Head of Nurani Marhaen Fraction of Badung House of Representatives, I Wayan Suyasa, stated that he did not know about the visitation. “What are we doing in Japan?” Suyawa stated his curiousity last Monday (24/9).

What’s interesting, Suyasa who wanted to meet the Representative Secretary,

This caused him annoyed as Dharmajaya did not tell the Representatives that he went as none of the members are going with him. Moreover Dharmajaya is head of the household, his visitation to Japan has caused a delay on some works back here.

Secretary, AA Raka Yuda, explained that the visitation was to attend the biggest tourism promotion event where Badung Government joined other groups under the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry so there were other provinces and regencies in Bali

Darmawan, Head of Health Agency I Gede Putra Suteja, Head of Population and Civil Notes I Gede Wijaya and Dharmajaya. There were also other tourism companies in Bali. This visitation has been told to the Representatives and hoped some of the members do join, yet due to a different agenda none of them join. “This is a yearly event to promote our tourism in Japan knowing that Japan is one potential target for Bali’s tourism,” Yuda explained.

parking space to avoid crowdedness. This was disclosed by Secretary of the Indonesia Tourism Entrepreneurs Associa-

tion (GIPI) of Bali, Ketut Ardana, in Sanur on Monday (Sep 24). “Parking space is very important to give attention because we from travel agencies also occasionally bring guests by bus with capacity of 50 seats,” he said.

In response to the issue, Chairman of the SVF Committee, Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta Putra, said that his party had prepared an adequate space for SVF activities. However, if compared to last year’s, location of this time was smaller. It would be situated in the maisonette, next to the Grand Bali Beach Hotel, Sanur.

Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta Putra, or familiarly addressed Gusde, also admitted the opening of the SVF activity would no longer be graced with massive parade as last year’s. This time, the parade would not take the route of Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, but only used the Jalan Danau Tamblingan from Sindu hamlet to the festival venue. “It will only take about half an hour. Not too many people will be involved,” said Gusde last Monday.

Gusde doubling as Chairman of the Sanur Development Foundation said the SVF of this time would take place on September 26-30, 2012. “We organize the SVF as part of celebration made by Sanur residents by integrating spiritual, social and tourism activities to achieve prosperity,” he said. Besides, the life of Sanur community that had long coexisted with tourism activities always maintained in order the travelers could feel at home and brought in a deep impression about Sanur. As evidence, some tourists repeatedly came back to Sanur as repeater guests.

Budakeling village has a population of 6,400 or about 1,124 families. The concept of tourism village began to be developed at the village in 2008. In 2009, it made a regulation on guest and throughout 2011 the village received some tourist visits. For 2012, the village has received room reservation from tourists for next April. On the other hand, a total of 21 units of house belonging to local residents have been ready to be occupied.

During the stay at Budakeling village, the tourists will be redirected to a few places at the village, such as traditional market, school, village hall,

and woven fabrics. In traditional market, tourists will make transaction with the traders

and they have an opportunity to bargain the price. It is a rare experience for tourists. At local village hall, tourists will be introduced to the existing communication system in Bali usually marked with the sound of kulkul or wooden split drum and pesangkepan or assembly. In school, tourists will be asked to teach a language, or help the students by providing textbooks

On that account, tourists will not only pass through the path at all,” said Ida Wayan Oka.

As a supporting tourist attraction, the Budakeling village also organized two annual events, namely the mini Bali Arts Festival (BAF) as well as the Arts and Cultural Games. During the implementation of the event, it was

Based on observation at SDN 17 Dangin Puri on Monday (Sep 24), three rooms functioned as classrooms had been fully dis-mantled. After dismantling those classrooms, it was just known if two adjacent rooms were also dam-aged. Their window frames looked to have decayed and some even had broken. “We just encountered them yesterday after the classrooms were dismantled. Apparently, the room of headmaster and school ad-ministration was also damaged. If not repaired, it can be hazardous,” said one of the local teachers.

Mangupura (Bali Post) –To build new public facilities

in Badung a procurement couldn’t take place properly as a new regula-tion Law No 2 Year 2012 on Land Procurement for Public Needs stated every procurement taken by regency or city government have to be the responsibility and teamed up with province government. “Province government has to form a team and its rights stated under an authority letter from the Governor while the Regency only suggest and be in the team. Before this law, it is clear who has the project pro-cess it except if the land procured is more than 1 hectare , therefore there would be a team by regency level,” Head of Badung Regional

Secretary Governmental Arrange-ment, Nyoman Soka, stated last Monday (24/9).

The facility recently developed was a land procurement for high school SMA 1 Abiansemal parking space with budget IDR 400 million from the Budget and Expenses. Even though it has been socialized and a compensation discussion has taken place moreover exceed an agreement, yet the project couldn’t be started due to the new regula-tion. This cause worries that the project’s process won’t be quick moreover the President Regulation hasn’t been produced. Soka only hoped that there will be a regulation that could possibly move the right from governor to regent. (kmb25)

A salt farmer on Karangdadi Beach, Ketut Kaping, said on Monday (Sep 24) the number of salt farmers tended to diminish at recent years. Formerly, the salt farmers reached hundreds of people and were divided into in some groups. But now, only 25 families still survived. Most of them had started to complain because the salt price continued to drop. Kaping, in his simple shack protected by walls made of plaited bamboo and roofed by dried coconut leaves, said that many salt farmers now preferred to wander to town because they could not survive just by becom-ing a salt farmer.

Earlier, the salt farmers here were once promised assistance by the government. Even, some farmers had been taken to the

office of subdistrict head to sign several documents. At that time, said Kaping, the assistance to farmers would be immediately disbursed. What happened then? It was said that someone had taken the assistance for salt farmers. Kaping then realized if the pres-ence of salt farmers was only taken advantage to withdraw the assis-tance. “We are deceived. Having signed the documents, the money was taken away by the person,” he said. He added the amount of the assistance was about IDR 50 million for several groups of salt farmers. Until now, the assistance remained mysterious.

For each day, three salt farmers could produce 50 kg of good qual-ity salt. If the salt was sold out, the sale was then divided by the three farmers where each would gain

IDR 15,000, as long as the weather permitted the process of salt mak-ing. If the weather was erratic, then the salt farmers would go home and bring nothing. Sometimes, they did not go home and chose to overnight on the beach.

Another salt farmer, Ketut Wati, also revealed the same condition. She just depended on the results of making salt to support her two children who were still attending school. Even, she said that she had taken her children to stay in a simple shack under coconut trees on that beach.

Wati added that when the salt farmers were still productive, the salt product of Kusamba was even exported to foreign countries, such as Japan and the United States. Therefore, many foreigners oc-casionally made their time visit the simple salt production shack on the beach. Even, the tourists purchased the salt of farmers in large quantities. Ironically, it was now difficult for tourists to reach the salt production site owned by farmers because there was a proj-ect once blocking the road access to the beach. (kmb31)

Denpasar (Bali Post) –Five Carrefour workers of Sunset

Road Branch, Kuta, Wahyudi alias Yudi (31), Made WIrayasa alias Wira (20), Wayan Bagiarta alias Bagi (23), Ketut Budi Astawa alias Budi (22) and Putu Adi Mahendra (23) had to stay in Kua Police after found robbing the warehouse of the supermarket. Dozens of electronics such as LCD and LED televisions were taken. The incident was re-vealed after a security working for the company, Mario Novita Susanto, informed one of the accused, Yudi, took a box. “After checked by Ma-rio it was damaged electronics that will be taken back to the supplied. Yet under it there was another box with LCD Television brand LG 26 inch. Yudi didn’t admit that he has

taken it,” Head of Kuta Police, PC Dedi Ujiana, explained last Monday (24/9).

To prove it, Mario who lives at Imam Bonjol Street, Ratna Sari Alley, West Denpasar, checked the warehouse and found dozens of items missing. This case was then reported to the police. From the recent investigation, Yudi was the one robbing it yet he did not want to stand alone. The other four work-ers were then also captured and admitted their act along bringing the evidence to investigators.

It was stated accused have been captured since 8th September yet for its development it just got exposed now. The investigation is still ongoing and see if there are any more accused. (kmb21)

Bangli (Bali Post) –A light green color Hino truck

with number plate DR 8342 AB that has been parked in one of the main streets of Bangli nearby Bangli Police Headquarters the past two months seemed to be suspi-cious moreover it is not a Bali car number plate and not maintained at all. After checked with the po-lice, turns out it was an evidence of a traffic accident happened in Kintamani two months ago kept by Bangli Traffic Police.

The accident was between the truck and a pick-up which the truck hit. As they wanted to solve the problem peacefully, the truck owner was asked for compensa-tion from the pick-up owner so the case was closed without any

legal eact. Yet ironically the owner of the truck never came to see the police and took the truck so it is parked out on the main road due to the limited parking space in the headquarters.

Head of Bangli Traffic Police, APC I Made Sunarya, last Mon-day (24/9) confirmed that his side has sent a number of summoning letter the owner yet none of them were fulfilled. Meanwhile Gede Parwata who lives in front of the truck stated that before the truck was parked here, the driver admit-ted that there’s a problem with the clutch and so has to leave it for the while. The driver did mention the problem to the boss yet up to now there are no confirmation why it is not taken. (kmb17)

Semarapura (Bali Post)—Being a salt farmer indeed face many challenges, ranging from

the weather, waves to uncertain result of sale. Similar condition is also experienced by salt farmers on Karangdadi Beach, Kusamba, Dawan. They produce salt every day though knowing if their prod-ucts are very difficult to be marketed at standard price. Formerly, they were happy as promised to get assistance from the government. Unluckily, it was only a promise without a clear follow-up.

IN the area of Ambengan Hamlet, Pesanggaran, lies in a haunted ancient temple named Dalem Petingan Temple. The temple looks so classical and has much inspired the art of life in Bali. It includes in usadhic or traditional healing practices and guidance how to inhibit the Lapindo mudflows. Why?

To reach this temple, people should pass through a circular path toward Benoa Harbor. In the west of the road lies a path leading to the swamp to get through the temple. The temple itself has no compound wall and is situated in the middle of the swamp. Strangely, it has been securely protected by invisible compound wall.

This temple is easily acces-sible even though located in the middle of the swamp. From the street, we can walk along some five meters toward the temple. Jero Mangku Tanggu is respon-sible for overseeing and cleaning up the temple area every day. He receives these tasks from his ancestors. During the period of temple anniversary, fifteen days before Galungan, it is always crowded by devotees.

The shrines existing in the temple consist of a main chamber as the sanctum to venerate deity Ida Ayu Mas having connection with Pulaki Temple. She is be-lieved to be the source of life, so many traders and businessmen say prayers to this temple. Ad-ditionally, this temple is also the place to invoke divine inspiration (taksu) in the field of arts. Many art troupes invoked such divine inspiration in this temple, said Nyoman Sukayasa, one of the devotees who frequently wor-shiped in this temple.

On the left front side of the chamber occurs the shrine used for meeting hall of deities. Mean-while, in front of the meeting hall there is a gamelan pavilion. Then, in the north of chamber shrine, there are two shrines, namely the Panglurah and representative shrine of Ida Bhatara Pulaki.

Interestingly, under a big tree lies a shrine for venerating Ida Bhatara Lingsir Sidi Ngucap. People having profession as traditional healer usually invoke efficacy in this shrine. Then, at outermost courtyard lies a guard-ian shrine. This temple does have a compound wall, so that a series of stone are piled in such a way used as the wall, but its front wall is marked by a pile of bricks.

According to I Nyoman Su-kayasa and Ida Bagus Sudira

serving as mediator of the vener-ated deities in this temple con-firmed the existence of invisible compound wall protecting the temple. These two devotees were often assigned as mediator to in-form any instructions received in the temple. Even, Bagus Sudira often performed a healing service in the temple and most people got their recovery within relatively a short time.

In the east of the temple, there is a pond without a shrine. It is believed as the abode of Anant-abhoga dragon. Though without shrine, at this location lies a small burrow that often appears used as an augury. Guardian animal of the deities abiding in this temple are black tiger and ivory tiger. However, they have not been re-alized in the form of effigies.

Nyoman Sukayasa added that deities abiding in the temple also had ties and linkages to Dalem Warung Temple located at Benoa landfill. The deity venerated in this temple was Ida Bhatara Man-ik Segara. His father abided in the Dalem Muter Temple, Kesiman, having the title of Ida Bhatara Catur Pramana Lingga. In addi-tion, it had relation to Uluwatu Temple as the mother called Ida Sang Hyang Ibu Pertiwi with the title of Ida Bhatara Baruna and Ida Bhatara Rudra. It was Ida Bhatara Rudra which endowed the cessa-tion of Lapindo mudflows, said Nyoman Sukayasa.

In the meantime, Ida Ayu Mas in the Dalem Petingan Temple was also said to have a grandfather who was worshiped in Pulaki Temple as Ida Bhatara Lingsir. Meanwhile, his sibling was venerated in the Ram-butsiwi Temple with the title of Ida Bhatara Sakti. Another brother was worshiped in the Dalem Perancak Temple at Canggu revered as Ida Bhatara Tri Premana Lingga and had relation to Ida Bhatara Sakti Pengadangan.

Even, Nyoman Sukayasa claimed to have received a rev-elation in the temple about the best way to discontinue the Lapindo mudflows. His trip to Sidoarjo with other Hindu devotees was so long. He did a pecaruan exorcism rite on the full moon in last April precisely in center of outburst. It was carried out under life-threatening chal-lenge, but he was determined to resume the holy mission because it was a part of God’s will. Ulti-mately, he thanked God because the Lapindo mudflows had now subsided. “That’s His will, we are only an intermediary,” said Sukayasa.

“Everything starts with a seed. If you take, you must give,” says Hasa-nain Juaini, winner of the 2011 Ra-mon Magsaysay award. This simple yet essential ethic inspires the seed idea of the project, in the form of baby tree gifts to be handed out to the audience while being mapped with light and sound.

From this modest starting point, the event developed into a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk on the theme of the environmental in art, moving into community action with work-shops offered to children about instrument building, botany and found-art sculpture.

This is a once in a lifetime op-portunity to see a stunning variety of luminaries from the world of theater, art, music, and dance in one place and time. Rahman Sabur, consistently directing exceptional, cutting-edge theatrical work in Java and abroad for 20+ years; Bulqini, whose lighting design and stage sets bridge the worlds of conceptual art, theater, music and film on an international level; Wukir Suryadi, darling of the music world with his

handmade instruments and charis-matic and breathtaking stage pres-ence; Cahyo Basuki Yopi, whose fantastic found-object sculptural toys captured the hearts of the art world with their humorous allusions and fantastical moving parts -- these are only a few of the artists gracing the stage at the Setia Darma Mu-seum of Masks and Puppets.

There are certain moments when various trends, feelings, expressions, gestures, and attempts suddenly co-alesce into a concerted movement. Suddenly the flows and feelings of the underground emerge into a historically essential structure. At some point or another, surrealism, abstract expressionism and Soviet realism became more than various trends, they became a historical ac-tion with meaning.

The artwork in this exhibition moves beyond deconstruction: “The artwork is a form of creativ-ity, but good creativity does not stop at merely deconstructing, it is a process that always simultane-ously intensifies and transforms, the process to rediscover reality, search

for the most natural elements and reformulate what is what we have been truly searching all this time,” writes Jonas Sestekresna, organizer of the event.

It makes sense that such a para-digm shift should originate in Indo-nesia, a place where community and social values still predominate. This is something very different than Damien Hirst’s skull of diamonds, which com-ments on a problem in a striking way, yet restates the problem in its materi-als, even creating a seductive aura that perpetuates the social ill.

Instead, the artworks and perfor-mance embody values that propose solutions to social problems and enact them not merely in the artwork and performance but in the social realm with youth education. All this without sacrificing sophistication and imagination in the allure of the creative process.

If this is indeed a paradigm shift that takes root, grows and spreads, the art of the next century will see the barriers between concep-tual art and community broken. Art will play a powerful role in social transformation and environmental protection, linking modern and traditional, found objects and tech-nological advances, conceptual and functional, hand in hand in common purpose to enhance the collective life of the community.

In an interview with Reuters in Madrid, the 11-times grand slam singles champion said he was still feeling some pain in his left knee and would only return to the court when that was no longer the case.

“I am working as much as I can, I am doing everything they tell me to every day and the truth is that right now things are going well, more or less,” the 26-year-old Spaniard said.

“The only thing is that I need bit more time,” he added.

“We’ll see how things develop in the next few weeks but my priority is to recover well, not quickly but well.

“Obviously as soon as possible but the main thing is to have the certainty that you are fine when

you do return.“I will return to the court when

I feel that the knee no longer gives me any pain, whether that is in two weeks or in three or four.”

Majorca-native Nadal has been sidelined several times by knee inju-ries during his 11-year career and his latest was diagnosed as a partial tear of the patella tendon and an inflam-mation of the Hoffa’s fat pad.

The former number one has not played since suffering a shock sec-ond-round defeat to Czech Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June. He missed the Olympic Games after win-ning the title in 2008 and was forced to withdraw from the U.S. Open.

Nadal is having intense phys-

iotherapy and laser treatment and Spanish tennis federation (RFET) doctor Angel Ruiz-Cotorro said on September 5 he could be back on court training within a month.

AGGRESSIVE, DEMANDING“I think tennis is a very ag-

gressive and demanding sport and obviously the knees suffer above all when you are playing on hard courts,” Nadal said.

“On fast courts the movements are much more aggressive, when you are playing at your maximum you have to push your body to the limit.

“I have had problems with my knees, others have other problems.

“The reality is that at the age of 26 and after a career of more than 10 years, with very good results, it has been my good fortune that my knees have not prevented me competing at the highest level for many years.

McLaren thinks it cannot af-ford any more reliability issues this year if it is going to win the world championship. Lewis Hamilton’s gearbox failure in the Singapore Grand Prix has left the Briton 52 points adrift of Fernando Alonso in the standings with six races remaining.

But despite recent strong pace shown by McLaren, the retire-ments that Hamilton and Jen-son Button have suffered in the last two races have highlighted problems that the outfit needs to overcome.

Nevertheless, team principal Martin Whitmarsh feels it can still give Hamilton the car he needs to triumph, as long as its works hard to ensure there are no more race retirements. “We have got a reasonably fast car but I would rather no DNFs for the rest of the season,” he said. “That would be quite a good way of attacking the rest of this cham-pionship.

“We have to make sure that we get Lewis to the finish six more times this year without is-sues, and if he is doing that and, with the current pace of the car, then the title is possible.”

Hami l ton’s retirement from the lead in Sin-gapore could not have come at a worse time, with the title battle finely poised and the Briton pondering his future options.

Whitmarsh thinks, however, that Hamilton will remain fully fo-cused on pushing on for the title rather than dwelling about what went wrong.

“Lewis has been very strong about it, and he has been support-ive of the team,” he said. “We are obviously disappointed, but he is in a very strong place.

“We have six rounds of this championship left and there are 150 points available to him; so if we can go out there and win him 150 points then that makes a world championship threat.

“We have to look forward. We are disappointed with the out-come here, but we are not giving up and neither will he. We will keep on fighting.”

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Who does Michael Phelps look up to? That bar has to be set pretty high for the all-time leader in Olympic medals. And so, sitting with David Feherty during a special Ryder Cup edition of Feherty Live, the Golf Channel’s version of a late-night talk show, Phelps talked about the man who inspires him most.

Michael Jordan joined Michael Phelps on Feherty Live. (Yahoo!

Sports)Michael Jordan.Feherty’s show had come to the

grand old Tivoli Theater in suburban Chicago, where it was only fitting that No. 23 would come up in con-versation. For it was only 20 miles to the east where Jordan led the Bulls to six NBA championships. Feherty joked that his low-budget show couldn’t afford the real Michael Jordan, only a blowup one, and with that out stepped the five-time MVP,

drawing the capacity crowd inside the Tivoli Theater to its feet and an adoring smile across Phelps’ face.

Of all the famous people Phelps has rubbed elbows with over the years, Jordan hasn’t been one of them. Until Monday night.

Already shy whenever a camera is shoved in his face, Phelps could barely muster a sentence sitting next to MJ. Feherty wondered why a kid from Baltimore would grow up idol-

izing a guy playing in Chicago.“He’s the greatest,” Phelps mut-

tered as he stared at his shoes. And then, in a moment as re-

freshing as an early-morning swim, Phelps let everyone know just how he felt: “I’m at a loss for words.”

Phelps said he has been in the pool since announcing his official retirement following the London Olympics, but only for a little exercise. He insisted on more than

one occasion Monday night that he’s “not coming back.” Golf, it appears, is where at least some of his focus is now, though he says he’s not very good at it. (His swing, which Feherty broke down on video, showed otherwise.)

The dedication to swim seven days a week for at least the last 12 years took its toll on Phelps, who called retirement “the best thing to ever happen.”

LONDON - England international Theo Walcott expressed his desire to stay at Arsenal on Monday although he said he was happy to let contract negotiations with the north London club run their course. The 23-year-old has been the subject of intense speculation about his future as he and club

said I wanted to go. I’ve always said I wanted to be an Arsenal player,” Walcott told Reuters at an English Football Association (FA) “Just Play” event north of London.

I’m not that sort of person at all. It’s always been a football decision for me. If it was about the money, I would’ve gone in the summer. “Hope-fully, something can be sorted...we’re just waiting for the club to come back to us and go from there. Hopefully, I can get back in that team and start playing again.”

Walcott said he wanted to play as a striker instead of the wide role he has usually occupied for Arsenal but he has been sitting mainly on the substitutes’ bench this season as the team have made an encouraging start.

A thumping 6-1 win over Southampton was followed by a 2-1 vic-tory at French champi-ons Montpellier in the Champions League and Arsenal drew 1-1 at Premier League cham-pions Manchester City on Sunday. “We’ve had two very positive away matches against top teams,” Walcott said. “I think we could’ve done better against Man City as well but you’ve got to take that. We’re only going to get better.”

Walcott also paid tribute to John Terry, the former England captain, who announced his international retirement on S u n d a y. Terry’s decision came just a day before he was due to appear before an FA disciplinary committee facing charges of racially abus-ing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand despite being acquitted in the law courts.

“It’s obviously sad to see but you’ve got to respect his decision,” Walcott said. “Personally, he’s been great to me. When

ROME - AS Roma have been awarded a 3-0 walkover win for Sunday’s match at Cagliari after the game was called off for security reasons, Serie A said in a statement on Monday.

Cagliari club president Massimo Cellino was also referred to the Italian football federation’s prosecutor for possible further sanctions after calling on supporters to defy an order from local authorities to play the game behind closed doors.

Cagliari have moved to the Is Arenas on the outskirts of the Sardinian capital but authorities ruled last Thurs-day that the renovated stadium was not ready to host Serie A games despite recent improvements.

The Sardinians had previously been forced to play their opening Serie A home match against Atalanta behind closed doors.

On Saturday, Cagliari issued a statement slamming

the authorities”. They invited fans to watch the Roma game, saying the stadium was safe.

Cagliari’s city government responded by postponing the game. Cagliari had played at the Stadio Sant’Elia from 1970 until late on last season when they abandoned the dilapidated arena due to disagreements with the local authorities and grow-ing safety worries.

They staged their remaining home games last season in Trieste, around 1,000 miles from their base and closer to Belgrade than the Sardinian capital.

MOSCOW - Disgrunt led Zenit St Petersburg captain Igor Denisov, demoted to the reserve team after issuing a contract ul-timatum, has demanded to know why the likes of big signing Hulk are paid so much more than Rus-sian players.

Media reports have said several senior Zenit players are unhappy after the club, bankrolled by Russian energy giant Gazprom, splashed more than $100 million on Brazil striker Hulk and Bel-

before the transfer deadline.Zenit have failed to win a

game since, suffering a 2-0 home defeat by Chechen side Terek Grozny before being crushed by Spanish club Malaga 3-0 in their Champions League opener last week.

“I’m not against foreign play-ers but there must be a balance in the team,” Russia captain Denisov told the Sport-Express daily. “Yes, the club has bought good players but do you think they are so much better than us

that they should make three times as much?”

Local media said midfielder Denisov was making three mil-lion euros ($3.90 million) a year and was asking for a two million euro raise.

“Zenit already have great play-ers who have won as many titles as the new guys. I would under-stand if we got (Lionel) Messi or (fellow Barcelona player Andres) Iniesta. They would deserve any price,” he added.

“But now we are unbalanced in the team and I had tried to explain that to our management. The principles of how the club is run are the most important as well as the respect of the Rus-sian players, especially us - the St Petersburg natives who have always made up the core of a team like Zenit.

“In no top European league will you see that foreign players get preferential treatment, just the opposite - they must be head and shoulders above the locals to make the team.”

LONDON - The English Football Association (FA) have rejected Chelsea defender John Terry’s claims that an investigation into his alleged racial abuse of an opponent during a Premier League match last year had forced him to retire from England duty. The 31-year-old former national captain brought his England career to an abrupt end on Sunday, saying his position in the national team had become “untenable” due to the FA’s impending case against him.

The Chelsea skipper stood before an FA tribunal set to last four days on Monday, facing charges of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand last October despite being ac-quitted in the law courts in July. FA general secretary Alex Horne dismissed Terry’s objections to the hearing, saying that the govern-ing body was not responsible for the player’s decision to retire.

“It’s a personal decision. I don’t see how we have made it unten-able, they are two very separate processes,” Horne told the British media on Monday. “It’s something that happened in a match - it shouldn’t be taking a year to resolve but we feel we are reaching a conclusion on that.

“That’s a very different process from our England procedures; they sit in different compartments and I could separate the two in my mind, but it doesn’t look like he could.”

If found guilty of racially abusing Ferdinand, Terry could face a lengthy ban similar to the eight-match one served by Liverpool’s Luis Suarez last season. London-born Terry, capped 78 times since his debut in 2003 including appearances in two World Cups, has spent his entire career with Chelsea since joining the European champions as a 14-year-old.

PARIS - Indonesia’s Lion Air may add more jets to recent plane orders in order to keep pace with Southeast Asia’s transport growth as a U.S. analyst said the airline may place a multi-billion-dollar order with Eu-rope’s Airbus.

Lion Air co-founder and chief ex-ecutive, Rusdi Kirana, said on Tues-day that Southeast Asia’s double-digit increase in air travel demand, spurred by economic growth and rising in-comes, was set to continue.

“We think that in the next decade we will need a lot of aircraft,” he told Reuters in a telephone interview. “The market is growing very fast. We are looking, but it depends on pricing and many other factors. We are talking, but we have not made any decisions.”

U.S. aerospace analyst Scott Ham-ilton said however, that Lion Air was poised to order up to 100 Airbus jets, breaking Boeing’s (BA) dominance at Indonesia’s largest domestic airline.

Orders of 100 aircraft would be worth approximately $9 billion at list prices for 150-seat jets like the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, but airlines usu-

ally negotiate steep discounts.Officials with Airbus could not im-

mediately be reached for comment.Lion Air shot to attention in late

2010 when a provisional order for 230 Boeing jets got high billing during a visit to the world’s fourth most-populous nation by U.S. President Barack Obama, eager to play up the importance of U.S. exports.

Confirmed in February this year, the record deal took Lion Air’s order book to more than 400 planes, which it aims to use to fly across the Asia-Pacific region.

Bolstered by export credits from Western producing countries, airlines in emerging markets have been placing significant bets on air travel in a region where passenger growth outpaces that of developed nations despite some spillover from Europe’s debt crisis.

Indonesia’s average annual pas-senger growth is 21 percent, accord-ing to Lion Air.

If confirmed, a deal between Lion Air and Boeing’s arch-rival could be seen as a turning point after a series of orders that lifted the airline to be one of Boeing’s top customers.

Airbus, a subsidiary of EADS

(EAD.PA), and Boeing, have been locked in a fierce price fight for much of this year, often halving official list prices to take or defend market share, according to multiple industry sources and analysts.

Jakarta-based Lion Air competes with one of Airbus’s largest custom-ers, AirAsia of Malaysia, which has itself confirmed plans to order another 100 Airbus jets in addition to a total of 375 already ordered, of which 100 are now in service.

Lion Air this month also announced plans to challenge AirAsia by setting up a new, low-cost airline based in Malay-sia as Southeast Asia’s growing middle class fuels demand for cheap flights.

The new carrier, Malindo Airways, will begin flights between Indonesia and Malaysia next May with a fleet of 12 Boeing 727 aircraft, which it plans to expand to 100 planes within a decade, Kirana said when announc-ing the launch.

Lion Air meanwhile, says it is in talks with Boeing to buy 10 787 Dreamliners worth $1.9 billion to tap the long-haul market. The plan would extend an initial deal in June to buy five 787 Dreamliner passenger jets.

Consumer confidence in Germany is stagnating, market re-search company GfK said, hard on the heels of data showing the eurozone crisis had pushed down business confidence, sparking recession alarm bells to ring.

While the eurozone debt crisis has brought Greece to its knees and caused Spain, its fourth-largest economy, to wobble, Germany has until recently weathered the turbulence relatively unscathed.

But consumers in Europe’s powerhouse appeared cautious.GfK said in a statement that its household confidence index

was forecast to remain at 5.9 points in October, the same level as the reading in September.

While consumers’ willingness to spend and their assessment of the economic situation had improved, they expected their own personal income situation to worsen over the coming months, the GfK said.

The headline consumer confidence reading is based on re-sponses from about 2,000 households on their expectations about pay and the economy as a whole in the coming months, as well as their willingness to spend money.

On Monday, economists warned that Germany was headed for recession after the eurozone crisis pushed down business confi-dence in the country to the lowest level since February 2010.

The Ifo institute said its closely watched survey of the busi-ness climate in Germany dropped unexpectedly in September for the fifth month running to 101.4 points from 102.3 points in August.

Jennifer McKeown, an analyst at Capital Economics, said the data was a reminder that even the eurozone’s strongest economies were suffering which could in turn hit their ability to help weaker neighbours.

“In all ... it seems like only a matter of time before the economy starts to contract. This will make support for the peripheral economies even more difficult to muster,” she added.

Germany has relied on its powerful export motor to keep the economy humming through the near three-year crisis in the 17-country bloc, notching up modest growth of 0.3 percent in the second quarter while the eurozone as a whole contracted by 0.2 percent.

But new car registrations, a key indicator of demand in Ger-many, tumbled sharply in August, retail sales figures also declined and unemployment is starting to rise.

Despite the setback, however, Pyongyang is also refurbishing for possible future use another existing pad at the same complex that has been used for past rocket launches, according to the analysis of Aug. 29 images provided to The Associated Press by 38 North, the website of the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced In-ternational Studies.

While the renovations don’t mean a launch is imminent, they in-dicate North Korea is preparing the site for possible future rocket tests, according to the 38 North special report written by Nick Hansen.

North Korea conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, but experts don’t believe Pyongyang has yet mastered the technology needed to shrink a nuclear weapon so it can be mounted onto the tip of a long-range missile.

There are worries, however, about North Korea’s rocket and missile programs. The United States, South Korea and others have said North Korea uses rocket launches, includ-

ing a failed effort in mid-April, as covers to test banned missile systems that could target parts of the United States. North Korea says recent rocket launches were meant to put peaceful satellites into orbit.

North Korea has repeatedly vowed to push ahead with its nuclear program in the face of what it calls U.S. hostility that makes a “nuclear deterrence” necessary.

Both the new launch pad where work has been suspended and the ex-isting launch pad being refurbished are at the Tonghae launch complex, which houses nine facilities around the villages of Musudan, No-dong and Taepo-dong on the northeast coast, according to the report.

“Despite the temporary halt in construction at the new Tonghae launch pad and the failed test last April, the North Koreans appear de-termined to eventually build bigger and better rockets,” Joel Wit, a for-mer U.S. State Department official and editor of 38 North, told AP.

The failed April launch of Pyong-yang’s new Unha-3 rocket occurred at

the Sohae Satellite Launching Station in Tongchang-ri, a sophisticated, new-er site on the country’s northwestern coast. The new commercial satellite photos of Tonghae, taken by Digital-Globe, also show halted construction at fuel and oxidizer buildings near the new pad, the analysis said. Those buildings are described as crucial to any future tests.

The exact reason for the halt isn’t clear, but the analysis says the rains this summer that killed dozens of peo-ple and submerged large amounts of farmland are one explanation. North Korea is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters because of its poor drainage, widespread deforestation and poor infrastructure.

There are no workers or heavy construction equipment at the new pad site. No flooding can be seen in the new photos, but the analysis speculates that the construction equipment may have been moved to help with rebuilding efforts else-where. It says that heavy equipment can only get to the site by a rutted dirt trail that crosses a stream.

“Whatever the reason, the slow-down, barring concerted North Korean efforts to make up for lost time, could result in a 1-2 year slip in the planned completion date of the new complex, which was probably the middle of this decade,” the report said.

NEW YORK — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton appealed Monday to Muslims to show “dignity” and not resort to violence as they protest an anti-Islam film produced in the United States.

Speaking at her husband’s Clinton Global Initiative before meeting the presidents of Afghan-istan, Egypt, Libya and Pakistan on the sidelines of the annual U.N. General Assembly, Clinton said the United States would always champion the rights to peaceful protest and free expression even if it deplored the content of the speech. But, she said, “dignity does not come from avenging insults.”

Her comments came as dem-onstrators angry over the vulgar depiction of the Prophet Moham-med in the video continue to pro-test around the Muslim world and Pakistani government minister put a $100,000 bounty on the head of the filmmaker.

“Dignity does not come from avenging insults, especially with violence that can never be justi-fied,” Clinton said. “It comes from taking responsibility and advanc-ing our common humanity.”

Fomenting grievance, she said, produces violent protests that ac-complish nothing in the way of improving living standards, creat-ing jobs or developing societies.

“Building schools instead of burning them, investing in their people’s creativity, not inciting their rage, opening their econo-mies and societies to have more connections with the wider world, not shutting off the internet or at-tacking embassies” is the way to better life, she said.

“Extremists around the world are working hard to drive us apart,” Clinton warned. “All of us need to stand together to re-sist these forces and to support democratic transitions under way in North Africa and the Middle East.”

The Obama administration has been grasping for ways to try to tamp down the fury over the video, especially in Pakistan, where some of the most intense and sustained protests have been held. The U.S. Embassy in Is-lamabad released public-service advertisements showing President Barack Obama and Clinton de-nouncing the film.

Compounding the difficulty, Pakistan’s railways minister of-fered $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of the film. The Pakistani government disavowed the bounty on Monday, just hours before Clinton met President Asif Ali Zardari.

“We very much appreciate the strong response of your govern-ment,” Clinton told Zardari. Zard-ari replied: “It’s been a difficult time for all of us.”

SEOUL — North Korea has stopped construction on a launch pad where intercontinental-range rockets could be tested, an interruption possibly due to heavy rains and that could stall completion up to two years, according to an analysis of new satellite imagery.

While Albert Einstein’s genius isn’t included, an exclusive iPad application launched Tuesday promises to make detailed images of his brain more accessible to sci-entists than ever before. Teachers, students and anyone who’s curious also can get a look.

A medical museum under devel-opment in Chicago obtained fund-ing to scan and digitize nearly 350 fragile and priceless slides made from slices of Einstein’s brain after his death in 1955. The application will allow researchers and novices to peer into the eccentric Nobel winner’s brain as if they were look-ing through a microscope.

they’ll discover,” said Steve Land-ers, a consultant for the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago who designed the app. “I’d like to think Einstein would have been excited.” After Einstein died, a pathologist named Thomas Harvey performed an autopsy, removing the great man’s brain

in hopes that future researchers could discover the secrets behind his genius.

Harvey gave samples to re-searchers and collaborated on a 1999 study published in the Lan-cet. That study showed a region of Einstein’s brain — the parietal lobe — was 15 percent wider than normal. The parietal lobe is important to the understanding of math, language and spatial rela-tionships.

The new iPad app may allow researchers to dig even deeper by looking for brain regions where the neurons are more densely connected than normal, said Dr. Phillip Epstein, a Chicago-area neuroscientist and consultant for the museum.

But because the tissue was preserved before modern imag-

where in Einstein’s brain each slide originated. Although the new app organizes the slides into general

brain regions, it doesn’t map them with precision to an anatomical model.

“They didn’t have MRI. We don’t have a three-dimensional model of the brain of Einstein, so we don’t know where the samples were taken from,” said researcher Jacopo Annese of the Brain Obser-vatory at the University of Califor-nia, San Diego. What’s more, the 1-inch-by-3-inch Einstein slides on the app represent only a fraction of the entire brain, Annese said.

Annese has preserved and digi-tized another famous brain, that of Henry Molaison, who died in 2008 after living for decades with pro-found amnesia. Known as “H.M.” in scientific studies, Molaison participated during his life in re-search that revealed new insights on learning and memory.

A searchable website with im-ages of more than 2,400 slides of Molaison’s entire brain will be available to the public in Decem-ber, Annese said.

NEW YORK — People nervously waiting around in New York City hospitals for loved ones to come out of surgery can’t smoke. In a few months from now, they can’t have a supersized fast-food soda. And soon, they won’t even be able to get a candy bar out of the vending machine or a piece of fried chicken from the cafeteria.

In one of his latest health campaigns, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is aiming to banish sugary and fatty foods from both public and private hospitals.

In recent years, the city’s 15 public hospitals have cut calories in patients’ meals and restricted the sale of sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks at vending machines. But now the city is tackling hospital cafeteria food, too. And the Healthy Hospital Food Initiative is expanding its reach: In the past year, 16 private hospitals have signed on.

Earlier this month, the city moved to ban the sale of big sodas and other sugary drinks at fast-food restaurants and theaters, beginning in March. Crit-ics say the hospital initiative is yet another sign that Bloomberg is running a “nanny state,” even though the guidelines are voluntary and other cities — including Boston — have undertaken similar efforts.

Hospitals say it would be hypocritical of them to serve unhealthy food to patients who are often suffering from obesity and other health problems.

“If there’s any place that should not allow smoking or try to make you eat healthy, you would think it’d be the hospitals,” Bloomberg said Monday. “We’re doing what we should do and you’ll see, I think, most of the private hospitals go along with it.”

The cafeteria crackdown will ban deep fryers, make leafy green salads a mandatory option and allow only healthy snacks to be stocked near the cafeteria entrance and at cash registers. At least half of all sandwiches and salads must be made or served with whole grains. Half-size sandwich por-tions must be available for sale.

“People sometimes right now don’t have healthy options,” said Christine Curtis, the city Health Department’s director of nutrition strategy. “So you are there at 2 in the morning and maybe your only choice is soda and chips.”

“Love my Full House family,” Bar-ber tweeted with the above snapshot of the cast. And it looks like the cast also had a lot of run reliving the ‘90s. “A Little @NKOTB Dance Party, Any-

Stamos took it one step further with video evidence of Barber and Bure sing-ing New Kids on the Block’s hit Step By Step.

AMANDA Bynes and Lindsay Lohan have a lot more in common than they think. The “What I Like About You” actress fled Los Angeles to New York City over the weekend, a few weeks after the “Mean Girls” star – who called out Bynes for getting off easy in her hit-and-run cases – did the same. Bynes, who missed a hear-ing regarding her suspended license in L.A. on Monday, was spotted in midtown Manhattan on Saturday “aim-lessly wandering around for hours,” an eyewitness tells TMZ, which also has a photo of her carrying shopping bags.

In an interview with People maga-zine last week, Bynes revealed that she

planned on moving to the Big Apple to pursue a career in fashion now that she is “retired” from acting. TMZ adds that the 26-year-old has told friends that she has no plans to return to L.A., even though her parents have just moved there from Texas to be closer to their troubled daughter.

When Bynes was caught driving on a suspended license on September 16 after police witnessed her aimlessly driving around a valet area of Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, at 8 a.m., it’s unclear if she was there to take a flight. Approximately 90 minutes later, she exited the airport and was pulled over yet again by police … and that time, they impounded her vehicle.

Let’s hope Bynes doesn’t join forces with Lohan in NYC. In the wee hours last Wednesday, the “Liz & Dick” actress was arrested for hit-and-run – something Bynes knows a thing or two about – as she pulled into the Dream Hotel for a night of partying.
