    CSE Diary for 18.01.2013

The Colombo bourse rushed up to a 20 point gain during the first hour of

trading peaking at 5,895 points following which a gradual downward

slope was observed resulting in the market closing flat for the day. The

S&P SL20 journeyed on a volatile path and finally closed on a negative

note with a dip of 10 points. Lanka Orix Leasing, Nation Lanka Finance

and Sri Lanka Telecom were the main positive contributors to the index.

Following the dip in interest rates in treasury bills and bonds, retail

activity has considerably improved in the market improving the volume

and number of trades in the market. We believe market interest rates ofdeposits and lending would also adopt a similar trend during the next 3-

4 months. This has triggered investor sentiment in the market. However,

still activity remains at moderate level with investors entering the market

on a small scale. We strongly advise our investors to rush into the

fundamentally strong growth counters as it is still not too late though the

market has gained almost 1000 points from its bottom. We believe the

primary focus of the investors should be banking and finance sector as

declining interest rates would improve their margins and allow

opportunity for profits in the bill and bonds market. The countrys largest listed bank, Commercial Bank which has drawn

considerable foreign interest in the past 12 months topped todays

turnover with further accumulation in the counter. The counter

registered 3 crossings accounting for 1.7mn shares dealt at LKR104.5

and 105.0. The counter saw a couple of large blocks of 450k and 100k

shares being traded onboard as well at LKR105.0. The counter closed

for the day at the same price of LKR105.0. Hayleys was the only other

counter to record a crossing which was 240k shares at LKR300.0. On-

board trading on the counter was minute.Investor interest persisted in Distilleries as the counter renewed its 52-

week high price to LKR190.0. However following the gains in the last few

days the counter noted some selling pressure amidst profit taking

leading the counter to close the day on a negative note with a dip of

1.1% at LKR187.8. Its related company Lanka Milk Foods has also been

among the counters accumulated by investors considering the 13%

stake it holds in Distilleries. The counter also reached a new 52-week

high price of LKR126 while it closed with a hefty gain of 4.2% at LKR125.0. Strong buying interest specially among the retail category was

witnessed in 2 of the large Power and Energy company Lanka IOC and

Laugfs Gas as the former touched a 52-week high LKR23.0. John Keells

Holdings and Aitken Spence were also among the active counters for

the day. Most European Stocks Climb on China GDP Report: Most European

(SXXP) stocks climbed as Chinas economy accelerated for the first time

in two years. U.S. index futures fluctuated, while Asian shares rose. TheStoxx Europe 600 Index rose 0.1% to 287.7 at 10:25 a.m. in London as

more than three stocks advanced for every two that retreated. Oil Heads for Longest Run of Weekly Gains in 14 Months: Oil headed for

the longest weekly rising streak in 14 months in New York after

economic growth accelerated in China, the worlds second-biggest

crude consumer.Crude for February delivery was at USD95.36 a barrel,

down 13 cents, in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile

Exchange at 10:23 a.m. London time.

Liquidity spikes in Sri Lanka money markets: Liquidity in Sri Lanka's money markets has climbed to aroundLKR40 bn amid dollar inflows bought by the monetary authority, but two terms auctions were announced

Friday to mop up liquidity. On Wednesday unsterilized dollar purchases pushed excess liquidity to LKR46.1

bn from LKR9.1 bn a day earlier. The excess clearing balance is close to 10% of the current domestic

monetary base. The central bank temporarily mopped up cash overnight through a LKR36 bn repo auction

while the balance went to the standing repo facility. To clear the existing spike in excess liquidity and

maintain the exchange rate the Central Bank will either have to engage in unsterilized dollar sales in the

coming weeks or kill domestic credit through a sell down of Treasury bills (a sterilized purchase of forex). OnJanuary 17th, a LKR12.5 bn term auction injections matured and was not rolled over, indicating a sterilized

    foreign exchange purchase.

VAT increase not passed to customers - Supermarkets: Despite the popular belief that the value added tax(VAT) imposed on supermarkets and wholesalers by Budget 2013, so far, traders have not passed the

additional cost to the customers, a top official of one of the countrys leading supermarket chains said.

The official, who was talking to Mirror Business on grounds of anonymity, said that neither his company nor

any other retailer had passed the impact to the customers. The customer can see that the list price of

products has not changed. The impact of VAT is absorbed by us and I do not think anyone in the industry too

has so far passed the impact of VAT to the consumer, he noted. Nevertheless, he added that they werenegotiating with the suppliers to improve the margins. Commenting on the calls by the retailers to

reconsider the Budget proposal to charge VAT, as it would dent their top line, Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B.

Jayasundera told a forum held recently that people who go shopping in supermarkets could afford the new

    VAT imposed.

Central Bank urges banks to consolidate: The Central Bank renewed its calls for consolidation in the bankingsector of the country, which is overcrowded with 24 Licensed Commercial Banks (LCBs) and nine Licensed

Specialized Banks (LSBs), with over LKR5 trillion worth assets. Speaking on the encouragement and the

additional leeway provided for LCBs in mobilizing funds from foreign markets, as a way of managing the

liquidity risk and the Asset-Liability Mismatch (ALM) risks, both of which are typical in banks, T.M.J.Y.P.Fernando, Director of Bank Supervision at the Central Bank, emphasized the importance of consolidation in

terms of mergers and acquisitions in the sector. Even though a few of our banks seem to have larger

balance sheets, they too become smaller in size in global financial markets, particularly when they attempt to

mobilize foreign funds. We issued only two licences last year (of which, one is also provisional) and we firmly

China's economy grows 7.8% for 2012, better than expected: China's economic growth rose in the fourthquarter of 2012, helping the world's most populous nation end the year with a growth rate of 7.8%,

according to figures released Friday from the National Bureau of Statistics. Last quarter, China's economy

grew at a pace of 7.9%, slightly better than analyst expectations and breaking a pattern of seven straight

quarters of decline. China's growth rate had been steadily falling since the fourth quarter of 2010, when

economic output grew 9.8%. The slowing growth rate bottomed out in the third quarter of 2012, when

China's economy only grew at 7.4%.

    either modest or moderate."

Fed Concerned About Overheated Markets Amid Record Bond Buys: Federal Reserve officials are voicingincreased concern that record-low interest rates are overheating markets for assets from farmland to junkbonds, which could heighten risks when they reverse their unprecedented bond purchases. Investors have

been snapping up riskier assets since the Fed boosted its bond buying to reduce long-term borrowing costs

after cutting its overnight rate target close to zero in December 2008. Enthusiasm for speculative-grade

bonds is at unprecedented levels, driving a Credit Suisse index that tracks the yield on more than 1,500

issues to a record-low 5.9% last week. Now, as central bankers boost their stimulus with additional bond

purchases, policy makers from Chairman Ben S. Bernanke to Kansas City Fed President Esther George are on

the lookout for financial distortions that may reverse abruptly when the Fed stops adding to its portfolio and

    eventually shrinks it.

N.Z. Consumer Prices Unexpectedly Fall 0.2%; Kiwi Retreats: New Zealands consumer prices unexpectedlyfell last quarter amid a sluggish economy and cheaper imports, giving the central bank scope to prolong a

period of record-low interest rates. The local currency slumped. Consumer prices declined 0.2% from the

third quarter, when they rose 0.3%, Statistics New Zealand said in Wellington today. The central bank

expected a 0.1% rise, as did economists according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey of 12

analysts. From a year earlier, prices gained 0.9% compared with economists prediction for a 1.2% advance.
