Heaven ShinesThe sky is beaming, so bright and clear;even more brightly do your eyes beam at me.You, my rose, gaze into my eyes,so that I bless you in my happiness.

The little bird’s song resounds with such loveliness, yet my darling sings a much sweeter song. You, my rose, gaze into my eyes,so that I bless you in my happiness.

The sun kisses the entire world, yet your rosy lips kiss me even more warmly. You, my rose, gaze into my eyes,so that I bless you in my happiness.

Justify Me, God (Psalm 43)Do me justice, o God, and fight my fightagainst a faithless people;from the deceitful and impious man rescue me.For you, o God, are my strength. Why do you keep me so far away? Why must I go about in mourning,With the enemy oppressing me?Send forth your light and your truth;they shall lead me onAnd bring me to your holy mountain,to your dwelling place. Then will I go in to the altar of God,the God of my gladness and joy; Then will I give you thanks upon the harp, my GodWhy are you so downcast, o my soul? And why do you sigh within me?Hope in God! Then I will again give him thanks,In the presence of my saviorand my God.

Shout to the Lord, All the EarthMake a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

SCHUBERT & FREUNDEHimmel Strahlt so Helle und Klar is the third of Johannes Brahms’ (1833-1897) Zigeunerlieder (“Gypsy songs”), a set of songs for 4 voices and piano. The texts are originally from traditional Hungarian folk tunes, adapted into German by Hugo Conrat (1845–1906), a poet in Vienna. Throughout the piece, Brahms captures the Romantic preoccupation with love and nature, as the poet continually compares their love to the beauty of nature, and finds nature eclipsed by the lover’s eyes, singing, and kisses.

Athough often remembered for his large-scale works (Elijah, Italian Symphony), Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) also composed a number of sacred motets, including Richte mich, Gott and Jauchzet dem Herrn, Alle Welt. Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg, Germany, and was trained in music from a young age alongside his sister, Fanny Mendelssohn. His family was Jewish, but he was raised as a Christian by his father who converted to Christianity. One of his responsibilities as head of the Berlin Academy of the Arts was to conduct the Berlin cathedral choir, for which he wrote a number of sacred pieces.

Richte, mich Gott and Jauchzet dem Herrn together portray the extremes of emotion. Richte, mich Gott calls for God’s justice; it begins in a minor key, with the Psalmist feeling isolated from God and beset by enemies. However, by the end the piece has transitioned into a major key, with the Psalmist promising to trust in God through an increasingly emphatic Harre auf Gott! (Hope in the Lord!). In a stark contrast, Jauchzet dem Herrn, begins with a similar declamation in the voices, but is instead an

exclamation of joy and praise. Throughout the piece, Mendelssohn creates aural pictures, with light, lilting melodies for Schafen seiner Weide (sheep of his pasture) and expansive chords for für und für (forever and ever).

Elegischer Gesang (Elegy Song), Op. 118, is a short work by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) scored for string quartet and four voices. The text was written by Ignaz Franz Castelli (1781–1862), an Austrian dramatist. Although not published until 1826, it dates from 1814 and is dedicated to Beethoven’s friend and patron Baron Johann Baptist von Pasqualati of Osterberg, whose wife Eleonore had died in 1811 at only 24 years old. It is one of Beethoven’s least known works, but is poignant in its dramatic dynamics and chromaticism to portray the pain of a life cut short.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was just 18 when he composed his second mass, the Mass in G major. It was finished in six days during March 1815, for a performance in the Lichtenthal church. While the text is mostly that of the traditional Roman Catholic Mass, scholar Dennis Shrock comments, “Unique to Schubert, portions of the Gloria and Credo texts in all the [six Latin] masses are varied: individual words are repeated, the standard order of phrases is interchanged, and, most striking, some words and phrases are deleted. The deletions—such as Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris (who sits at the right hand of the Father) and Credo in unam sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam (I believe in one holy, catholic, and apostolic church) from the Credo—are intriguing and inexplicable.” Another notable musicologist, Nick Strimple, notes,

PROGRAM NOTES

CantabileSingers.org

“Schubert was a freethinker, and this attitude is obvious in his liturgical works.”

While many masses begin with a furious demand for mercy, Schubert’s Kyrie is homophonic and gently lyrical. The “Christe” section begins with an expressive soprano solo, and the chorus enters to finish the section and the movement. The Gloria is in D Major, triumphant in tone, but still permeated with a kind of sweetness rare in Mass settings. The mid-point of the mass, and perhaps the greatest section of the whole piece, is the hypnotic Credo. Schubert creates a dichotomy between the beating heart of the lower strings and the ethereal phrases of the voices that through the Crucifixus section. Certainly, Schubert was intentional with his omission of the phrase Et in unam sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam (and in one holy, catholic, and apostolic church), and perhaps a young Schubert was exploring his own relationship with the church. Following

the impressive Credo, the Sanctus contains a brief but impressive fugal Hosanna. Schubert reserves the Benedictus for the soprano, tenor, and bass soloists, who sing lyrical, flowing melodies. The chorus returns with a repeat of the Hosanna fugue. Schubert sets his passionate Agnus Dei for soprano and bass soloists, interspersed with soft commentary by the chorus on the texts, miserere nobis and dona nobis pacem. The Mass ends as quietly as it began.

Lobet den Herrn, Alle Heiden BWV 230 was written by Johannes Sebastien Bach (1685-1750) on the text of Psalm 117:1-2. Although dates and sources for the motet are somewhat mysterious, its music clearly displays Bach’s style and skill. It is Bach’s only motet set for four voice parts and an independent continuo line. Typically, each line of text is treated in a unique and colorful way. Today, Cantabile will be singing the final movement of the motet: the exuberant, dancing Alleluia.

He also spent a month in Canada as a student at the Vancouver International Song Institute, an intensive summer program for singers and pianists focusing on art song, particularly French repertoire and the songs of Schubert. While there, he discovered his love for the beaches of the Pacific Northwest and affirmed his fondness for sushi and fish and chips. Ewing enjoys singing contemporary American art song as well, working with both student composers and celebrated masters. He has sung in masterclasses and recitals for Roger Vignoles, William Bolcom, Lori Laitman, Jake Heggie, Bob Spillman, and Libby Larsen.
