Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: “Priority and Values in Life”
This Sunday we are called as Christians to reflect on what matters in our daily life. If you like
you could name it, “Scale of Preference.” By dictionary definition, scale of preference is the
list of wants or needs that a person writes or comes up with in order of importance. Here, the
person puts his or her most pressing needs or wants at the top of the list and then the less
important needs go to the bottom of the list. My dear brothers and sisters, may I ask you to-
day what is more crucial in your life? Could it be your wife, husband, children, money,
power, high esteem, the death of your enemy, God? … Solomon in our first reading today has
a lot to teach us.
God appears to Solomon in a dream with an offer he can’t refuse. “Ask of me anything and I
will give it to you.” Talk about a blank check! God will give Solomon anything. Money,
power, sex, popularity or beauty can be his for the asking. However, Solomon wants none of
those from God. His first response is crucial—“I am a youth, not knowing at all how to ask.”
Solomon is aware of his limitations. This self-knowledge is the key to his asking for the right
thing from the God who can give him anything. Continued on page 3

Decimoséptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Tema: “Prioridad y Valores en la Vida”
Este domingo estamos llamados como cristianos a reflexionar sobre lo que importa en nuestra
vida diaria. Si lo desea, puede nombrarlo, "Escala de preferencia". Por definición del diccion-
ario, la escala de preferencia es la lista de deseos o necesidades que una persona escribe o
plantea en orden de importancia. Aquí, la persona coloca sus necesidades o deseos más apre-
miantes en la parte superior de la lista y luego las necesidades menos importantes van al final
de la lista. Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¿puedo preguntarles hoy qué es más crucial
en su vida? ¿Podría ser tu esposa, esposo, hijos, dinero, poder, alta estima, la muerte de tu
enemigo, Dios? ... Salomón en nuestra primera lectura de hoy tiene mucho que enseñarnos.
Dios se le aparece a Salomón en un sueño con una oferta que no puede rechazar. "Pídeme
algo y te lo daré". ¡Habla sobre un cheque en blanco! Dios le dará a Salomón cualquier cosa.
El dinero, el poder, el sexo, la popularidad o la belleza pueden ser suyos. Sin embargo,
Salomón no quiere ninguno de esos de Dios. Su primera respuesta es crucial: "Soy un joven,
sin saber en absoluto cómo preguntar". Salomón es consciente de sus limitaciones. Este auto-

Porque aunque Salomón es joven y tiene la asombrosa
responsabilidad de suceder al Rey David, él sabe lo que realmente
necesita: “Dale a tu siervo un corazón para entender cómo
discernir entre el bien y el mal, para quién podría gobernar a tu
pueblo tan maravilloso. ? El poder y la popularidad son fugaces.
La belleza finalmente se marchita con el tiempo, el dinero y el
sexo no sirven de nada frente a la muerte. Pero tener un corazón
comprensivo, uno que busque hacer la voluntad de Dios, es tener
un tesoro que nunca envejezca y que produzca la verdadera paz y
felicidad.
Salomón se encontró en una situación muy parecida a la nuestra.
Tenía que elegir entre una necesidad real y una multitud de deseos
competitivos. ¿Y no es este un aspecto clave de la vida moderna:
necesidades y deseos? Deberíamos tratar de distinguir las
necesidades de los deseos. Cada día estamos constantemente bajo
la influencia de anuncios para confundir necesidades con deseos.
Se nos dice que debemos usar este producto si queremos ser
felices. ¡Sin este coche, esta ropa o esa relación no seremos
humanos! Solomon podría haber pedido lo que quisiera. Pero él
sabía lo que necesitaba para enfrentar el desafío del liderazgo.
Desafortunadamente, nos encontramos en una situación muy
similar a la que Jesús describe en nuestra lectura del evangelio. A
menudo sentimos que la vida es “como una red de arrastre arrojada
al mar que trae una gran cantidad de peces.” El desafío es sentarse
y “recoger los buenos en una canasta y tirar los que no sirven.”
Nuevamente, esto es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo. ¿Es de extrañar
que encontremos a los jóvenes (y los no tan jóvenes) involucrados
en un comportamiento tan destructivo?
A los jóvenes se les dice constantemente que el camino hacia la
felicidad se encuentra en el atractivo de sus cuerpos, como ponerse
tatuajes. En todo esto se ignora la dimensión espiritual de nuestra
existencia. Al final nos quedamos decepcionados y aburridos.
Tenemos un dolor vacío en el interior porque hemos llegado a
poseer a muchos, pero nos falta el que solo puede descansar
nuestro corazón inquieto y nutrir el alma de nuestra condición
“sin alma.”
La vida contemporánea es, en muchos sentidos, una búsqueda de
significado: “para el tesoro escondido en el campo.” No es obvio

bien, Dios coopera con todos los que lo aman, vale la pena a todos

negocio arriesgado; convirtiendo todo al bien, pero Dios nunca nos
abandonará. Nuestro descanso se encuentra con la gracia salvadora
de Dios. Cada día Dios llega a conocer nuestras necesidades.

For although Solomon is young and has the awesome
responsibility of succeeding King David, he knows what he
truly needs: “Give your servant a heart to understand how to
discern between good and evil, for who could govern this
people of yours that is so great?” Power and popularity are
fleeting. Beauty ultimately withers under time, money and
sex are of no avail in the face of death. But to have an
understanding heart, one that seeks to do the will of God, is
to have a treasure that never grows old and which yields
true peace and happiness.
Solomon found himself in a situation much like our own.
He had to choose between a real need and a multitude of
competing wants. And isn’t this a key aspect of modern
life—needs and wants? We should try to distinguish needs
from wants. Each day we are constantly under the influence
of advertisements to confuse needs with wants. We are told
that we must use this product if we are to be happy. Without
this car, these clothes or that relationship we will not be
human! Solomon could have requested anything he wanted.
But he knew what he needed in order to face the challenge
of leadership.
Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a situation much like
Jesus describes in our gospel reading. We often feel that life
is “like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all
sorts of fish.” The challenge is to sit down and “collect the
good ones in a basket and throw away those that are of no
use.” Again, this is easier said than done. Is it any wonder
that we find the young (and the not so young) involved in so
much destructive behavior?
The young are being constantly told that the road to
happiness is found in the attractiveness of their bodies like
putting on tattoos. Ignored in all this is the spiritual
dimension of our existence. In the end we are left
disappointed and bored. We have an empty ache inside
because we have come to possess the many, but we are
lacking the One who alone can rest our restless heart and
nourish the soul of our “soulless” condition.
Contemporary life is in many ways a search for meaning—
“for the treasure hidden in the field.” It is not obvious. The
Kingdom is often buried. More people listen to reggae,
Broadway shows, high life music, than to the good news or
going to Mass on Sundays. Now that Covid-19 has
introduced “Zoom” Mass, it is going to be better to watch
Mass on TV than being present at Sunday Masses. So many
things in the market place promises us the good life. Jesus
promises us not the good life in this passing world, but
eternal life. Of course, it begins here on earth depending on
the choices we make.
In the words of St. Paul, “We know that by turning
everything to their good, God cooperates with all those who
love Him, worth all those he has called according to his
purpose.” This is risky business; turning everything to the
good—but God will never abandon us. Our rest is met by
God’s saving grace. Each day God comes to know our
needs. Let us ask for the right stuff.

OLGC Religious Education Registration
Our Lady of Good Counsel Religious Education Program is
accepting registrations for the 2020/2021 program.
OLGC religious education families received re-registration forms in the
mail. Please return completed forms via mail or in person at the parish
office as soon as possible.
New families: Registration forms can be picked up and dropped off at
the parish office. The completed registration form, a copy of the birth
certificate, and copies of certificates of sacraments received, along with
the registration fee is to be submitted at the time of registration.
Attention Parents of All Academy Students: If your child is entering the 2nd or 7th grade this fall, you must register
your child to receive the Sacraments of Communion or Confirmation.
Please pick up the yellow registration form at the parish office.
*Our program is a PreK-8th grade Religious Education Program: All
children who attend Public School should attend Religious Education
classes each year.
