ur courses are designed to captivate our students, to develop their English, whatever their level, and to awaken their curiosity in a profound and impactful way.

We believe that the passions of every student are reflected in what we offer, and we are tireless in our pursuit of an ever-improving service.

For the last 20 years we have been fine-tuning what makes an outstanding summer school. This involves hand-picking the best school sites in the South East of England, and ensuring that every student experiences stunning locations and outstanding facilities wherever they are based.

Every day they are with us, Bede’s Summer School students partake in a carefully considered combination of formal English lessons and exciting practical activities which develop their social skills and encourage them to step outside their comfort zone.

We employ the most passionate, highly qualified, acutely skilled staff, providing them with bespoke training, designed by us for our students.

All of our staff are residential and many of them return to us year after year. This ensures that the pastoral care received by each pupil at Bede’s Summer School is unrivalled.

A huge part of what we offer is the chance to have fun, and we ensure that, through balancing different nationalities and demographics, and through a programme designed to encourage social interaction and integration, all students feel like they are part of a happy family while they are with us.

Lastly, in terms of our pricing, what you see is what you get with Bede’s Summer School. There are no hidden costs.

When you choose one of our courses, everything from the prestigious University of Cambridge exams to the high staff-student ratios, from the outstanding activities programmes to the specialist care for children of all ages, everything we do is bespoke and included in one fixed cost.

Simply put, Bede’s Summer School creates the most immersive experiences and inspires our students to embrace each and every opportunity.

I grew up in Hamburg, Germany, and this is my second year at Bede’s Summer School.

I remember last year, looking for something international on the internet and finding Bede’s. I came to here instead of going to the US or Australia because I wanted to meet people from all over the world. It was extremely exciting, experiencing English-style lessons and really learning to communicate. And I’m really interested in English culture now. I didn’t expect that!

The campus here is so beautiful and I felt, when I left, really confident in my abilities. The staff are extremely helpful. If I had to pick one thing to recommend Bede’s, it would be the teachers. They are amazing! I also love the fact that the school is so near to Brighton and London. The shopping is incredible, and there is so much culture and history to see.

I’ve come back to improve my English further, in preparation for my 1-Year GCSE, but I want to travel in the future too, and there are magnificent opportunities here to experiment with particular skills, such as the vocabulary you need when travelling.

I really enjoyed my time here and learned a lot of new, interesting things. But when I first arrived I was really shy. I didn’t want to talk to anybody, but then I found that people here are really kind and friendly.

Bede’s Summer School has really developed me. Not just my English – it has helped me grow into myself.4

ADVENTURES IN ENGLISH

This carefully considered programme combines formal classroom learning with fun and innovative activities, projects, excursions and sports.

The Adventures in English Entertainment Programme is one of its key assets, designed to immerse students in the English language and culture in an innovative, inclusive, extraordinary way.

8

Page 9: Bedes Summer School 2013

Page 10: Bedes Summer School 2013

his element of the Adventures in English programme focuses on developing written and oral English Language skills, with particular emphasis on communication and building confidence in the speaker.

Our lessons are designed to cater to every level. This means that, no matter what a child’s level of ability is when they join us, their English skills will be tested and challenged, supported and stimulated.

No child is ever left to struggle in silence at Bede’s due to our small class sizes, truly expert teachers and well-considered mix of nationalities.

T After each student is assessed on arrival, we tailor lessons to their needs, ensuring that our thoughtful, flexible, innovative syllabus makes them feel like they are part of a learning group, that they are important, being listened to and understood.

At the end of the programme each student receives a report and course certificate, but we do not weigh the successes of our students in purely academic terms.

Our goal is for each individual to be confident in their abilities, to feel fluent and comfortable, and to be able to see that they are motivated to move on and continue to learn long after they have left us.

he formal side of Adventures in English is complemented and reinforced by our thoughtfully constructed, innovative and engaging Language Activities and Excursion Projects.

Our Language Activities consist of practical tasks, such as song writing, video diary, webpage design or cookery classes, and take place in small groups led by Bede’s teachers or specialist instructors.

All communication and instructions are given in English and, with a dramatic diversity of Language Activities offered every week, our experience is that this element of the programme not only reinforces learning but also tests students’ newly acquired knowledge.

Giving our students practical applications to experiment with language and learn as members of a group is absolutely invaluable.

Our Excursion Projects are similarly focused, but they also provide context for the weekly excursions we organise, introducing Bede’s Summer School students to new and exciting places.

Excursion Project teachers are different from the English Skills teachers. This encourages students to adjust to new accents, and each week provides a new theme and set of challenges.

Tasks such as model making and debating are enriched by complementary research tasks and presentations.

Plus, a fun competitive element means that every pupil is recognised for their contributions as an individual, as well as for their role within the group.

e believe that learning outside of the classroom is as important as learning inside. With this in mind, we offer a huge variety of outdoor activities, all organised and undertaken in English.

We organise a varied social programme which offers a wide range of sports, art, drama and clubs to accommodate all students’ strengths and preferences, finding ways to stimulate their curiosity and constantly creating opportunities for learning.

This process makes wider groups of students mix, building the confidence of each individual and encouraging participation in enthusiastic, light-hearted ways.

W Every Wednesday and Sunday we also take students out on adventures visiting places of cultural and historical interest and sight-seeing. Some examples are the London Eye, London Zoo, the Science Museum, Dickens World and a West End musical.

These excursions deepen the cultural experiences of our students, creating opportunities for interaction with the real world in fun, relaxed, genuinely enriching ways.

We foster a harmonious, international community at Bede’s Summer School, and an important part of this process is our Evening Entertainment programme.

We ensure that nationalities and cultural traditions are mixed in fun and thoughtful ways that encourage and nurture social skills, promote relaxation and engage students in meaningful enjoyment.

Although we are primarily a school, we firmly believe that social events, games and the occasional party provide invaluable opportunities for students to feel that they are living in a home away from home.

We want every young mind to recognise that Bede’s Summer School is a place where students are able to make meaningful friendships, live, study, and learn that fun is an essential part of learning.

Homerton is one of the most attractive colleges in Cambridge, with a mixture of old and new buildings set in spacious wooded grounds.

Up to 40 students per week join us for Discover Cambridge, coming from different countries around the world to engage in this exciting, innovative programme.

The bulk of the course is formed of 25 hours of lessons per week, taking place in the mornings and afternoons, with a full social programme planned in the evenings and weekends.

IELTSThis qualification is essential for students seeking to go to university in the UK or work in certain professions, such as law or medicine.

Experienced teachers assist students preparing for this test, coaching candidates for 3 hours per day in place of their English Skills and Language Workshops.

Students sit both the TOEIC and the IELTS tests at the end of their course at an external testing venue in Cambridge.

WORKING LIFE SKILLSThis unit enables students to develop skills and strategies in preparation for their future chosen profession.

Spending 10 hours per week in small class sizes of no more than 14, on subjects of particular relevance to them, students select a combination of topics in which they can develop their English with a focus on different market sectors such as banking and finance, business, computing and marketing.

Sessions encompass critical thinking and constructing arguments, conducting meetings, problem solving strategies, negotiating, public speaking, presentation skills, networking and technical writing.

LANGUAGE WORKSHOPSIn these sessions, groups of students, no more than 14 in a class, choose from a combination of workshop topics to develop their accuracy and confidence in specific areas of interest.

Workshops range from Colloquial English through to multi-word verbs, pronunciation, intonation and spelling.

In addition, students can choose to participate in TOEIC practice sessions.

If students choose to opt out of any organised social event or excursion they can instead spend free time as they wish, relaxing at the college, engaging in additional study or venturing deeper into Cambridge.

DISCOVER LONDONREGENT’S COLLEGEAges 17–21 Minimum Level B1 (intermediate)

Just like Discover Cambridge, Discover London is for students who want to develop their language skills in a more adult environment.

This fully inclusive programme includes optional evening events and weekend excursions, tailored to the age group, designed to create a feeling of independence.

Discover London is for those students who are considering further academic study in English and want to gain insight into British University life, experience lectures by University academics and professionals, and build their vocabulary in particular subjects as preparation for future academic courses.

44

Discover London is based at the reputable Regent’s College, which offers year-round undergraduate and post-graduate degree courses.

The central location of Regent’s College, in the heart of London’s Regent’s Park, means that we can offer our students a safe and secure setting in which to live and study while at the same time giving them the opportunity to spend time in England’s vibrant, exciting, culturally diverse capital.

Up to 40 students per week join us for Discover London, flying in from across the globe to take part in 25 hours of morning and afternoon lessons per week and to engage in our superlative social programme in the evenings and at weekends.

Student bedrooms have 1, 2 or 3 beds and are located in a large unisex boarding house on the campus. Males and females have separate bathroom facilities.

Bede’s staff live on site, the boarding house reception is manned 24 hours a day, and there is access to medical care.

Every student has a security pass to gain access to the boarding house and facilities, which include a lounge, IT centre (with free access to the internet), fitness centre, refectory, bar/brasserie, tennis courts, table tennis room and basketball courts.

Wi-Fi is available, but students will need to bring their own laptops to access the internet.

Washing machines and dryers are available as standard, and there is a £14 daily meal allowance for students to buy breakfast, lunch and dinner.

ENGLISH SKILLSThis element of Discover London is compulsory and involves 8 hours of lessons per week, focussed on improving general language skills, grammar and vocabulary.

Each student is tested on arrival and streamed into small classes of no more than 14, grouped by ability (four levels, from intermediate through to proficiency).

The varied, current and topical syllabus is delivered by experienced and qualified teachers who, using communicative methodology, stimulate student participation, fluency and confidence.

LANGUAGE WORKSHOPSIn these sessions, groups of students, no more than 14 in a class, choose from a combination of workshop topics to develop their accuracy and confidence in specific areas of interest for 5 hours per week.

Workshops usually combine two topics and run over 5 days, encompassing debating, essay writing, extending vocabulary, formal/informal language, interpreting graphs, phrasal verbs, presentations, pronunciation, punctuation and spelling.

ACADEMIC SEMINARSDiscover London students study three different subjects per week for a total of 12 hours, changing their subjects on a weekly basis, if desired.

A maximum of 14 students partake in each lecture, the topics of which are expanded on in seminars taught by experienced lecturers, pitched at first/second year of degree level.

Homework may be given as part of these sessions.

Academic seminar choices include computing, international business, law, marketing, management, theatre studies, media communications and much more.
