  • CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SUNDAY September 10 / 13, 2020

  • Zion Ev. Lutheran Church 6430 Hwy. D Allenton, Wisconsin 53002

Members of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS)

Steven D. Bode, pastor e-mail: [email protected]

Welcome to God’s House The Pentecost season is all about Christ’s Church growing through his Word and

Sacrament. It’s not growth necessarily in numbers, but in faith. As we renew our

focus on Christian Education today, we will be reminded that the Lord’s mercies are

new every morning, which motivates us to use his Word and Sacrament to keep

growing in the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

    ORDER OF SERVICE

Opening Hymn Every Morning Mercies New CW #580:1-2

    http://www.zionallenton.org/

  • Greeting M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of

the Holy Spirit be with you.

    C: And also with you.

Responsive Dialogue selected verses from Psalm 34 M: Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

C: Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths. M: I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.

C: Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths. M: My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.

C: Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths.

Confession of Sins M: In the name of our God, to whom all hearts are open and from whom no

secrets are hidden, let us confess our sins and plead for his mercy.

C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and repentant sinner, confess

that I have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have

not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I am

distressed by the sins that trouble me and am deeply sorry for them. M: Jesus says to his people: “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.” His

death paid for the guilt of our sins and the sins of the whole world. Because

of his promise, I forgive you all your sins. Be assured that you are a dear child

of God and an heir of eternal life. Peace be with you. Amen.

  • Song of Praise Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing CW # 340:1, 5, 6

Prayer of the Day M: Almighty God, you give wisdom and knowledge. Help us to study your Word

diligently and to grow in all that is good. Support all who teach and all who

learn, that together we may know and follow your ways; through Jesus Christ

    our Lord.

    C: Amen.

Scripture Lesson Deuteronomy 6:4-9 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all

your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments

that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk

about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie

down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on

  • your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

    Hymn Response Lord Jesus Christ, the Children’s Friend ST. CRISPIN ♫ Lord Jesus Christ, the children’s friend, to each of them your presence send;

    Call them by name and keep them true in loving faith, dear Lord, to you. In Christian homes, Lord, let them be your blessing to their family;

Let Christian schools your work extend in living truth as you intend. That caring parents, gracious Lord, and faithful teachers find reward

In leading these, to whom you call, to find in Christ their all in all.

Gospel Mark 10:13-16 13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them,

but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said

to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the

kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not

receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the

children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. M: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

  • Hymn Let Children Hear the Mighty Deeds #512:1-3

    Sermon Deuteronomy 11:18-20

Confession of Faith The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy

Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died,

and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the

dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father

almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

  • Offering

The members of Zion have joined together to do the Lord's work in this community and around the world.

If you are a visitor, please don’t feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry.

Prayer of the Church Dear Lord, you grew up in the home of Joseph and Mary and as a twelve year – old

boy, sat in the Temple courts listening to the teachers and asking questions. We

thank you for Christian parents, teachers and pastors, who taught us to know and

love you. Bless Christian parents and teachers today as they lead their children to

trust and follow you as their best and kindest friend. Lord you chose twelve disciples to follow and learn from you. You revealed sacred

truth and sent them as your apostles into the world. We thank you for the many

opportunities you give to grow in your holy Word, opportunities to assure us of

your forgiveness and constant presence. Teach us to believe your promises and

obey your will so that our lives may reflect the beauty of your teachings. Bless the teaching and learning that goes on here at Zion, especially in our Sunday

School, catechism instructions and bible studies. Instill us with a longing to explore

the truths of your Word and the mysteries of your grace. May they serve as useful

tools in the teaching and training of both young and old. Encourage all of us – both

young and old - to make use of the opportunities we have to grow in grace and in

the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Special prayers and intercessions May your peace, which transcends all understanding, guard our hearts and minds in

Christ Jesus, in whose name we further pray…

    The Lord’s Prayer

C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,

    thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

    and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the

  • kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

    The Sacrament

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up unto the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.

Words of Institution M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he

had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take and

eat. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it

all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you

for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of

    me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

    C: Amen.

    O Christ, Lamb of God

  • Distribution Hymn Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Prepared CW #312 Lord Jesus Christ, you have prepared this feast for our salvation;

It is your body and your blood, and at your invitation

As weary souls, with sin oppressed, we come to you for needed rest,

For comfort, and for pardon. Although you did to heav’n ascend, where angel hosts are dwelling,

And in your presence they behold your glory, all excelling,

And though your people shall not see your glory and your majesty

Till dawns the judgment morning, Yet, Savior, you are not confined to any habitation,

But you are present ev’rywhere and with your congregation.

Firm as a rock this truth shall stand, unmoved by any daring hand

Or subtle craft and cunning. We eat this bread and drink this cup, your precious Word believing

That your true body and your blood our lips are here receiving.

This Word remains forever true, and there is naught you cannot do,

For you, Lord, are almighty. Though reason cannot understand, yet faith this truth embraces:

Your body, Lord, is ev’rywhere at once in many places.

    I leave to you how this can be; your Word alone suffices me;

  • I trust its truth unfailing. Lord, I believe what you have said; help me when doubts assail me.

Remember that I am but dust, and let my faith not fail me.

Your supper in this vale of tears refreshes me and stills my fears

And is my priceless treasure. Grant that we worthily receive your supper, Lord, our Savior,

And, truly grieving for our sins, may prove by our behavior

That we are thankful for your grace and day by day may run our race,

In holiness increasing. For your consoling supper, Lord, be praised throughout all ages!

Preserve it, for in ev’ry place the world against it rages.

Grant that this sacrament may be a blessed comfort unto me

    When living and when dying.

After the distribution, the minister says:

M: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in

the true faith until life everlasting. Depart in peace. Amen.

Prayer M: We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this holy

supper. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and

increase our love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ,

our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

    forever.

    C: Amen.

The Blessing M: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.

  • C: Amen.

member and you like to commune with us in the future, please speak to the pastor

after the service. In Our Prayers Herbie Justman, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend; also Dan

Heinecke, recovering from hip replacement surgery at Cedar Lake Campus. Church Picnic Fellowship We won’t be having a picnic in the true sense of the

word, but after each service this morning you are invited to stay a bit for some

fellowship and refreshments. Please join us! We thank our evangelism committee –

Steve, Vicki & Robin, for the planning and our Council members for helping set

everything up for outdoor worship. Worship Schedule Change From now until Memorial Day weekend next year our

worship schedule moves back to the normal schedule for the school year.

Thursdays remain the same – at 7:00 p.m.; the Sunday early service remains the

same – 7:30 a.m.; but the “late” service goes back to 9:45 a.m. Back to Sunday School This year we’ve had a very difficult time finding Sunday

School teachers who are willing to volunteer their time and talents to fill our

teaching needs. Because of that fact, as well as a number of additional challenges

that Covid brings, we have decided to go the route of a virtual Sunday School to

begin. Parents of Sunday School children should have received an e-mail on Friday

  • with a little introduction (if you did not, please share your e-mail address with Janet

Salzmann at [email protected] or Pastor Bode at [email protected].

After the worship services this morning, you will be able to pick up your child(ren’s)

lesson packets along with some simple instructions on how to get started. If you

have any questions, please ask. God’s blessings as you (parents) get to spend some

time in God’s Word with your child(ren). It’s time well-spent! Join the Team! As you just read, we could still use a couple of Sunday School

teachers and some substitutes. You already have the necessary qualifications – a

love for your Savior and a love for children – consider using your talents to

contribute to our ministry here at Zion and grow in your faith at the same time.

Contact Pastor Bode if you are interested ([email protected] / 262.483.0407). Bible Study Due to the fellowship time after church this week, our adult bible

study will begin next Sunday, September 20th at 8:45 a.m. If you want some good

reasons for why you should go, check the newsletter. We thank Liz Dettmann (Thursday) and Barb Olsen (Sunday) for serving as our

accompanist for our worship services this weekend. The flowers on the altar today were placed to God’s glory by Joy Pamperin on the

occasion of her mother Sandy’s birthday; by Judy Etta in memory of her father

Harry’s birthday; and in memory of Jack and Alice Walters by the Walters and

Zalewski families. College Student Parents Do you have college-aged children away at college

somewhere this fall? Please send a current address and contact information for

them to the church office. You can call 629-5914 or e-mail Pastor Bode at
