government should dare to purchase a land for a central parkingspace at the price approved by the landowner. Then, it could be resolvedby optimization of the existing space. In this regard, relevant agencieswere asked to streamline the function of central parking lot where itwas currently not optimal as well as to strictly enforce the rules on

Puspa added that congestion and clutter currently happening in Kutaposed a natural process. According to him, Kuta had no developmentgrand design and it was exacerbated by the lack of government’s in-decisiveness in enforcing the licensing rules in particular. “Hence, thedevelopment in Kuta is like uncontrollable,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Kuta Village Community Empower-ment Agency (LPM), Nyoman Graha Wicaksana, supported the gov-ernment’s efforts to open a central parking lot in Kuta. He mentionedthat some lands in Kuta could possibly be conjured up into a centralparking. For example, it was the land in the former location of BaliAnggrek Hotel and other vacant land around Kuta.

Regarding the possibility of central parking realization, GrahaWicaksana even mentioned that investors even waited for the govern-ment’s commitment, particularly regarding the regulations. He did notwant, when the central parking had been provided the regulation evendid not allow the operation. On that account, he requested the issueshould be discussed further with relevant agencies. Denpasar (Bali Post)—Along the year 2011, the rabies had killed 18 people. This amount

indicated a decrease if compared to the cases in 2010 with 80 death tolls. It was revealed by the Head of Bali Health Services, Nyoman Sutedja, when met on Saturday (Sep 10).

Though the death cases declined, he said further, the number of bitesdid not. Cases of dog bites per day in Bali remained high. On average, there were about 150 cases of bites occurring in Bali. In response tothe fact, Sutedja hoped people to be more aware of the rabies-carrier

cases occurred in Bali exceeded 150, where the average of January was164 bite cases per day, February (161), March (167), April (161), May(159) and June (171).

In response to such high bite cases, added Sutedja, people were ex-

Meanwhile, regarding the stock of anti-rabies vaccine, other thanpurchasing by regional budget fund, the Health Services recently receivedan aid of anti-rabies vaccine from the WHO amounting to 20,000 vials.“Our stock in the Health Services numbers 20,000 vials, while recentlyWHO gave us vaccine aid coming to 20,000 vials. Therefore, the totalcome to 40,000 vials,” said Sutedja.

In addition, the vaccine stock was also provided by every regency/city.Therefore, Sutedja hoped the stock in 2011 would not be vacant and everyresident bitten by dog could get the anti-rabies vaccine easily. (san)

Factories dumping waste to the riverTabanan (Bali Post)—

Numerous factories established at riverside were highlighted again by the members of TabananHouse. One of them was a member of Commission II of Tabanan House, Nyoman Wirama Pu-tra. He hoped thepermits issued by regency govern-ment should consider a long-termenvironmental impact. When theenvironment was damaged, peoplewould be the victim of such im-pact. The floods were triggered by tor-rential monsoon rains across Orissa state, causing water levels to rise and overflow river banks, sparking an operation that saw helicopters drop off emergency food packets to help the stranded.

“We are face-to-face with yet another bitter flood that has claimed 18 lives with another six people reported missing,” Orissa’s disas-ter management minister Surya Narayan Patra told AFP.

He said the state government had evacuated tens of thousands of people from their waterlogged homes and was enacting relief mea-sures to help a total of 1.7 million people affected by the floods.

Orissa’s special relief commis-sioner Pradeep Kumar Mohapatra told reporters that access to 877 vil-lages was completely cut off due to rising water levels and that 11,000 houses had been damaged.

“The numbers of people affected

have doubled in just a few weeks and there is more rain to come,” said John Roche, India’s country repre-sentative for the Red Cross. “Thou-sands have lost homes and liveli-hoods, leaving many wage-earners with no choice but to migrate to nearby towns to find work.”

The strength of the annual June-September downpour is vital to hundreds of millions of Indian farmers and to economic growth in Asia’s third-largest economy which gets 80 percent of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season.

Floods in neighbouring Pakistan have killed 138 people in the last month and affected up to five mil-lion more.

NIAMEY, Niger — A convoy carrying ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s son al-Saadi has crossed into neighboring Niger, a spokesman for Niger’s government said Sunday, one of the highest-profile former regime figure to flee to the landlocked African nation.

Al-Saadi, the fugitive ruler’s 37-year-old son, entered Niger in a convoy with nine other people, said Niger Justice Minister Ama-dou Morou. The vehicles were traveling south toward the outpost of Agadez, where other fleeing Libyan loyalists are believed to be holed up in a hotel.

“I wish to announce that one of Gadhafi’s sons — al-Saadi Gadhafi — was intercepted in the north of Niger by a patrol of the Nigerien military,” Morou told

reporters late Sunday. He said al-Saadi “has no status

at all” in Niger, indicating that he has not been granted refugee status, which would guarantees him certain rights. Since last week, several convoys carrying senior of-ficials of the former Libyan regime as well as civilians and soldiers have made their way across the porous desert border into Niger. Among them were several of Gad-hafi’s top military officers, includ-ing his chief of security and the head of his southern command.

Niger has faced increasing scrutiny for allowing the former regime members onto its soil, and al-Saadi’s arrival will likely intensify international pressure on the country to cooperate with Libya’s new rulers. They want all Gadhafi’s sons — and Gadhafi himself, who is on the run — to be turned over for trial.

KABUL, Afghanistan — A powerful Taliban truck bomb that wounded 77 American soldiers and killed five Afghans outside a com-bat outpost served as a reminder on Sunday that 10 years after the Sept. 11 attacks, nearly 100,000 U.S. troops are still fighting a war that shows no signs of slowing down.

No U.S. troops were killed when the massive bomb loaded on a truck filled with firewood exploded Sat-urday night just outside the gates of Combat Outpost Sayed Abad in eastern Wardak province. NATO said a protective barrier at the en-trance absorbed most of the force of the blast, although the area outside the base was hit hard.

Officials said the Afghans killed included a policeman and four ci-vilians, including a 3-year-old girl.

Another 17 Afghans — 14 civil-ians and three policemen — were wounded. The provincial governor said the blast was so powerful it damaged about 100 shops in the nearby Sayed Abad bazaar.

Although Saturday’s truck bombing occurred outside the base, the numbers of injuries it caused was significant. Combat outposts usually house about 200 troops.

The Taliban claimed responsibil-ity for the attack. Earlier, they had issued a statement vowing to fight until all foreign troops leave. The radical Islamic movement, which gave shelter to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida when it ruled Afghani-stan, also stressed that it had no role in the Sept. 11 attacks, and it accused the U.S. of using them as a pretext to invade the country.

“The Afghans have an endless stamina for a long war,” the state-

ment said. “Through a countrywide uprising, the Afghans will send the Americans to the dustbin of history like they sent other empires of the past.” The attack occurred just over 40 miles (70 kilometers), or about an hour’s drive, from Kabul in an increasingly lawless district in a key province that controls a strategic approach to the capital.

Sayed Abad is seven miles (12 kilometers) east of the Tangi Valley, where the Taliban on Aug. 6 shot down a U.S. military helicopter, killing 30 Americans. Many of the dead belonged to the U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team 6 — the same elite unit that killed bin Laden during a May 2 cross-border raid into Pakistan, where al-Qaida’s leadership was driven. It was the deadliest single loss for American forces in the decade-old war.

Temple CeremonyCalendar Event for August 31 through October 5, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. TIMIKA - Rescuers have found the bodies of two pilots, an Aus-tralian and a Slovakian, who were killed when their small plane crashed in Indonesia’s remote province of Papua, police said Monday.

Their Susi Air Cessna Grand Caravan plane, which was carrying fuel and food, went down on Friday in Yahukimo district.

“The rescue team has found the bodies of the pilots... we plan to evacuate the bodies today,” Papua police spokesman Wachyono said.

Thick fog and bad weather had

prevented search-and-rescue teams from getting to the remote crash site earlier.

The sprawling Indonesian archi-pelago relies heavily on air trans-port and has a poor aviation safety record. Turbulent weather condi-tions in Papua have caused several air accidents in recent years.

Especially with an economic growth rate estimated to reach 6.5 pct in 2011, Gita Wirjawan said at Indonesian Business Day held at Haus der Commerzbank in Berlin, Counsellor for information, social and cultural affairs at the Indone-sian embassy in Berlin Ayodhia GL Kalake told Antara`s London correspondent on Sunday.

A similar statement was also made by Indonesian ambassador to the German Federal Republic Dr. Eddy Pratomo, that Indonesia now also G-20 member country, has a favorable economic statisti-cal record with a debt indicator to a GDP ratio of 26 pct, much better than China`s 60 pct.

Besides a very good monetary policy in which an interest rate increase is only once in the last several years namely 6.5 pct to 6.75 pct, a policy achievements which had never been made by any other country in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia is 46th of 160 coun-tries in the Global Competitiveness World Report. A positive economic condition was one of the consider-ations of foreign investors to oper-ate in Indonesia, besides national stability, corruption eradication, and bureaucratic obstacles as well as some other supporting factors.

The meeting themed “Business Potentials of Indonesian Indus-tries, Food, Health and Machin-ery Industries”, was addressed by International Cooperation Director General of the Industry Ministry Agus T. Wira Kusuma,

Jochen Sautter of German Center Indonesia, and Dr. Ing Gunadi Sindhuwinata, Commissioner of PT. Indomobil Group in a special session on Automotive Potentials and Engineering Industry.

Agus T. Wira Kusuma said that in the last five years Indonesia`s automotive industry had grown 7.5 pct per year, the highest growth rate among other indus-trial sub sectors in Indonesia.

In 2013 and 2014, Indonesia has set a target of producing 1 million cars. Gunadi Sindhuwi-nata added that the automotive industry contributed 26 pct of Indonesia`s national income.

In addition last year the car market had reached 2.3 million in the entire ASEAN region, while the total market of motorcycles in ASEAN reached 10.3 million.

In the meantime it had been projected that in 2040 Indonesia will have a motor vehicle market of 250 units/1000 people, both motorcycles and cars.

In the meantime, Agus said that Germany is a manufacturer of first class engineering products needed by Indonesia, so that for a business expansion, Indonesia is the right choice. Engineering products are among the 5 biggest imported goods in Indonesia and Indonesia`s engineering prod-uct imports from Germany had reached one billion US dollars or 40 pct of the total imports of engineering products from the European Union.

AMBON — Indonesia deployed security forces to an eastern re-gion after gangs of Muslims and Christians armed with rocks and machetes clashed in violence that left three people dead and 80 others injured, officials said Monday.

The violence broke out in the

Maluku provincial capital of Ambon on Sunday after rumors spread that a Muslim motorcycle taxi driver, who died in a traffic accident, had been killed and tortured by Chris-tians, said Capt. Marinus Djati, the Ambon traffice police chief.

Groups of Muslims confronted Christians after the man’s funeral. The two sides traded insults and

later started throwing rocks and swinging machetes, police said. The rioters also set fire to houses, cars and motorcycles despite police attempts to break up them up with warning shots, Djati said.

Two of the three people killed were high school students, said Ita Sabrina, spokeswoman at a hospital where many of the victims were

sent.At least 80 people were injured,

said Bakrie Asyatri, the local gov-ernment spokesman in Ambon.

More than 200 special forces were being deployed in Ambon to try to bring down tensions, said National Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam.

Indonesia is overwhelmingly

Muslim, but Christians form the majority in parts of Maluku — known as the Spice Islands in colonial times — and other eastern regions.

More than 9,000 people were killed in sectarian violence in Am-bon between 1999 and 2002 but the area has been largely peaceful since then.

SURABAYA - A horrific smash between a bus and an overloaded minibus killed 19 people in Indone-sia’s east Java province on Monday with police saying they suspected the drivers were speeding.

Mojokerto police chief Prasetijo Utomo said both drivers were killed in the accident, which occurred in Mojokerto district at 03:30 am (2030 GMT).

“The majority of the victims, 17 of them, were inside the minibus. One of the victims is a seven-year-

old girl,” Utomo said.“We suspect the bus and the

minivan were speeding. And the minivan was over capacity, it should have seated 10 people.”

Indonesia has a poor road safety record with drivers frequently flout-ing the law.

Bali Today

The decline was due tothe growing number of ho-tels and accommodations inother international touristdestinations although thenumber of tourist arrivals toBali continued to increase,Secretary of the Bali chapterof the Indonesian Hotelsand Restaurants Association(PHRI) Ferry Markus saidhere on Sunday.

In addition, many touristsvisited Bali not only for rec-reation but also for businessso that they shortened theirvisits to the world-renownedtourist island, he said.

“Many Asian and Euro-pean tourists shortened theirlength of stay because theycame to Bali not only forrecreation but also for busi-ness,” he said.

After all, the average of

tourists’ length of stay inBali was still high, he saidciting an example that dur-ing non-holiday seasons, theoccupancy rates of hotels inBali reached a minimum of60 percent.

uring holiday seasons,

90 percent as what happenedduring the post-fasting monthfestivities and New ear cel-ebrations, he said.

He said the matter shoulddraw attention from all partieswho cared about the develop-ment of tourism industry inthe island.

“There need to be moreintensive efforts to solve theproblem. It is not enoughto conduct promotion onlybut we should increase theaccommodation facilities inBali,” he said.

Archeologica l protec t ionthrough maintenance, preserva-tion and conservation, even throughreconstruction as well, has turnedto be an international problem notonly today, but actually in the fu-ture. Such matters were indicatedby the activities of UNESCO asan international institution, whoconcerned with the most impor-tant of world cultural heritage e.g.archeological remains. UNESCOhave done a lot of excellent work, which need a reasonable budgets, expert, equipment etc. and the bestexample is the safeguarding ofBrobudur temple. As the UNESCOmember, our governments are con-cerned and responsible to protectour monuments for our nationalinterest, such as Brobudur temple.

Based on the development of ar-chaeological studies and the related

iscussing the archaeologi-cal protection in Bali, it shouldbe remembered that Bali, even avery small island, but has a lot ofarchaeological monuments, whichmost of them belonged to livingmonuments. Among them are anumber of Hindu tample, spreatednearly in the whole island, as wellas Hindu stastues , inscriptionetc. As the holy monuments forBalinese society, so the Balinesehave the responsibility to take caretheir monuments as their religious

have done a lot of archaeologicalreconstruction, but not yet coveredthe whole of them, because of thelimited budgets etc.

In case of protecting the archaeo-logical monuments in Bali, Bali

-logical and Historical Heritage hasgiven a technical guidance to thelocal people for reconstructing their

as well. As the governments havea very limited budget for theseworks, and as the owner of theliving monuments, so the Balinesepeople have their religious tasksand responsibility to protect sacredmonuments. In Bali generally eachvillage have three village templesnamed Pura Kyayangan Tiga e.gPura Puseh,Pura esa (sometimecombined with Pura Bale Agung) and Pura dalem. Among them

are belonged to archaeologicalmonuments and frequently in thesetemple a number of archaeologicalmonuments are preserved such asstatues, inscription etc. It is im-portant to note here that the unityof the Balinese society is tightlybounded by the village templesand social organization.

Based on religious reasons, actuality Balinese society has astrong spirit to keep their monu-ments in a well condition as holymonuments. Since a very longtime the Balinese people havemaintained and restored theirmonuments in a very traditionalways, based on their own reli-gious will and spirit, and for thispurpose they collected the ma-terials, even reasonable moneyfrom the village members. Thevillage members, especiallythe skilled members (Balinese, undagi) did the restoration andled by the village leader, withoutany payment (Balinese, ngayah). This mutual model of worksnamed gotong royong is one ofthe Indonesian spirits, which has

been developed since the earlytime until today.

It is a remarkable fact since theearly time Balinese people havedone the archeological protectionin their traditional ways, whichreally should be regarded as a com-munity based conservation. Themost important meaning of thesefacts is the Balinese have donetheir religious task, which stillcontinued from one generation tonext generation and still retaineduntil today. Therefore these factsindicated that the Balinese peoplefrom time to time have playedimportant role for protecting theirarcheological monuments, forworshipping their ancestor’s spirit, the Hindu Trinity as well as theirlocal deities. It is hoped that thisreligious traditions should be keepin people’s mind and increased, now and in the near future for thesafeguarding the archeologicalmonuments and its cultural val-ues. Through this way it is hopedthat our cultural identity could bepreserved in the people’s mind forfacing the forthcoming modernworld.

One of the famous sites that always visit by tourists when holi-daying to Bali is Uluwatu. Uluwatu Temple is a Hindu temple set on the cliff bank in south part of Bali Peninsula. It is one of Sad Kahyan-gan Temple in Bali (six big groups of Bali Temples), located in Pecatu Village, Sub district of South Kuta, and Badung Regency or about 25 Km southerly part of Denpasar town. It is situated on the coral reef sordid to sea about 80 meters above the sea level. It is featured by a small dry forest which is mostly called by Alas Kekeran (interdict forest) which is belong to the temple and dwelt by a lot of monkeys and other animal. Name of Uluwatu was come from the word Ulu meaning the head and Watu meaning stone. Therefore Uluwatu Temple mean the temple built in tip of coral reef.

In the right and left of temple building or Pelinggih Ida Bagus

Ratu Jurit located in complex of Uluwatu Temple, there are two stone mangers that look like a boat. When both of it are united, hence it’s look similar to sarcophagus, the famous stone from megalithic era culture. There is archaeology omission coming from 16 centuries in firm of arch or winged entrance gate. Winged entrance gate is one of the scarce archaeology omis-sions. Winged entrance gate that is existing in Uluwatu Temple (a period of its making) can be com-pared with the same one located in mosque complex in Sendangduwur Village, Lamongan, East Java. The period of its making is relevant with the year Candrasengkala found at this inscription. Candrasengkala founded in the mosque is written by the wording Gunaning Salira Tirta Hayu meaning year 1483 Saka or 1561 Masehi.

If the sarcophagus that existing in Dalem Jurit complex area rep-resents the artifact, hence Uluwatu

Temple represents the place sancti-fied since era of megalithic culture (About 500 S.M). In papyrus of Usana Bali mentioned that Mpu Ku-turan (The Hindu Priest who spread out the Hinduism in Bali) had built a lot of temple in this island and one of them Uluwatu Temple.

Implicit at papyrus Padma Bhu-wana that Uluwatu Temple draw in the direction that is located in Southwest functioning to worship the Rudra God, one of the god in nine god (Dewata Nawa Sanga). Rudra God is the Deity Siwa as Pemralina or return to provenance. In this papyrus also mention that Uluwatu Temple is the Kahyangan World worshiped by entire Hindu people. Since this area is opened for public, it is visited by many people from all over the world because it has beautiful panorama with spectacular sunset and stunning view of Indian Ocean and deep the cliff bank. It is the perfect to visit in Bali.

The film’s contagious opening marked the beginning of the fall movie season by exceeding the studio’s es-timates. “I think Steven Soderbergh made a compelling movie that tapped into that fear that many of us have about illnesses, viruses and pandem-ics,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. general sales manager. “It’s like a train or car accident. You can’t look away. You prefer not to think about it, but when it’s presented to you, you want to learn more.”

Despite the breakout success of “Contagion,” it was the lowest grossing weekend of the year so far for the film industry, according to Paul Dergara-bedian, box-office analyst for Holly-wood.com. Dergarabedian said that’s typical for the weekend after Labor Day and expected business to pick up in the coming weeks as the Academy Awards race begins.

“There are some great titles that are on the way,” said Dergarabedian. “I see

several promising films — Oscar con-tenders like ‘50/50,’ ‘The Descendants’ and ‘Ides of March,’ and even potential big moneymakers like ‘Real Steel.’”

“The Help,” the acclaimed Dream-Works Pictures drama distributed by Disney about black Southern maids speaking out during the civil-rights movement, slipped to No. 2 with $8.7 million after three straight weeks at the top, bringing its domestic total to $137 million.

“Warrior,” the Lionsgate mixed-martial arts drama starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, punched up a $5.6 million debut in the No. 3 position. David Spitz, head of distribution for Lionsgate, said he expects “Warrior” to mirror the simmering success of “The Help.”

“The film has gotten unbelievable reviews,” said Spitz. “The audience reaction we’re getting on the movie is consistent. People like the film. It’s a slow burn. We think we’re going to be in theaters for a long time.”

LOS ANGELES — Andy Whitfield, who played the title role in the hit cable series “Spart-acus: Blood and Sand,” has died at age 39, according to represen-tatives and family. Whitfield died Sunday in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, manager Sam Maydew told the Associated Press.

“On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer,” Whitfield’s wife Vashti said in a statement. “He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be re-membered as the inspiring, coura-geous and gentle man, father and husband he was.”

Andy Whitfield — who was born in Wales and moved to

Australia in 1999 — was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the legendary Thracian slave in “Spartacus,” a role made famous by Kirk Douglas in the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film. The series proved a breakout hit for the Starz network and made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality.

Whitfield appeared in all 13 episodes of the first season that aired in 2010, and was prepar-ing to shoot the second when he was diagnosed with cancer. While waiting for Whitfield’s treatment and expected recovery, the network produced a six-part prequel, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” that aired earlier this year with only a brief voiceover from the actor.

But in January after Whit-field’s condition grew worse, the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the role.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” Starz President and CEO Chris Al-

brecht said in a statement Sunday night. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in ‘Spartacus’ and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life.”

Whitfield’s previous credits included appearances on the Australian TV shows “Packed to the Rafters” and “McLeod’s Daughters.”

NEW YORK — Amy Winehouse’s father says he believes she died after suffering a seizure related to alcohol detoxification and “there was nobody there to rescue her.”

The soul diva, who had fought drug and alcohol problems for years, was found dead in bed at her London home on July 23. Her family says toxicology reports indicated there was alcohol in her bloodstream but it was unclear

whether this had contributed to her death at age 27.

Mitch Winehouse said Friday dur-ing a taping of Anderson Cooper’s new syndicated talk show that traces of the prescription drug Librium, which is used to fight anxiety and withdrawal symptoms of alcoholism, were found in her body.

“Everything Amy did, she did to excess,” he said on the show, which is to air as Cooper’s debut Monday. “She drank to excess and did detox to excess.”

He said he regretted that his daughter — whose most famous song, “Rehab,” has her answering “no, no, no” when told to go to rehab — was trying to kick her alcoholism without a doctor’s help. He said “the periods of abstinence were becoming longer, and the periods of drinking were becoming shorter. It was heading in the right direction.”

The singer, whose other hits include “Tears Dry on Their Own,” had suf-fered seizures during this period and would lose consciousness. Her father admitted he was speculating that this happened on the morning she died and said he should find out more conclu-sively how she died when a full inquest into her death begins next month.

LOS ANGELES — “Contagion” infected enough moviegoers to catch the top spot at the box office. The problems were seen in a study of 60 children randomly assigned to either watch “Sponge-Bob,” or the slower-paced PBS car-toon “Caillou” or assigned to draw pictures. Immediately after these nine-minute assignments, the kids took mental function tests; those who had watched “SpongeBob” did measurably worse than the others.

Previous research has linked TV-watching with long-term attention problems in children, but the new study suggests more immediate problems can occur after very little exposure — results that parents of

young kids should be alert to, the study authors said.

Kids’ cartoon shows typically feature about 22 minutes of action, so watching a full program “could be more detrimental,” the research-ers speculated, But they said more evidence is needed to confirm that.

The results should be interpreted cautiously because of the study’s small size, but the data seem robust and bolster the idea that media ex-posure is a public health issue, said Dr. Dimitri Christakis. He is a child development specialist at Seattle Children’s Hospital who wrote an

editorial accompanying the study published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics. Christakis said parents need to realize that fast-paced programming may not be appropriate for very young children. “What kids watch matters, it’s not just how much they watch,” he said.

University of Virginia psychol-ogy professor Angeline Lillard, the lead author, said Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob” shouldn’t be singled out. She found similar problems in kids who watched other fast-paced cartoon programming.

She said parents should realize that young children are compromised in their ability to learn and use self-control immediately after watching such shows. “I wouldn’t advise watching such shows on the way to school or any time they’re expected to pay attention and learn,” she said.

MATSUYAMA, Japan — Takashi Yamada would prefer life without the nearby nuclear power plant. But the 66-year-old retired electronics retailer says, “It is also true we all need it.” Host communities such as this seaside city on the island of Shikoku need the jobs and financial subsidies the plants provide. And Japan’s $5.5-trillion economy needs the energy.

Many Japanese have grown uneasy with nuclear power since the March 11 tsunami, which left more than 20,000 dead or missing and sent a plant in Fukushima into meltdown. Anti-nuke protesters took to the streets, and a heated debate ensued over the future of atomic energy. A recent Associ-ated Press-GfK poll found that

55 percent of Japanese want to reduce the number of reactors in the country.

Six months later, though, the nation seems to be sticking with nuclear power, at least for now. Unlike Germany, which acceler-ated plans to phase out atomic energy after Fukushima, Japan shows no signs of doing so. In recent days, utilities began newly mandated earthquake and tsunami stress tests, a first step toward restarting reactors idled for maintenance.

“What is the alternative?” asks Fumiko Nakamura, a flower arrangement teacher in Tokyo. She worries about nuclear safety in earthquake-prone Japan but says it will take time to develop other types of energy. “Japan is a resource-poor nation, and we need electricity.”

Scientists on Sunday said they had devised sensors to detect breath and sweat which one day could lo-cate survivors buried under buildings hit by an earthquake or a bomb blast. “This is the first scientific study on sensing systems that could detect trapped people,” said Paul Thomas, a professor at Loughborough Uni-versity in central England.

The sensors sniff out metabo-lites, the gassy by-products of breakdown mechanisms, which come from breathing, sweating and urinating. Dogs can be trained to detect these compounds, but are

expensive to train, need frequent rest periods and both animal and trainer are exposed to danger during search operations.

“A device could be used in the field without laboratory support. It could monitor signs of life for pro-longed periods and be deployed in large numbers,” said Thomas. The tests sought to duplicate the condi-tions of a real disaster, in which eight volunteers spent five six-hour days in the simulation of a collapsed, glass-clad, reinforced-concrete building.

The compounds secreted by the volunteers body interacted with materials in the debris, and changed with conditions such as humidity,

heat, and wind strength and direc-tion, making the detection process much more difficult. The sensors rapidly detected human-generated carbon dioxide and ammonia in plumes of air that wafted through gaps in the “rubble.”

The devices also picked up the scent of other volatile organic compounds cast off by human bod-ies, such as acetone and isoprene. Intriguingly, there was a marked decrease in ammonia levels when the participants were asleep, but researchers could not explain why. The study appeared in the Journal of Breath Research, published by Brit-ain’s Institute of Physics (IOP).

BERNE - Barcelona and AC Milan meet in a heavyweightChampions League opener and the other match in their grouppits a team whose name is usually associated with beer against aside owing its existence to tractors.

The opening week of this season’s group stage features all theusual European soccer powerhouses with several mouth-wateringclashes alongside the start of Barcelona’s defence of their trophyagainst seven-times champions Milan on Tuesday.

Benfica host Manchester United in a repeat of the famous 1968-

tertain Arsenal and Manchester City take on Napoli in a meetingof two debutants hoping to become regulars in the continent’spremier club competition.

Bayern Munich, knowing they cannot afford any slip-ups if theywant to take part when their Allianz Arena hosts the final, havea tricky visit to Villarreal and four-times European championsAjax Amsterdam, hoping to reclaim their place among Europe’selite, host Olympique Lyon.

Those matches are likely to capture the attention of the publicand media yet old romantics such as UEFA president MichelPlatini are more likely to enjoy the meeting of Czech championsViktoria Plzen and their Belarus counterparts BATE Borisov inGroup H.

Plzen’s surprise qualification will be a tonic to Platini whohas tried to open up the Champions League to smaller clubs withfewer resources and wants teams to have local identity ratherthan foreign imports.

Far from buying their way to success, Plzen have only fourforeign players in their squad, all from neighbouring Slovakia, and stunned Czech football last season by winning their firstleague title with a team made up of promising youngsters andassorted journeymen.

“Some of our players weren’t good enough for other sides, butthey showed how well they can play here,” said coach Pavel Vrbawho took over three years ago.

PLAYMAKER HORWARTH

The team revolves around 36-year-old playmaker PavelHorwarth, who joined three years ago after he was no longerwanted by Sparta Prague and was voted Czech player of theyear last season. “The past two seasons with Plzen have beenthe best of my life. Winning the league with Plzen is my greatestachievement,” said the former Sporting Lisbon and Galatasarayplayer.

The city is where Pilsner beer was developed in the 19thcentury although Vikotria will have to stage matches in Prague, around 90 kilometres away, as their own stadium is still notup to Champions League standards. Seven-times Belarusianchampions BATE are making their second Champions Leagueappearance. The initials in their name stand for Borisov Auto-mobile and Tractor Electronics.

Founded as a factory side in 1973, they started in the Soviet-era Belarus second division and have become a major forcelocally since the mid 1990s. Like their opponents, they relylargely on home-bred players with only three foreigners -- twoSerbs and a Brazilian -- in the squad.

Both teams were helped by the qualifying system introducedunder Platini in which five group stage places are reservedfor champion teams from lower-ranked nations, and the samegoes for two of the other debutants Trabzonspor and Romanianchampions Otelul Galati.

Otelul visit FC Basel in Group C on Wednesday, a matchwhich plays second fiddle to the Benfica-Manchester Unitedmeeting at the Stadium of Light.

Twice European champions Benfica, who qualified as Por-tuguese runners-up, are the complete opposite to Plzen, havingstarted both legs of their playoff tie with eight South Americansand no home-based players in their side.

Trabzonspor, who initially qualified as Turkish runners-up andwere knocked out of the qualifiers by Benfica, were given a secondbite of the cherry when champions Fenerbahce were pulled out bythe Turkish FA over the country’s match-fixing scandal.

So facing a break point at the start of thesecond set Sunday night, Williams ripped aforehand that she celebrated with her familiaryell of “Come on!” The problem, it turned out,was she screamed as Stosur was reaching fora backhand, so the point wasn’t finished. Thechair umpire awarded the point to Stosur, set-ting Williams off on a series of insults directedat the official, a scene far less ugly than — yetreminiscent of — the American’s tirade at thesame tournament two years ago.

In the end, Stosur’s powerful shots andsteadiness allowed her to beat Williams 6-2,6-3 in a surprisingly lopsided upset for her firstGrand Slam title. Stosur left the court as theU.S. Open champion; Williams’ night endedwith her facing possible disciplinary action.

A sampling of what Williams said to chairumpire Eva Asderaki: “You’re out of control.”“You’re a hater, and you’re just unattractiveinside.” Asked at her news conference whethershe regretted any of her words, the 13-timeGrand Slam champion rolled her eyes andreplied: “I don’t even remember what I said.It was just so intense out there. ... I guess I’llsee it on YouTube.”

She won’t be the only one, for sure. Stosurprobably will prefer to watch footage of someof the points she dominated.

“I’m still kind of speechless. I can’t actuallybelieve I won this tournament,” Stosur said later, the silver U.S. Open trophy sitting a few feetaway. “I guess to go out there and play the way Idid is obviously just an unbelievable feeling, andyou always hope and you want to be able to dothat, but to actually do it, is unbelievable.”

The ninth-seeded Stosur became the firstAustralian woman to win a major championshipsince Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledonin 1980. Stosur received a text from the formerplayer that read: “Twinkletoes, you finally havegot what you deserved.”

Only 2-9 in tournament finals before beat-ing Williams, Stosur made the U.S. Open thethird consecutive Grand Slam tournament witha first-time women’s major champion, afterLi Na at the French Open, and Petra Kvitovaat Wimbledon. This was only the 27-year-oldStosur’s third title at any tour-level event, andwhat a way to do it. She took advantage ofWilliams’ so-so serving and finished with 12unforced errors to Williams’ 25.

BEIJING — Lukas Verzbicas kepthis promise. Verzbicas won the juniortitle at the world triathlon champion-ships Sunday, fulfilling his vow towin for his cancer-stricken friendand teammate Kevin McDowell. With a good prognosis after his finalchemotherapy treatment Aug. 22,McDowell was at the finish line tocheer as Verzbicas won in 56 minutes,21 seconds.

“I had him in my mind the wholerace. I knew I was doing it for him,”Verzbicas said. “It motivated memore than if I was just doing thisby myself.” Verzbicas finished 33seconds ahead of Germany’s JustusNieschlag, the European junior cham-pion. American Tony Smoragiewiczwon the bronze medal, finishing justfive seconds behind Nieschlag.

“This couldn’t have been a moreperfect ending,” said McDowell, who served as an assistant coach toVerzbicas and the U.S. team. “I re-ally believed he could do it and hemade it happen.” Verzbicas has beentouted as the next great Americandistance runner, only the fifth U.S.high schooler — and first in a decade— to break the 4-minute mile barrier.

He’d originally planned to spend thissummer getting ready for his freshmanseason at Oregon, but that changed inMarch after McDowell was diagnosedwith Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form ofblood cancer.

The teenagers — Verzbicas is 18,McDowell just turned 19 — havetrained together the past five yearswith the Multisport Madness TriathlonTeam, a club team in suburban Chica-go. Gifted on their own, they becameeven better because they pushed eachother to improve. Verzbicas was thejunior U.S. triathlon champ in 2008,McDowell in 2009. They finishedthird and fourth at last year’s juniorworlds, McDowell completing thesprint-distance course in 52 minutes,22 seconds. Verzbicas was 14 secondsbehind after being assessed a 15-second penalty.

“You can’t have a bad day, really, unless you’re both having a bad day,”Verzbicas said this summer. So whencancer forced McDowell to give uphis dream of winning the world titlethis year, Verzbicas took it and madeit his own. “Last tri tomorrow. It’sbeen an amazing journey, thanks foreveryone’s support this one’s for you@KMcDowell1,” Verzbicas said Sat-urday on Twitter.

The world champion was able to dominate the race once he had overtaken fast starter Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari early on.

“Very emotional,” said Vettel. “This circuit means a lot to me and has been very special - my first win was here so when I crossed the line I remembered every single bit.

“It’s unbelievable. A circuit that has been tough for us to be competitive and we came back this year and the car was amazing.”

Although Vettel was racing by himself for most of the distance, he had a busy first few laps with a three-abreast moment into the first corner with Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, and then a close call with Alonso through Curva Grande as the Ferrari defended just before Vettel’s successful pass.

“The start was not that good,” Vettel admitted. “It took me a while to see we were three alongside going into Turn 1. Then after the restart I was able to pass [Alonso]. He didn’t give me much room so I don’t know if he knew I was on that side.”

Red Bull had run a short top gear on Vettel’s car for better acceleration out of corners at the expense of top speed - a decision that paid off as he took pole, but was felt by his rivals to be a potential

weak point in the race, though Vettel said his win proved it had always been the right call.

“I don’t think we took any gamble today, we took the gamble yesterday in qualifying,” he said. “People saw our top speed was not very high so gears were slightly shorter, so I couldn’t use the speed on the straight, but for the race we were comfortable.

“I was able to pass Fernando without DRS but even with DRS it may have been a bit comfortable. All in all we did the right thing, had a great race car and great speed all the way through.”

Vettel can now clinch his second title in Sin-gapore in a fortnight if he outscores Alonso by 13 points and Jenson Button and Mark Webber by eight points - though this came as a surprise to the champion.

“Wow! I don’t know. It has been an incredible year so far to be honest, we have progressed so much as a team, got so much stronger,” said Vet-tel.

“We’ll just do Singapore as we used to do all the other races - go there and go step by step. “I am looking forward and we’ll see what happens there.”

Lewis Hamilton said he could not be happy with his fourth place at the Italian Grand Prix, having started from the front row of the grid.

The McLaren driver lost two places at the start of the race and was stuck behind Michael Schumacher for several laps, unable to pass the German, who has much faster on the straight with the Mercedes.

Hamilton was pleased to get some points in the end, but admitted dropping to fourth was far from ideal.

“It was not a great result. I started second and I fell back two places,” said Hamilton. “I’m definitely not happy, but that is motor racing. “I’m happy that I finished and got some points for the team so that’s a good step. I’m okay. We got some points and I

finished the race so I can’t complain really.”

The Briton claimed he was slower than Schumacher even when he had his DRS open on the main straight.

“I was too slow on the straights. I was just stuck behind him. He was very fast on the straight. He was as fast if not faster than me when I had my DRS engaged on the straight.”
