Revised ASHRAE Standard Helps to Compare Building EnergyPerformanceWhen it comes to the howto of measuring a building’s energy use, there ismuch to take into consideration. Are the measurements of a building’s area—used in the equation to derive energy use per square foot—to be takenfrom the exterior dimensions or to the centerline of the wall? Since they arenormally unoccupied, are storage spaces to beincluded or not? The newly revised ANSI/ASHRAEStandard 1052014, Standard Methods ofDetermining, Expressing, and Comparing BuildingEnergy Performance and Greenhouse GasEmissions, supports commonality in reporting theenergy performance of existing or proposed buildings to provide a consistentmethod of measuring, expressing, and comparing the energy performance ofbuildings. The new edition of Standard 105 now includes procedures forgoing beyond site energy to calculate the impact of building energy use onprimary (source) energy and greenhouse gasses. Learn more.

Penn State Elevators Go Up Environmental Risks Go Down Pennsylvania State University built a winning team for sustainability. Itcombined the strengths of the university's facilities staff, environmentalmanagement, and research with U.S. soybean farmers and the U.S.Department of Agriculture. Together, they helped to develop a biobasedproduct that is a sustainability solution for buildings across the country. Forevery floor a hydraulic elevator services, it typically has a shaft running anequal distance down into the ground. These hydraulic fluid“powered”elevators have a range of 26 stories so their cylinders may penetrate sixstories underground. Not often, but occasionally, these cylinders spring aleak. Hydraulic fluid can then contaminate soil and ground water. The deeperthe contamination, the more difficult and expensive it is to clean up the spill.Soybased hydraulic fluid prevents this environmental impact and reducesthe university’s remediation costs if there should ever be a leak or spill inone of its more than 100 hydraulic elevators.
