How to stay financially comfortable atRetirement

many articles have been written about beingfinancially prepared for retirement but veryfew articles talk about what you need to do tostay financially comfortable.

It is more difficult to deal with financialchallenges when you are retired than whenyou are young. So take these steps now tostay financially secure and look out for thefollowing risks:

Inflation risk is a reality and happens whenyour pension doesn’t keep up with inflation,e.g. in 2005 R20 could buy you three bags ofrice, but now it’ll only buy you one bag.

this leads us to the longevity risk – living long and possibly running out of income.the savings we have when we retire may not be enough to support us in our goldenyears, especially with medical technology that lets us live longer.

another risk that gets overlooked is consumption risk – consuming more than whatyour financial plan can support. Schedule an annual review of your investments andstay in touch with your financial affairs.

then there’s investment risk – the risk of making the wrong investment decisions.there isn’t much time to fix any wrong investment choices after you’ve retired soget a qualified financial adviser to help you.

Your financial partner before and at retirementWe can help with one of the biggest financial decisions that will impact the restof your life. Contact the Pietermaritzburg branch on (033) 345 7301 or visit us at291 Pietermaritz Street, Pietermaritzburg.

SIYABONGA MSHENGU

The Arts and Culture Department should learn to take our artists seriously

WHEN the ANC established its department of arts and culture(DAC) in 1982, it was not just a

mere amorphous and ludicrous gesture, but it was initiated to mobilise South African cultural workers at home and abroad. It was also to engage a broad range of people in the culture of protest and resistance, its goal broadly being the democratictransformation of arts and culture in ourcountry. For decades instruments of division and

subjugation, arts and culture were seen bythe DAC as unifying tools of liberation forall South Africans. In 1993 the Culture and Development Conferences (CDC), convened by former ANCpresident Oliver Tambo, was held in Johannesburg, primarily to draw up an inclusiveand nonsectarian national arts and culture policy for South Africa. The importantthing about CDC is that it was not concerned with questions of liberation, butthat of governance. Some of its objectives were: to bring to

gether creative workers from across thecultural and political spectrum and provide a showcase for their work and creations, and to provide a platform for allstakeholders to make their contribution todeveloping a new culture dispensation.

The call for a ministry of arts and culturewas sounded at this conference, and shortly after the election, the ministry wasformed with Dr. Ben Ngubane at the headand Winnie Mandela as his deputy. All theabove mentioned efforts demanded a lotof seriousness, commitment and dedication on the part of the ANC, and it was nota child’s play. But since the attainment of our freedom

in 1994, it seems as if our department ofarts and culture has forgotten that it wascreated on the premise of transformingSouth Africa’s cultural landscape for thebetter. Our artists are perishing in destitution in the presence of the DAC. Artistic andcultural organisations struggle to get financial assistance from the department. The reason being that it is highly bureaucratic and this bureaucracy being the maincause of its inefficiency and dysfunctionality. These faceless, cynical and jealous offi

cials with their red tape, who perceive andtreat arts and culture with frivolity and insensitivity, are the chief stumbling block tothe development of our artists. Let alonetheirnotbeingpassionateandknowledgeable about the arts, they are there, just likeany other employees, to support their families.Foryears, ItogetherwithlocaljazzguitaristZazi Mncube, bass player Langa Mthalane,Vusi Msomi and Sabelo Mwandla, both theactors, tried to approach the departmentto assist our Take Four Musical Organisation, to no avail. This transpired despite the

fact that we had all the required documentation. When we realized that they wereutterly reluctant to assist us, it became vividly clear to us that pestering them was afutile exercise.

Bhekabona Qwabe, the late freelancedrummer, and Smanga Zibula, the guitarist for the local jazz band, Fate for Africa, are some of our highly talented musicianswho died without having been supportedin their creative endeavours. Even the artists who called themselves, uMgungundlovu Concerned Artists, under the chairmanship of Kwenza Mthembu, in June this year, raised this matter of our artists being takenfor granted by the department, with theMEC for Arts and Culture, NtombikayiseSibhidla Saphetha. These departments of ours are very good

in terms of returning funds allocated tothem back to the National Treasury, butextremely incompetent when it comes tospending them to the benefit of eligiblepeople. South Africa is a land of plenty, soseeing our artists suffering is iniquitous. But then how do we expect our artists in

this part of the world to flourish when ourvery current national minister of arts andculture, Paul Mashatile, regarded his appointment to head the ministry, as a political demotion? Do you think our honourable minister who feels as having been relegated can work diligently to address theplight of our creative workers? Do our municipalities together with their ward councillors comprehend the importance of thearts in their communities?

I received with jubilation the news thatWinston Churchill Theatre had been revamped. But how do we take pride in thephysical structure of the hospital withoutcherishing health practitioners, and isn’t ridiculous to admire a university’s exquisiteness and denigrate its lecturers?South Africa has a high rate of unemployment, and in the ranks of the unemployedwe have artists who only need governmentsupport to do their creative work, whichcould help in the reduction of unemployment. Even the private sector has the social responsibility to assist our artists. Howdo you explain the philanthropy characterized by selectivity, the philanthropist whocan’t operate without the media? Shouldour good Samaritans be selective in termsof rescuing the indigent artists? Should thewhole world know when I have been assisted, and is being generous quietly not beneficial or an anathema? I don’t think knowing why some of our philanthropists can’tbe dissociated from politicians, and viceversa, is a problem. The indispensability of the arts in human

existence is indisputable, and music is aclassic example: weddings, parties, celebrations, churches, funerals, political gatherings, electronic media, schools and othersettings, music plays a pivotal role and isunavoidable. The contribution of our musicians in the political struggle can never bedisdained and trivialised.

Our theatres have always been sacredspaces because our stories, poems, musicand dance have been soldiers that escalat

ed the liberation struggle which ultimatelydismantled oppression. Theatre in SouthAfrica has always been a dynamic forumthat has given us courage to grapple withthe state of our nation. Our writers, standup comedians, satirists and communitybased artists have utilised their immenseand remarkable talents to create and nurture a climate that has allowed us all tobecome active participants in our democracy.

Our artists are our nation’s conscience;they give us a window on our world, butalso give us glimpse of an imaginary world. They have incredible gift of uniting us allin a common celebration of humanitywhen we are able to laugh, cry, feel sorrowand experience hope.Musa Nkuna, a supremely gifted South African opera singer, says: “We are culture, wedefine our own culture, and we are responsible for our culture. Because culture is social glue that keeps societies and communities together, any little crack will causethings to fall apart. We earnestly entreat and appeal to the

department of arts and culture to changetheir attitude towards our artists, thisthing of belittling our artists should cometo an end. Our society, as well, should takearts and culture seriously, for the nationthat doesn’t embrace its cultural aspect isdoomed to deteriorate.

THE South African pride and the only Mzansiteam campaigning in the high profile CAFChampions League, OrlandoPirates look set tomake another piece of history.

TheMightyBucsistravellingfortheirCham-pions League semi- final showdown on Satur-day against Esperance in Tunis.

Pirates only need a scoring draw to reachthe final phase of the tournament.

A fortnight ago the Soweto giants played toa goaless draw at Orlando Stadium during thefirst leg of the semi final.

Reaching the Cham-pions League final andwinning it will surelybring back good oldmemories to Piratesdies-hards when theyclaimed it in 1995.

During the historicyear, theBuccaneershadquality players all roundand in all positions suchas Gavin Lane,

Mark Fish, EdwardMotale, Jerry Skhosana,HelmanMkhalele, Bren-don Silent, Papi Kgo-mane and WilliamOkpara, just to count thefew.

Pirates former star defender, Motale be-lieves the SA side

is standing a good chance to make it to thefinals, but will have to dig deep, be united andbe strong mentally and physically.

“Thefirst thingtheymustunderstandisthatthere’s

a lot in stake. The opponents are likely to doanything just to play mind games for them tolose focus.

“The players must also remember what isthe meaning

of reaching the CAF Champions League fi-nal. Conquering Africa and earning anotherstarwillbeground-breakingandanotherhisto-ry for Pirates as an SA side.

“Personally, I thinkthisteamcangothroughandwinprovided that theyplay likea team, diefor one another from the first whistles.

“For me, I think, with a strong and rightmentallity they

are standing a good chance,” said Motale. He further said the only thing that carried

Pirates through during their “old glory” dayswas “unity and brotherhood”.

Pirates assistant coach, Teboho Moloi saidhisteamwasreadyforthebigstageandagruel-

lingencounteraway.Hesaid the onlyway towinis to have a winningmentality and going fora kill.

“It’s an away gameand won’t be easy at allbut we can win it if weplay with the rightframe of mind and atti-tude.

“In games like thisthe attitude and strongmentality counts a lot togo through,” explainedMoloi.

Pirates veteran de-fender, captain and anatural leader, LuckyLekgwathi is expected

tobebackinthefoldafterSiyabongaSangweni, who acted as a skipper recently,

picked up an injury. It is left to be seen if the personal problems

Lekgwathi had with the head coach, Roger DeSa and other techical team members are nowsorted and if he is in the good shape to play.

His presence and his leadership skills areneeded in the team. A plus for Pirates is thattheir industrious midfielder, Thandani Ntshu-mayelo will be fit to play.

THABO DLADLA

TALKINGFOOTBALL

PRESENTLY, the majority of us seek more faults andweaknesses than solutions for South African football. We are failing to understand that the future andthe strength of our game depends on everyone involved. We need to move away from the thinking that indi

is being violated in our country.Football is more about what happens inside the fieldthan many useless things people talk about. It isabout dominating the ball and making the right decisions. Football is both an art and science. Young people therefore need to be trained to develop their abilities. Trainers/ coaches themselves need to be empowered with knowledge and skills. We need to develop a culture of excellence in foot

ball. Managers, referees, coaches and players shouldstrive to do their best. Aristotle says: “We are whatwe repeatedly do; excellence then is not an act buta habit.” If nations like Germany and Brazil can doit, nothing can stop us.Unzima lo mthwalo!

viduals can provide all solutions. It is not by chancethat other nations are doing well. There is alwaysthe right or correct way of doing things. South Africans must start to do things the right way. Thisis a simple formula for success. We cannot claim to be a football loving nation

while there are no facilities. Government cannotclaim to be behind football while facilities in mostareas are either in disrepair or nonexistent. Players need decent training and competition fields todevelop their skills. The numbers that Danny Jordan is talking about in terms of players and matches will not materialise without facilities. We are a country that has no respect for sports.

It is the last thing in our priorities. We find it easyto erect tents and park vehicles thereby destroyingthe turf. People do not understand the value ofquality facilities in terms of training and competition. It is also obvious that the understanding andappreciation for quality fields will take many yearsto materialize. It takes some time to change thethinking through training and education.A country that hosted the top world footballers

in 2010 has no business subjecting their childrento play under dangerous conditions. We cannot betalking of unmarked fields with uncut turf in 2013.The conditions do not encourage our young to takeup this beautiful game. I think we spend a lot ofenergy talking about useless rights for young people. The right to play and develop sporting skills

TKO matchesexpected toentertainTHIS week, South African soc-

cer will switch to the interest-ing annual Telkom Knockout

series. It is interesting to note that the

2012 TKO Champions, Bloemfon-tein Celtic, are not only already outbut have also suddenly parted wayswith their head coach, ClintonLarsen.

Although the Free State–basedoutfit still insist that thedepartureofthe Wentworth–born and formerManningRangersplayerwasnotex-pected and took them by surprise, indications are clear that poor re-sults were the main reason.

“Larsen’s resignation took all ofus by surprise and we did not see itcoming,”saidCeltic’sCEO,Khumbu-

lani Khonco.Echo has reliably learnt that los-

ing to BidvestWits 3–0 in theMTN8fixture and also the disappointing4-0 loss to Sundowns during the re-cent TKO games broke the carmel’sback, and Phunya Selesele did nottake it kindly.

Currently as things stand, theTKOtrophyseemstobeanopenracebut it will bewise to pay attention tothe likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Super-Sport United, Mamelodi Sundowns,PlatinumStars andOrlandoPirates.

The only side expected to hoistthe KZN flag aloft is LamontvilleGolden Arrows, who are scheduledto meet the ever–travelling Pirateson 23 October away at Orlando Sta-dium. By co–incidence, the Team ofChoice and Abafana Bes’thendewere also dumped by their coaches,Enrst Middendorp and ManqobaMngqithi respectively last week, inwhatwas dubbedthe“darkestweek
