Second Sunday in Lent The readings for the Second Sunday of Lent raise the importance of trust in our relationship with God. The spiritual journey of faith demands a level of trust and dependency that is modeled to us by Abraham and by Jesus’ disciples. The first reading from the Book of Genesis is the call of Abraham. The call of Abraham was so central to how Israel understood itself, that the Jewish scribes who put the Book of Genesis together in its final form around 400 BC felt it was essential to preserve in their sacred Scriptures each version of the four calls of Abraham. For the Israelites living during the period of the Monarchy, the call of Abraham in Genesis 12 spoke to their times. Israel had truly become a “great nation,” united under a single Monarchy and a single king, David. The covenant with Abraham likely was viewed as fulfilled as the people of Israel were “blessed” with land and descendents that had elevated Israel to a status among the nations unknown in their past. Israel in the tenth century BC looked back at the call of Abraham and saw him as their great patriarch who was the first to trust God to be the guide for his people, and in doing so, was richly rewarded. In the Gospel reading, we hear Matthew’s account of the transfiguration of Jesus. Like the story of Jesus’ temptation in the desert heard last Sunday, the setting and details of this story surely resonated with the Jewish Christians of Matthew’s community. The setting on a high mountain, the presence of Moses, the overshadowing cloud, and Jesus’ transfigured face and clothes would have conjured up images of Exodus 19–24, where Moses receives the law on Mount Sinai. Matthew’s community members would have been very receptive to hearing about Jesus in the context of their own traditional sacred stories. But Matthew is interested in more than just preserving this Transfiguration story with details familiar to the community members. Matthew is teaching his community that God is doing something new: God’s definitive revelation now lies with his beloved Son, the new lawgiver. Just as God had once called Abraham to trust him, God now calls the three disciples (Peter, James, and John) to trust the words of his beloved Son: “Listen to him.” As our Lenten journey continues, we can turn to the words Jesus spoke to the disciples who were clearly frightened at witnessing Jesus’ transfiguration: “Rise, and do not be afraid.”
