• English colonists head West, over the Appalachian Mountains, after the French leave
• Native Americans in the Ohio Valley are treated poorly by the English arrivals

• Angry Native Americans find a leader – Pontiac
• Pontiac leads a fight against the English called Pontiac’s War in 1763
• Native Americans lost the war to the English
Proclamation of 1763
• British government set up the Proclamation of 1763 to stop colonists from settling in the West – caused too many problems with the Native Americans
• Proclamation of 1763 drew an imaginary line down the Appalachian Mountains – colonists could NOT cross it! COLONISTS ARE ANGRY!!

More Bad News for the Colonists• Britain sent 10,000
troops to the colonies to enforce the Proclamation of 1763
• Most of the soldiers stayed in the Eastern cities
• Colonists had to pay for these troops they didn’t want!

• King George III and Parliament raised taxes in the colonies to pay off war debt from the French and Indian War

• Colonists protested the taxes by throwing rocks at tax agents, tarring and feathering tax agents, and rioting.

• No Taxation Without Representation! Colonists can’t vote to elect members of Parliament to represent them – so they shouldn’t be taxed

• Colonists gathered outside on the night of March 5, 1770 in Boston. They shouted insults and threw snowballs and ice at the British soldiers (lobster backs).

• The soldiers were arrested and tried in court. John Adams defended the soldiers saying they deserved a fair trial.
• At the trial John Adams argued that the colonists had provoked the soldiers.
• The soldiers received branding on their thumbs.
