VOX POP “The divorce came at the right time asboth unions need to go back to thedrawing board and reassess themselves. They need to reassesswhether they are still fighting forworkers' rights or if it is aboutpower struggles. The divorce willallow both these unions toreflect on what they are reallyabout."
Busisiwe Mbokazi
"Right now, both these unions are looking attheir own interests and have forgotten theinterests of the workers. This separation will givethem time to look back on what is important. On the other side, it is wrong as theirseparation was not the view of the wholemembership. This decision is going topromote factionalism and division andwill kill the relevance of the tripartitealliance.
Mammie Zondi
"The divorce between these twounions is something that wasforeseen a few years ago, takinginto account the division betweentheir leaders. However it is not theright move because Numsa has somany members who are also apart of Cosatu. This will have animpact on membership."
Thokozani Shelembe
"This separation will have a badimpact on our economy becauseour country is already facinga disruptive labour environment because unions arecompeting against oneanother. Both may beleft with no bargaining power and lessmembership."
Nokuthula Mpanza
FOLLOWING a series of problems andconsultations, the Congress of SouthAfrican Trade Unions (Cosatu) last weekcut ties with the National Union ofMetalworkers (Numsa). NOKULUNGANGOBESE spoke to city residents to findout how they feel about this decision. Asit stands, Cosatu has given Numsa 30 daysto appeal against its expulsion.
Should Numsa beseparated from Cosatu?

Msunduzi Municipalityspokesperson Thobeka Mafum-batha said that they are busy withall the contractors to give them theprogramme to reinstate all thework done in the CBD.
“The problem with all thisconstruction is that there was no

“We are gathering all theinformation street by street to findout who did the work from theroads department,” saidMafumbatha.
She added that the projectcurrently being carried out inLangalibalele Street is done by themunicipality, and that a meetingwas due to take place last weekFridayon theupdateof theproject.

Groen Sebenza IndabaTHE 30 Groen Sebenza interns
from Wildlands attended anIndaba at Somkhanda Game
Reserve recently. The role of Wildlands is to incubate
pioneers into the environmental sectorby addressing priority skills shortagesand giving them the mentorshipand training they need to developthemselves further before entering
the competitive South African jobmarket.
This Indaba was an extension ofsuch programmes and activities aimedat upskilling and preparing these youngpeople for the working world.
The uBuntu Earth team of Wildlandsfacilitated this Indaba by runningactivities in which pioneers couldshare their learning and experiences
over the past year, and inspire andmotivate each other for the roadahead.
The uBuntu Earth departments’fundamental emphasis is on buildingcapacity and enabling this groupto ‘progress through the system’ ormove on to other green jobs andentrepreneurial enterprises in thefuture.

Women more obesethan men in SANOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]
DURING National Obesity week last month, the MEC forHealth, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, raised his concerns aboutstatistics released by the World Health Organization (WHO)that at least 2.8million adults around the globe die each yearas a result of being overweight or obese.
He said already in South Africa, 66% of women and 33%of men are overweight.
Dhlomo said that his department is observing an increaseofrelativelyyoungpeoplesufferingfromhighbloodpressure, coronary heart diseases, diabetes and several types ofcancers.
“Mostoftheseconditionsareself-madeastheycomeaboutthrough what people eat, drink and the choice they make ofnot engaging in physical exercise,” he said.
Local registereddieticianLindelwaZimusaid that obesitycan be attributed to more than one factor. Urbanisation hasresulted in increased exposure to fast foods and restaurantsto the public, she said. She added that obesity can beprevented by educating the public about the diseasesassociated with obesity.
“The public needs to know that obesity can result innon-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertensionand cardiovascular disease. Social media can help createawarenessandeducate thepublic.TheDepartmentofHealthhasalsorolledouttelevisionadvertsthatencouragethepublicto make healthy choices. The South African Food baseddietary guidelines, serving as a guideline on healthy eating, canbe followedorapplied toall personsabove theageof five.
“Portion control is a very important aspect in preventingobesity. For example, on a standard plate, vegetables shouldmake up half of the plate (two handfuls), starchy food shouldbe a clenched fist size (1/4 of a plate) and protein should bethe size of the palm of your hand (1/4 of a plate). Fats shouldbe one teaspoon per person in the household or the size ofthe tip of the thumb,” she said.
Foods that can cause obesity are:•Highfat, highsugarandhighsaltfoodssuchaspies, chips,
biscuits, sweets and also refined carbohydrates.• Take-aways or fast foods should also be avoided as they
are high-fat, high sugar or high salt.

ISIQALO Early Child Development (ECD) Centre inFrance, Phase Four was donated educationalmaterials and furniture last Wednesday.
This was an initiative by Primedia who sponsoredthe materials after the centre was identified as onethat desperately needed funding.

The owner of the crèche, Nobuhle Zondi, said itall came as a surprise.
“Ward councilor Bongani Dlomo came to usmonths ago and informed us that the MsunduziMunicipality was looking for a crèche that was notfunded. He gave us some application forms to fill inand that is what we did.
“It was early this week when we received a callfrom Primedia saying that they were introduced tous by the Msunduzi Municipality. They informed usthat they would supply us with some educationalmaterial and furniture. Before the event onWednesday, municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi cameand gave us mattresses for the children to sleep on.They used to sleep on blankets.

The announcement on Wednesday, 12 Novembercame a week after the pair pledged to raise the fueleconomy of their vehicles by 25% by 2020 to meetemissions regulations in the U.S. and Europe and athome in South Korea.
It also followed an announcement on Tuesday 11November that the pair would buy back R6 billionworth of shares in what was widely regarded as anattempt to appease investors angered by a R100billion bid for property for new headquarters.
Analyst Yim Eunyoung of Samsung Securities said:"Investors have complained about Hyundai's lack of
shareholderfriendly policies and communicationabout its vision, especially after the land deal.
"Today's announcement seems to be part of itsefforts to soothe shareholders and better communicate with the market."
Shares of Hyundai have fallen 25% in 2014, buthave risen over 17% since hitting a more than fouryear low on November 5. Kia stock has declined 0.9%while the benchmark index has lost 2.4%.

The truth is still the truth
MANY people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apolo
gise for being correct or for being years ahead of yourtime.
“If you are right and you know it, speak your mind.Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still thetruth.” Gandhi.
We still maintain that South African football willremain in the doldrums if leaders persist to run awayfrom the truth. The truth is that when you copy, youremain just that, a copy of someone else. A copy alsostill needs to be certified in order to be accepted asa true copy. Technical ignorance among many peoplein top administrative positions is not helping the local game.
The sooner football fall in the hands of “real”football people, the better. This is the truth thatmany of us are scared to admit. The damage causedby negative foreign influences will take many yearsto remove. It is better to starve than being fed poison. The challenge with this is that the problem magnifieswhen poison has been swallowed.
The English philosophy has destroyed SouthAfrican talent. Presently, our game is characterisedby long balls into the opposition box the so called“skop en donner.”
One just wonders how our people allow the socalled ‘Liverpool way’ of playing to be taught toSouth African children. What has this institutionachieved in world football over the past decade?Presently, they have spent a fortune buying Englishplayers the players who are average compared tofootballers from other cultures.
The English people have had more than four commissions to try and find out solutions to their problems. English football is spending about R18 billiona year on academies. They still have to show successfor this kind of investment after two decades. We areallowing ourselves to be a dumping site for failedideas.
The time has come for real patriots to resist thesemoneymaking schemes. The history will judge usharshly for having failed the local football talent.

Local netball teamready for the SalgaGamesMANAGEMENT of the uMgungundlovu andDistrict Netball Association have expressedconfidence in the preparations for the up comingSouth African Local Government Association(Salga) Games, in spite of rumoured pitfalls.
The local netball squadwill be one of the teamstorepresentuMgungundlovuDistrictMunicipalityat the annual Salga Games in different codes ofsport.
It has been rumoured that the netball teamhasfound it difficult to get all the players together fortraining at the central venue Westmore Parkbecause of a lack of transportation.
This week a source said that at the moment, preparations are not going smoothly.
“The reality is that players who makeuMgungundlovu are coming from different areaslike Camperdown, Vulindlela, Richmond andother outlying areas. It’s a bigmission to get themtogether because some of the children are notprovided with transport.
“If we really need all these players together, everyday and on time, the team needs funds fortransportation. Otherwise the preparationswon’tgowell andwewon’t be prepared for the Games,”said the source.
The uMgungundlovu and District NetballAssociation President Matoli “Torish” Nsele saidthat preparations started on a positive note, although there were a couple of challenges. Sheinsisted that there is no crisis.
“We started training and so far, things arelooking good. There is no crisis at all and it’s justnormalchallengesthatgowithpreparationseveryyear,” said Nsele.
Department of Sports and Recreation districtmanager Busi Nkomo admitted that there were acouple of testing moments. She said that they arejust for “now” and things were under control.
“As far as we are concerned things are goingwell. The federation is on the right track, ourdepartment is hands on and everything is undercontrol. In sport, we alwaysworkwith a couple ofchallenges but we always overcome them,” saidNkomo.
