Welcome to the Autumn 2013 Concert Season atthe University of Sheffield! This autumn we continue our ‘A Boy Was Born’programme of events celebrating the centenary of thebirth of composer Benjamin Britten. Alongside asuperb series of concert performances from our civicpartners Department of Music students are working

with the city’s only professional opera company Steel Opera on aproduction of Britten’s brilliantly creepy chamber opera ‘Turn of theScrew’. Earlier on Utter:Jazz provide an innovative and fresh take onsome of Britten’s best loved vocal works, beautifully re-imagining Brittensongs within a kaleidoscope of jazz and world music and interspersed withreadings of WH Auden poetry by actor Roger Lloyd Pack. Towards the endof the season Ensemble 360 conclude our series of Britten stringquartets performing ‘String Quartet No.1’ alongside Debussy’s ‘StringQuartet in G minor’ an elaborate tapestry of colour and timbre and thesublime, folk influenced Herbert Howells 'Fantasy String Quartet'.

To launch the season we’re thrilled to welcome back to the series one oftoday’s finest early music groups. The Rose Consort of Viols perform amixture of sumptuous motets, exquisite consort songs and intricateinstrumental pieces by Tallis, Byrd, Parsons and their contemporarieswith countertenor Rory McCleery in ‘An Emerald in a Work of Gold.’It is a tremendous privilege to be able to feature some of the biggest namesin folk music in 'The Full English’. Fay Hield, Seth Lakeman, MartinSimpson, Nancy Kerr, Sam Sweeney, Rob Harbron and BenNicholls perform songs and tunes showcasing discoveries from theworld’s biggest digital archive of English traditional folk music, a newresource based on research by Dr Fay Hield of the Department of Music.

Internationally acclaimed percussionist Joby Burgess brings us a lavishaudio feast in ‘Powerplant’. Including music by Steve Reich and GabrielProkofiev ‘Powerplant’ is an inspiring collaboration with sound designerMatthew Fairclough and visual artist Kathy Hinde where the worlds ofminimalism and electronica collide.

Singing features prominently in our Autumn Season. Our Chamber Choirpresent ‘Picture and Portraits’ featuring music by Brahms andDebussy with Finnish chamber choir Kaamos. We’re delighted also topresent the soloists from English Touring Opera and period instrumentorchestra the Old Street Band who team up with Sheffield CathedralChoir for an evening of Handel’s Italian Vespers including theextravagant, virtuosic, extrovert and daring choral masterpiece, ‘DixitDominus’. Finally towards the end of the season following the success oflast season’s ‘Goldilocks’ Department of Music students present anotherclassic Broadway musical in concert – Jule Styne’s ‘Gentlemen PreferBlondes’.I look forward to welcoming you to our concerts this autumn!Stewart Campbell

‘An Emerald in a Work of Gold’ Songs and fantasias from the part-books of Robert Dow

Born in 1553, Robert Dow was bursar of laws at All Souls, Oxford in the1580s when he began copying a brilliant anthology of music into a set offive part-books. Beautifully calligraphed, the part-books rank among themost beautiful of all Tudor music manuscripts and are also an importantand authoritative source for the works they contain. The books provide uswith a magnificent snapshot of at least one Elizabethan’s musical tasteswith a mixture of sumptuous motets, exquisite consort songs and intricateinstrumental pieces by Tallis, Byrd, Parsons and their contemporaries.

The consort has received awards for its research andperformance of new programmes, performs throughout Europe, appearsregularly on the BBc, and has made many highly acclaimed recordings.

Rory McCleery is currently pursuing doctoral research in the FrenchRenaissance composer Jean Mouton and sings as a lay clerk in the choir ofNew college, Oxford. Rory greatly enjoys working as a soloist and consortsinger with specialist early music ensembles including The Monteverdichoir, The Gabrieli consort, The Tallis Scholars and The cardinall’s Musick, under conductors including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Paul Mccreesh, andAndrew carwood. He is also the musical director of early music vocalgroup The Marian consort.

The composer Benjamin Britten and poet WH Auden met in 1935 and quickly developed aclose friendship and collaborative workingrelationship. Through the General Post Office Filmunit they created short films with Brittenproviding music for Auden’s texts. Britten went onto set a number of Auden’s poems to musicincluding ‘Fish in the unruffled lakes’ ‘On ThisIsland’ and ‘cabaret Songs’.

Utter:Jazz weave their intimate chamberimprovisations through Britten’s rich melodies and harmonies, evolving each songthrough a kaleidoscope of jazz and world musicinfluences. These beautifully re-imaginedversions of songs from the above works arecomplemented by readings of WH Auden poetry by Roger Lloyd Pack.

Turn ofthe Screw

Steel Opera and Department of Music Students

Benjamin Britten was given the idea for an opera based onthe Henry James ghost story by Myfanwy Piper, wife ofthe artist John Piper. The Pipers had a close friendship withBritten, John Piper provided several set designs for Britten’soperas and Myfanwy would go on to write the librettos forthe operas ‘Owen Wingrave’ and ‘Death in venice’ in additionto ‘Turn of the Screw’.

Written in 1954 ‘Turn of the Screw’ is a tale of good versusevil, natural versus the supernatural, and possession andexorcism, when two orphaned children living in a countryhouse come under the evil influence of the ghosts of theformer valet and governess. The new governess attempts tocounteract the situation, with disastrous consequences.Brilliantly scored, the majority of musical material is derivedfrom the twelve-note ‘Screw’ theme heard near the work’sopening, giving a feeling of intensity and claustrophobia.

Steel Opera

Steel Opera is Sheffield’s only professional chamber operacompany and comprised of young musicians who arededicated to bringing more opera to the region and into the21st century.

As a hugely successful opera composer, Handel wascommissioned by the grandest patrons of the day to bringhis theatrical brilliance and flair to important ceremonialoccasions – his four coronation anthems, used at thecoronation of every monarch since 1727, are the mostcelebrated example.

English Touring Opera’s soloists and period instrumentorchestra the Old Street Band team up with SheffieldCathedral Choir for an evening of Handel’s Italian vespers.Written during his visit to Italy, when the supremely talentedyoung composer caused a sensation among musicians, poetsand cardinals alike with his dazzling virtuosity, much of themusic was written for the festival of the Madonna delcarmine at the carmelite church in Rome.

The concert includes ‘Donna che in ciel’, written to celebratethe deliverance of Rome from the earthquake of 1703, ‘Ilpianto di Maria’, an exquisite meditation on the virgin Maryat the foot of the cross, and the extravagant, virtuosic, extrovert and daring choral masterpiece, ‘Dixit Dominus’.

English Touring Opera is the leading touring operacompany in the uK. Their aim is to offer opera toeveryone, with a varied repertoire of high-qualityprofessional productions featuring some of the finest talentin opera.

Britten: Quartet No. 1, Op. 25 Howells: Fantasy Quartet Op. 25Britten: Three Divertimento Debussy: Quartet

The Debussy ‘String Quartet in G Minor’ is a landmark work ofthe quartet literature - an intricate tapestry of colour andtimbre, obsessive figures, Javanese gamelan-inspired pizzicatopassages and modal harmonies.

Britten’s light and bright ‘Three Divertimenti’ subtitled ‘Goplay, boy, play’ were inspired by the 1931 film ‘Emil and theDetectives.’ The ‘Quartet No. 1’ of 1941 is the most classical ofBritten's three officially numbered quartets and contrastsvigorous dance-like rhythms with moments of fresh lyricism.

Although mostly remembered for his extraordinarycontribution to church music Herbert Howells composed anumber of instrumental works early on in his career. Theinfluence of folk music is dominant in the sumptuous 'FantasyQuartet', immediately recognisable by the violin motif heard inthe opening bars.

Pianist Mary Dullea (Director of Performance at the Department of Music)has collaborated with Northern Irish composer, Simon Mawhinney, on anumber of projects, several of which were previously released by AltarusRecords. Their most recent project has resulted in a lengthy one-movementwork, ‘Marlacoo’. This complex composition is a study of musical memory.Rather austere and trancelike in nature, the work explores a combination of‘time concepts’ in music, attempting to find a synthesis between directionaltime (that is, goal-oriented logic) and circular time, where the ecstaticmoment is sustained almost indefinitely.

Mary Dullea’s recording of ‘Marlacoo’ is released by Altarus Records inOctober 2013.

Simon Mawhinney was born in co. Down in 1976 and was educated at theuniversities of Oxford, york and Queen’s, Belfast. He was appointed lecturer inMusic at Queen’s in 2006. Recent compositions have been written forEnsemble Recherche (Germany), Ensemble caput (Iceland) and Garth Knoxwith Quatuor Béla (France.) He is currently writing a cycle of string quartets.

This concert will be preceded by a research seminar in theDepartment of Music Jessop building about 'Marlacoo.' The seminarstarts at 16:00.
