Unless specified, all donations received at public lectures and concerts during 2015 will be given to UBSOS (University of Buckingham Supporting Overseas Schooling), which raises money to help educate children in deprived countries. UBSOS organises fundraising events such as pamper days, book and tabletop sales, and car washes.

Many of the countries that UBSOS helps are home to Buckingham’s alumni and students, whose local knowledge and expertise can make best use of the money collected for these long-term projects.

With the continuous support of friends, students and staff, UBSOS has been able to provide help in Sri Lanka and Kenya, as well as contributing to many other local projects in Mexico, Argentina (as pictured above), Burma and Jamaica.

The remains of English abbeys, deliberately ruined at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, are still prominent features of the English landscape. Some have hardly been touched since the sixteenth century. This talk, The Friends’ Annual Lecture, considers why some of these may have survived in this state of suspended animation, particularly focusing on the influence of the antiquary Sir Henry Spelman (1562-1641) and his controversial book The History and Fate of Sacrilege. In this book, Spelman set out evidence that those who meddled with former monastic sites were likely to come to a sticky end.

Having studied art history at the University of Manchester, Dr Nicola Smith worked for English Heritage as a Historic Buildings Inspector before moving to the University, where she taught art history and heritage management from 1993-2003. She then became a founding director of Art Pursuits Ltd, organising cultural tours, study days and short courses. She has published books and articles on English architecture and sculpture, and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

Australia’s longest-serving judge Justice Michael Kirby will be lecturing on the role of law in grave human rights abuses, and the new international system of accountability.Kirby recently chaired the United Nation’s Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Afterwards he

wrote a letter to Kim Jong-un about the widespread and systematic violation of human rights in North Korea. He said the UN enquiry “was to secure the testimony of people who had never been listened to before” and the results were “devastating, upsetting, unrelenting”.

Kirby has many accolades, including a number of honorary qualifications; the University of Buckingham also awarded him with an honorary doctorate in 2000. He has been championed for his progressive views and has also been described by his biographer A.J. Brown as Australia’s “first, and only, true celebrity judge”. Kirby’s special concerns included human rights, the impact of science and technology on society, and issues raised by HIV, such as sexuality and the law.

There will be a question and answer session to conclude the lecture. Free drinks and nibbles will be served.

The Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack, as well as selected pieces by Bach, Vivaldi and Debussy, will be performed by The Royal Latin School’s String Orchestra at their upcoming ‘Autumn Colours’ concert.

The Royal Latin School has a very active music department with a reputation for excellence. Many Royal Latin School pupils go on to study at prestigious music colleges and universities.

All of the students study music in Key Stage 3, and additionally study a combined arts programme. Many of the teaching staff in the department have active professional performing careers.

This term over 100 pupils are also preparing for their upcoming production of Grease. The students take part in lunchtime and evening concerts during term time, as well as a carol concert.

The proceeds from the concert will go towards a major fundraising project called the ‘600 Campaign’, which will be invested into the school site. This rejuvenation project is to commemorate the school’s 600th anniversary in 2023.
