LIFE is on hold for a 22yearold Ashdown orphan who, after completing his Bcom degree last year, cannotget his results as he owes the University of KwaZulu

Natal R 22 000.As a result, Vuyani Dlamini is appealing for a good

Samaritan to help him pay his outstanding fees as he believesthat it is hindering him from securing a job. Despite havingapplied for jobs, he says the only response he ever gets is that

he failed to include his results. He has already paid R11 000 off his debt after

getting a job as an examination assistantfor the Department of Education last

year.To make ends meet, he

works as a taxi driveroccasionally to support his

grandmother.Dlamini’s plight was

highlighted by theWitness four years

ago after he had acedhis matric with five

distinctions, but hehad no money tofurther hisstudies.

Out of hisown pocket,UKZN’s chief

vicechancellorMalegapuru Makgoba

paid the registrationfees for Dlamini. After his

a rticle was published, hewas able to get fundingfrom the university, however it was not afully fledged bursary.

“I was told that itwas not a fully fledgedbursary. They justhelped students inneed as long as theycould. Unfortunately, they were not able tocontinue paying thefees, and I was left withR33 000 debt.

I was able to use theexcess funds from theprevious year to buytextbooks. I am gratefulto Dr Makgoba forchanging my lifebecause I would nothave even studied if itweren’t for him.”

He said despiteapproaching variousbusinessmen aroundthe city, it has been tono avail as they told himthey are alreadysupporting a lot ofstudents.

“I appeal to anyonewho can help me finishoff my debt so that I canget my results.Sometimes I getcomments from peopleasking whether I wasreally at school.

I just feel like a loser, living the life I thoughtI had escaped.” Peoplewilling to help cancontact Dlamini at078 619 5764

ECHOMsane needs recognition

I WRITE this letter with great concern and confusion as towhy Saul Msane, one of the African National Congressfounders and 1913 Land Act Resistance activist, is lessrecognised.

He is also less publicised than Moses Mabhida, J.L. Dube,Albert Luthuli, Solomon Plaaitjie and others.

Why is our democratic government partial and favouring certain individual’s heritage and history and not theothers?

Do they work according to who you are, and what theywill benefit? They have a number of heritage departmentsand one would have hoped that they would do the rightresearchtoproducethecorrecthistoricalfacts.Thiscanonlybe ignored if they want to achieve their own interests.

MsaneTribeHeritageTrustwishestoinitiateamemoriallecture in commemoration of Mr Saul Msane, who was alsoonce SecretaryGeneral of the ANC from 1917 to 1919, incollaboration with Ilanga Newspaper.

Msane is our great grandfather, human rights activistfor all South Africans, born in Edendale Mission,Pietermaritzburg in 1856. He is the one, among other earlypolitical figures, who played a very pivotal role in theliberation struggle for the South African natives during the18th century.

However, he is less recognised and betrayed by his ownpolitical party that he founded and the current democraticgovernment. He was a prominent member of the WesleyanMethodist Church in Pietermaritzburg. As a clan, we wishto have the ANC West Rand branch and the heritage historydepartment of UKZN, and other universities, to come onboard and join forces with us to initiate a Saul MsaneMemorial Lecture.

Stakeholders will include, among others, the NationalDepartment of Arts And Culture, Saul Msane

Region African National Congress, National HeritageCouncil, KZN Premier’s Office and the Legislature,Umgungundlovu District Municipality and others thatmight be interested.

Education is not a luxury, it’s a rightLISA ELLIS

IN the week of 3 to 7 November 2014, Youth for Christ/KZN will take to the streets in Pietermaritzburg andDurban distributing flyers on our educational campaign.

It’s a campaign that calls for the support ofcorporates, scholars, students, principals, teachers, parents and working adults.

We need the partnership from corporates whofund education through their Corporate SocialInvestment division. Financial donations from thosewho are able and willing to invest financially.Scholars to develop a mindset of sharing, making itpossible for all to have the necessary resources toattend school.

Scholars can donate their school uniform that isnot branded, specifically white shirts, grey trousers, school shoes etc.

Children we serve in rural areas walk long

distances to and from school. One pair of schoolshoes seldom lasts six months.

Being able to give a child a pair of school shoeswhen they have walked the soles off the ones theyhave would be incredible, and scholars can make thispossible by sharing.

We need the principals and the teachers tocooperate and reinforce this within the schools.

Donations can be dropped off at YFC offices at1 Alan Paton Avenue, Scottsville, above BodyDynamics Gym.

All set for Greater Edendalerace next weekend

MARITZBURG road runners, and thosefrom surrounding areas, will be outto win the Greater Edendale 10km

Race and fun run coming up next weekend. The event, on 16 November, is hosted

annually by the Comrades MarathonAssociation (CMA) as part of its corporatesocial investment initiative.

The run starts at the FNB WadleyStadium in Georgetown.

“In line with the success of last year’sevent, theeighthrunningofthismuchlovedrace promises to be another funfilled dayfor the community of Edendale andsurrounds.

“With nearly 2000 participants last year, the organisers have vowed to pull out all thestops to ensure a day of fun for kids andgrownups alike,” said the CMA in a pressrelease.

The association said that prize moneytotalling nearly R15 000 is up for grabs, witha generous first prize of R2 500 for the firstman and first woman respectively. The firstthree walkers over the finish line for both themen’s and women’s race will also be rewarded.

“Additionally, every finisher will takehome a medal and all 10km runners willreceive an Edendale 10km race Tshirt,” saidthe release.

The CMA said local school teachers haveshown a heightened sense of optimism for

the event, knowing full well the power ofsuch events in uniting communities and promoting civic pride.

In this respect, the schools challenge willbe a continued feature of the race in whichschools compete with each other for the twomain ‘school prizes’.

Schools are encouraged to get theirpupils to participate in the fun run. The firsttwoschoolswiththemostfinisherswilleachwalk away with a grand prize comprising ofdigital equipment. Success is notan accidentFOOTBALL people in this country mustcome to terms with the reality. Althoughhardworkiskeytoanysuccess, theindispensable requirement for hard work is selfdiscipline.

There is a tendency in most of us to cutcorners and take the easy way. We have failed to build proper junior and youth structures. We are trying to cut corners withinitiatives like Diski league, under21 rule inSAB and Motsepe leagues.

It is like coming up with a model that triesto marry both high school and university education. Life does not allow us to jumpstages. It is step by step. Age cheating is rife, mainly because there are no properstructures for football.

Success is not an accident. Failure is notan accident either. You fail if you do not dowhat successful people do. We are failingpresently because of failure to learn fromother successful football nations. SouthAfrican football leaders, coaches and players must understand the importance of paying the price for success.

Presently, people stand up for administrative positions in order to enjoy thebenefits, such as free tickets for international matches, travelling business class, sleeping and dining in five star hotels.

There are also many coaches thatbecomeactiveduringtheeventse.g.municipality tournaments, Safa tournaments etc.Training and coaching of players is a dailyactivity. Players can only get better withconsistently good training. Certificates do

not train the players. It is also true that people should learn

from experts.Football is not progressing because we

lack discipline to improve ourselves. A lot ofus survive on past reputations. We need tocontinuously seek ideas and advice fromother experts in our fields. We need to become lifelong students of our crafts. I

think it is also about time that peopletook responsibility for their futures. There isa culture in South Africa that someone elseshould take responsibility for your life. Thereis also a direct relationship between theamount of control you feel you have andhow positive you feel. We have a choice tomake i.e. either make excuses or progress.

Young South African footballers need tocome to terms with their situation i.e. lackof facilities, poor coaching, poorly administered leagues at local, district and provinciallevels. They need to take responsibility fortheir futures. Whining and complaining isnot going to help them become excellentfootballers. Discipline and training will getyou closer to your dreams. We have a responsibility as individuals to make adifference in our lives. I find it difficult tounderstand when a young footballer carries

a top of the range cellphone and yet doesnot have a ball and football boots. Our priorities are “deur mekaar” as Afrikaans peoplesay. We need to focus on important things.

South African future footballers shouldlearn that at junior level everyone is equal. The chances to get to the top depend whereone spends most of his time. If cell phonesand computer games are a priority, weshould not complain when footballers fromother part of this continent succeed internationally. You do not become exceptional because of high tech equipment. The mindsetof an individual towards work and the abilityto listen and learn are some of the criticalingredients.

As we said at the beginning, if localyoungsters want to become top footballers, they must copy the habits of the presentgreat footballers.

The majority of youngsters are writingexams now. It is crazy that some of the football leagues are starting during this period.I doubt if many people in football leadershiphave sons and daughters playing club football. We are making the game antieducation. The majority of parents are not supporting our game because of poor planning. We seem to not have the interests of theplayers in mind when planning these activities.

Patriotism is the term that is commonlyused by both the football leaders and ordinary supporters. We expect players to putthe interests of the country first. Is scheduling leagues at exam times a sign of patriotism? Is subjecting young footballers to playin dusty, rocky and unmarked fields a patriotic gesture?

Let us get the basic things correctly.Unzima lo mthwalo!

MZANSI soccer followers will thisweekend try to forget about thedark cloudwhich hung over the

country’s sport the whole of last week, andconcentrateontheTelkomKnockoutfixtures.

Late last week, the Premier SoccerLeague had confirmed the 2014/15TelkomKnockout(TKO)semi-finaldates,venues and kick-off times.

The much talked about match will bethe first semi-final between the favour-ites Orlando Pirates and SuperSport

United at the Orlando Stadium onSaturday night at 8.15pm.

The question that has been asked bymany soccer lovers and pundits iswhether themighty sea robbers arenowmentally fit after losing their ever-greengoalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwarecently.

The other question is who will takeover the captaincy and who will claimMeyiwa’s place between the goals.

Pirates former captain and actingteammanager Lucky Lekgwati says that

to find a captain in the team is not aproblem, because there are a lot ofpotential leaders in the current squad.Butwhat is important is to keep the teamspirit, unity and focus on playing.

He agrees that players went througha lot but said that they nowneed to standup and make Meyiwa proud.

“The whole team suffered and wewere affected big time. But this is achance to make Senzo happy in hisabsence by taking over the baton andrunning the race to victory. To find anew

captain is not a problemat all. Happy Je-le, Ace Manyisa and SiyabongaSangweni are all capable,” said Lekgwa-ti.

Pirates head coach VladimirVermezovic is likely to go with BrightonMhlongototakeoverfromMeyiwaaheadof Philani Zikalala and Ntando Nkala.

The second semi-final will be at theRoyal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, where defending TKO champions,Platinum Stars will host Mamelodi Sun-downs on Sunday. - Jerry Barnes.
