Cumbria’s population has the highest proportion of White British residents of any English county; our children’s experience of different cultures and lives can be limited. It is important that children develop an understanding of the interconnections, similarities and differences between themselves and others. This course explores how primary teachers can challenge attitudes and help children develop respect for diversity, understanding of interdependence and skills of openness and acceptance. It tackles the hard issues of negative perceptions and prejudice. A day of sharing ideas and experience of effective practice, and a FREE book to take away! As a result of attending this session participants will:

· Increased understanding of the key concepts, practices and perspectives associated with education for a just and sustainable world (global learning)

· Increased ability to incorporate global learning in the school curriculum

Dialogic Learning is a highly effective way of promoting critical, creative and emotional literacy in young people. It helps teachers develop children’s thinking skills, improves self esteem and self confidence empowering young children to take control of their own learning. “Evidence of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development can be found, for example, where pupils: are reflective about beliefs, values and more profound aspects of human experience, using their imagination and creativity, and developing curiosity in their learning” “...teachers use questioning and discussion to assess the effectiveness of their teaching and promote pupils’ learning...” Evaluation schedule, Ofsted school inspection handbook, September 2012 14 February, Barrow in Furness
