The employees, who spoke to Echo but did not want to be identified, said that between December and January this year, five cars were stolen from the dealership’s showroom floor. They said that since the incident, theyliveinfearofbeingthenextpolice victim, as they are taken in one by one for questioning. “We cannot even do our work properly because policemen come on a regular basis, and our biggest concern is who will be the next victim to be beaten by them. Two weeks ago, two employees who were taken for questioning came back with injuries, with one of them being severely beat- en. The other one was punched in his face and one was beaten all over his body while they covered his face,” said another employee. They also allege that polygraph tests that were conducted only target- ed certain employees instead of focusing on everyone. The employees said that their ordeal started in December last year after four cars that had been delivered went missing in two consecutive weeks. This year again, another car went missing. “We are only responsible for sign- ing that cars have been delivered, and ensuring that everything that is required is there. We do not have con- trol of what happens at the ware- house where they are parked. What is even more confusing is that there is video footage of cars being delivered, but the CCTV does not show anything when they are taken from the dealer- ship. We are not against police doing their work, but we are worried about the manner that they have chosen to conduct their investigation,” said an employee. SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said police are inves- tigating two cases of assault, and no members have been arrested. “These are serious allegations against members of the SAPS and will have to be substantiated and thor- oughly investigated. Once the investi- gationhasbeenfinalised, thecasewill be handed over to the senior public prosecutor for a decision, and pend- ing the outcome, a departmental investigation will be instituted. No ar- rests have been made regarding the theft of the motor vehicles at Hyundai”. Operations director of Hyundai in KZN, Gideon van Rensburg, said that they are aware of the allegations, and they have advised employees to lay a charge with the South African Police Services. “The dealership cannot take the law into its own hands. The theft is the subject of police investiga- tion, which must run its cause.” If you’ve got the looks and attitude to be the face for Africa’s largest marine theme park, enter this year’s exciting Mr, Miss and Junior Miss uShaka Marine World competition. “Because we are celebrating our birthday and a decade of seaside fun, we’re splashing out with fantastic specials and cool events and our annual pag- eant is going to be bigger and better than ever,” said the orgainers in a press release. uShaka Marine World is offering prizes to the value of R50 000, which include over R25 000 cash, cruises on the MSC opera, a photographic portfolio, as well as public relations support from S&A Marketing. CardskimmingECHO REPORTER>>[email protected]

CARD skimming has beenidentified as one of thethreats in the card fraud

environment which has contrib-uted enormously to counterfeitcard fraud.

Figures on card fraud by theSouth African Banking Informa-tion Centre (Sabric) haverevealed that about 1 281 hand-heldskimmingdeviceshavebeenrecovered by investigators since2005, of which 129 were recov-ered last year up to endSeptember. Sabric’s media liai-son officer, Kanyisa Ndyondya, said that Gauteng has beenhigh-lighted as the province in whichthis criminal modus operandi ismost popular.

“Last year, investigatorsrecovered 57 skimming devicesin the province alone. This has

highlightedthedepthoftheprob-lem and, as Sabric, we continu-ouslywarnbank customers to bewaryofcardskimmersandneverto let their card out of their sightwhen performing transactions”said Sabric CEO, Kalyani Pillay.

Cards can be skimmed atATMs or at points of sale. Sabricwants to emphasize the impor-tance of never accepting anyassistance from anybody at theATM and also of shielding thekeypadwithyourfreehandwheninserting the pin number.

“Bank customers who are go-ing to bemaking use of the inter-net to do their shopping, shouldmake use of 3Dsecure productsandwebsites that support them,”said Pillay.

Explaining what the 3Dsecure is, she said it is anauthen-tication service that allows onlythe cardholder to use the card. Itis also called Verified by Visa orMasterCard Secure Code, sheadded.

“It helps online merchantsand banks know when it is thecardholder that is shoppingonline. It also allows the card-holder to enter an additionalpassword or PIN to verify the

legitimacyofthepurchase.Whenshopping online, only placeorders with the card on a securewebsite, and do not send e-mailsthat quote the card number orexpiry date,” said Pillay.

Bank customers are advisedto adhere to the following tips:

* If you are disturbed or inter-fered with whilst transacting atthe ATM, it is possible that yourcard may be skimmed by beingremoved and replaced back intothe ATM without your knowl-edge. Cancel the transactionandimmediately report the incidentusing your bank’s Stop Card tollfree number which is displayedonallATMsaswell ason thebackof your bank card.

* Know what your ATM lookslikesothatyouareabletoidentifyany foreignobjects attached to it.

*Never let the cardout of yoursight when making payments.

* If you have debit, cheque orcredit cards, don’t choose thesame PIN for all of them. If youlose one, the others will be safe.

* Keep your transaction slipsand check them against yourstatement to spot any suspicioustransactions and query themimmediately.

NOKULUNGA NGOBESE>>[email protected]

AS part of an annual campaign, PinkDrive, a breast-cancer public benefitorganisation, on Friday hosted a

breast-cancer awareness campaign at theMfenendala community hall in Sobantu.

“If the government ends up agreeingto this request they would be saving a lot of lives. Dagga is notlegal but people smoke it already. Idon’t know what government wouldbenefit from legalising it but if thatis done to save lives, I think theyshould not think twice about it.”

Tich Hove

“It’s a natural herb that has beenused for decades. If there has beenresearch confirming that it couldhelp cancer patients, it should belegalised (Mavana). We have ourown izinyanga using the herb.(Duma).”

Yolanda Mavana andNompilo Duma

“Dagga doesn’t affect anyone andhas been used since the olden days. Those who use it would tell youthat the herb doesn’t harm andturn people into hobos. If there is aneed to legalise the

herb thenthe governmentshoulddo

that.”

“If they legalise it, it shouldbe accessed by the

patients only. Thereshould be a limit asto who uses it andhow. We don’t wantto see people dying.

If the herb is aprescription that can

help cancer patients, then they

should permit theuse of it butonly to thepatients.”

PRESIDENT Zuma has instructed Health MinisterAaron Motsoaledi to look into decriminalisingdagga for medical use for those who need it. Thisfollowed IFP MP Mario Oriani Ambrosini’s impassioned pleas to Zuma and government last Thursday. Ambrosini told Parliament that he has beenusing dagga illegally after he was diagnosed withcancer of the lungs and pleaded that it be allowedto be used by cancer sufferers and other who needits medicinal properties. People on the streetsshared their view about the matter withNOMPENDULO NGUBANE.

Nhlakanipho "Crooger"Mdunge

“No one wants to see people dyingfrom cancer. If the herb can assist, the government should legalise it. Isupport the idea of legalising it. Itwould mean that many lives wouldbe saved.”

INDLELA osekukhulunywa ngayongobuhle bensangu namhlanje kubasengathi umthunzi wezinkukhu lonainto entsha sha.

Phelabaningi,okukhonaamaras-ta kubo, abebelokhubethi ayivunyel-we ukusetshenziswa yilabo abayid-ingayokulelikodwaimizamoyaboih-luleke.

Kodwa manje sekuqhamukeumuntu oyedwa nje oyilungu lePha-lamende uMnu. Mario Ambrosini

wazikhalela kuMengameli Jacob Zu-ma noHulumeni wakhe ecela yenanabanye bavunyelwe ukuzilaphangayo.

Phela uMnu Ambrosini lona oy-ilungu le-IFPePhalamendeuzikhale-la nje uphethwe umdlavuza ongaj-wayelekile wephaphu kanti uthiuseyisebenzisile insangungokungemthetho, nokuba usaphilananamhlanje.

UNgqongqoshe uLindiwe Sisulu

utshele iPhalamende ukuthi bazol-ubhekisisa loludaba kanti noMen-gameli naye uhambe emazwini afa-nayo lapho esephendula imibizoelandela inkulumo yakhe ebibhek-iswe esizweni muva nje.

Into enhleimpelalenaabayenzile, akufanele kuphume ngisho owodwaumphefumulo uma kukhona indlelayokuthi basize.

Kodwa ke umbuzo ofika kwaban-ingi uthi ukube nje bekungumuntu-

kazanaubeceleukuzokhulumaePha-lamende ngalolu daba ubezo-vunyelwa yini.

Uma evunyeliwe bekungenzekaahlekwe nje kube sengathi uku-cabanga kwakhe kulawulwa yikhonjalo ukusebenzisa umthunziwezinkukhu lo.

Ngabe kufanele kuze kugule ilun-gu lePhalamende noma usaziwayokuyimaizintozibhekisiswaukuthizi-siza ngempela?

SESIPHINDE sahlangana bafundi bethuabahle. Sagcinana ngesikhathi sixoxa nge‘minsinsila namadilozi’. Nansi ke indabaengihluphayo kulezi zinsuku.

Ngikhathazwa abantu abathandaukuzikhukhumeza.

Ngiyathanda ukuhlala nabantu abahlukahlukene. Angikhethi bala lamuntu. Angiyi ngokuthi umuntu uphetheni esandlenikodwa isizathu sami ukuthi ngifundeokuningi kubo bonke abantu.

Kunale nto ethanda ukuba nzima futhiengingayazi nokuthi isukaphi. Ngizobhekisa kakhulu kwabansundu ngoba ngiyaziukuthi ngizokhuluma ngizwakale.

Ngihlushwa yilolu daba lokuzikhukhumeza noma lokuziphakamisa.

Umuntu unele athole isikhundla esingconywana emsebenzini noma emphakathini umbone esehambela phezulu.Angazi kuke kuthini emqondweni womuntu uma esebukela abanye abantu phansienze sengathi uthole isikhundla sokubangumengameli wezwe lonke, ekubenikwasayena uMnu. Jacob Zuma engaziphakamisi.

Ubone umuntu wakhona engasakwazingisho ukubingelela, kodwa ebe ehlala nabanye abasebenzi edla nabo, encokolanabo, kodwa nje inkinga iqale uma esenyuselwe esikhundleni esithe thuthu.

Omunye uze ahambele phezulu, abanye abantu ababukise okwamanzi okupheka uphuthu. Lo mkhuba ufana nse nomuntu okuthi kade ehlalisene kahle nomphakathi jikelele elokishini, anele abenemali aqale ukuba nehlo lokukhetha ub

hontshisi. Laphoke usuke engasathintwaesenemali edida usathane. La ‘majita’akhule nawo elokshini, angabe esazihlanganisa nawo ngoba usehlala esilungwini, usehamba ngezimoto eziphambili.

Anginayo inkinga nomuntu ohlala esilungwini ngoba uhulumeni wentandoyeningi wavula amathuba okuthi umuntuahlalenomayikuphilaphoethandakhona, aphile impilo ayithandayo, inqobo nje umaenamandla.

Inselelo iba sekuzithwaleni komuntu, ajike ngokuphazima kweso, kujike ngishonendlela akhuluma ngayo. Uma evakashele elokishini angabe esahlala ngishonama ‘jita’ akhula ehlala nawo. Usekhuluma ulimi olukhombisa ukuthi yena unemali, usecwasa kwasani ngisho nendlela‘amajita’ agqoka ngayo, akhohlwe ukuthinaye zolo lokhu, ubezishayela ngesikhindinophaqa.

Uyena lo obeziphuzela unemenayidiosebhodleleni ngomlomo kungabindabazalutho, kodwa manje useziphuzela ikanilejuice nge ‘straw’ uma eselokishini. Ngiyaninxusa bantu bakithi, ake sishintshe indlela esenza ngayo. Angikholwa ukuthi iyona ndlela okhokho bethu abasifundisangayo le. Ngisho nomlungu oyisicebiakayenzi le nto yokuziphakamisa. Nomaehamba emgwaqeni ngeke uzitshele uku

thi uyisigwili ngenxa yokuthi akazikhukhumezi.

Asiyeke ukucwasana siyisizwe esimnyama. Masingazi phakamisi. Esikhundlenisalokho masifukulane sibambisane ngobalokho kuzokwakha isizwe esimnyama esibumbene, nesinenhlonipho, ukuze nenzinye izinhlanga zisihloniphe. Ningixolelebafundi uma kukhona othintekile kuloludaba kodwa eyakoKhabazela ibibeka umbono wayo njengoba nawe mfundi unemvume yokuphawula ngalolu daba. MK veteransdeserve respectwithin the ANC>> These freedom fighters are now treated contemptuously“BUT why are we depriving

MK veterans of thereverence they deserve?”

lamented an old man clad in an ANCT-shirt, in the taxi from Dambuza totown.

“Or is it because our ex-combat-ants are ravaged by poverty that wefind it hard to respect them?”

“YouseeBab’Zulu,”amiddle-agedman sitting next to the old manmused, “the dignity of MK veteranscan only be restored by educatingpeople about the pivotal role thatUmkhonto weSizwe played in theliberation struggle.”

“ThatisnotenoughVusi,”Bab’Zu-lusplutteredexasperatedly,“weneedto rid ourselves of this disgustingnonsensical tendency of marginalis-ing our soldiers in the organisation. The ANCmembers across the board, let alone the leadership, need to holdourex-guerillasinhighesteembeforewe could expect the mainstreamsocietytopayhomagetothem.Other-wise the imageof thewholeorganisa-tion would be - if not already -tarnished.”

This preceding dialogue gives usan abundant clarity on how peoplefeel about the predicament of MK

veterans.These freedom fighters are now

treatedcontemptuously,evenbyANCleaderswhoaresupposedtobeexem-plary in terms of treating them withdignity. The ANC is now throngedwith ignoramuses who are notconversant with its literature, whichhasandcontinuestobreedanembar-rassing ignorance regarding MK.Doesn’t this explain why you wouldfind theveteransbeingpatronisedbythese opportunist newcomers whojoined the organisation after 1994when it was fashionable to do so?

WhentheANCreluctantlydecidedto formUmkhontowe Sizwe in 1961,due to the intransigence of the whiteregime to relinquish oppression, theaimwastoescalatethestruggleofthisveryANCtoliberatethiscountryfromthe ravages of apartheid.

But what is baffling and appallingis that these people who call them-selves loyal and disciplined ANCmembers are the ones who discountMK veterans, acting as if the estab-

lishment of MK was frivolous. Theveterans have become Cinderellas inthe organisation.

The branch is themost importantsphere of any political force, for it isclosest to the rank and file. I doubt ifall branch executive committees(BECs) of the ANC are well versed intermsof theorganisationin itsentire-ty.

In my personal experience, someBECs’ members know nothing aboutUmkhonto we Sizwe Military Veter-ansAssociation (MKMVA), and that itispartandparceloftheANC.TheANCneeds to take the issue of inductionseriously. What is needed for all newANC members is a properly struc-tured programme of induction andpolitical education at a branch level.

Thiswouldmake sure that peoplewho serve on these BECs are wellequipped in terms of understandingall the workings and components ofthe ANC. Isn’t it disgraceful being anardent ANC card-carrying member, yet being diametrically in the dark

withrespect toMKMVAand its role inthe ANC?

The ANC Moses Mabhida regionwas named after the commissar andchiefpolitical instructorofMK,MosesMabhida. But does the leadership ofthis region reflect that in their deal-ings with MK veterans?

We hope that Senzo Mchunu, asthe new ANC chairperson in thisprovince, would recognise MKMVA.Does the ANC leadership rejoice fail-ing to honour their promises to assistMK veterans? I’m struggling tounderstandwhyMeshack Radebe asanANCleaderfailedtokeephisprom-ise of hiring military veterans toaddress the issue of rhino poaching.

When MK suspended the armedstrugglein1990,whichultimately ledto its disbandment in 1993, the ANCnever uttered a single word that theex-combatants had now becomeobsolete in its political life. Which iswhy youwould find the leadership ofMKMVA(establishedin1996)playinga crucial role in the ANC structures,

for instance, Kebby Maphatsoe, thenational chairperson of MKMVA, is amember of the national executivecommittee (NEC) of the ANC.

His KZN provincial counterpart,Themba Mavundla, is also instru-mental in the ANC in the province. Itshould also be noted that no one canpurport to be an MKMVA memberwithout being a loyal card-carryingmemberoftheANC -MKMVAderivesits existence fromtheANC.Thisgivesus a vivid demonstration thatMKMVA can never be divorced fromthe ANC.

For the mere fact that you are anindustrious and zealous ANC mem-ber, who unfortunately happens notto be anMKMVAmember, shouldnotmake you resentful and envious ofMK veterans. The National Demo-cratic Revolution (NDR) shouldneverbe desecrated through the trivialisa-tion of MK veterans - the ANC mem-bers should learn to embrace andrespect the ex-combatants.

Do you think the organisationalancestry of Chris Hani, Joe Slovo,OliverTambo,JBMarks,HarryGwalaand Moses Mabhida, the list is end-less, is happy about the indignities towhich MK veterans are subjected? Was the execution of MK guerillassuch as Solomon Mahlangu, VuyisileMini, Walter Khanyingo and manyothers, in vain?WasNelsonMandelaplaying games when he underwentmilitary training in Algeria, Ethiopiaand China, becoming the first com-mander of MK?

Indeed this despicable attitude ofbeing scornful ofMKveterans shouldbe refrained from.

MosesKotane, oneof theANC/MKstalwarts, had this to say:

“For one to be a true cadre of themovement it is necessary to be bornagain, to become a new person.”

Indoor soccer is aliveand kicking in SA

THEcountrynowhasanewindoorsoccerleague and it’s known Saifa.

It falls under the country’ governingbodySafa. Thesoccerindoorleague, undertheSouth African Indoor Football Association(Saifa), is popularly called “Futsal” around theglobe and is currently taking SA by storm.

It’s fixtures are played all over the countryevery weekend.

What ismoreinteresting, andnotknownbymany, is that thechairmanofSaifa is local legalguru and long serving executive member ofSafa, Poobie Govindansamy.

Govindansamy this week told Echo that“Futsal” is very popular around theworld andfixtures are played twice a week.

He said soccer giants such as Spain, Brazil,Italy, Germany and others start by mouldingtheir players in the indoor leagues, beforegraduating to outdoor.

“I am glad that the mother body, Safa, agreed to start and to accommodate their newbaby Saifa, commonly called Futsal in soccercircles around the world.

“I amalso excited that our affiliates (teams)are coming from all the SA provinces. Otherprovinces are already becomingpowerhousesof Saifa.

“It is also interesting that therearea coupleofteamsfromtheCityOfChoicelikeMaritzburgHotspur and Young Natalians,” saidGovindansamy.

Another Pietermaritzurg-based adminis-trator, EbrahimHossen, who is Saifa’s generalsecretary, told Echo that the new look leaguereceived a shot in the arm andwas sponsoredby the 2010 Fifa World Cup Legacy Trust thathas provided R1.6 million.

But this requires additional sponsorshipthat will boost the growth of Futsal and createopportunities for all South Africans. The immediate aim of the league is to create-credible competitionand this canonly bedonebyhavingasustainableNationalFutsalLeagueacross the country.

“Wedon’t achievegoodresultson the inter-national scenebecausewelackedexperiencedplayers. We can only have such players if wehavea competitive league whichwecan selectour best players from,” said Hossen.

Currently, the league ismadeof120playerswhoareeligibleforselectiontorepresentSAonthe Futsal international scene.

“We are now following in the footsteps ofcountries such as Brazil and Spain.” he said.

For information, local potential affiliatescan contact Hossen at 033 345 5707 (office) or073 264 4288.

Disabled dowonders in aglobal race

NOKULUNGA NGOBESE>>[email protected]

HAVING scooped medals in theinternational wheelchair racingtournament that was held in CapeTown last week, chairperson ofRichmond Riders Club, MichaelLuthaka, says that disability doesnot mean inability.

The club, which deals with allissuesofpeople livingwithdisabili-ties through sports, broke recordsby coming back home with tenmedals - five gold, four bronze andone silver, beating participantsfrom different countries.

The club also made their markby participating in the NelsonMandelamarathon lastyear, whichwasopenedfor the first timetopeo-ple livingwith disabilities. Its otherprojects include skills develop-ment, computer training, craft anddeveloping all sporting codes forpeople living with disabilities.Speaking to Echo, Luthaka said:“This is a great achievement for us,especially since we had manychallengesprior tothetournament.Although we did not get enoughsupport, coming back with thesemedals is very encouraging.

“If you are livingwith a disabili-ty, it does not mean it is the end ofthe world. Living with a disability, does not mean that you are unableto do things.

“You can still do something thatthe whole world can be proud of. Itwas not easy as we competedagainst world champions.”

Most of SA coaches arenot training any playersIT is impossible to improveand progress without apply-ing yourself. Presently, thereisnotmuch trainingandcom-petition happening in SouthAfrican football. There is verylittle action.

The country has alsoinvested huge amounts intraining football coaches. It isunfortunate thatmostof thesecoaches are not training anyplayers. Coaches can only getbetter through working withplayers daily.

We also have many otheruncertificated coaches thatonly talk about football. Theyhave a bit of knowledge andexperience but are notwilling

to educate the youth of thiscountry. They have lots ofopinions and ideas yet theyareunwillingtotesttheirtheo-ries. We need to learn thatwishes, plans and promisesnevergotanyoneanywhere.Itis not possible to succeedwithout making sacrifices.Improvementsareonlypossi-ble when people act on theirgoals.

Areweanationthatstrivesfor excellence?

It is interesting to listen tothe general public talkingabout our footballers. We callthem all kinds of negativethings. Are South Africansgenerally a hard working

people?Dowestrive for100%or are we just content with a30%passmark?Dowegener-ally go beyond the call of dutyor expect more money forovertime?

Football is part of a coun-try’sculture.Footballofficials,coaches, referees and playersaremembersofcommunities. If a community is corrupt orlazy, do not expect a differentsituation in football.

The sooner we learn thatthere are no free lunches in

thisworld, thebetterfor the future ofSouth Africa. It hasto start with parentsand those in leader-ship positions. Ourboys and girls needto be encouraged tomake an effort to dotheir best in sportsand academicwork. The reality is thatyoung people modeltheir parents andother adults. SouthAfrica is rich withsporting talent thatneed to be cultivat-ed. Presently, noSouth African foot-baller has joined thearistocrats of foot-ball in the Europeanleagues. We contin-ue to fail generationafter generation. Letus have more actionand less talking. Un-zima lo mthwalo!
