the alUMni service awardHelen J. Ackerman, MA English ’86

Helen J. Ackerman has served Mason in two different capacities over the years: as an employee and as a volunteer. A native of Australia, Ackerman joined Mason in 1977 as a freelance writer in the public relations office. From there, she became director of Media Relations, and then an assis-tant vice president. In 1992, she became the vice president of University Relations (now the Office of Communications and Marketing) until retiring in 2005. During that time, she played a leading role in increasing public awareness of the university throughout Virginia and the nation. Prior to joining Mason, Ackerman served as an assistant public relations officer at the Western Australia Institute of Technology and as a journalist for Western Australia newspapers. As a volunteer, Ackerman has devoted many hours to organizations that seek to open educational opportunities for disadvantaged children. In particular, she has made a difference in Mason’s Early Identification Program (EIP), serving as a member of the EIP Scholarship Committee. She puts her talents to good use helping with EIP events, such as Career Day and Arts Day, and students as they write their college essays. She also serves on the board of directors of United for Social Justice, an organi-zation that enables more low income and at-risk students access to higher education. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Western Australia in Perth and a master’s degree in English from Mason.

the alUMna of the yearPatricia H. Roberts, BS Business Administration ’77

Patricia H. Roberts recently retired from her position as president and CEO of General Star Management Company, a General Reinsurance Corporation insurance underwriter. She joined General Reinsurance, a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, in 1977. Roberts worked her way up the organization through a variety of leadership positions of increasing responsibility within General Star’s New York branch. She was named president and CEO of General Star’s excess and surplus lines operations in 2001 and became president and CEO of Genesis, which underwrites excess and large deductible insurance coverage supporting the alternative risk transfer market, in 2004. Roberts and her husband, John, whom she met while they were students, attended Mason during its early years when classes were held in what is now Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax City. After graduation, Roberts was frustrated that she wasn’t receiv-ing the type of job offers that male students were getting. She voiced her concerns to Mason finance professor Bob Johnston, who helped her secure a job in the insurance industry. She has remained indebted to him for opening this door, which inspired her and her husband to pledge $500,000 to establish a named professorship in Johnston’s honor, the single largest gift from any business alumnus or alumna and the largest contribution received in School of Management history. A member of the School of Management Dean’s Council, she works within the insurance industry to create train-ing and executive education opportunities for the school. Roberts and her husband live in Connecticut and have two sons and a daughter.
