Maturation
coming to full development; becoming mature
(biology) the process of an individual
organism growing organically; a purely
biological unfolding of events involved in an
organism changing gradually from a simple to a
more complex level
What Is The Definition Of Child Maturation ?
Maturation is the unfolding and ripening of the child’s abilities, characteristics, traits, and potentialities present at birth but only later coming to maturity in a developing organism.
Maturing is the development of innate patterns of behavior in ordered sequence.
Gesell’s Maturation Theory
Gesell was born and raised in Alma,
Wisconsin, and received a doctorate in
psychology in 1906 from Clark
University. In 1911 he began a faculty
position in education at Yale University.
Gesell, a psychologist, pediatrician,
and educator in the 1940s, was very
interested in child development.
Gesell formulated a theory known as
maturation. This theory stated that
developmental changes in a child's body or
behavior are a result of the aging process
rather than from learning, injury, illness, or
some other life experience.
Infants and children develop motor skills
in a fixed order and within special time
frame.
Most babies do go through a series of
developmental milestones such as learning to
crawl, learning to walk in a fixed sequence.
Maturation supports the idea that each
child's unique genetic and biological makeup
determines the rate of development regardless
of other potential environmental influences.
Four fields of behavior
Motor Behavior (พฤตกรรมดานการเคลอนไหว)
Language Behavior (พฤตกรรมดานการสอภาษา)
Behavior development
In the first quarter of the first year of life (birth
to 16 weeks), the newborn gains control of
muscles and nerves in the face (those involved in
sight, hearing, taste, sucking, swallowing, and
smell).
In the second quarter (16 to 28 weeks), the
infant starts to develop command of muscles of
the neck and head and moves her arms
purposefully. The baby reaches out for objects.
In the third quarter (28 to 40 weeks), the baby
gains control of her trunk and her hands, grasping
objects, transferring them from hand to hand.
In the fourth quarter (40 to 52 weeks), control
extends to the baby's legs and feet, and also to the
index fingers and thumbs, to allow plucking of a
tiny object. The baby begins to talk.
In the second year, the toddler walks and runs,
speaks some words and phrases clearly, acquires
bladder and bowel control, and begins to develop a
sense of personal identity and of personal
possessions.
In the third year, the child speaks in clear
sentences, using words as tools of thinking. No
longer an infant, she tries to manipulate the
environment. She displays tantrums.
In the fourth year, the child asks many questions
and begins to form concepts and to generalize. She
is nearly self-dependent in home routines.
By age five years, the child is very mature in
motor control over large muscles; she actively
skips, hops, and jumps. She talks without any
infantile sounds and can tell a long story and a few
simple jokes. She feels pride in accomplishment
and is quite self-assured in the small world of
home.
Interpersonal Theory
Harry Stack Sullivan (1892-1949)
Interpersonal Theory Harry Stack Sullivan (1892-1949)
Sullivan was born in Norwich, New York, on February 21, 1892. He was schooled at Smyrna Union School and began his higher education at Cornell University.
After two years, he transferred to the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery and earned his MD in 1917.
Sullivan focused his attention on
interpersonal relationships and in
particular, the effect of loneliness on
mental health
Sullivan's interpersonal theory
provides the theoretical basis for
interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for
depression and schizophrenia.
He stated that interpersonal good
relationships cause warmth in the
heart.
There are three basic ways we see
ourselves that Sullivan called the bad-me,
the good-me and the not-me.
The good me is everything we like about ourselves. It represents the part of us we share with others and that we often choose to focus on because it produces no anxiety.
The bad me represents those aspects of the self that
are considered negative and are therefore hidden from
others and possibly even the self. The anxiety that we feel
is often a result of recognition of the bad part of ourselves,
such as when we recall an embarrassing moment or
experience guilt from a past action.
The not-me, represents all those things that are so anxiety provoking that we cannot even consider them a part of us. Doing so would definitely create anxiety which we spend our lives trying to avoid. The not-me is kept out of awareness by pushing it deep into the unconscious.
He called the stages in his developmental
theory Epochs, and believed that we pass through
these stages in a particular order but the timing of
such is dictated by our social environment.
Much of the focus in Sullivan's theory revolved around the conflicts of adolescence.
His idea is that if the first 20 years of human lives had gotten positive experiences, they would have had good personality development and been good social members
Sullivan's Developmental Epochs Infancy (Age birth to 1 year)
From birth to about age one, the child begins the process of developing, but Sullivan did not emphasize the younger years to near the importance as Freud.
Childhood (Ages 1 to 6)
The development of speech and improved communication is key in this stage of development.
Juvenile (Ages 6 to 9)
The main focus as a juvenile is the
need for playmates and the beginning
of healthy socialization
Preadolescence (Ages 9 to 12)
During this stage, the child's ability to form a
close relationship with a peer is the major
focus. This relationship will later assist the child
in feeling worthy and likable. Without this ability,
forming the intimate relationships in late
adolescence and adulthood will be difficult.

Early Adolescence (Ages 12 to 14)
The onset of puberty changes this need for
friendship to a need for sexual
expression. Self worth will often become
synonymous with sexual attractiveness and
acceptance by opposite sex peers.
Late Adolescence (Ages 14 to 21)
The need for friendship and need for sexual
expression get combined during late
adolescence. In this stage a long term
relationship becomes the primary focus.
Conflicts between parental control and self-
expression are commonplace and the overuse of
selective inattention in previous stages can result
in a skewed perception of the self and the world.

Adulthood (Ages 21 on)
The struggles of adulthood include financial security, career, and family.
With success during previous stages, especially those in the adolescent years, adult relationships and much needed socialization become more easy to attain. Without a solid background, interpersonal conflicts that result in anxiety become more commonplace.

The Cognitive Theory of Jean Piaget
Jean Piaget (1896-1980)
Piaget was a Swiss psychologist.
He completed his Ph.D in biology and wrote more than 50 influenctial books during his life time.
His theory is that intellectual development results from an active, dynamic interplay between children and
their environment.

Superego
holds all of our internalized moral standards and ideals that we acquire from both parents and society--our sense of right and wrong
provides guidelines for making judgments
begins to emerge at around age five
Defense Mechanisms
Denial (การปฏเสธ)
refuse to accept the truth or reality of a fact or
experience
also be used by victims of trauma or disasters and
may even be a beneficial initial protective response.
In the long run, however, denial can prevent people
from incorporating unpleasant information about
themselves and their lives and have potentially
destructive consequences

Repression (การเกบกด)
repression involves simply forgetting something bad in unconscious
might forget an unpleasant experience, in the past, such as a car accident at which you were found to be at fault
repression, like denial, can be temporarily beneficial, particularly if you've forgotten something bad that happened to you, but as with denial, if you don't come to grips with the experience it may come back to haunt you.

Electra complex is the young girl’s development of an intense desire to replace the mother and enjoy the affections of the father
Begin to develop Superego
Latency stage (5 to 12 years)
the child represses all interest
in sexuality and develops social
and intellectual skills
Genital stage (12 to 20 years)
a surge of sexual hormones
occurs in both genders
a time of sexual reawakening ;

Psychosocial Theory Erik Homburger Erikson (1902-1994)
Psychosocial Theory
Erik Homburger Erikson (1902-1994)
Social and reflected a desire to affiliate with
other people
Emphasized developmental change
throughout the human life span
Erikson’s theory includes eight stages of
human development. Each stage consists of
a unique developmental task that confronts
individuals with a crisis that must be resolved.
Erikson’s Eight Stages of Man
Trust versus mistrust (birth to 1 year old)
infants should develop a sense of basic trust
the world is a safe and happy place
trust flourishes with warmth, care, and
discipline
Autonomy versus shame and doubt
(1 to 3 years old) (ขนพฒนาความเปนอสระ ความ

Children begin to feed and dress themselves,
and toilet training
Children usually start acquiring self-control
Initiative versus guilt (3 to 5 years old)
building on the ability to control themselves
Erikson believed that play was particularly
important during these years, both as an aid
to a child’s identity and as a safe way to
reduce tension by dealing with problems
Industry versus inferiority (6 to 11 years
Children expand their horizons beyond the
family and begin to explore the neighborhood
Their play become more purposeful and they
seek knowledge to complete the tasks that
they set for themselves
Identity versus identity confusion
(12 to 18 years old) (ขนพฒนาความเปน
The main task of the adolescent is to
achieve a state of identity
Can present appropriate rules
Intimacy versus isolation (18 to 35
years old) (ขนพฒนาความสมพนธ
the essential ability to relate one
deepest hopes and fear to another
person and to accept in turn another
person’s need for intimacy
Generativity versus stagnation (35 to
60 years old) (ขนพฒนาการสงเสรม
Generativity means the ability to be
useful to ourselves and to society
many people become mentors to
young individuals, sharing their
knowledge and philosophy of life
Integrity versus despair (60 years old

Adults who have sense of integrity
accept their lives as having been well

Kohlberg’s Moral Development Theory
Lawrence Kohlberg (1927-1987) He was the famous psychologist at
Harvard University
All his ideas started from the research he performed with very young children as his subjects. He found out that children are faced with different moral issues, and their judgments on whether they are to act positively or negatively over each dilemma are heavily influenced by several factors.

Children obey because adults tell them to
obey. People base their moral decisions on
fear of punishment.
Stage 2 Individualism, Purpose, and Exchange
Individuals pursue their own
interests but let others do the same.
What is right involves equal
exchange. People reason that if they
are nice to others, others will be nice
to them in return.
Level 2 Conventional Level, Intermediate

Stage 3 Mutual Interpersonal Expectations, Relationships, and Interpersonal Conformity
Individuals value trust, caring, and loyalty to others as a basis for moral judgments.
Seeking to be thought of by their
parents as a “good girl” or a “good boy”
Moral judgments are based on understanding of the social order, law, justice, and duty.
Level 3 Postconventional Level, Full Internalization (ระดบมจรยธรรมหนอกฎเกณฑ)
The highest level in Kohlberg’s theory of moral development
Stage 5 Social Contract or Utility and Individual Rights
Individuals reason that values, rights, and principles undergird or transcend the law.
Stage 6 Universal Ethical Principles (อดมคตสากล)
The reason has developed moral judgments that are based on universal human rights. When faced with a dilemma between law and conscience, a personal, individualized conscience is followed.
