DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS

When Ephraim Cabot brings his young bride Abbie home to their remote New England farm, he little foresees the turmoil that her arrival will bring his family. Ephraim’s youngest son at fi rst loathes the newcomer, but when hatred gives way to lust the resulting confl ict threatens to rock the peaceful farm to its core.

Eugene O’Neill reportedly imagined Desire Under the Elms in its entirety one night as he slept, and the play has the passion and intensity of a fever dream. First produced in 1924, this twentieth-century American classic has the power and scope of ancient Greek drama, infused with O’Neill’s ravishing vision of rural life.

This is a passionate love story and a searing literary masterpiece.

VENUS AS A BOY

ADAPTED BY TAM DEAN BURNFROM THE NOVEL BY LUKE SUTHERLAND

“True love was never going to be my reward… My reward is the understanding that, for those I’ve touched, knowledge of me is knowledge of the divine.”

In a room in Soho, a dying man is turning gold.

He has a gift. With just one touch or kiss, he can reveal a glimpse of heaven in all its resplendent glory. Some call him Cupid. Or Venus as a Boy.

Journeying from his turbulent childhood in Orkney, haunted by the girl he betrayed and lover he never escaped, south through the Highlands and Glasgow, he fi nds himself in the seedy underbelly of Soho, where pimps and hormones and a transsexual called Wendy fi nally break him.

Adapted from Luke Sutherland’s acclaimed novel, and performed by award-winning actor Tam Dean Burn (Filth and The Cutting Room), Venus as a Boy is an explosive and haunting story about the miraculous power of sex.

When she was a girl, her father taught her to recognise by touch every fl ower, shrub and tree in their walled garden so that she was at ease with her world. When Molly marries the unemployed Frank, they embark on a relentless campaign to restore her sight and their determination results in them paying a wonderful and terrible price.

The National Theatre of Scotland, in association with the Citizens’ Theatre, brings the revival of this acclaimed masterpiece back to its original home as part of a national tour, having fi rst been presented at the Citizens’ in December 2005. Created by Brian Friel, one of Ireland’s foremost playwrights, this most thought-provoking of modern dramas packs an enormous emotional punch. Simply staged, Molly Sweeney engages audiences in an intimate relationship with the play’s unfolding events. Cara Kelly reprises her acclaimed performance in the title role.

“An utterly memorable and frighteningly profound production... Cara Kelly’s heart-stopping central performance sets this production alight and keeps it burning with a steady blaze of theatrical energy.” The Scotsman *****

‘SET IN STONE’ FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

Few people have entered the theatre’s foyer and not noticed the four stone muses, the two literary fi gures depicting the Bard and Burns and the four elephant heads guarding the doors to the main auditorium – not to mention the bright pink nautch girls and columns in the Dress Circle Bar.

The theatre is offering its audiences and supporters a one-off opportunity to ‘sponsor’ one of these stone items that hail from the Victorian era. All money raised from this appeal will help us raise the funds needed to pay for the costumes, sets and props for the family Christmas show, Peter Pan.

To Name a Nautch Girl, Adopt an Elephant, Mark a Muse, Support a Column or Acquire a Royal Title we are seeking donations from £200 for a column to £2,000 for a muse. Open to everyone!

The Citizens’ Theatre Ltd is a registered Scottish Charity SCO 01337.

THANK YOUWith thanks to the Citizens’ Theatre Society for their kind donation towards the production costs of The Doctor And The Devils and Desire Under The Elms.

Thanks to Iain G Farrell for photographs of the theatre and to Tim Morozzo and Richard Campbell for rehearsal and production shots.

To fi nd out more about supporting the theatre please contact the Development Department on 0141 429 5561.

“It seems to inspire this loyalty, not only among the people

who patronise it and come here, but the population of

Glasgow. It seems to have this feeling that it belongs to us.”
