Parish Mission Statement Our Lady of Good Counsel parish is a Roman Catholic Community of Faith founded by the Augustinian Friars in 1899. Called by God to proclaim and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our celebration of the Word and Sacraments. Guided by the life of Christ, joined in Baptism, and inspired by the Grace of the Holy Spirit, we strive to embody the presence of God in the world today through worship, outward discipleship, and service. We are rich in diversity and welcome others in a spirit of acceptance, hospitality, and fellowship.

From the Pastor’s Desk Fourth Sunday of Advent
Theme: Reconciliation at Christmas
In the beginning, God created heaven and earth. He made man and woman as the crown
of his creation. There was harmony everywhere. Mankind enjoyed such harmony with
God, that God was depicted as walking in the garden of Eden with him in the evenings.
Mankind also enjoyed complete harmony with himself and with the entire order of
creation: the elements, land, sea and the sky, the animal world and the plant world. None
of these were hostile to him, and he was master over them all.
Then tragedy struck. Mankind fell from grace to grass. Sin cut him off from God. He was
no longer a friend of God, and he could not stand the sight of God, because, he said, he
was naked. Sin also introduced disharmony between man and man, woman and woman.
The immediate result of that was the sin of Cain against his brother Abel. “Homo homini
lupus.” Man becomes wolves to man. continued on page 3

Tema: La Reconciliacion en Navidad
En el principio, Dios creó el cielo y la tierra. Hizo al hombre y la mujer como la corona
de su creación. Había armonía por todas partes. La humanidad disfrutó de tanta armonía
con Dios, que se representó a Dios caminando en el jardín del Edén con él por las noches.
La humanidad también disfrutó de una completa armonía consigo mismo y con todo el
orden de la creación: los elementos, la tierra, el mar y el cielo, el mundo animal y el
mundo vegetal. Ninguno de estos le era hostil, y él era el maestro de todos ellos.
Entonces la tragedia golpeó. La humanidad cayó de la gracia a la hierba. El pecado lo
apartó de Dios. Ya no era un amigo de Dios, y no podía soportar la vista de Dios, porque,
dijo, estaba desnudo. El pecado también introdujo la falta de armonía entre el hombre y el
hombre, la mujer y la mujer. El resultado inmediato de eso fue el pecado de Caín contra

Marriage / Matrimonio:

No terminó ahí. El pecado también trajo la falta de armonía entre
el hombre y todo el orden creado. Esto ya no era benévolo para él.
De hecho, comenzó la hostilidad. Esto se puede ver en el curso
que Dios le dio al hombre después de su caída. Dios dijo:
“¡Acusado sea el suelo por tu culpa! Con mucho dolor obtendrás
tu comida mientras vivas. Te dará zarzas y cardos. Con el sudor de

Cuando Jesús nació en nuestro mundo, parte de su misión, de
hecho, su misión principal, fue la reconciliación. Su misión era
reconciliar a la humanidad con Dios, la humanidad con Él y la
humanidad con el resto de la creación. Pero el mayor acto de
reconciliación realizado en la primera Navidad fue el de Dios y la
humanidad. Dios no solo se contentó con venir a caminar con el
hombre en un jardín como lo hizo una vez en el Edén. Esta vez,
Dios se hizo hombre. Él tomó carne humana. Por lo tanto, no
podría haber mayor restauración de la armonía entre Dios y el
hombre que ésta. La palabra (es decir, Dios se hizo carne (es decir,
el hombre). Jesús completó su misión de reconciliación con su
muerte en la cruz y su resurrección de entre los muertos.
Por lo tanto, la misión de la Iglesia y nuestra propia reconciliación
se derivan y continúan con la misión de reconciliación de Jesús,
que comenzó en Su nacimiento hace más de dos mil años. Al
celebrar la Navidad de este año, es bueno que reflexionemos sobre
la misión de reconciliación de Cristo y de la Iglesia. Esa misión
sigue siendo válida y urgente hoy en nuestra comunidad de
Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo. En nuestras familias, y en
nuestros lugares de trabajo. Hagamos de estas palabras nuestras
propias Navidades, "La paz os dejo, mi paz os doy". (Juan 14:27)
Nuestra misión de reconciliación no se agota a nivel global. ¡No!
Hay que bajarlo al nivel local. A nuestros vecinos inmediatos.
¿Hay alguien en nuestra comunidad con quien necesitamos
reconciliarnos? Si la hay, la Navidad es una gran fiesta de
reconciliación. Si no conseguimos reconciliarnos en Navidad,
entonces nuestra Navidad será seriamente defectuosa y deficiente.
Finalmente, nuestra misión de reconciliación debe extenderse a
quienes nos rodean (a los miembros de nuestra familia inmediata),
quienes pueden estar en conflicto entre sí. El Señor, el primer
reconciliador, espera que hagamos lo que podamos para
reconciliar a esas personas. No debemos mirar hacia otro lado, y
pretender que no es nuestro asunto. Es nuestro negocio y,
nuevamente, la Navidad nos brinda la oportunidad de llevar a cabo
el negocio.
Para una Navidad pacífica, seamos reconciliados con Dios.
Hagamos lo que podamos para traer a otros a la reconciliación con
Dios. Oremos por la reconciliación global. Pero más cerca de casa,
busquemos la reconciliación con aquellos en nuestra comunidad
con quienes tenemos una pelea o desacuerdo, y promovamos la
reconciliación entre las personas que nos rodean y que sabemos
que no están en paz entre nosotros.
Les deseo a todos una Feliz Navidad y un apacible Año Nuevo.

(Continued from page 1) It did not end there. Sin also brought disharmony between
man and the entire created order. This was no longer benevo-
lent to him. In fact, hostility set in. This can be seen from the course God gave man after his fall. God said: “Accused be
the soil because of you! Painfully will you get your food
from it as long as you live. It will yield you brambles and
thistles. By the sweat of your face will you earn your food…
(Gen.3: 17-19).
When Jesus was born into our world, part of his mission,
indeed his main mission, was reconciliation. His mission was
to reconcile mankind with God, mankind with Himself, and
mankind with the rest of creation. But the greatest act of
reconciliation wrought at the first Christmas was that between God and mankind. God was not just content in
coming down to walk with man in a garden as he once did in
Eden. This time around, God became man. He took human
flesh. Therefore, there could be no greater restoration of
harmony between God and man than this one. The word
(i.e. God became flesh (i.e. Man). Jesus completed his
mission of reconciliation by his death on the cross and his
resurrection from the dead.
Therefore, the Church’s mission and our own reconciliation
derives from and continues Jesus’ own mission of reconcilia-tion, which had its beginning at His birth more than two
thousand years ago. As we celebrate this year’s Christmas, it
is good that we reflect on Christ’s and the Church’s mission
of reconciliation. That mission remains valid and urgent
today in our community of Our Lady of Good Counsel. In
our families, and our places of work. Let us make these
words our own this Christmas, “Peace I leave with you, My
peace I give you.” (John 14:27)
Our mission of reconciliation is not exhausted at the global
level. No! We must bring it down to the local level. To our immediate neighbors. Is there anyone in our community that
we need to be reconciled with? If there is, Christmas is a big
feast of reconciliation. If we fail to reconcile at Christmas,
then our Christmas will be seriously defective and deficient.
Finally, our mission of reconciliation must extend to those
around us (our immediate family members), who may be in
conflict with one another. The Lord, the prime reconciler,
expects us to do whatever we can to reconcile such people.
We must not look the other way, and pretend that it is not our
business. It is very much our business, and Christmas again, affords us an opportunity to carry out the business.
For a peaceful Christmas, let us be reconciled with God. Let
us do what we can to bring others to reconciliation with God.
Let us pray for global reconciliation. But closer to home, let
us seek reconciliation with those in our community with
whom we have a quarrel or disagreement, and let us promote
reconciliation among persons around us whom we know are
not at peace with one another.
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas’s and a peaceful New year.
