Body & Soul: Living On Through Love Program

The Body and Soul: Living On Through Love pro-gram was created to increase organ donation in the African American community.

We will educate your congregation about healthy lifestyles and organ and tissue donation. Education methods and timing will vary across churches. This program will outline key messages about nutrition, physical activity, diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease.

The Body and Soul: Living On Through Love program will assist you and your fellow church members to live a healthier lifestyle and making informed decisions about organ donation.

Facts about organ donation and the need for additional donors in the African American community:

• There are more than 164 dialysis centers in the state of Michigan.

• Nearly 12,000 people in the state of Michigan receive dialysis.

• African Americans make up nearly half of those waiting for an organ transplant.

• African Americans have higher rates of high blood pressure and diabetes.

What does my church have to do?

After the program coordinator obtains support of the Senior Pastor to agree to the study and random-ization process, the selected church coordinator is responsible for...

• Recruitment of 5 peer leaders who will be trained in organ donation and healthy lifestyle education. These peer leaders will educate the congregation.

• A minimum of 60 church members who will be required to complete two surveys and attend at least one event hosted by the church.

• Discuss organ donation topics throughout the course of the year

• Provide opportunities for members to register on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.

Benefits to the Church

• For agreeing to participate in the program, the church will receive an unrestricted donation of $500.

• The church will receive $5 for up to 100 surveys completed at the onset of the program.

• The church will receive $5 for up to 100 surveys completed at the end of the program.

• Every participating church will be provided with free communications training for peer leaders

• Every participating church will receive health information on healthy lifestyles.
