Digital Cinema- The Server

What do I need to know?

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Digital Cinema- Not just a projector!Digital Cinema- Not just a projector!

• Sorry- Barco!!!• Digital Cinema is a total, integrated system• This is to provide highest efficiency and security.• The server is at the heart of the whole system.• Plays content in right place at right time• Provides many more services for the cinema• Carries out many tasks for the cinema.

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

The main features of a serverThe main features of a server

• Must accept and store content for projection– All digital cinema is “store and forward” delivery– Apart from live events

• Has to accept content from many sources• Has to play out content to different projectors• Has to support many audio systems• Has to be data secure• Can be “custom built” or standard platform• Effectively, it “runs the show”.

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Server General ArchitectureServer General Architecture

• In a standalone version (one for each projector)– Storage of content in compressed digital data– Decoding and decompression of data, then…– Playout to projection and audio equipment– Usually inside one unit

• Additionally, in a networked version– Interfaces with additional in-cinema systems.– Controls output to multiple screens/ displays.– Allows improved diagnostic and audit checks

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Receiving data filesReceiving data files

• Satellite– Cost effective for large scale distribution (200+ sites?)– Some doubts about overall security remain

• Cable/ Broadband– Generally insufficient bandwidth for movies

• Physical media (Hard drive, DVD etc.)– Cost effective in short term- and will be used to start– Still relies on physical distribution- not for long term?

• Server must be able to accept from all sources.

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Storing Digital Cinema Data FilesStoring Digital Cinema Data Files

• Content is “packaged”– Compressed data (currently MPEG-2)– Encrypted (piracy protection)– Files for images, audio, subtitles, graphics etc.– Metadata includes playout instructions- when, where..

• Data received in advance- usually non real time

• Server must have enough storage for user needs– Assume around 80Gb per 90 minute movie.

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Interfacing with Cinema SystemsInterfacing with Cinema Systems

• Automation (Cinema Operations)– For quality coordinated presentations

• Scheduling systems (Box Office)– Reduce manual demands on cinema staff

• Audio systems• Security systems

“Interoperability”- MXF File Format“Interoperability”- MXF File Format

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

“Interoperability”- MXF File Format“Interoperability”- MXF File Format

• DCI System Specifications – Seven Hollywood studios- 176 pages!

• Will be basis of final standards for industry– Only applies to “studio” movies

• Key element is “Interoperability”– Common file formats, frame rates, synchronisation– Hardware and software compatibility- now & future

• MXF – Material eXchange Format (=data files)

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

So what does MXF do for me?So what does MXF do for me?

• Content for a variety of different sources will play on any compatible server.– So the server can interpret the content instructions– Such as: file size, compression, timings etc.

• So digital content will be like 35mm print-– I can be sure it will play on my equipment!

• Achieved by packaging the content correctly.– “Metadata” carries the instructions to understand

content.

MPEG (MXF) Interoperability Group

MPEG (MXF) Interoperability Group

• Group of server manufacturers agree to a common format

• Not all server manufactures have joined, or are active in the group.

• So this is a question in any buying decision.• It is not critical, but it makes life easier for user.

– Content owner (distributor) and cinema operator.

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Compression Systems: MPEG/ JPEGCompression Systems: MPEG/ JPEG

• MPEG-2 is commonly agreed compression format• DCI prefers JPEG 2000

– Still in development, but expected to complete 2006– Will probably require hardware upgrade (circuit board)

• Should not be a reason not to invest now– MPEG-2 will remain popular, upgrade cost reasonable

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Software and Hardware upgradesSoftware and Hardware upgrades

• DCI specify an open upgrade design– Easy upgrade, ability to show latest content on ‘old’

equipment.– Avoid the need to replace a complete system

• Reduces fear of digital obsolescence– But in some cases, improved performance possible– Users may choose to invest in upgraded equipment– May have an economic benefit.

• Consider a service plan for software at least.

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Dealing with Encrypted ContentDealing with Encrypted Content

• “Media Block” is where data is decrypted– Then sent to projector head as streamed data

• Usually located in the server• So server MUST be secure

– Electronically- usually Texas Instruments CineLinkTM

– Physical- locked securely, no output ports

• This will be mandatory for studio content

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Server User InterfaceServer User Interface

• “Keep it simple!!”• Operation should not be complex

– Should not require any sort of technology skills– Should display status, content available– Should allow operator to manage the show– Better still, let automation system do it.

• Create staff efficiencies, not make more difficult!

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

Building in Operational ReliabilityBuilding in Operational Reliability

• Design for maximum reliability– “Mirror” data disc drives– Back up power supplies

• Remote Diagnostics– Ability to perform regular “health check”– Most problems fixed over telephone connection

• Competent service support– This is now an Information Technology business!– Skills and service infrastructure to match the need

MEDIA Salles DigiTraining Plus 2005

It’s not just for feature films! It’s not just for feature films!

• Digital “pre-show”- advertising– May use same server and projector, but may not.– Security and operational cost are factors here– Advertising content is not usually encrypted– Pre show projectors cheaper to buy and operate

• Live events/ ‘alternative content’– Satellite feed needed for live events– Pre recorded content handled as feature films

• Opportunity to show content in lobby etc.
