My Dear Parish Family

What a wonderful celebration we had last Sunday and what a tremen-dous blessing the day turned out to be.

The Parish Golden Jubilee Mass with Bishop Michael Barber as the presider, and the reception in the parish hall went very well. So many joyful memories will stay with us, and countless pictures will carry on those memories for years to come.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The French Revolution is hardly a “treasure” in our story, yet in 1789 it began to dismantle the way the world was orga-nized: feudalism. The collapsed society had three basic divi-sions: those who work, those who fight, and those who pray. There wasn’t a great deal of movement among the ranks, yet one way to move out of the workers and the fighters was in the direction of the folks who prayed. These were the First Estate, the clergy. One of the key persons in any manor or village was the priest. He could read, at least a bit, and so was the source for pronouncements and news from government and Church. He was assigned to celebrate the sacraments frequently and in con-formance with certain rules. Seminaries did not exist before the Reformation. Astute Protestant reformers then forced the Catholic world toward a more educated and able clergy. Before that, young men appren-ticed with a priest to learn the essentials, and would be present-ed to the bishop for ordination. Other priests emerged from the university system, where students were required to be invested as clerics. Still others were monks, ordained not so much for ministry outside the monastic walls, but to offer Mass only for the intentions of the community’s benefactors.

Q. How do I address a bishop?

A. In spoken conversation, you would call your bishop "Bishop (last name)" or "Your Excellency." In opening a letter, you would put "Dear Bishop (last name)" or "Your Excellency" ("Dear" is not used in front of "Your [title]"). In ad-dressing an envelope you would put on the first line "The Most Rev. (full name)" and on the second line "Bishop of (diocese)." Archbishops follow the same protocol as bishops. Cardi-nals are addressed as "Cardinal (last name)" or "Your Em-inence." Letters to cardinals open "Dear Cardinal (last name)" or "Your Eminence." In addressing the envelope the first line would read "(first name) Cardinal (last name)" or "Cardinal (full name)"; the second line would read "Archbishop (or Bishop) of (archdiocese or diocese)." commandments 4–10, which deal with how to treat other people. (Matt. 25:32–33) and they are saved by the blood that he shed for them (Matt. 26:28).
