PATCHIN, PhDa SAMEER HINDUJA, PhDb ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: This article examines the relationship between middle school students' experience with cyberbullying and their level of self-esteem. Previous research on traditional bullying among adolescents has found a relatively consistent link between victimization and lower self-esteem, while finding an inconsistent relationship between offending and lower self-esteem. It is therefore important to extend this body of research by determining how bullying augmented through the use of technology (such as computers and cell phones) is linked to differing levels of self-esteem. METHODS: During March and April 2007, a random sample of 1963 middle school students (mean age 12.6) from 30 schools in one of the largest school districts in the United States completed a self-report survey of Internet use and cyberbullying experiences. RESULTS: This work found that students who experienced cyberbullying, both as a victim and an offender, had significantly lower self-esteem than those who had little or no experience with cyberbullying. CONCLUSIONS: A moderate and statistically significant relationship exists between low self-esteem and experiences with cyberbullying. As such, bullying prevention programs incorporated in school curricula should also include substantive instruction on cyberbullying. Moreover, educators need to intervene in cyberbullying incidents, as failure to do so may impact the ability of students to be successful at school. Cyberbullying and Self-Esteem*

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This article examines the relationship between middle schoolstudents' experience with cyberbullying and their level of self-esteem. Previous researchon traditional bullying among adolescents has found a relatively consistent link betweenvictimization and lower self-esteem, while finding an inconsistent relationship betweenoffending and lower self-esteem. It is therefore important to extend this body of researchby determining how bullying augmented through the use of technology (such ascomputers and cell phones) is linked to differing levels of self-esteem.

METHODS: During March and April 2007, a random sample of 1963 middle schoolstudents (mean age 12.6) from 30 schools in one of the largest school districts in theUnited States completed a self-report survey of Internet use and cyberbullyingexperiences.

RESULTS: This work found that students who experienced cyberbullying, both as avictim and an offender, had significantly lower self-esteem than those who had little orno experience with cyberbullying.

CONCLUSIONS: A moderate and statistically significant relationship exists betweenlow self-esteem and experiences with cyberbullying. As such, bullying preventionprograms incorporated in school curricula should also include substantive instructionon cyberbullying. Moreover, educators need to intervene in cyberbullying incidents, asfailure to do so may impact the ability of students to be successful at school.

B ullying and peer harassment have long been anissue of concern for educators. Studies demon-strate that a significant proportion of adolescents areaffected by this problem.' 3 For example, a study bythe National Institute of Child Health and HumanDevelopment found that 17% of students in grades 6through 10 report being bullied and 19% report bully-Ing others "sometimes" or "weekly.- 4 More recently,the 2007 Bureau of Justice Statistics' Indicators ofSchool Crime and Safety Report reported that approx-imately 28% of students between 12 and 18 years ofage were bullied at school during the past 6 months. 5

Of those, 25% experienced it once or twice a month,I I% once or twice a week, and 8% almost daily.5

Cyberbullying is a unique form of bullying thathas gained a significant amount of attention in recentyears. Although an embryonic body of literature con-cerning cyberbullying and online harassment has beenestablished, most research has focused on identify-ing the prevalence of cyberbullying behaviors amongadolescent populations.'" No research to date hasexplored the relationship between cyberbullying andself-esteem, which seems a key construct to con-sider based on its relationship to traditional bully-ing, academic performance, criminal behavior, anda host of other factors associated with adolescentdevelopment. 2'14 In the text that follows, we brieflypresent what is known about cyberbullying and onlineharassment. Then, a short overview of self-esteemresearch is provided to highlight its significance to thiswork. Finally, methods, findings, and results of thisstudy are discussed in a way that can inform schoolpractice and policy.

Cyberbullying Among AdolescentsAs technology evolves, so do many of the prob-

lems faced by those who have access to it. Oneexample growing in scope and frequency is cyberbul-lying, defined as "willful and repeated harm inflictedthrough the use of computers, cell phones, and otherelectronic devices."'1 5'16 Although varying definitionshave been posited by scholars, 17' 6 we feel that thisparticular version is the most concise and comprehen-sive and captures the most important elements. First,cyberbullying is intentional, deliberate behavior car-ried out repeatedly over time. Second, the target ofcyberbullying experiences real, nontrivial pain (psy-chologically, emotionally, or relationally). Third, whatdistinguishes cyberbullying from traditional bullying isthat the former is carried out using various electronicdevices. In short, cyberbullying involves using commu-nication technology to harass, intimidate, threaten, orotherwise harm others. Common forms of cyberbully-Ing include sending threatening text messages, postinglibelous or malicious messages on social networkingsites such as MySpace or Facebook, or uploading

unflattering or humiliating pictures or videos to theInternet without permission.'15 ,7 6

In practice, cyberbullying behaviors are often similarto psychological, relational, and indirect forms oftraditional bullying (eg, rumor spreading, harassing,threatening, exclusion), although there are a numberof characteristics that differentiate the 2 forms.First, cyberbullies can remain "virtually" anonymousthrough the use of temporary/throwaway e-mailand instant messaging accounts, anonymizers, andpseudonyms in social networking sites, chat rooms,and on message boards.6 Despite this, research suggeststhat most victims know (or at least think they know)who is bullying them and that it is often someone fromwithin their social circle.15 Second, there are not anyregulatory bodies or authorities policing conversationsand interactions in cyberspace to ensure courtesy,thereby allowing inappropriate communication tocontinue unabated.1 5 Relatedly, many youth usecomputers outside the purview of parents, teachers, orother adults and therefore participate online withoutmuch (if any) supervision or specific guidance. 17

Finally, it seems much easier to be cruel and maliciousthrough a text message, e-mail, posted photo or video,or another form of digital harassment because ofthe physical distance separating the offender and thevictim, and the fact that personal and social norms,rules, morals, and law are rendered less relevant whenengaging in electronic communications.a,8S1 9

Estimates of the number of youth who experiencecyberbullying vary widely (ranging from 10% to 40%or more), depending on the age of the group studiedand how cyberbullying is formally defined.17 ,6,8,2'' 22

In one of the earliest works, Ybarra and Mitchell21

found that 19% of youth between the ages of 10 and17 had experienced cyberbullying either as a victinor offender. In 2005, data were collected from 3767middle school students from 6 schools and found that11.1% had been cyberbullied in the last 2 months,4.1% were cyberbullies and 6.8% were both a cyber-bullying victim and offender.6 More recently, datafrom 2007 pointed to almost 10% of middle schoolstudents indicating they had been cyberbullied in thelast 30 days, with around 17% experiencing cyberbul-lying over their lifetime. 15 In this same study, 8% hadcyberbullied others over the last 30 days, while 18%had done so over their lifetime.' 5

Adolescence and Self-EsteemAdolescence is a time when identity development

is particularly important.2 3 "26 During this period, theprocess of identity formation is largely dependent uponcues from the social environment (ie, societal stereo-types). Youth therefore tend to seek behaviors andsituations that help them value themselves positivelyand to avoid those who make them feel bad about who

they are. Overall, this ties into a child's perceptions andacceptance of his or her changing self and plays a crit-ical role in directing his or her personal and evenprofessional growth trajectory. 27

A significant body of evidence has accumulatedwhich demonstrates that experience with bullying hasa negative effect on adolescent development.1,28 '30

One such relationship that has garnered attention isthe effect of bullying on self-esteem. Rosenberg definedself-esteem as "a favorable or unfavorable attitudetoward the self.",31,3 Moreover, Leary and Dorns 32

consider self-esteem to be an internal representationof social acceptance and rejection and a psychologicalgauge monitoring the degree to which a personis included versus excluded by others. These 2conceptualizations underscore the fact that self-esteemis a perception-one's belief as to his or her personalvalue and affected by one's participation in the socialworld-where there are often interpersonal conflictsthat lead to behavior such as bullying.

The literature regarding bullying and self-esteemconsistently finds that victims of bullying tend to havelower self-esteem than nonvictims.33 37 The precisereasons for this relationship are far less agreed uponand clear. It may be that the experience of being vic-timized decreases one's self-esteem, or that those whohave low self-esteem are more likely to be targetedas victims.3 Interestingly, the relationship betweenbullying offending and self-esteem is much less con-sistent. Studies have found evidence to suggest thatbullies tend to have both higher 36,38 and lower39 "41

self-esteem than nonbullies. There is also researchindicating no significant difference between the self-esteem of bullies and nonbullies.4 2 Although thedirection of the relationship between bullying and self-esteem is not fully clarified by the available literature,research has consistently found that the relationshipto self-esteem, regardless of its direction, is weakeramong bullies than it is among victims.

Based on the literature reviewed above, we canbe fairly confident that experiences with traditionalbullying are associated with differential levels of self-esteem., Victims of bullying tend to have lower self-esteem than nonbullies, while the relationship withrespect to the bullies themselves is more variable.We therefore hypothesize similar relationships whenconsidering experiences with cyberbullying. Theresearch question, then, is: Do those who haveexperienced or participated in cyberbullying reportdiffering levels of self-esteem than those who havenot?

METHOD

SubjectsThe data for this study come from a survey

distributed in spring 20.07 to a random sample of

1963 students from 30 middle schools (sixth to eighthgrades) in one of the largest school districts in theUnited States. Youth were selected to participate if theywere enrolled in a district-wide peer conflict class thatall middle schoolers are required to take at some pointin their tenure-which provided an equal and randomchance for any student to be enrolled in the class whenthe survey was administered. Each school offers thepeer conflict class at each grade level and we targetedthe 3 grades (sixth, seventh, and eighth) at each school.As such, 3 classrooms (I for each grade) at each of the30 schools were included in the sampling frame.

Because students are randomly assigned to takethe peer conflict class, the sample obtained isexpected to represent the broader population of middleschool students in the district. When comparingthe demographic breakdown of respondents to thatof the overall district, the numbers were largelysimilar, although there were several demographiccharacteristics where our sample differed significantlyfrom the population (Table 1). We employed a 1-sample t test to determine the extent to which thesample was representative of the larger populationand found that the sample included significantly fewereighth graders, 11 -year-olds, 12 -year-olds, and Blackand Hispanic youth and significantly more seventhgraders, 14- through 16-year-olds, and multiracialyouth than the population as a whole. Despitethese differences, the sample was deemed diverse

and largely representative, thereby permitting furtheranalyses.

InstrumentAs explained above, the goal of this research is to

explore the extent to which cyberbullying is associatedwith low self-esteem. We utilized Rosenberg's (1965)validated measure of self-esteem, 43 which includes avariety of questions designed to estimate one's level ofself-esteem. Table 2 reports the items used to constructour measure of self-esteem. The response set for eachof these questions ranged from 1 to 4 (strongly disagreeto strongly agree). Items 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9 were recoded,so the self-esteem measure was a 10-item meanscore ranging from 1 to 4 (mean = 2.96; standarddeviation = 0.55) with higher values representinghigher self-esteem (Cronbach's a = .768).

The 2 primary independent variables in this studyreflect the respondent's experience with cyberbul-lying-both as a victim and as an offender. First,cyberbullying victimization represents the respondent'sexperience in the previous 30 days with 9 differentforms of online aggression (Table 3). Our cyberbul-lying victimization measure included a variety ofbehaviors ranging from relatively minor (receivingupsetting email from someone you do not know) tomore serious (something posted online about you thatyou did not want others to see). The response setfor these questions was never, once or twice, a fewtimes, many times, or every day. As such, our 9-itemsununary scale ranges from 0 to 36 (mean = 1.59;standard deviation = 3.05) with higher values rep-resenting more experience as a cyberbullying victim(Cronbach's a = .736).

The second independent variable, cyberbullyingoffending, represents the respondent's participation inthe previous 30 days with 5 different forms of onlineaggression (Table 4). Like the victimization measure,the response set for these questions was never, onceor twice, a few times, many times, or every day.Therefore, our 5-item summary scale ranges from0 to 20 (mean = 1.1$; standard deviation = 2.59)with higher values representing more participation

in cyberbullying offending behaviors (Cronbach'sa = .761).

The cyberbullying measures utilized were developedand refined over the course of 2 years to ensure thatthey were clearly worded, well defined, and capable ofcapturing the most relevant behaviors. In addition tothe strong internal consistency reported in this sample,similar reliability coefficients were found in our pretestof 266 students from 2 middle schools (Cronbach'sa- =.74 and .87 for the victimization and offendingscales, respectively). We also used factor analysis (prin-cipal components extraction with oblique rotation) toestablish construct validity and found that all victim-ization items loaded on 1 factor (loadings ranged from.504 to .599; eigenvalue = 2.92), and all offendingitems also loaded on 1 factor (loadings ranged from.615 to .800; eigenvalue = 2.62). One might arguethat certain behaviors that are not actually cyberbul-lying could fall within our specific operationalizationof the phenomenon. For example, one might receive"an upsetting e-mail" from a former romantic partnerwhich is not at all harassing in nature-although still

upsetting. Although we acknowledge that our measureis broad, we elected to include all of the individualmeasures to examine the experiences as generally aspossible, especially because all 9 questions loaded onthe same factor and demonstrated internal consistency.

In addition to these independent variables, we alsoinclude age, gender, and race in our models to con-trol for any effect these demographic features mayhave on our dependent variable. These are necessarybecause previous research has demonstrated impor-tant differences in self-esteem by age, gender, andrace. For example, Twenge and Campbell's meta-analysis 27 identified a positive relationship betweenage and self-esteem when the latter is measured byRosenbaum's scale.4 3 Moreover, a meta-analysis byKling et al144 found that males score minimally higheron measures of self-esteem than do females. Finally,Twenge and Crocker's meta-analysis45 found thatBlacks scored higher than Whites on self-esteem mea-sures, who scored higher than Hispanics and Asians.In this study, age is a continuous variable ranging from10 to 16 (mean = 12.8; standard deviation = 1.12);Gender was dichotomized into male respondents andfemale respondents (1 = male, 0 = female); race wasdichotomized into White and non-White (1 = White;0 = African American, Asian, Hispanic, or otherrace).

ProcedureThe questionnaire was administered to students by

teachers in' their peer conflict classes. Passive consentwas obtained from parents in the schools involved. Let-ters were sent home to parents explaining the natureand purpose of the project, and those parents whowished to have their child(ren) excluded were askedto indicate that preference on a form and return it tothe school. There was a 96% completion rate fromstudents who were not absent from school the day thesurvey was conducted. The 4% of the students whodid not complete surveys included 96 who partiallycompleted surveys and those who chose not to par-ticipate. Nonparticipants were asked to silently read,study, or work on other schoolwork.

Data AnalysisStatistical analyses were conducted using SPSS (ver-

sion 15.0; SPSS Inc.,. Chicago, IL). We first computeddescriptive statistics to better understand the natureof cyberbullying experienced and perpetrated by mid-die schoolers in this population. We then computeda series of ordinary least squares (OLS) regressionmodels to estimate the relationship between cyber-bullying victimization and offending and self-esteemwhile controlling for age, gender, and race. OLS regres-sion is appropriate given the continuous nature of thedependent variable. We also performed a number of

regression diagnostic analyses (reviewing correlationmatrices and computing variance inflation factor andtolerance statistics) to rule out multicollinearity andother potential threats to the statistical models. In allmodels, statistical significance was determined usingan alpha level of .05 (2-tailed tests).

RESULTS

Before presenting the results of the multivariateanalysis, it is useful to consider the findings from thedescriptive statistics. As noted in Table, 3, the mostcommon form of cyberbullying victimization reportedwas "Received an upsetting e-mail from someoneyou know" (18.3%). Also common was "Receivedan instant message that made you upset" (16%) or"Had something posted on your MySpace that madeyou upset" (14.2%). Less common, but still important,were a subsample of respondents (5.7%) whoindicated that they felt afraid to go on the computer.It also bears mentioning that just under 30% ofrespondents reported that they had experienced oneor more of the 9 types of cyberbullying 2 or more timesin the previous 30 days. This is important insofar ascyberbullying represents repeated behavior, not just asingular incident. Based on these results, then, about30% of our middle school sample has been the victimof some form of cyberbullying.

Similar findings were also noted when lookingat cyberbullying offending. As presented in Table 4,the most commonly reported form of cyberbullyingoffending was posting something online about anotherperson to make others laugh (23.! %). Fewer respon-dents admitted to sending computer text messages(13.7%) or e-mail (9.1%) to another person to makefun of them or to make them upset. Here again, about22% of respondents admitted to participating in oneor more of the 5 behaviors at least 2 or more times inthe previous 30 days.

The primary question of interest in this study, how-ever, was whether experience as a cyberbullying victimor offender is associated with differential levels ofself-esteem. The OLS regression analysis reported inTable 5 reveals a statistically significant relationshipbetween both cyberbullying victimization and offend-ing and self-esteem. More specifically, cyberbullyingvictims and offenders both have significantly lowerself-esteem than those who have not been cyberbul-lying victims or offenders. This persisted even whilecontrolling for gender, race, and age, although ourresults suggest that males, non-Whites, and older mid-die schoolers tend to have lower levels of self-esteemthan their peers. Based on the standardized regressioncoefficients and percent of variance explained in mod-els 2 and 3, the relationship between cyberbullyingvictimization and self-esteem is stronger than that ofcyberbullying offending and self-esteem.

DISCUSSION

Based on these analyses and consistent with expec-tations, cyberbullying was found to be correlated withlower self-esteem. Although previous research haspointed to the negative emotional and psychologi-cal effects of cyberbullying victimization,15,20 ,21 thisstudy is important insofar as it is the first to isolate lowself-esteem as a potential outcome. Through its exclu-sive focus on the relationship between self-esteem andcyberbullying, this work provides additional evidencethat electronic forms of adolescent aggression requirethe attention of educators and other youth-servingadults. Experience with cyberbullying, both as a victimand as an offender, was associated with significantlylower levels of self-esteem, even after controlling fordemographic differences. As such, it is important foreducators to make an effort to prevent and respond toall forms of bullying-whether it is manifested in fist-fights on school campuses or through disparaging andthreatening instant messages in cyberspace, becauseboth directly or indirectly affect the climate of theschool and the well-being of the youth involved.

These results are also significant because duringthe late 1970s and early 1980s, educators began torecognize that low self-esteem was one of the primarypredictors of many adolescent problems that directlyand indirectly affected school health by impactingthe overall academic and behavioral performanceof students.27 Specifically, previous research hasshown a weak to moderate correlation betweenself-esteem and academic achievement, absenteeism,poor health, criminal behavior, and other problematicconsequences.

LimitationsDespite the contributions of this work, some lim-

itations must be acknowledged. First, the samplingtechniques employed do not facilitate precise gener-alizations to the universe of public school studentsin the United States, as a probability sampling tech-nique of the entire nation was not possible for thisstudy. Future research should replicate this study

in other districts or a more broadly representativesample. Another limitation is that the data werecross-sectional in nature. As a result, we are unable toensure proper temporal ordering of the independentand dependent variables and therefore do not knowwith certainty whether experience with cyberbullyingcauses decreases in one's level of self-esteem, or if stu-dents with low self-esteem are more often targets of,or involved in, cyberbullying.

Finally, it is also important to point out the inher-ent limitations of asking adolescents to self-report theirbehaviors. For example, participation in cyberbullyingmay have been underreported because of the tendencyof individuals to provide socially desirable answers. 4 7

Some scholars argue that data stemming from indi-viduals' recollection about the past--"retrospectivedata"-is inherently unreliable because of the ten-dency for them to misrepresent or distort factsfrom a previous time period.48 -50 These limitationsnotwithstanding, this study was executed withinthe parameters of typical social scientific researchstandards.

IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

It is imperative that school health professionalsidentify and intervene in cyberbullying incidents.Results of this work point to at least 1 psychologicalproblem (ie, lower self-esteem) associated with cyber-bullying experiences, and previous research suggeststhat there are other co-occurring problematic behav-iors or dysfunctions. School officials are sometimesreluctant to get involved in incidents that frequentlyoriginate or occur away from campus, but failure todo so could place students at risk for multiple devel-opmental issues. Without question, district personnelhave a clear and court-endorsed role in addressingonline harassment by contacting parents and disciplin-ing students when their off-campus behavior results ina substantial disruption of the learning environment atschool.' 5 School health professionals can also serve asadvocates for those who are cyberbullied by teachingways to deflect or shrug off minor forms (eg, blocking

harassing text messages, logging off when tempers startto flare, not responding to hurtful messages).

Additionally, school officials may be able to offsetsome of the negative effects of cyberbullying byworking to develop high self-esteem in students.Many districts have begun to implement programmingthat seeks to bolster the self-worth of children,and Haney and Durlak's meta-analysis showed thatthese interventions can be effective, 5 1

cyberbullying and low self-esteem among adolescentscan be jointly addressed through the creation and useof peer support programs. 54

involves enlisting the help of youth themselves inaddressing interpersonal problems among their peergroup and training them in areas of empathy, conflictresolution, and nonviolent problem solving. 57 Overalland over time, this tends to promote a protectivenetwork where students are willing to help each otherout 56 ', 8 -60 _which seems especially important in atenuous developmental stage where peer perceptionsoften dictate self-worth to a large degree.32'61 63
